4。5 stars rounded upThis book checked a LOT of my interests and there were so many things I loved about it:-Gothic setting-Ominous mystery-Greek mythology！！-Bi/Pan MC without making it a huge deal/part of the main plot or having to discuss it-F/M friendship that doesn't lead to a love subplot/love triangle-Basically a black Poison Ivy-The writing style-2 moms！！-The TWISTS at the end！！Things I wasn't overly fond of/why this didn't get a full 5 stars from me:-While it kept my interest， the beginni 4。5 stars rounded upThis book checked a LOT of my interests and there were so many things I loved about it:-Gothic setting-Ominous mystery-Greek mythology！！-Bi/Pan MC without making it a huge deal/part of the main plot or having to discuss it-F/M friendship that doesn't lead to a love subplot/love triangle-Basically a black Poison Ivy-The writing style-2 moms！！-The TWISTS at the end！！Things I wasn't overly fond of/why this didn't get a full 5 stars from me:-While it kept my interest， the beginning did start slowly。 I didn't realize it was part of a duology/series at the time， so the world/character building， while enjoyable， felt a little excessive。 After the fact， though， it makes sense and feels a little more necessary。-The main thing about Briseis is her abilities。 I get it。 But she really could have used a bit more of a character fleshing。 Her personality was definitely demonstrated， but all we really know about her interests is that she likes plants。 -While some of it was necessary， there was a bit of repetition。 Some things were explained 2-3 times by dialogue that could have been along the lines of "I explained Y Situation to X Person。"-Briseis seemed。。。slow on the uptake。 Not that she didn't seem intelligent; it just felt as though sometimes things that were glaringly obvious/connected took her a little longer than it should have for her to make the connections。 Other times she caught on immediately。 Overall， this is one of my favorite books of the year （so far）。 Now I have to wait two whole days for Amazon to deliver the new one （I'm far too impatient to wait for the library to add it） and I hope I can make it with that cliffhanger！ 。。。more

Yes yes yes…Flowers， mystery and Black Girl Magic I enjoyed this one and yup it got one of those rare five stars –this one was a pleasure to read and I even stopped reading when I felt that it wasn’t getting the attention it deserved 。。In this one you meet Briseis， a beautiful twist out wearing glasses nerd girl I instantly fell for –she is fierce， funny and has two dope moms who wouldn't love to get know though she has no friends on account of a great secret she has that makes her able to flour Yes yes yes…Flowers， mystery and Black Girl Magic I enjoyed this one and yup it got one of those rare five stars –this one was a pleasure to read and I even stopped reading when I felt that it wasn’t getting the attention it deserved 。。In this one you meet Briseis， a beautiful twist out wearing glasses nerd girl I instantly fell for –she is fierce， funny and has two dope moms who wouldn't love to get know though she has no friends on account of a great secret she has that makes her able to flourish plants and no one understands how or why though in her parent’s flower shop in Brooklyn she is great asset to have—“They’d put me near a dead plant， and it would turn green and grow new sprouts if I paid attention to it。 When I was older， they gave me seeds that I would plant and bring to bloom in minutes。 They didn’t know how or why I could do the things I did， but they accepted it， nurtured it， and let it grow， just like the plants—until I was about twelve。”It is something she lives in constant fear of as she doesn’t understand it herself and shows up whenever she is around any living green thing。。“The fear that I carried around with me that someone would discover what I could do—or worse， that I’d lose control and get someone hurt—was heavy。”I tried to pretend that what I could do hadn’t pushed its way into every corner of my life like an invasive weed。 I wanted to get ahold of whatever this thing was， help my parents in the shop， and maybe have friends who understood me better。 It didn’t feel like too much to ask。Everything moves fast when her family receives a mysterious invitation to take over a house willed to her by her birth mother Selene’s sister Circe。。 The house is far away from Brookly， way out in the country with nothing but wide open space and a huge old house complete with an apothecary and a garden that grows mysterious plants， toxic plants that should kill a regular person but Briseis finds she is immune to…“I left the garden in a daze。 Circe and Selene were growing the deadliest plants on earth in this garden。 From what I could tell， they were harvesting their parts to store in the apothecary along with plants that had more common uses。 I had more questions than answers—and nobody to tell me the whole truth。”With Briseis’s talent they toy with the idea of reinstating the apothecary and dispensing plants and natural medicine and that’s when the strange characters start to show up…。“The place has been closed for a while， but now that word has gotten around that we’re here， I think people are hoping we’ll reopen it。” “Will we？” Mom asked。 She turned to me。 “You want to do this？” It wasn’t that I wanted to do it。 I felt like I was supposed to。 The only thing I’d ever been really good at in my life was the one thing these random people needed me to do。 It wasn’t a coincidence。 It couldn’t have been。”There are great characters in this story and Biiseis gets her first friends in Karter， a cute clumsy boy who works at a bookstore and Marie， a mysterious beauty with gray hair and seemingly indispensable income。。This little love triangle was interesting and you are not sure who she should pick as she makes it clear she is into both women and men romantically and both of them seem to show interest in her…but both have their inconsistent stories and a mystery with them…“She’s taken a liking to you，” said Nyx。 “I think she’s been without a true friend since Astraea died， and that was a very long time ago。” “Couldn’t have been that long。 She’s only seventeen。” Nyx burst into a deep， throaty laugh。 She took a second to compose herself。 “Forgive me。 Technically， that’s true。”As she tries to uncover the mystery of the house， her new friends and the apothecary there is also a secret she tries not to share with anyone as she doesn’t know all the details herself and it involves the Greek tragedy of Medea; her mother the goddess Hectate; her brother Absytrus and treacherous husband Jason。。woven within this mystery is a mysterious highly poisonous plant that makes her a highly sought after woman as she is the only one in the world who has the power to interact with it or even knows where it is though she has no idea yet what it does…“I didn’t know what an Absyrtus Heart was or why it was in its own secret room， protected by enough plants to kill everyone in Rhinebeck a few times over。 Marie said it was dangerous。 She’d asked me not to open the door。 I should’ve listened。”Learning more about Medea was rewarding as I love a good tragedy and her story of a woman scorned and tricked into killing her own children was intriguing。。she was great to learn about。“ ‘Medea was gifted with the power of immunity to any and all poisons。’ ” I dropped my phone。 Marie was at my side， handing it back to me before I could blink。 “Are you all right？” Alec asked。 I nodded， but no， I wasn’t all right。 He continued， looking between the computer screen and the document。 “ ‘Medea became the most powerful sorceress in the land。 Her brother， Absyrtus， was her ever-present protector。’So there is so much you learn in this book from the names of some poisonous and beautiful flowers， Greek myths and the medicinal wonders of botany。。there are also the great characters and story that draws you in–then my favorite， the twists， the betrayals and the mystery that I had no idea where it was going to land but it ends with a great cliffhanger and yea I am all in for a sequel。。this was a great read I enjoyed alot。。Yea 。。。more

I enjoyed this。 I took my time reading because I wanted to ensure that I had access to book 2。 Although this is a fictional story， there were some many things that resonated with me about myself and my own family history。 I’m excited to dive into book #2 tonight！
