Summary

HEARTSTOPPER meets FOOTLOOSE in this cute young adult romance about first love, embracing what makes you different, and standing up for what you believe。

— — — — — — —

Jacob Walters′s dad has worked to make his son′s life a living hell。 But when the cute new transfer student suffers his father′s wrath, Jacob must make the hardest decisions of his life。

Skylar Gray is adopted, nonverbal, and he feels most comfortable wearing skirts。 Life has never been easy, but with a fresh start at a brand-new school, with new parents and in a new state, he just might finally make some friends。 Maybe。 Honestly it′s hard to focus on anything when gorgeous rocker boy Jacob is around。 But it′s hard for Skylar to trust anyone when people have always been quick to ditch him at the first inconvenience; they always seem more than ready to judge him as defective。 And the bullies love to confirm it。 Skylar has only ever had himself, so why would anything be different this time? Especially for an anxious boy with literally no voice。

Jacob doesn′t give a damn, especially not since he came out over the summer。 He expected the hate he got from his father, who mostly acts as if it never happened, but he refuses to let it hold him back。 It doesn′t matter, Jacob′s over it。 He's going to paint his nails, dye his hair, and strike a heavy riff on his guitar if he wants to, even if it means being grounded most of senior year。 But when the cute nonverbal transfer student, Skylar, wears a skirt to school, prompting a sexist new dress code proposal, Jacob decides it′s time to take a stand, no matter the risk to himself。

this book。。。 what can i say? it was a great read, discussing real and important topics。 but it never became too much。 even during the more difficult moments for the characters, there were still happy things to hold on to, there was love and friendship and growth。also the very last page made me cry so i'm glad for that and happy to have connected to the story and characters in such a way。 this book。。。 what can i say? it was a great read, discussing real and important topics。 but it never became too much。 even during the more difficult moments for the characters, there were still happy things to hold on to, there was love and friendship and growth。also the very last page made me cry so i'm glad for that and happy to have connected to the story and characters in such a way。 。。。more

I was burnout by all blatant homophobia, sexism and gender roles (I know it happens sometimes)。 I don't think the trope of the dress code was enough to move the story。 There's barely any character development, I didn't see their growth or how/why they felt in love because they are just described as hot or cute, and we don't get to see other traits。 Even though it's a short and chill read, it's like nothing happens。 Now onto the miscommunication trope。 Skylar, give Jacob a break it's his first re I was burnout by all blatant homophobia, sexism and gender roles (I know it happens sometimes)。 I don't think the trope of the dress code was enough to move the story。 There's barely any character development, I didn't see their growth or how/why they felt in love because they are just described as hot or cute, and we don't get to see other traits。 Even though it's a short and chill read, it's like nothing happens。 Now onto the miscommunication trope。 Skylar, give Jacob a break it's his first relationship too。 You've only now each other for a month, and you expect him to say I love you; even though, you are not sure yourself。 I don't think it's fair to compare this book to Heartstopper。 Most of the charcters felt plain。 For example, Imani's only personality traits were that she is Wiccan and does things sassily (the one that pushes the romance too)。 Overall, I liked the representation, we need more LGBT+ non-verbal characters。 Unimportant detail: It baffled me that Jacob is said to be an emo and his band does rock covers, but he doesn't know who my MCR is 🕳🚶🏻🤡。 。。。more

I have very much enjoyed reading through the Noahverse! Being able to revisit the characters and have them intertwine with these new ones is such a fun concept and I'm loving every bit of it! I am OBSESSED with the amount of representation in this book。 I haven't read anything like it。 A queer character, who is also mute, adopted, and who also prefers dress for the GAWDS in skirts and dresses。 Brilliant。 I love Skylar's character in that aspect。 And for Jacob, a rock music-loving, guitar playing I have very much enjoyed reading through the Noahverse! Favorite character。 She had what I felt Kallie from "Watching For Comets" lacked: that true, best friend, ride-or-die dynamic。 She was always looking out for Skylar, even when he was being dramatic。 She was always a light in this book, who also never backed down from the things she was or enjoyed, being a true role model for Skylar。 And she was hilarious。 I enjoyed the plot, as it was something different for me。 The plot did take a while to progress。 But once it got there I was engrossed。 There were times where I felt the romance took over the plot a bit too much, but overall I was satisfied with it! It speaks on a real struggle today。 There are those who are always trying to oppress, acting as if they are a higher being, and being completely tyrannical。 And it takes voices and speaking up to make the change and knock these idiots down。 My qualm with this book was the self-deprecation。 The characters have ZERO self-confidence。 They grew to like each other quickly, but beat around the bush for far too long。 I mean, Skylar literally didn't gain his confidence till the last few pages of the book。。。。Both Skylar and Jacob kept up the "why would anyone want to be with me" act throughout the entirety of the story。 I wish we had more time with the romance。 For someone to have just outright expressed their feelings。 We, then, could have gotten so much more out of them actually being together, and navigating all this representation as a successful, queer couple。 And when representation is consistently being criticized and judged by the Trump's of the world, we need more confident and strong characters representing these groups。 But also that naked hardcover。。。PERFECTION。 Can't wait to now dive into This I Promise You! 。。。more

Sweet, lovable Jacob。 I loved that he out and owning that even in difficult family situation。 And I loved that we saw vulnerabilities and a softer side to him too, as well as seeing authentic flaws and mistakes when he's first learning about Sky's disability and how he actively makes the decisions to do better and try to learn other ways of communicating!Imani and Seth as well as Ian and Eric very also super fun and authentic chaotic besties, which I loved。I loved all the pop culture references in there and the cute texting and inner monologues that made made me smile and laughed as much as "aww" to myself。 Jordan has a great way of writing realistic emotions and thought processes that you can engage with no matter who you are!Overall this book was amazing and I would highly recommend it! It's soft and romantic and I can definitely see myself rereading it! I smiled, I laughed, I awwww'd, and I shed a few tears - happy ones! A generally satisfying story with engaging characters that stumbles at the end due to typical miscommunication/grand gesture trope。Every Word You Never Said is a dual pov gay high school romance set in a small town with some very conservative politics。 Skylar is a recent transfer to the school and is nonverbal (he either has to sign or use his phone to talk) and he is gender non-conforming in that he sometimes likes to wear skirts/dresses/makeup。 Jacob is the son of the town’s conservative polit A generally satisfying story with engaging characters that stumbles at the end due to typical miscommunication/grand gesture trope。Every Word You Never Said is a dual pov gay high school romance set in a small town with some very conservative politics。 Skylar is a recent transfer to the school and is nonverbal (he either has to sign or use his phone to talk) and he is gender non-conforming in that he sometimes likes to wear skirts/dresses/makeup。 Jacob is the son of the town’s conservative politician who is desperate to get away。 For the most part, I think the book accomplished what was intended, a fairly fluffy romance with some darker moments exploring homophobia and insecurities。 However, some of the representation is not flawlessly executed and the pop-culture references are a little cringe。 I see a lot of reviews bashing this for not being serious enough exploration of issues, but I don’t think this was trying to do that。 It moved quickly enough for me and the dual plot of the romance and Skylar’s fight with the school/town over the dress code was compelling。 I did have some problems with the final sequence where there is a classic miscommunication trope, although I don’t think was unrealistic (teenagers are allowed to be stupid/have baggage), I just didn’t enjoy it。 Then the issue is solved through a grand romantic gesture that could have been fine, but was so over the top and saccharine it was kind of obnoxious。 I don't generally like fiction without some fantasy/sci-fi elements but I did enjoy this and I had no trouble finishing it。 Recommended to those who like gay high school romances, although there is a fair amount of bullying/homophobia, which I didn’t find unrealistic, but if that’s not your cup of tea, then this isn’t for you。 。。。more

The representation in this book is excellent。 Not only for picturing LGBTQ+ culture, but mostly for portraying a group where the few straight ones do not ditch their queer friends and act as staunch allies toward them。 Also, the disability and gender non-conformity in Skylar’s character are treated with care, weaving such aspects with ease within the story。 His relationship with his new parents and friends, and his character's journey to finding a real family and connection is beautiful。My favou The representation in this book is excellent。 Not only for picturing LGBTQ+ culture, but mostly for portraying a group where the few straight ones do not ditch their queer friends and act as staunch allies toward them。 Also, the disability and gender non-conformity in Skylar’s character are treated with care, weaving such aspects with ease within the story。 His relationship with his new parents and friends, and his character's journey to finding a real family and connection is beautiful。My favourite aspect of this story is the religious trauma within Jacob’s household。 Being from a religious background myself, I identified a lot with what he goes through and how such misconceptions can be internalised, making you feel ashamed and/or revolt against those around you。 It was a delight to see how Jacob stood his ground not only for his beliefs but supporting Skylar as well on the dress code plotline, and also the message that religion is not the problem itself, but narrow-minded people perpetuating bigotry。However, the main plot was somewhat underwhelming when compared to all these beautiful aspects shown above。 Skylar and Jacob’s romance flows quite slowly to the point it gets boring sometimes, and their crisis and internal monologue are shallow and immature。 It is YA, of course, so it’s according to the age category, but from a novel that approaches such important and poignant social topics, I’d expect a plot that wasn’t a shallow high-school first-love tale。Don’t get me wrong, it’s still worth the read。 But perhaps I entered this one with too-high expectations, and got out with a “OK, that was it” feeling, which lowered my rating。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I really enjoyed this book。 I probably would of enjoyed it more if I was younger。 Some moments felt slightly childish and cliché, but I also realize that Jacob and Skylar are in high school。 There wasn’t anything special about this book that really touched me on a personal level aside from the religious conflicts within the plot。 Some reviews I read disliked the conflict between religion and sexual orientation, but as someone who is openly gay and raised in a Christian household, these views and I really enjoyed this book。 I probably would of enjoyed it more if I was younger。 Some moments felt slightly childish and cliché, but I also realize that Jacob and Skylar are in high school。 There wasn’t anything special about this book that really touched me on a personal level aside from the religious conflicts within the plot。 Some reviews I read disliked the conflict between religion and sexual orientation, but as someone who is openly gay and raised in a Christian household, these views and arguments are always used against me。The ending, with Jacob’s dad being humiliated and the cute scene of Jacob expressing his love for Skylar, felt like a scene from a 2010’s Disney movie。 It was cute, sweet, and even predictable, but it didn’t made me scream。 Overall, if I had read this book in middle school or high school, I would probably give it 5 stars because of how cute it is。 I would definitely recommend this book, but don’t expect much from it aside from two high school boys having a Disney-like romance and ending。 。。。more

this would've worked better as fanfiction。 but for real tho, it felt kinda lackluster, like there needed to be a little bit more exploring outside the overarching conflict in the book。 some parts didnt sit right with me either。 this would've worked better as fanfiction。 but for real tho, it felt kinda lackluster, like there needed to be a little bit more exploring outside the overarching conflict in the book。 some parts didnt sit right with me either。 。。。more

The conflict near the end with Sky and Jacob was only there because of miscommunication, my least favorite trope。 Which is the only reason it’s getting four stars instead of five。

Skylar already isn’t sure about the start of the school year; it’s hard to be gay, nonverbal, and the only new kid in his grade。 He’s is more than ready for people to abandon him after years of coming up through the foster system, where his disability often makes him more of a burden than a boon- at least so he thinks。 It seems too good to be true when Skylar starts to make a couple friends and catches the eye of quiet, gorgeous Jacob。 Meanwhile, Jacob is read to get out of this town。 After comi Skylar already isn’t sure about the start of the school year; it’s hard to be gay, nonverbal, and the only new kid in his grade。 He’s is more than ready for people to abandon him after years of coming up through the foster system, where his disability often makes him more of a burden than a boon- at least so he thinks。 It seems too good to be true when Skylar starts to make a couple friends and catches the eye of quiet, gorgeous Jacob。 Meanwhile, Jacob is read to get out of this town。 After coming out as gay, he lost his best friend and had a major fight with his aggressively conservative dad, so he’s had enough with small-minded bigotry。 He’s here to paint his nails, play moody music with his band, and so what if he’s crushing on the new kid? Then Skylar wears a skirt to school, prompting a wild backlash in the form of a sexist new dress code proposal, which brings the two boys closer together when Jacob decides to stand up for his new friend。 Every Word You Never Said is a cute story about two gay teens in a rather conservative town, learning about love and trust while they fight against bigotry at their school。 I think the best part of this novel is the characters。 Skylar is sweet, if a little frustrating sometimes due to his seemingly random (narratively timed) mood swings, but he’s had a lot of life experiences that have made him more than ready to question people’s motivations for hanging out with him。 His nonverbal communication was a really interesting part of the story, a mix of assistive speech tech, sign language, and lip-reading help him communicate with his new family and friends。 Jacob is a sweetheart and way more awkward than he lets on, but otherwise pretty standard “gay teen from a religious family”, looking for a way out and trying to stand up to his dad in even the smallest possible ways。 Probably my favorite character, other than Skylar’s adoptive parents who are beyond chill and understanding, is Imani。 She’s Wiccan, wicked cool, snappy, and really helps Skylar feel loved and listened to while she masterminds bringing him and Jacob together throughout the book。 The story was alright, I think it suffered from having some too well-timed personal tension thrown in to the middle of an otherwise blossoming relationship, but I thought the main characters’ fight against the new dress code policy was interesting。 There were a few loose ends or slightly less incorporated elements, characters who never seem to make an appearance or who show up with a heavy backstory that isn’t well explained, and an ending that seems “happily ever” without actually solving several of the major pending problems in the book。 With those misses, and the artificial feeling conflict towards the second half, I think Every Word You Never Said is a fairly fine story but probably one I won’t read again。 。。。more
