Summary

Perfect for fans of Hatchet and the I Survived series, this harrowing middle grade debut novel-in-verse from a Pushcart Prize–nominated poet tells the story of a young girl who wakes up one day to find herself utterly alone in her small Colorado town。

When twelve-year-old Maddie hatches a scheme for a secret sleepover with her two best friends, she ends up waking up to a nightmare。 She’s alone—left behind in a town that has been mysteriously evacuated and abandoned。

With no one to rely on, no power, and no working phone lines or internet access, Maddie slowly learns to survive on her own。 Her only companions are a Rottweiler named George and all the books she can read。 After a rough start, Maddie learns to trust her own ingenuity and invents clever ways to survive in a place that has been deserted and forgotten。

As months pass, she escapes natural disasters, looters, and wild animals。 But Maddie’s most formidable enemy is the crushing loneliness she faces every day。 Can Maddie’s stubborn will to survive carry her through the most frightening experience of her life?

This book is written in verse, and I couldn't put it down! While it left me with a few questions that I didn't feel were answered, at the same time the open ended nature of the book allowed my imagination to wonder about those unanswered queries。 This book is written in verse, and I couldn't put it down! First I wanted to warn anyone about to read this that it shortly describes harm to animals。 If that’s something that would upset you I don’t recommend this! I originally only read this because my sister wanted me to。 But I was really glad I did。 It was good。 The ending almost made me cry。 If you need a book for a weekend I highly recommend this one。

Such a cute book in verse about the bravery of a young girl and her determination to survive。 Great companion to Hatchet。

Lonestar 2022This story gripped me from the first page。 The novel in verse format was a great choice。 I really liked the main character。 My only gripe is that it just ended abruptly。 I wanted to know what happened after!

PROS: This book made me feel completely grateful for everything I take for granted。 It's entirely emotional and captures the mental fear of being alone。 There are some indescribably sad parts that made me kind of feel bad for the author, but overall it's wonderful。 I've read it over 4 times now and still can't get enough of the reality and magic of it。 Everyone who reads this will be aware of how blessed they really are。 The writing and wording is AMAZING!!! As a poetic book, everything is a little messy and magical, and I love it。 The clarity is still there, but mingled with a whimsicalness of a true writer。 This might be my favorite single book ever。 CONS: A few swear words, and the narrator is clearly prone to lying to her parents, (shown at the beginning of the book) but as this is fiction and the author's imagination, I won't take it too personally。 HOWEVER。 Because she lied, she was faced with the hardest times of her life, which I think is a lesson telling people that lying can destroy you without you realizing it。 (Pros)NOTE: Everyone has their own opinions, so don't judge the book on this review。 。。。more

This novel written in verse is a cross between Hatchet & The Walking Dead without the Zombies。 It's a PERFECT MS novel fir reluctant readers。 The MC, Maddie, is smart, gritty, resourceful, & tenacious as she endures a very long journey by herself。 LOVED IT! I have not been able to keep this one on the shelf at my library, which is what any librarian wants。 Finally this summer I had the opportunity to read it。 I can see why the kids are loving it。 It's a novel in verse, which makes for a faster read。 Also I think that while reading it is easy for the reader to ask themselves what they would do in this situation。 There is plenty of action and adventure even though she's all by herself。 I felt that the circumstances which placed her in this situation I have not been able to keep this one on the shelf at my library, which is what any librarian wants。 Finally this summer I had the opportunity to read it。 I can see why the kids are loving it。 It's a novel in verse, which makes for a faster read。 Also I think that while reading it is easy for the reader to ask themselves what they would do in this situation。 There is plenty of action and adventure even though she's all by herself。 I felt that the circumstances which placed her in this situation and got her out were a little contrived, but that's my cynical adult-ness talking。 Kids are eating this up。 。。。more

There were some great themes in this book as Maddie matures and spends more and more time alone。 I loved the solace she found in books and the dog。 I loved how the author champions the library and Maddie had to research how to do things in books。 I thought the setting and plot was interesting and compelling。 I loved the lessons she learns about how maybe being alone is harder than survival。 I even loved her sorrow and anger and questions directed to God, for those emotions are real and true in There were some great themes in this book as Maddie matures and spends more and more time alone。 I loved the solace she found in books and the dog。 I loved how the author champions the library and Maddie had to research how to do things in books。 I thought the setting and plot was interesting and compelling。 I loved the lessons she learns about how maybe being alone is harder than survival。 I even loved her sorrow and anger and questions directed to God, for those emotions are real and true in all of us even in lesser situations。 But I didn't like that after her anger and questions Maddie stays angry and distant。 To readers it seems like despite her anger toward God she has decided He either doesn't exist or He is against her, which is strange when at the very end she prays for deliverance to Him。 For right after that is when she is rescued and found by her parents and the search party。 There is no mention then of God。 No praise of God who answered her prayers。 So does Maddie dismiss God now that she has no "need" of Him。 There was no resolution there and the ambiguity to such an important question disturbs me。 I was also confused in the beginning about the emergency。 I understand that the author hid much from the reader because we only got to know what Maddie knew, and she knew very little。 However after it becomes crystal clear that Maddie was left behind and I found myself confused。 Did I miss something in the early pages that would explain this situation? Was this dystopian and I didn't know? Was this historical fiction or located in a different country and I wasn't aware? So I went back to the beginning looking for a clue that I missed but I missed nothing。 Even at the end Maddie describes the emergency as vague political turmoil and power struggle issues that were never a threat to begin with。 I adore ambiguous endings in novels, but that did not cut it for me and I felt like I was pulled on a journey and then was not respected enough as a reader to be told what happened。There were swear words in the book (um, this is a middle grade, right?)And lastly, I found the poetry to be bland and only poetry because of the line breaks。 Content: 3/5Writing: 2/5Overall: 3/5 。。。more

I really loved this book。 Like, it’s THE BEST BOOK。 I loved the way that Megan describes how Maddie feels throughout her journey in her abandoned town, alone with just George to help her。 The scenes from scavenging to tornados and floods are amazing! I can imagine Maddie and those disasters happening in my mind, thanks to the incredible words。 I don’t really know what else to say。 I’m just speechless。 All I can say is that this is the 100x better version of Hatchet, and this should be a movie。 I I really loved this book。 Like, it’s THE BEST BOOK。 I loved the way that Megan describes how Maddie feels throughout her journey in her abandoned town, alone with just George to help her。 The scenes from scavenging to tornados and floods are amazing! Great book recommendation for a middle schooler。 I read it alongside my son。 I enjoyed leaving little sticky notes with my thoughts as I read。 He thought it was silly, but he said he agreed with my thoughts。 Loved the poetic style the author used。

A great survival story of a girl who gets left behind when the western USA is evacuated (reasons still uncertain)。 She is forced to survive for almost 3 years by herself。

Although the basic premise of the book seems far-fetched and rather unbelievable to me, Maddie is 100% believable and a delight! This novel-in-verse is written beautifully and is very hard to put down。 I found myself worrying for her and rooting her on as she goes through her ordeals。 She definitely gets kudos for persistence and courage! You can practically see Maddie maturing - even her vocabulary becomes richer and more sophisticated as she reads voraciously to keep from being bored。 I highly Although the basic premise of the book seems far-fetched and rather unbelievable to me, Maddie is 100% believable and a delight! This was hard to get into a bit, and it wasn’t my favorite, but it hooked me and then I needed to figure out how it ended。 Such a weird cliff hanger of an ending, too。 Don’t know what the gist of the book was meant to be, or if it was meant to lean into the poetic and be a multiple-meaning, take-what-you-need thing。 I enjoyed this character’s arc。

I’m going to start this by saying I don’t like most middle grade nor do I like verse… but holy smokes I LOVED this。 This was fantastic! It read like a movie and I felt all the emotions with the main character。 It reads fast as well。 This needs to be your next read。
