idk maybe I just wasn't in the mood but it wasn't interesting to be until the last 200 pages。。。。I just didn't latch onto Jase and Kazi。 i was more drawn to Mason and synove。。。。or whatever her name was。。。 idk maybe I just wasn't in the mood but it wasn't interesting to be until the last 200 pages。。。。I just didn't latch onto Jase and Kazi。 i was more drawn to Mason and synove。。。。or whatever her name was。。。 。。。more

2。5 stars - first half was good, but just dragged on and was longer than it needed to be。 I had to force myself to finish it。 It put me in a reading slump tbh

The book's title is very accurate in describing the story: it is quite literally a dance of thieves。 Kazi and Jase are both huge liars with dark secrets, and with soft spots for each other。 (Unfortunately, the chemistry between them feels like situational love。) “Truth that came too late was as useful as a meal to a dead man。” Please stop lying to each other 😭 it's not good when we can't even guess what the actual truth is anymore。I really enjoyed Kazi's endless line of riddles and admired her The book's title is very accurate in describing the story: it is quite literally a dance of thieves。 Kazi and Jase are both huge liars with dark secrets, and with soft spots for each other。 (Unfortunately, the chemistry between them feels like situational love。) “Truth that came too late was as useful as a meal to a dead man。” Please stop lying to each other 😭 it's not good when we can't even guess what the actual truth is anymore。I really enjoyed Kazi's endless line of riddles and admired her knack for getting out of tight spots。 She was developed well, with an interesting past and her clever wit now。 Jase was pretty smooth in his dialogue。 I didn't find myself particularly interested in Ballenger family history, strangely, because usually I love a good backstory。。。 which goes to say, maybe this wasn't。Their world feels a little complicated — there are many new terms requiring explanation, which almost made me expect magic and other fantastical things。 Instead, there are complex politics and violent fights (which are fun, but I wasn't always entirely sure what they were fighting over。。。) There were points where the action was exciting, but it became a bore after a while。 With point of views shifting between Kazi and Jase, I expected to feel closer to the characters and understand more of the intentions, but it was still often confusing。So。。。 I don't think this is quality fantasy。 Dance of Thieves fulfills its title, but not my satisfaction。 。。。more

This was a very middle of the road "meh" 3-star read for me。 I didn't actively dislike it, but wasn't that interested in the story or invested in the characters。 I also made the mistake of making this my first Mary Pearson read, without prior knowledge of the world of the Remnant Chronicles。 So to me, the world building was lackluster and utterly confusing。The biggest complaint I have with the book is that nothing actually happens。 The plot is virtually non-existent。 Kazi and her crew are lookin This was a very middle of the road "meh" 3-star read for me。 I didn't actively dislike it, but wasn't that interested in the story or invested in the characters。 I also made the mistake of making this my first Mary Pearson read, without prior knowledge of the world of the Remnant Chronicles。 So to me, the world building was lackluster and utterly confusing。The biggest complaint I have with the book is that nothing actually happens。 The plot is virtually non-existent。 Kazi and her crew are looking for the big bad captain and they think he's in Hell's Mouth, which is run by Jase and his family。 Kazi seems to forget that's her goal for over half the book。 All Kazi's goings-on with Jase in Hell's Mouth I found much too slice-of-life and irrelevant to anything to really be drawn in。 She and Jase get together pretty quickly and she wins his family over and they kind of just dance around each other romantically without having to deal with much conflict。 There was zero tension, minimal clue-gathering。 They take a side trip to a settlement where they have some fun and games, but it felt like a romance- and character-building tangent that was unneeded because those romance- and character-building moments had already happened and nothing new was learned。 I was hoping the end would kick things into gear but even that did not bring any semblance of a sense of urgency to the plot。 It's literally a long slog to take their prisoners back to the Vendan queen, and everything fizzles out and the happy ending is just。。。handed to them。 I also wasn't a huge fan of the writing。 It was passable, but nothing sparkled for me。 Switching back and forth between Kazi's and Jase's POVs ended up, as it often does, with story points getting repeated。 This all would have been fine for me if either Kazi or Jase were more complex than they ended up being。 There was no plumbing the depths of their characters past what we learned about them early on。 Their inner monologues cycle through the same questions and doubts over and over。The one thing that did intrigue me was the second-hand story about Greyson Ballenger and the children who were holed up in the vault, writing their traumatized thoughts on the walls as they defended against a siege。 That sounds like an infinitely more fascinating story than Kazi and Jase's。 。。。more

Series Info/Source: This is the first book in the Dance of Thieves duology。 I got a copy of this to read on ebook through Kindle Unlimited。Thoughts: This was a DNF for me。 I stopped reading it at about 25% in。 This is the third time I have tried to read this book。 I keep forgetting it is a continuation of the Remnant Chronicles which I never finished because I didn't enjoy the second book in that series。 I was going to try to push through this anyway, but it is mostly just a flat out enemies to Series Info/Source: This is the first book in the Dance of Thieves duology。 I got a copy of this to read on ebook through Kindle Unlimited。Thoughts: This was a DNF for me。 I stopped reading it at about 25% in。 This is the third time I have tried to read this book。 I keep forgetting it is a continuation of the Remnant Chronicles which I never finished because I didn't enjoy the second book in that series。 I was going to try to push through this anyway, but it is mostly just a flat out enemies to lovers story with very little else going one。 I just can't stay interested in it and I am making sure to record this down this time so I don't pick it up again! The story follows Kazi, former street thief from the first series set in this world。 Kazi is now a soldier for the queen and has been sent to investigate attacks on new settlements in the kingdom。 Kazi is certain that the Ballenger empire is the one attacking, what she doesn’t know is that the patriarch of the Ballenger empire has died and his son, Jase, is their new leader。Through a series of improbable circumstances Kazi and Jase end up chained together (literally)。 What follows is them trying to get to safety while alternatively hating each other and trying not to fall in love with each other。 It is a very basic enemies to lovers storyline and I found it boring。 This is the first 25% of the book and I just had no interest in it so I stopped reading at that point。Pearson has been more miss than hit for me as an author。 I enjoyed her book “The Adoration of Jenna Fox” but didn’t enjoy the rest of that series。 I also enjoyed the first book in the Remnant Chronicles but really didn’t like the second book in that series。 I think I am done picking up books by her at this point; something about her writing style and pacing just doesn’t work for me。My Summary (3/5): Overall I didn’t enjoy this and stopped reading about 25% of the way in。 The story starts out like it’s going to be some epic fantasy story and then quickly devolves into a rather two dimensional enemies to lovers story。 I wasn’t a fan and don’t plan on reading more Pearson books in the future。 。。。more

This plot was juicier than the mystery fluid leaked by cold KFC。The writing was *questionable* for me for like。。。。 actually on second thought the entire book。 But the characters and story were finger-lickin' good enough to more than compensate for the passive voice shortcoming。 The names were dumb and aesthetic simultaneously。 This plot was juicier than the mystery fluid leaked by cold KFC。The writing was *questionable* for me for like。。。。 actually on second thought the entire book。 But the characters and story were finger-lickin' good enough to more than compensate for the passive voice shortcoming。 The names were dumb and aesthetic simultaneously。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Alright y’all, I really did not like this book。 I don’t think it’s bad enough for 1 star but maybe like a 1。75。 I literally just finished the Remnant Chronicles and immediately read this without even knowing it take place in the same universe。 I just saw it getting a lot of hype on book tok and people calling it enemies to lovers。 I love enemies to lovers, it’s my fave trope。 But maybe I should be more specific… I like SLOW BURN enemies to lovers。 This book is not slow burn at all。 It is in fact Alright y’all, I really did not like this book。 I don’t think it’s bad enough for 1 star but maybe like a 1。75。 I literally just finished the Remnant Chronicles and immediately read this without even knowing it take place in the same universe。 I just saw it getting a lot of hype on book tok and people calling it enemies to lovers。 I love enemies to lovers, it’s my fave trope。 But maybe I should be more specific… I like SLOW BURN enemies to lovers。 This book is not slow burn at all。 It is in fact insta love, which is made very clear when Jase makes his huge declaration of love to Kazi stating that he loved her from the moment he first laid eyes on her or whatever。 Ew。 I literally despise insta-love。 While that trope is not a reason to dislike a book, it’s definitely a downside for me。 Fortunately, a lot of insta love books make up for it by a good plot。 Like the Legends series。 Unfortunately, I thought the plot of this book did NOT fall into that category。 It’s literally SO BORING and SO。 DAMN。 LONG。 And for what??? Like literally why。 This book is mostly filler。 I was zoning out so much。 I do not get the hype。 AND I REALLY LIKE THIS WORLD。 While the Remnant Chronicles was also a lot of filler, they were pretty standard sized books and the characters were a lot more freaking interesting。 This book is literally just two bland people telling each other riddles and getting in quarrels and then making out and then walking around。 Like I literally even forgot why Kazi and her friends even went to Jases land (I can’t even remember the name)。 Until they would be like, oh yea guys, we gotta find “the general”。 And it’s SO STUPID! Like why?? Give me something bro! I do not think I will be reading the second one, like I really don’t even want to because the ending of this book is so fcking bleh。 Like I literally don’t care if ur mom is alive or not Kazi, I’m sorry。 Because she probably is, and I can guess that by her even thinking it。 Maybe I should take a break from YA fantasy because I cannot remember the last REALLY GOOD YA fantasy book I read。 Idk, maybe this is a hot take on this book because I really haven’t seen any bad reviews for this one。 Maybe I’m just not in the mood。 And maybe I will read the second one because I already checked it out of the library。 I just hope it’s not a slog like this one。 Thank u for listening to my almost unintelligible rant。 。。。more
