Summary

New York Times Bestseller

The new must-read epic from master storyteller Ken Follett: more than a thriller, it's an action-packed, globe-spanning drama set in the present day。

"A compelling story, and only too realistic。" --Lawrence H。 Summers, former U。S。 Treasury Secretary

"Every catastrophe begins with a little problem that doesn't get fixed。" So says Pauline Green, president of the United States, in Follett's nerve-racking drama of international tension。

A shrinking oasis in the Sahara Desert; a stolen US Army drone; an uninhabited Japanese island; and one country's secret stash of deadly chemical poisons: all these play roles in a relentlessly escalating crisis。

Struggling to prevent the outbreak of world war are a young woman intelligence officer; a spy working undercover with jihadists; a brilliant Chinese spymaster; and Pauline herself, beleaguered by a populist rival for the next president election。

Never is an extraordinary novel, full of heroines and villains, false prophets and elite warriors, jaded politicians and opportunistic revolutionaries。 It brims with cautionary wisdom for our times, and delivers a visceral, heart-pounding read that transports readers to the brink of the unimaginable。

This felt like a "movie of the week。" The characters were pretty wooden and the plot veered in so many different directions without ever really cohering in a satisfactory way。 The line demarcating heroes and bad guys was too clearly demarcated for me to have any interest or attachment to anyone。I love Ken Follet's writing usually。 He has an eye for detail and a way of embedding facts in his fictional narratives that don't detract from the story。 I was entertained at times but otherwise underwhel This felt like a "movie of the week。" The characters were pretty wooden and the plot veered in so many different directions without ever really cohering in a satisfactory way。 The line demarcating heroes and bad guys was too clearly demarcated for me to have any interest or attachment to anyone。I love Ken Follet's writing usually。 He has an eye for detail and a way of embedding facts in his fictional narratives that don't detract from the story。 I was entertained at times but otherwise underwhelmed。 *******SPOILER********The end was about the worst part of it。 The climax felt incredibly rushed and yet left so much on the table。 And I have a really hard time believing some of the motivations of the actors especially in China。 。。。more

Il faut être en forme pour lire ce bouquin ! C’est long … des huit clos , des jeux politiques où on se perd ! Très bien documenté mais il faut accrocher à cette vision ténébreuse du monde !

Not up to Follett’s usual level of craft in storytelling。

I’m confounded by all the positive reviews。 I’ve really enjoyed Ken Follet’s previous novels; he’s such a talented world builder。 Here the world is disjointed, with both the narrative hook and character development completely missing。 Beyond that, the language is stilted, almost as if it’s been translated from an original foreign language。 We come across “budget for defense” instead of defense budget, and “got in the driving seat” instead of driver’s seat。 There are multiple other examples throu I’m confounded by all the positive reviews。 I’ve really enjoyed Ken Follet’s previous novels; he’s such a talented world builder。 Here the world is disjointed, with both the narrative hook and character development completely missing。 Beyond that, the language is stilted, almost as if it’s been translated from an original foreign language。 We come across “budget for defense” instead of defense budget, and “got in the driving seat” instead of driver’s seat。 There are multiple other examples throughout。 Truly odd。 I could definitely be wrong, but as someone who notices the language people use, I have this nagging suspicion that someone other than Follet wrote this one。 。。。more

This is a book about several governments and how they interact with each other。 It is about intrigue and spies, human trafficking, drug dealing, romance and parenting。 It’s about politicians both good and evil, and often we find good and evil lurking within the same person。 There are events that can lead up to war — a war which, if cooler heads prevail, can be avoided。 But that’s not how human nature works sometimes。 Let me sum up in a dumbed down version, and without giving away too much of the This is a book about several governments and how they interact with each other。 It is about intrigue and spies, human trafficking, drug dealing, romance and parenting。 It’s about politicians both good and evil, and often we find good and evil lurking within the same person。 There are events that can lead up to war — a war which, if cooler heads prevail, can be avoided。 But that’s not how human nature works sometimes。 Let me sum up in a dumbed down version, and without giving away too much of the storyline……。If I pinch you, then you must retaliate by poking me。 Then I must retaliate by slapping you。 Then you must punch me。 Then I must hit you with a blunt object。 And on and on it goes。 This is the way nations behave in order to keep posturing and saving face。 The conflicts get bigger and more complicated until we find that the next steps would deliver China, North Korea, South Korea, USA, and Japan into World War 3。 The illogical behavior by seemingly logical people is dumbfounding, when the obvious outcome is nuclear war。 At the center of it all are some very well developed characters located all over the globe。 They each have their own storylines and participate in their piece of the puzzle leading up to the exciting climax。 Some of our characters never even meet, but all overlap in some way。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this book。 It left me a bit rattled! It seemed like a look into possibilities in the future regarding warfare……scary! I think Ken is an amazing story teller and I loved how he weaved all of the various scenarios together。 A long read at 800 pages but worth every bit!

A story about drug smuggling, war, and leaders of various world governments cause-and-affect relationships, actions, and reactions。 The American president is a woman, heads of the Chinese, South Korean and North Korean governments all converge at a point which the title of the book presages。 A lengthy (over 800 pages) story detailing the weapons and processes of intra-government relations that will either lead to an all-out world war and global destruction or a new level of world peace。 If you l A story about drug smuggling, war, and leaders of various world governments cause-and-affect relationships, actions, and reactions。 The American president is a woman, heads of the Chinese, South Korean and North Korean governments all converge at a point which the title of the book presages。 A lengthy (over 800 pages) story detailing the weapons and processes of intra-government relations that will either lead to an all-out world war and global destruction or a new level of world peace。 If you like lengthy and infinitesimally described weapons, military processes, behind-the-scenes 'movers and shakers' with a smattering of infidelity and romance thrown in, you probably will enjoy this book。 I know Follett is known for his detailed and thorough research and depiction of the nuances in his stories but I confess it overwhelms and ultimately bores me。I suspect, however, that the machinations of the various deputies and assistants is an accurate portrayal of what actually happens behind the curtain。 For that I congratulate Follett。 。。。more

I’d almost forgotten what a good writer Ken Follett is, he really draws you into the characters and their stories。 The pages, 816 of them flew by。 Set mainly in North Africa, Korea, America and China, the stories are separate but integrated and too plausible for comfort。 I really enjoyed it。

I cannot say I enjoyed this book, although it is a compelling and important story。 It was well written and engaging and as I read I had the realization that although this book was fiction, it was based on real life situations。

ENG。 "Never", a title that lets hope will "never" happen。 This is a book with more than 800 pages。 A thriller where different countries and cultures intervene, creating a global conflict。 A game of spies, leaders and villains with a common objective, to avoid a "Third World War"。 With fictional characters that feel real, and issues like war, climate change, the interests of the World leaders, "sexim" and the freedom of the human being。 It's not the typical Ken Follet book, however I recommend it ENG。 "Never", a title that lets hope will "never" happen。 This is a book with more than 800 pages。 A thriller where different countries and cultures intervene, creating a global conflict。 A game of spies, leaders and villains with a common objective, to avoid a "Third World War"。 With fictional characters that feel real, and issues like war, climate change, the interests of the World leaders, "sexim" and the freedom of the human being。 It's not the typical Ken Follet book, however I recommend it if you're looking for some action。 ESP。 "Nunca", un título que esperemos que "nunca" suceda。 Éste es un libro de más de 800 páginas que se te pasa volando。 Un thriller en donde intervienen diferentes países y culturas, creando un conflicto global。 Nos presenta un juego de espías, líderes y villanos con un mismo objetivo, evitar una "Tercer Guerra Mundial"。 Con personajes ficticios que se sienten reales, y otros temas que te ponen a reflexionar como la guerra, el cambio climático, los intereses de las potencias, el machismo y sin olvidar, la libertad del ser humano。 No es la típica novela de Ken Follet, sin embargo si lo recomiendo si estás buscando un poco de acción。 。。。more

Ken Follet will tell you a fairly good story, so there is that。This book though。。。how long are we going to gamble with the fate of the world? I am a Ken Follett fan though my fav book is Pillars of the Earth。 Never was only okay in my mind。 There seemed to be a lot of repetition from chapter to chapter like Ken expected you forgot something he had already told you。 The US President did not seem like a real person to me… I struggled to believe this was a Follett book; it just seemed somewhat amateurish。
