This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Well, spoiler alert! I thought the book would be about the boy’s journey on the Lincoln Highway, but it wasn’t。 The Lincoln Highway was the motivation for their adventure , and I suppose that Emmett and Billy eventually did make the drive。 I did like the unexpected twist at the end, but I was disappointed that the plot did not bring closure to Sally and Emmett’s relationship

Fabulous characterization and rich storytelling of 4 boys’ journey

Ending ruined what had otherwise been an enjoyable read。

Emmett Watson, age 18, arrives home to his father's farm in Nebraska in 1954。 Emmet has just spent 18 months at a juvenile detention camp, Salina, for accidentally murdering another young man。 His mother deserted the family years ago, and his father died shortly before Emmett was released。 He arrives to find that the mortgage on the farm is being foreclosed。 But that's actually okay with Emmett。 The last thing he wants is to repeat his father's farming failures。 Emmett was apprenticing with a ca Emmett Watson, age 18, arrives home to his father's farm in Nebraska in 1954。 Emmet has just spent 18 months at a juvenile detention camp, Salina, for accidentally murdering another young man。 His mother deserted the family years ago, and his father died shortly before Emmett was released。 He arrives to find that the mortgage on the farm is being foreclosed。 But that's actually okay with Emmett。 The last thing he wants is to repeat his father's farming failures。 Emmett was apprenticing with a carpenter before he was sent to Salina。 His goal is to head to Texas and build a business basically flipping houses before that was even a thing。 But Emmett is now responsible for his eight-year-old brother Billy, who insists that they should go west instead of south, follow the Lincoln Highway to San Francisco and try to find their long-lost mother。 And then two of Emmett's buddies from Salina, Duchess and Woolly, show up and turn their plans exactly backwards。 This book starts strong。 Emmett and Billy are very sympathetic characters。 Emmett has a deep sense of honor, fierce ambition, and steadfast determination。 Billy is preternaturally intelligent and sensitive, and completely naive。 Duchess and Woolly drive off in Emmett's Studebaker, which also contains the $3000 that Emmett's dad had managed to hide from his creditors and leave behind for his sons。 Emmett and Billy are forced to ride the rails from the very center of the nation all the way to New York City, where Duchess and Woolly were headed - and which also happens to be the starting point of the Lincoln Highway。 In the course of their adventures, our heroes encounter an evil preacher, a modern-day Ulysses, and the author of the book that is Billy's lodestar: The Compendium of Heroes, Adventurers, and Other Intrepid Travelers。 Emmett's friend Sally drives all the way to New York City from Nebraska in 20 hours to help them when she is needed。 Emmett, Duchess and Woolly are each, in their own way, attempting to overthrow their ancestors Emmett is determined not to repeat his father's failures。 Duchess wants revenge on his father。 And sensitive, hapless Woolly struggles for autonomy in his rich, illustrious family。 All three are also confronting the problem of the meaning of freedom。 I felt like this novel went a little astray about halfway through。 Too many rather violent twists and turns, some of them pretty implausible。 The ending also felt out of character for Emmett, and I didn't think all the problems of the story had been satisfactorily resolved。 But, overall, I enjoyed spending time with some wonderful characters, and getting an interesting slice of mid-20th-century American life。 Like my reviews? Ho hum。 I did a lot of skimming。 I really don’t like the the overblown writing, the fact that he only develops male characters (wouldn’t pass the Bechdel test), and the general overall smug tone。Like Gentleman of Moscow, the entire premise is based on some sort of nostalgia for a previous time - oligarchy of Russia or the 1950s。 These were really only great times for an elite set of men。If you want to read a young boy on a cross-country adventure, I much preferred « The Selected Works of T。S。 Sp Ho hum。 I did a lot of skimming。 I really don’t like the the overblown writing, the fact that he only develops male characters (wouldn’t pass the Bechdel test), and the general overall smug tone。Like Gentleman of Moscow, the entire premise is based on some sort of nostalgia for a previous time - oligarchy of Russia or the 1950s。 These were really only great times for an elite set of men。If you want to read a young boy on a cross-country adventure, I much preferred « The Selected Works of T。S。 Spivet » by Reif Larsen。Two flaws pointed out by this review are particularly apt。 « Two flaws mar this mostly successful novel。 The first is the narrative’s occasional veer toward twee, a tonal choice likely intended to counterbalance darker strains in the story。 Still, a reader may find the cuteness meter occasionally ticking too high。 The other is a more problematic sub-plot that leans heavily on the “Magical Negro” trope, a term coined by director Spike Lee to describe a Black character whose function is primarily to help white protagonists out of trouble。 »。 https://www。usatoday。com/story/entert。。。 。。。more

The Lincoln Highway strikes me as an attempt at the great American novel。 Much as Steinbeck, Salinger or Kerouac wrote。 In some ways, it achieves this, and in others not so much。The novel paints a vivid picture of 1950s America and tracks the journey of a group of little more than children from Nebraska。 The importance of the car, the riding of railroads, are both elements of the importance of the road journey in American literature。 The madness of New York city reflecting the changing state of The Lincoln Highway strikes me as an attempt at the great American novel。 Much as Steinbeck, Salinger or Kerouac wrote。 In some ways, it achieves this, and in others not so much。The novel paints a vivid picture of 1950s America and tracks the journey of a group of little more than children from Nebraska。 The importance of the car, the riding of railroads, are both elements of the importance of the road journey in American literature。 The madness of New York city reflecting the changing state of post-war America, as do the fates of our characters compared to the families they come from。The idea of stories and storytelling becomes a key theme throughout the novel。 This is done especially well when reflected in the histories, families and backgrounds of the characters。The story is told from multiple points of view, which occasionally leads to the pace slowing and events repeating in times when it feels like it should be advancing quicker。 The characters are also not all that likable, our protagonist Emmett is bland, his brother the wunderkind, and Duchess is fairly insufferable。 Other characters felt as if they didn't really need their own chapters, particularly Sally who felt like she was there just to be a female member of the cast。Towles' writing is excellent and one of the main reasons to read this, although I found this a far less riveting read than A Gentleman in Moscow, possibly due to not having the same interest in capturing the essence of America。 。。。more

I admire writers who can assemble ordinary characters, entwine them in each other's lives and make them fascinating to read about。 Emmett and Billy are brothers whose father has died。 Their farm is being sold and they must leave their home。 Emmett has finished serving a jail sentence for accidentally killing a man and upon leaving the work camp, learns he has two stowaway, Duchess and Wooley。 Well written characters, top to bottom。 I admire writers who can assemble ordinary characters, entwine them in each other's lives and make them fascinating to read about。 Emmett and Billy are brothers whose father has died。 Their farm is being sold and they must leave their home。 Emmett has finished serving a jail sentence for accidentally killing a man and upon leaving the work camp, learns he has two stowaway, Duchess and Wooley。 Well written characters, top to bottom。 。。。more

Here's the thing - this was VERY well written and I loved the characters and the way I saw a world I know nothing about。 Andthe characters were so vivid and real。 It was sad and I wanted happy。 so it probably deserves more stars, but i wanted happy and I got sad。 Here's the thing - this was VERY well written and I loved the characters and the way I saw a world I know nothing about。 Andthe characters were so vivid and real。 It was sad and I wanted happy。 so it probably deserves more stars, but i wanted happy and I got sad。 。。。more

This book reminds me of classic coming of age stories like Catcher in the Rye, but also Of Mice and Men? I have to say that each character is do perfectly developed, with both flaws and attributes, mistakes and triumphs。 I really loved this story- a little slow and heady in parts, but because this is contrasted with young youthful characters it works。 A great adventure tale with a ending that is haunting and yet also beautiful。

Craig T

A long (550+ pages) Huckleberry Finn type of yarn。 People who like books like that will like it。 I did。

I received this book from a publisher give away almost six months ago。 Life got in the way and I am just finishing it now。I don’t like to write reviews that give too much of the book away, so I will just say that if you are struggling to get through the beginning of the book, keep going。 The characters really develop as the story moves along。 The end left me both sad and hopeful。

Linda

Unexpected turn of eventsA wide cast of characters from different walks of life come together in unexpected ways。 I like the storytelling from each characters point of view and how throughout Billy is able to weave his book into their lives。

Denise

Cute story of epic adventurers。 Billy is obsessed with classic adventurers and their stories intertwine with the adventures and characters the 4 boys meet on their travels。

Loved it。 It pulls you in, and you care about the characters and the story。 It’s my first Amor Towles book and now I want to read more。

Initially I was not certain I wanted to read this book。 I loved A Gentleman In Moscow and I was not certain that I would be interested in a road trip that took up 576 pages !! Well, I can affirm that Amor Towles does not disappoint, he is a very talented story teller。 Great characters who add depth and variety at different intervals of the journey。 It kept me interested and amazed throughout the journey。 Just read it !!

Enjoyable read。 Towles is terrific。

I was curious about and easily followed the journey of the four main characters, but found it too long and seemingly off-topic from time to time。 For example, I didn't see how Sally's inclusion added anything to the story line。 Her character was clearly developed and believable, but did not move the story forward, in my opinion。 I believe the detailed references to mythology and historical lives was very helpful。 Each of the four main characters are vividly defined and Towles makes each one eith I was curious about and easily followed the journey of the four main characters, but found it too long and seemingly off-topic from time to time。 For example, I didn't see how Sally's inclusion added anything to the story line。 Her character was clearly developed and believable, but did not move the story forward, in my opinion。 I believe the detailed references to mythology and historical lives was very helpful。 Each of the four main characters are vividly defined and Towles makes each one either someone you really want to succeed or someone you can easily disdain。 I thought it was mostly an enjoyable read, and just wish a few extra characters had been left out。 。。。more

This a book to be read, not listened to。 YOU need to imagine the voices。 Take your time。 Savor the descriptions, emotions, and the interactions between the characters。 It is about 6-7 people with varying depths of exploration and getting to know each one。 It is about relationships, families, friendships, and self awareness or lack thereof。 It has humor, sadness, and mystery。 Towles is a leisurely writer。 He is at times poetic。 Some of the reviews seem a bit bah humbug to me。 This isn't about the This a book to be read, not listened to。 YOU need to imagine the voices。 Take your time。 Savor the descriptions, emotions, and the interactions between the characters。 It is about 6-7 people with varying depths of exploration and getting to know each one。 It is about relationships, families, friendships, and self awareness or lack thereof。 It has humor, sadness, and mystery。 Towles is a leisurely writer。 He is at times poetic。 Some of the reviews seem a bit bah humbug to me。 This isn't about the highway。 It is a journey where people grow (or not!) A unique story, told in a fascinating fashion, The Lincoln Highway is a tale of lives that are twisted, difficult, or sad。 The only character that hasn't been damaged by life, and thus ends up saving the day several times, is 8-year-old Billy, who is precocious。 The end, while logical and almost inevitable, wraps everything up neatly, until you ask yourself what would have happened next。 There are also some uncomfortable questions of what is the moral thing to do。 This book will make a great mov A unique story, told in a fascinating fashion, The Lincoln Highway is a tale of lives that are twisted, difficult, or sad。 The only character that hasn't been damaged by life, and thus ends up saving the day several times, is 8-year-old Billy, who is precocious。 The end, while logical and almost inevitable, wraps everything up neatly, until you ask yourself what would have happened next。 There are also some uncomfortable questions of what is the moral thing to do。 This book will make a great movie! 。。。more

This review is for the audiobook。 Easily my favorite book of the year so far。 Though lengthy, the story moves quickly and the character development is just wonderful。 The story is full of twists and turns I never saw coming, and I found it highly enjoyable even though I’m not one who usually enjoys surprises。 The story is at times humorous and light-hearted-I literally LOL’d a few times, and sad and thought-provoking at other times。 I just loved how the story played out。 It reminded me a bit of This review is for the audiobook。 Easily my favorite book of the year so far。 Though lengthy, the story moves quickly and the character development is just wonderful。 The story is full of twists and turns I never saw coming, and I found it highly enjoyable even though I’m not one who usually enjoys surprises。 The story is at times humorous and light-hearted-I literally LOL’d a few times, and sad and thought-provoking at other times。 I just loved how the story played out。 It reminded me a bit of the movie “O Brother Where Art Thou”。 Invoking the same kind of feels fore me, and with definite parallels in the plot lines。 I highly recommend! 。。。more

Overall, the story is enjoyable and has some funny and tender moments, but I ended up being disappointed for two reasons:1。 It is NOT what I expected it to be。 I was expecting a fun adventure novel about a group of young boys on the run。 However, they reach their destination far earlier than I thought, and the majority of the story is them being split up and doing their own things at the destination, rather than a road trip adventure。 For the book having this title, *shockingly* little time is s Overall, the story is enjoyable and has some funny and tender moments, but I ended up being disappointed for two reasons:1。 It is NOT what I expected it to be。 I was expecting a fun adventure novel about a group of young boys on the run。 However, they reach their destination far earlier than I thought, and the majority of the story is them being split up and doing their own things at the destination, rather than a road trip adventure。 For the book having this title, *shockingly* little time is spent on the Lincoln Highway。 Much of the theme is about the spirit of adventure, but I can’t help feeling there wasn’t really any adventure to be found2。 There is SO much bloat here it’s crazy。 The book is long and spends so, so much time on flashbacks and mini-chapters about side characters, and the characters being split up means each day has to be covered from several perspectives to see what everyone is up to。 The book just drags along with extra bloat that I ended up skimming many parts 。。。more
