Summary

It looks like a familiar story: A woman reeling from a great loss with too much time on her hands and too much booze in her glass watches her neighbors, sees things she shouldn't see, and starts to suspect the worst。 But looks can be deceiving。 。 。 。

Casey Fletcher, a recently widowed actress trying to escape a streak of bad press, has retreated to her family's lake house in Vermont。 Armed with a pair of binoculars and several bottles of liquor, she passes the time watching Tom and Katherine Royce, the glamorous couple living in the house across the lake。

Everything about the Royces seems perfect。 Their marriage。 Their house。 The bucolic lake it sits beside。 But when Katherine suddenly vanishes, Casey becomes obsessed with finding out what happened to her。 In the process, she discovers the darker truths lurking just beneath the surface of the Royces' picture-perfect marriage。 Truths no suspicious voyeur could begin to imagine--even with a few drinks under her belt。

Like Casey, you'll think you know where this story is headed。

Think again。

Because once you open the door to obsession, you never know what you might find on the other side。

The House Across the Lake by Riley Sager starts off with a bang and barrels along until about 70%。 It, then, reached a twist that I felt was too contrived。 Sager made it work but I would have preferred another conclusion to this mystery。 What I did really enjoy was the characters。 They were multi-layered and fascinating。 The atmosphere was isolated and claustrophobic so if you are looking for a chill, this might be the book for you。

THE HOUSE ACROSS THE LAKE is Riley Sager's sixth thriller and yet again uses an unreliable female protagonist, but this time, she's got a drinking problem! -_- This book is my least favorite installment by the author and will be hit or miss with fans alike。 I can't really dive into the plot without giving away the twist/s (which I figured out pretty early on in some aspect) and the publisher is acting like this is the next great twist to come to mystery / thriller fiction novels。 That being said THE HOUSE ACROSS THE LAKE is Riley Sager's sixth thriller and yet again uses an unreliable female protagonist, but this time, she's got a drinking problem! -_- This book is my least favorite installment by the author and will be hit or miss with fans alike。 I can't really dive into the plot without giving away the twist/s (which I figured out pretty early on in some aspect) and the publisher is acting like this is the next great twist to come to mystery / thriller fiction novels。 That being said, the story focuses on Casey Fletcher, a widowed actress who has received criticism in the media by her behavior following her husband's death。 Casey is trying to live a reclusive life in rural Vermont at her family's house where she drinks away her grief, but after saving her supermodel neighbor Katherine from drowning, her life is forever changed。 Katherine and Casey forge a friendship where subtle clues about Katherine's marriage begin to worry Casey, especially after disappearing after a fight with her husband。 I have to give praise to the author for continually entertaining with his writing, because the book is actually really well written。 I just feel like this book, just like Survive the Night (which I really enjoyed) have been stories already told。 I can't deny that this book is fun and will entertain readers, and I will say that I appreciated the author's journey into a different kind of twist。 I will still read books by the author, but I would appreciate if the author chose to change the types of protagonists that he uses in these books。 。。。more

What a fantastic book! THE HOUSE ACROSS THE LAKE has been high on my anticipated reads list because I love all the stories from Riley Sager。 Each summer we get a new banger and 2022 is no different! Everything you think you know or can predict is going to get tossed in the air and whirled around over and over before landing。 You are in for the ride of your life with this one。 I loved the atmosphere and location。 I had a wonderful time with the POV of our main character。 I absolutely went bonkers for the twists and turns。 I actually read the final 30% with my head on my forehead, mouth agape, and unable to finish fast enough。 I LOVED IT!And for crying out loud, people。。。 stop spying on your neighbors so much, okay!? 。。。more

WOW! What a book。 This is the first I’ve read by this author and certainly won’t be the last。The story runs along at a good pace with lots of twists and turns, many I was not expecting。 It held my attention from start to finish and struggled to put it down。 This is a must edge of your seat read。Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in return for an honest review。 It was an absolute pleasure。

Just as I thought I had Riley Sager figured out, I was definitely wrong。 The guy can actually twist things around。 Tight and good。 This psychological thriller has everything that could possibly give me the chills。 The crazy minds in plotting, the hot neighbor that you thought you know better than to stay too close by, the famous couple that lives across whose lives were on full display, dead husbands, missing people, lies, deceit, secrets, drunkenness, alcohol reprieve, money, fame and revenge。 Give it a little mix with some sort of new touch as an icing to the cake from Riley Sager’s book of thriller recipe and you got yourself a mind blowing read! It is so hard not to give away the plot and spoil the entire thing。 However, here’s a clue。 If you did not like the last book he released(I know a lot of people who thought the same as I do) House Across the Lake is a fresh one! Rear Window。The Woman in the Window。 The Girl on the Train。If you liked any of those, Riley Sager’s The House Across the Lake is for you。 What do you get when you have a pair of binoculars, a famous actress turned alcoholic widow and a lot of time on her hands? Where to start? I feel super conflicted about this one。 On the one hand, Riley Sager always has me excited about reading his books (despite a couple of disappointments along the way)。 So naturally, I picked up 'The House Across the Lake' without even reading the plot, as I don't need to, I already know I want to read it。 However, a few pages in I was afraid it would be another 'woman-in-the-window-girl-on-the-train' kind of book。 Which it was。 Up until it wasn't。 And when it wasn't, it was fun, Where to start? Yeah, kind of。 Needless to say, I believe this will be a very polarizing book。 Then again, that only makes it much more fun to discuss。 。。。more

OK utter honesty here。 I am a Riley Sager fan。 I have enjoyed everyone of his books, most were 5 stars。 I reached out to a friend when I first started reading this one, because I was annoyed and wondered if I was alone。 I am soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo。。。ooooooooooooo over the drunk woman who can't remember what really happened。 I was over it about 3 years ago。 Nope scratch that I was over it 5 years ago。 Women read these books and we don't want to see ourselves as the drunk, hot OK utter honesty here。 I am a Riley Sager fan。 I have enjoyed everyone of his books, most were 5 stars。 I reached out to a friend when I first started reading this one, because I was annoyed and wondered if I was alone。 I am soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo。。。ooooooooooooo over the drunk woman who can't remember what really happened。 I was over it about 3 years ago。 Nope scratch that I was over it 5 years ago。 Women read these books and we don't want to see ourselves as the drunk, hot mess, who can't remember anything。 We want to be the badass, smart women, who takes down all the bad guys。 So fair warning, these are the thrillers we want to read。 Now that is over。 I shall post no spoilers so this will be an odd review。 The beginning was slow and I was very sad because I thought it was going to be a 2 star read for me。 Then the middle had me, OH HOLY CRAP, and it became a 5 star read。 I did have to suspend a little belief towards the end of the book and I think I settled on a 3。5 star rating that I would round up to 4。 Whew。 That was long and I am sorry for that but when you read it you will completely understand。 I promise。 Thank you to Netgalley, the publishers, and the author for allowing me the options to read and review。 。。。more

Definite Woman in the Window 2。0。 Drunk woman spying on house across the way。 Did she see something or didn’t she? Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the gifted e-copy。Ummm。。。so I really wanted to like this book, because Riley Sager is one of my favorites。 Unfortunately, it was just okay for me。 The premise of a woman spying on neighbors across the lake and seeing some sketchy things happening was interesting (even though it's been done before)。 There is a bit of a paranormal twist towards the end which is definitely pretty different from other books I've read with a similar plot, so that was fun。 Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the gifted e-copy。Ummm。。。so I really wanted to like this book, because Riley Sager is one of my favorites。 Unfortunately, it was just okay for me。 The premise of a woman spying on neighbors across the lake and seeing some sketchy things happening was interesting (even though it's been done before)。 There is a bit of a paranormal twist towards the end which is definitely pretty different from other books I've read with a similar plot, so that was fun。 I also liked the tension that built with the alternating timelines (Before and Now), especially since we weren't sure who was tied up and who did the tying up。However, I found the first half of the book incredibly slow。 I DID stay up until 1 am last night finishing it because once I hit the last 25% I needed to keep going - but up until then, it was a whole lot of build up。The other thing that I really wasn't a fan of was the drunk and unreliable main character。 WHY are there so many female main characters lately that are either drunks or addicts of some sort? It's overdone, to be honest。 Unreliable is fine - it makes things interesting - but the drunk/addict MC's (especially female) are getting old。 。。。more

I definitely didn’t see the ending of this coming。 In fact pretty much all of my theories were wrong! I was expecting a thriller and not something with a paranormal twist to it so that did come as a surprise although I didn’t hate it, it certainly wasn’t something I was expecting anyway。 Overall I really like Riley Sagar as an author and although this wasn’t one of my favourite books, I did enjoy it。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Early on, I was convinced Casey had Boone tied up in the spare bedroom。 I was so very wrong。 To be honest, this one went a little off the rails, for me, with its possession/serial killer plot development。 But I have to give it three stars because the author consistently delivered on suspense, and the story was so imaginative and engaging that I needed to get to the end。 (I also no longer want to own a house by the lake。)

The setting could've been a character of it's own, tbh。But I also really loved the way this one unfolded。 There were a lot of hints about what was happening but the big twist was still incredibly well done。 I also really liked the main character。 I don't always love Sager's main characters but Casey really owned her flaws and I loved that。I also loved the Rear Window vibes! I loved watching this story unfold from afar until all the action snuck up and was right in your face。So this was everything I wanted and more。 I absolutely loved it and already can't wait to read it again!! Though I didn't love this one as much as Sager's earliest novels, it was entertaining and it kept me intrigued until the final pages。 The narrator, Casey, is very much an alcoholic, which becomes readily apparent from the get-go。。。so right away readers have to determine whether they can really trust anything Casey is saying or seeing。 As she spies upon her neighbors across the picturesque lake in a sleepy Vermont town, she becomes convinced that her neighbor Katherine, a former supermodel, is in Though I didn't love this one as much as Sager's earliest novels, it was entertaining and it kept me intrigued until the final pages。 The narrator, Casey, is very much an alcoholic, which becomes readily apparent from the get-go。。。so right away readers have to determine whether they can really trust anything Casey is saying or seeing。 As she spies upon her neighbors across the picturesque lake in a sleepy Vermont town, she becomes convinced that her neighbor Katherine, a former supermodel, is in grave danger。 Though the lake is serene and beautiful, Casey begins to suspect that the bodies of three missing women from years ago may have ended up near the lake, and as such, the waters aren't as calming to her as to some。 But soon readers realize there is more to Casey's story and the death of her husband Len a few years ago than meets the surface。 Throw in an ex-cop neighbor who is very handsome, but also very sneaky as well as his friend, a state policewoman who begins asking questions, and the story becomes even more layered and twisted。 The book does contain a bit of a supernatural spin, and it throws off some major Rear Window vibes。 Classic Sager with the jaw-dropping twist which was a bit too good to be believable, but I did enjoy the reading for the most part。 。。。more

3。5 stars。 Sager is a "hit or miss" author for me。 I loved Final Girls and Home Before Dark。 This is his first one that has a supernatural-esque explanation, and if it wasn't for that I would have liked it a lot more。 The dual timelines were also hard to follow。 There was a really good twist which I did not see coming and made me want to go back and reread some parts。 3。5 stars。 Sager is a "hit or miss" author for me。 I loved Final Girls and Home Before Dark。 This is his first one that has a supernatural-esque explanation, and if it wasn't for that I would have liked it a lot more。 The dual timelines were also hard to follow。 There was a really good twist which I did not see coming and made me want to go back and reread some parts。 。。。more

3。5 stars。 Well, I’m not sure about this one。 An alcoholic woman, former actress Casey Fletcher, appears to be grieving the death of her husband while isolating at the lake house where he drowned。 She drinks a lot, A LOT, and spends her days with powerful binoculars spying at the marital strife occurring at the house across the lake。 One day, she actually saves the woman of that house from drowning; and when she later disappears, Casey suspects the husband of foul play。 So far, ok, but then it v 3。5 stars。 Well, I’m not sure about this one。 An alcoholic woman, former actress Casey Fletcher, appears to be grieving the death of her husband while isolating at the lake house where he drowned。 She drinks a lot, A LOT, and spends her days with powerful binoculars spying at the marital strife occurring at the house across the lake。 One day, she actually saves the woman of that house from drowning; and when she later disappears, Casey suspects the husband of foul play。 So far, ok, but then it veers off into a weird paranormal tale that I absolutely was not expecting。 Other readers might like the freaky twist, but it was just too wacky for me。 。。。more

I received this ARC audiobook from Netgalley & the publisher。 This is my honest review。In the beginning, this book was giving me Woman in the Window, Gone Girl & Rear Window vibes。 Which was disappointing, I read a lot of thrillers so I prefer something fresh to read otherwise I lose internet。 Thankfully the story does start going in different directions。 There are quite a few twists that I didn’t expect at all! I enjoyed this book but I wish some of the red herrings were actually relevant。 Ther I received this ARC audiobook from Netgalley & the publisher。 This is my honest review。In the beginning, this book was giving me Woman in the Window, Gone Girl & Rear Window vibes。 Which was disappointing, I read a lot of thrillers so I prefer something fresh to read otherwise I lose internet。 Thankfully the story does start going in different directions。 There are quite a few twists that I didn’t expect at all! This is one of those books you should go into blind。 Just know you are in for a wild ride, its starts out pretty typical but then the drop hits you。 There were so many twists and turns towards the end that the story completely changes into a complicated tangle。The first half felt very familiar to me, think Woman in the Window vibes。 Our main character Casey Fletcher, a widowed actress, escapes to her family’s lake house after some awful moments in the press。 She drinks herself into oblivion ever This is one of those books you should go into blind。 Just know you are in for a wild ride, its starts out pretty typical but then the drop hits you。 There were so many twists and turns towards the end that the story completely changes into a complicated tangle。The first half felt very familiar to me, think Woman in the Window vibes。 Our main character Casey Fletcher, a widowed actress, escapes to her family’s lake house after some awful moments in the press。 She drinks herself into oblivion every night until she sees the binoculars sitting next to her。 Tom and Katherine Royce are staying in the house across the lake。 She is a famous model and he runs a tech company。 One day Katherine almost drowns in the lake and Casey is able to save her。 From there the relationship between them grows, and Casey finds it hard not to spy on the famous couple。 When Katherine goes missing, Casey becomes consumed with finding out what happened。 For over half the book I felt like the story was very familiar。 The unreliable narrator thinks she sees something across the lake。 With all of Casey’s drinking you just don’t know what you can believe, but when the twist hits it changes everything。 This is one of those twists that you either hate or love because it is so outlandish it’s hard to believe。 The last 30% of the book went pretty fast for me。 There were so many twits and turns I couldn’t really stop reading until I knew exactly what was going on。 The lake atmosphere was perfect for this story。 Add in a stormy night and you have the foolproof recipe for a creepy thriller that will have you jumping in fear。 There’s something about a dark lake at night that gives anyone the chills。 Thank you to Netgalley for the arc in exchange for my review。 I really enjoyed this one。 The twist wasn’t my favorite but I still liked the spooky atmosphere。 。。。more

Let me start by saying I am a huge Riley Sager fan, he puts it out, I will read it。 However, this one didn't hit as hard to be as LTIL or Final Girls。 This story is set up on a rich AF secluded homes on the lake in Vermont where we have an alcoholic ex-Broadway star (Casey) and a retired supermodel (Katherine) and the men who love them。 The twist was completely unexpected so I can give Sager that, he had me going "WAIT WHAT?!" *3。5 stars* Review of Netgalley

This is possibly the most ridiculous Riley Sager book yet! It starts as a Rear Window type suspense with an unreliable protagonist (she is an alcoholic) and then there is a big tonal shift about three quarters of the way through, which was a shocker。 As always with Riley Sager, the narrative was entertaining, the writing was fluid and accessible and the characters were easy to spend time with, albeit one-dimensional for the most part。 I think that this may be the most divisive of his offerings t This is possibly the most ridiculous Riley Sager book yet!
