Enthralling, adventurous, and full of beauty。 Blood and Moonlight had me hooked from the first page。 Instantly, I stepped into a world full of crime, high stakes murder, and a main character, with mystical powers that makes her a witness to said murders。 This book has similarities to Sherlock Holmes and the Netflix show, Mind Hunter。 You dive into a murder mystery that picks apart a budding serial killer。 A serial killer that is just beginning and puts the entire town on edge (as any serial kill Enthralling, adventurous, and full of beauty。 Blood and Moonlight had me hooked from the first page。 Instantly, I stepped into a world full of crime, high stakes murder, and a main character, with mystical powers that makes her a witness to said murders。 This book has similarities to Sherlock Holmes and the Netflix show, Mind Hunter。 You dive into a murder mystery that picks apart a budding serial killer。 A serial killer that is just beginning and puts the entire town on edge (as any serial killer would)。 Our main character, Catrin/Cat, is an orphan that had run away to the local city's Sanctum to later be employed to the Master Architect; in charge of climbing the building's scaffolds to ensure their structure and safety。 On the night she unbelievably falls and finds herself witness to a murder investigation, she also unlocks gifts she never knew she had or quite frankly, understands。 This murder investigation pulls in a young man named Simon, an investigator of madness from a far-off city。 Seeming to always know when a murder is taking place, she pairs up with him in hopes of solving the case, protecting her guardian -Magister Thomas, and saving another woman from the killer's ever increasing appetite for blood。I found myself unable to put this book down, fully engrossed in the murder mystery aspect。 Quite literally, as I stayed up into the late hours of the night to finish it。 Most mystery thrillers leave a crumb trail for the reader to make their assumptions and solve the case before our main characters。 And though authors most often try to de-rail us, we as readers are able to pin point it no matter the amount of random characters they start throwing into suspicion。 While I was able to pick out the right suspect in the end, Beaty did her very best to throw me off my game。 She had me second, triple, and quadruple questioning myself within the last 25% of the book which was incredibly fun, adding to my suspense and disbelief。 I had so much fun with the psychological thriller our characters had to work out。 They got deep and dirty into the mind of a serial killer。 On top of the murderous thriller plot, Beaty also creates a stunning culture that has historically used the moon and its light as a source of power - a culture that has had to hide as their views are considered sacrilege by the majority culture that reverences the sun。 I am a lover of the moon and all it's divinity so this touched my heart。 It was enthralling and represented issues we have all known to exist throughout the history of man and its many religions。 It was gorgeously written。 Beaty also does a phenomenal job in touching on mental illnesses (her acknowledgments in the end strictly call this out) within a fantasy book。 Our characters in Blood and Moonlight are now some of my favorite characters of all time。 May I just say, Simon and Cat are the most precious sides to one crazy, blood caked coin。 They made me swoon and smile。 They are quite a match; perfect for their imperfections。 Because this was a murder mystery, every side character was suspect and hated by me at some point in time - which truly is a credit to how well Beaty can write a murder mystery。 To the characters that did not end up being the killer: I am sorry and I loved you in the end。 To the character that was the murderer: you are one sick son of a gun。 You deserved it。 I had not read Erin Beaty's previous series, The Traitor's Circle, so I can not attest to her as a writer in terms of growth or in comparison。 I can however say that she is one of my favorite authors who have a release this year。 I can't stress to you enough how beautiful, thrilling, and captivating this book was。 It left me with a book hangover that has me hesitant to read any other murder mystery thrillers in fear that whatever follows would only disappoint。 As of right now, it tops the list of 2022 releases I have read so far! While it currently stands as a standalone book, with an ending that I could be completely content with, I would also not mind a continuance。 Let's just say you wouldn't be doing your shelves a disservice by adding this book's gorgeous cover to the collection。 This however is not just about cover beauty as its contents are even better than the cover could hint at。 I would highly recommend adding this book to your shelves when it is released。 A wondrous 4。5 star read (rounded up to 5 for website purposes)!*a copy was provided by Netgalley for review purposes。 Thank you!* 。。。more

Loved this It’s hard to tell from the opening chapters of this book where the story will progress and how well it will develop That said, the world at hand is promising。 The main character has an engaging and clear voice, and is pretty quickly someone who I am interested in following through a story。 The implied elements of the supernatural and overall sense of uncanny do a good job helping one suspend disbelief when entering into this world as well。 There’s clearly a mystery being set up, and I Loved this It’s hard to tell from the opening chapters of this book where the story will progress and how well it will develop That said, the world at hand is promising。 The main character has an engaging and clear voice, and is pretty quickly someone who I am interested in following through a story。 The implied elements of the supernatural and overall sense of uncanny do a good job helping one suspend disbelief when entering into this world as well。 There’s clearly a mystery being set up, and I certainly find myself interested in following that。 The writing style of this novel is open and engaging, with a pretty clear delineation between the uncanny and reality as it emerges in the opening actions。 This is a balance that is pretty hard to strike and should be something every reader will enjoy about this story。 The author truly did a great job on this。 。。。more

Blood and Moonlight is everything you've come to expect from Erin Beaty。 Amazing characters with fully fleshed out stories within themselves, a high risk plot that moves at a steady pace, and a setting that just sucks you in。 I adore Cat's dynamic with all the characters and even when you THINK you have it all figured out, Beaty throws a curve ball and you are left gasping for air。 Blood and Moonlight is everything you've come to expect from Erin Beaty。 Amazing characters with fully fleshed out stories within themselves, a high risk plot that moves at a steady pace, and a setting that just sucks you in。 I adore Cat's dynamic with all the characters and even when you THINK you have it all figured out, Beaty throws a curve ball and you are left gasping for air。 。。。more

The cover is absolutely gorgeous, and the story was super engaging and interesting。 If you love thrillers and mysteries, especially about serial killers and the psychology behind them, I think you will love this book。 The fantasy elements are lighter and I really think the mystery is the heart of the book。 I can truly say I did not see the ending coming! I would love a sequel, if only to delve more in to Catrin's powers and how they work。 The magick system in this book is so interesting and I really wanted to explore it more than one allows。 Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review! 。。。more

How can someone do something this horrific。 It kept me wanting to continue to find out how this all turns out。 Catrin is a wonderful protagonist character。 Following her story as she tried to unravel the truth behind the murders kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time。 I never could tell who the killer was。 Every single time I would think we got a clue to who it is the plot thickened and I questioned everything! Even when it was revealed who it was I never saw it coming until Catrin realized the truth too。 The fantasy/magical element to this story with the Selenae and their abilities during the moonlight ours was fascinating! I really loved learning about their abilities and how Catrin tied into them。 I do wish we did got a little more about their abilities and how they work。 It was just so fascinating I wanted to know!Catrin and Simon’s romance blossomed so well across the story。 It felt authentic and real。 It didn’t feel rushed or forced。 I thoroughly enjoyed watching the two of them discover their feelings for each other。 When we discover the truth of everything I was like NO WAY。 I couldn’t believe who it was and for the reason they did it。 。。。more

This book was so right up my alley, you have no idea! I love me a good, dark crime thriller, and this one had magic! I honestly could not guess who the killer was, and I love how we had several suspects, and it was only when all the pieces fell into place, in the right order, that it made sense and it was so clear。 I really appreciate that in a mystery, and Erin Beaty did a fantastic job of sprinkling in clues while always raising more questions。 So many questions! About Catrin’s past, about who Simon is, the voices, the Selenae…so many questions, but asked with a trust that the author will reveal all at the right time。 There are no loose ends with this story! It was a very fast-paced story, managing to keep up the intensity while also delivering deep world-building, character development, and a very cool, strict magic system。 My curiosity about the world was piqued right from the start, I was immediately pulled into the story, and Catrin was such a incredible protagonist to follow! She has so much spunk and courage, and she didn’t lack relatability and authenticity。The romance felt very natural—just the way teenagers fall in love。 And I guess there was a little bit of love rhombusing in this one, but I truly didn’t mind! In fact, if you can call it a love triangle, it is the best love triangle I’ve ever read, because I didn’t hate it! Or really even think of it that way。 It was just two separate situations, without any leading on or playing both sides。 Both relationships felt very honest and valuable, and Catrin had very clear intentions with both Remi and Simon。I also really appreciated the author’s note and Juliane’s character, starting with her strange way of talking, and then learning more about her struggle with schizophrenia。 Having had some personal experience with family suffering from this mental illness, I really appreciated the compassion with which Erin Beaty approached the subject, and I think it was very well done。 I hope that Juliane helps readers learn not to fear those with extremely difficult mental illness, but to have more compassion for them instead。Now, the unsavory bits! As I mentioned above, this mystery does not hold back it’s punches, and so it will definitely not be everyone’s cup of tea。 I love myself some true crime, so I wasn’t shocked or offended by the content, but those less accustomed to forensic crime (Criminal Minds, SVU, etc。) may have difficulty with some of the content。 However, while the content (namely deaths of the victims) are gruesome and disturbing, the descriptions are very simple and not excessive, so you understand what happened without any gratuitous details。There was something about this book that really grabbed a hold of me and didn’t let go。 And it wasn’t just the thrilling mystery。 I think it’s that desire for justice we all have, to uncover the truth no matter how ugly it may be。 It is only when everything is exposed to the light (or should I say, the moonlight) that we can grieve the truth, process, and find a way forward。All in all, I have to give this five stars, with a trigger warning。 I will definitely be reading this book again when I want a good creepy mystery, or a boost of inspiration! Yeah, I’m a dark soul sometimes…Trigger Warnings: Rape, Violence, Incest 。。。more

for a book that went on soooooo long, it had surprisingly little to say for itself。 I will admit that the world was interesting at first, but every twist was laughably predictable, the romance embarrassingly dramatic and the fantasy angle was developed in a way that robbed it of any sort of appeal it might have originally had。 also, it must be noted that the story goes out of its way to unleash horrible violence upon basically every single remotely important female character that's not the main for a book that went on soooooo long, it had surprisingly little to say for itself。 I will admit that the world was interesting at first, but every twist was laughably predictable, the romance embarrassingly dramatic and the fantasy angle was developed in a way that robbed it of any sort of appeal it might have originally had。 also, it must be noted that the story goes out of its way to unleash horrible violence upon basically every single remotely important female character that's not the main character, which is made even worse when the reason why is revealed (though it can be quickly figured out)。 。。。more

Still, it felt as though Catrin and Simon’s story isn’t quite finished。 There are quite a few unanswered questions - mostly regarding Catrin’s background and the Selenae。 According to Goodreads, a sequel may be in the works。 I’m certainly rooting for this! 。。。more

I already have a strange fascination with stories about serial killers and sociopaths。 This was a great example of a book that uses that plot device well。 。。。more

A thriller? A romance? It tries to be all three, with a YA coating on top, and I think it would've been far better to sacrifice one of these plot lines to shore up the others。 There was just too much going on and I ended up not caring pretty early in the text。 Also, the romance felt pretty forced, with Simon and Cat having very little chemistry。I will say that the depiction of mental illness seemed pretty fair, spotlighting the humanity of people who suffer from issues like schizophrenia。 I really respected that Beaty highlighted how common it is for those who suffer from this disease to be highly intelligent, as this aspect of the disease is often overlooked。 Conversely, she also didn't romanticize the illness, which I have also seen in more recent novels。Overall I think "Blood and Moonlight" had some strong ideas, but suffered from a lack of focus。 。。。more

I received an advance copy of this book via NetGalley。This young adult read uses a medieval France-inspired setting and overlays that with a grim case of a Jack-the-Ripper-esque criminal and a heady dose of moon magic。 It follows Cat, a teenage orphan who is an assistant on a project to essentially build a massive cathedral devoted to the Sun。 When one night she can mysteriously hear a woman being murdered, she rushes to help and ends up being part of the investigation--and with a keen romantic I received an advance copy of this book via NetGalley。This young adult read uses a medieval France-inspired setting and overlays that with a grim case of a Jack-the-Ripper-esque criminal and a heady dose of moon magic。 It follows Cat, a teenage orphan who is an assistant on a project to essentially build a massive cathedral devoted to the Sun。 When one night she can mysteriously hear a woman being murdered, she rushes to help and ends up being part of the investigation--and with a keen romantic interest in the investigator, Simon, a young man who seems almost too capable of thinking like a serial killer。Some of the positives: the author approaches mental illness with a deft touch。 This book could really open readers' minds to what those thought processes are like and the importance of patience, friendship, and compassion。 The setting is interesting, too, though I was left craving deeper worldbuilding; if there are more books, I hope to understand more about this world and its magic。 Cat's job is fascinating and that premise hooked me from the very start。 That said。。。 Cat's actions also frustrated me at times。 She seems to be in a strange place of privelege, to be able to get buddy-buddy with powerful people so quickly。 She's also the type of lead heroine that all the boys fall in love with, and that's a tiresome trope for me personally。This book should also come with some trigger warnings in published form, as it is quite dark。 Sexual assault happens and there are graphic descriptions of grizzly murders。 That said, the book makes an effort not to dwell on these scenes or glorify what happens。 。。。more

Erin Beaty did SUCH an amazing job at making everyone a suspect, I doubted almost every character at different points of the book。 The resolution of the mystery seemed fitting, and the climax was so tense and well done (I binged the last 35% of the book)。 Seeing the characters unraveling the mind of a killer was engaging and thrilling, and it made so much sense in the end (although I didn't guess the killer accurately until right as it was unfolding haha)! The way the fantastical elements were revealed had me dying to continue reading。 The magic system felt unique, and I liked learning about who Catrin was and why she wasn't raised by her parents。 The romance didn't take over the plot, which was definitely a plus。 I enjoyed how the romance developed and effected everything。 I also loved that we got mental illness representation (and the author's note in the back discussing the representation was also well written- I'm glad Beaty included it)。 Pretty much, what I'm saying, is I loved everything about this book。 I personally cannot find a fault。 It was a super entertaining read, and I desperately need to seek out Erin Beaty's other books now! 。。。more

Cat, like most YA protagonists, is gifted and special in that she has a skillset that enables her to do something nobody else can。 I loved that Cat's job involved architecture; everytime she described the Sanctum and how she felt about it, it just sounded so cool and beautiful。 Cat is also just a likable lead; she never came across as a victim and a lot of what she did/thought made sense for her age。 Now, I don't want to spoil the plot because man there are a lot of red herrings, but I will say that I felt like this really dragged in the middle of the book。 I enjoyed reading and really liked the book, but somewhere around the middle, the tension felt nonexistent。 I still enjoyed it but a lot of the middle just felt like it could have gotten edited out。 That said, Beaty's writing is beautiful。 I love how she described the Sanctum and how the moonlight felt to Cat。 Amidst the surprisingly gory descriptions of the murder victims, the descriptions of characters, clothing, etc。 were wonderfully written。 Speaking of the gore, some of it was surprisingly gross。 I didn't expect the details when I was reading this but it definitely helped。 The killer was giving "Jack the RIpper"- vibes。 And before I forget, SIMON。 I love that boy。 Simon is so sweet and so misunderstood。 The way Beaty wrote him reminded me a lot of a mix of Brian Fuller's depiction of Will Graham and also Ned the Piemaker from Fuller's "Pushing Daisies"。 I ADORED Simon。 I love that he had Jacqueline and Cat helping him with the investigation and how often he praised both of the women's involvement。 He was a lovely character and I love how Beaty ended his part of the book。 Very nice。All in all, this was a fun and surprising read! 。。。more

****Thank you so much to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this ahead of its release。 All thoughts and opinions are my own。 4。5 stars rounded up because there were a few parts that dragged a bit。 Also check trigger warnings。 There are a few gruesome scenes in this book and a lot of death that may disturb some readers。 Did you read Stalking Jack the Ripper and think it needed magic? Then this is the book for you。 While the stories aren’t exactly the same, Blood and Moonlight follows out characters Cat and Simon as they try to figure out who is murdering girls in their city。 There is a soft magic system that is heavily based on moonlight and blood (kind of like the title suggests) that I found super interesting。 The magical abilities the characters have are slowly unraveled through the book。 Things that seem like talents are revealed to be magic, which I really loved because I feel like it gives this book a reason to be reread。 You could definitely find clues to the magic early in the book if you knew what to look for。 I found this books depiction of mental illness to be heartbreaking。 I don’t personally suffer or know anyone who suffers from the mental illnesses in this book but it seemed like good representation to me and there is an author’s note at the end talking about the research that went into it which I appreciated。 The last 20 percent of this book will give you whiplash because it takes so many turns。 Just when I thought I had everything figured out, I was tossed in another completely different direction。 I was not expecting to really love this book。 Honestly I was just drawn in by the absolutely gorgeous cover and I just hoped it would be something I at least liked。 But I really loved this book and look forward to reading more from the author。 。。。more

She had so much of the information in front of her and yet … ugh!!! I also don’t understand why they continued to hold the architect when it was very clear he hadn’t committed the murders。 Seems like they used their one bartering asset to get him out of jail when he was innocent of all charges。 I don’t understand that one。 Other than that, I reserved the last star because I like a good love story and this wasn’t that。 Simon and Cat are boring。 They have their moments of making out, but mostly they were both far too wrapped up in their own self pity parties to remember they liked each other。 Just wasn’t a believable relationship。 If another book is released in this series I don’t know if I’ll read because it was the whole murder mystery and beautiful description of the cathedral that saved this book。Nearly forgot… thank you to Beaty, NetGalley, & Farrah, Straus & Giroux publishing for the eARC copy。 。。。more

What a beautiful cover and endearing main character! It has been a while since I closed the final chapter and the story is still stuck in my head。 However, while reading, the story at times felt slow and I am left with a lot of unanswered questions about the world。

I really enjoyed this! Going into it, I honestly did not expect to like it as much as I did。 I liked the main character, Cat and her story。 I wish the love interest ended up being someone different than who it was, but that's just me。 Something that I wish had been done a little better was the magic system explanation。 I thought the explanations behind how moon magic works were very one-dimensional and sometimes didn't really make sense to me。 Other than that, I really liked the murder mystery a I really enjoyed this! Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review。 Not sure why this book took me soo long to finish! I think I just had too many buddy reads going on and kept putting this one aside。 I really enjoyed the concept of this fantasy world revolving around moon magic。 I also LOVED how it's just one book rather than a series because the ending felt complete and let you wonder about what was next for certain characters。 Catrin and Simon are hunting down a serial Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review。 Not sure why this book took me soo long to finish! The beginning started off with plenty of action! I was drawn in from the get-go and wanted to explore more, but it also made me a little nervous about how the rest of the story was going to go。 It felt fast-paced in the beginning then slowed down to pick back up towards the ending。 I LOVED the twists and turns at the end!! I truly wasn't expecting that and every time I thought I had it figured out SIKE another curveball。 Overall, if you're looking for a whodunit book with a splash of fantasy this is right up your alley。 I plan on reading more books from this author because this one didn't disappoint。 I understood the concept of the fantasy world and found that I wasn't overwhelmed with the world-building like I can be with other fantasy books sometimes。 。。。more

I was happy to say that I wasn't disappointed。 This story at its heart is a murder mystery and as a long time fan of the genre I was rather excited by that however, I think readers who may pick this book up as strictly fantasy fans without a previous enjoyment of the murder mystery genre may find the plot slow with a lot of focus being on world building, character building, and of all things masonry work。 Yet, the main character Catrin is witty, intelligent, and resourceful which makes it a joy to watch her and investigator Simon attempt to solve the grisly murder thrust upon them。 This book is more firmly YA than not but there are somewhat graphic depictions of death and murder if this is something you as a reader are squeamish to you may wish to avoid, There are also discussions of incest, S。A。, and mental health issues including suicide。 The magic system was very interesting and unique adding a bit of flavor to what would otherwise be a very straightforward murder mystery。 It also added to my enjoyment of the story overall。 I will say I really found myself enjoying this book it hit all the notes for me。 I think fans of Kerri Maniscalco, Cassandra Clare, or Naomi Novik will really enjoy reading Blood and Moonlight。 。。。more
