Summary

The Last Summer is the first in an epic, sweeping historical series by Karen Swan, set in and around the Scottish island of St Kilda。

When the residents of St Kilda ask to be evacuated from their remote island home in the summer of 1930, it’s in search of a better life on the mainland rather than the scratch existence on their mountain in the sea。

For 18-year old tomboy Effie Gillies, it’s a bittersweet departure。 She’s the best young climber on the island, as skilled and brave as any of the men。 But it is Effie’s expansive knowledge of local bird life that leads her to taking up a position as curator of Dumfries House’s ornithological collection - and back into the arms of Lord Dumfries’ son and heir, Sholto。

During her last summer on St Kilda, Effie had been Sholto’s guide, and their attraction had seemed irresistible but, in the glamorous polite society of Ayrshire, it is clear they are worlds apart。 When a body is discovered on the island, soon after the evacuation, a scandal erupts as she is implicated。 Sholto knows she’s keeping secrets – but are they even her own?

Wild and wonderful I throughly enjoyed this book。 It describes how things were in the Hebrides but also how it must have been for those leaving St Kilda。 Then on to how dreams come true but also with a warning attached。 Didn’t enjoy the ending but I realise there must be more books。 Good book though

Very interesting, well-researched historical fiction。 Compelling story and main characters。 What the hell happened to the ending?! The author walks the reader to the top of the mountain and then abandons them! Deliberate cliff hanger or is there an IQ minimum to figure out the ending? As can often be the case in the first of a series, the pace was slower overall but it allowed for world building。 The cast of characters was rich and varied and I enjoyed how character driven this book was- I look forward to meeting them all again over the next books。 This had a completely different vibe than Karen’s previous books and I thought it was great。 I’m already looking forward to next year!CW: death of animals, assault/violence towards a woman。 。。。more

The book synopsis covers the story but I just wanted to say I’ve always enjoyed Karen Swan’s book but this is something different and I was totally engaged and enthralled from the start。 The fact that it’s the first in a series is exciting and I look forward to reading the other stories。 Effie’s story brings to life a different way of living - it’s a close knit, remote community and so far removed from anything I know。 The story really draws you in & I could not read it quick enough but I was sa The book synopsis covers the story but I just wanted to say I’ve always enjoyed Karen Swan’s book but this is something different and I was totally engaged and enthralled from the start。 The fact that it’s the first in a series is exciting and I look forward to reading the other stories。 Effie’s story brings to life a different way of living - it’s a close knit, remote community and so far removed from anything I know。 The story really draws you in & I could not read it quick enough but I was sad to finish it too。 To realise that St Kilda is an actual place only added to the enjoyment。I read this as an Amazon first reads choice so the downside is I have even longer to wait for the next instalment - please write quickly Karen!! 。。。more

Good historical fiction novel - ending seemed a bit rushed and unfinished (but then discovered book first in series so guess that why the book ended on a cliff hanger)Very believable characters although for such a tough outdoor tomboy, the heroine seemed to do a lot of fainting …

What a beautiful setting for a story, and a beautiful main character。 This historical fiction set in 1930 tells the story of Effie Gillies, a young girl living on the island of St Kilda。 The island is remote and unforgiving, with the inhabitants scaling cliff faces to hunt and relying on their skills to survive。 Having lost her brother, Effie has learnt the skills required to carry out the ‘mens work’ in order to provide for her and her father, much to the distaste of some of the other men on the island。 She ferociously defends her right to provide for her family and defies the traditional roles that the islanders usually carry out。 When the island becomes host to two high society visitors, Effie finds herself in charge of guiding their visit after her knowledge of the local wildlife becomes apparent。 The Earl of Dumfries and his son Sholto are impressed by her knowledge and her skills。 Over the course of the week they partake in a number of ‘adventures’ that are part of Effie’s daily life。 But Effie finds for the first time that she is falling in love with Sholto, and their familiarity and friendship is frowned upon by the rest of her community。 When the time comes for Sholto and the Earl to leave, Effie is heartbroken。 Three months later the islanders learn that their request to be evacuated to the mainland and found suitable accommodation and employment is granted。 Upon moving to the mainland, Effie and her father receive an unexpected visitor in the form of the Earl, who offers Effie a job at his estate curating his ornithology collection。 But when Effie makes the trip to the Earl’s estate, she discovers Sholto appears less than happy to see her。 This book is based around a true story, in terms of the history of St Kilda and the evacuation of its inhabitants in the 1930s but the characters and the events are fiction。 I loved his book so much。 It was a refreshing read, based around nature and wildness, down to earth living and simplicity。 I think my favourite part of this book was Effie’s reaction to seeing her own reflection for the first time- it literally made me grin from ear to ear。 I loved Effie’s views on nature, for example, that flowers are more beautiful in their natural setting than in a vase。 My only regret about this book was that I felt the ending was too fast。I definitely recommend this book if you are seeking something different to anything else you’ll read this year。 It is a beautiful story in beautiful settings, with a strong and determined female lead who proves time and time again that she is as good as her male counterparts。 。。。more

It took a bit to get into, but then I loved it。 The ending was different than I expected。 I want to read it again to see if I noticed anything new。

This book was fantastic! From the first page I was hooked and pleased at how accurately the historical setting was。 I cannot wait for book two and would highly recommend this to anyone who likes historical fiction and learning about a forgotten part of history。

This is a new direction for Karen Swan as this is a historical story that is part of a triology。 Its set in the beautiful Scottish Island of St Kilda in the 1930's where there are only 38 inhabitants 。 The story is told through the eyes of Effie who is 18 。 Visitors come to the Island to see what there life is like - one of these visitors is the Earl and his son who come to see the many birds that are wild here。 Effie and the Son Sholto form a bond but she lives on the Island and won't leave and This is a new direction for Karen Swan as this is a historical story that is part of a triology。 Its set in the beautiful Scottish Island of St Kilda in the 1930's where there are only 38 inhabitants 。 The story is told through the eyes of Effie who is 18 。 Visitors come to the Island to see what there life is like - one of these visitors is the Earl and his son who come to see the many birds that are wild here。 Effie and the Son Sholto form a bond but she lives on the Island and won't leave and he lives in a big house on the mainland。 Circumstances change and all of the Islanders are forced to leave and live on the mainland。 Effie and Shotlos' paths cross again。。。。。。This is such an atmospheric story I loved it and can't believe it ends how it does making you want to read the next book !!! 。。。more

Thanks to Netgalley for the review copy of this book。 I’ve been a long term fan of Karen Swan’s books, always enjoying the flowing prose filled with descriptive sentences that allow the readers to really immerse themselves in the setting as well as the story。 Whether the setting is Spain, Rome, Norway or Canada, there is a real sense of place in her books。 This time her setting is St Kilda and the Scottish mainland in the 1930s, at the time of the evacuation of the inhabitants of the island of S Thanks to Netgalley for the review copy of this book。 I’ve been a long term fan of Karen Swan’s books, always enjoying the flowing prose filled with descriptive sentences that allow the readers to really immerse themselves in the setting as well as the story。 Whether the setting is Spain, Rome, Norway or Canada, there is a real sense of place in her books。 This time her setting is St Kilda and the Scottish mainland in the 1930s, at the time of the evacuation of the inhabitants of the island of St Kilda, whose meagre population struggles for survival in a centuries old manner, cut off from much of modern conveniences。 It is told through the eyes of Effie Gillies, a wild tom boy type whose skill at all the men’s work required for their survival, including rope work along the cliffs, captures the attention of Lord Sholto when he visits with his father, the Earl of Dumfries, just before the evacuation。 She becomes their guide, her knowledge and understanding of birds catching the earl’s attention and admiration。 But it’s his son who finds her more than a source of information, and his attention becomes irresistible to Effie。 The two are drawn together, ever closer, until circumstances forces them apart。 The novel is the first of a trilogy, something new for Swan, as well as taking on historical fiction for the whole of a novel, rather than just a parallel story, as she has done on occasion。 But just as in her past novels, the setting is wonderfully created with such loving detail there is no doubt about the meticulous research that went into it。 And the time period rings true, the accuracy seemingly spot on。 As a writer of historical fiction, I can say that is no easy feat and one of the reasons I am drawn to her novels is her attention to these kind of details so seamlessly slipped in。 This novel is no different。 The Cinderella story is also told with heart and understanding of Effie and draws the reader in, though at a few points it presents a little more facile than usually found in her novels。 Its place as the first of a trilogy may have led the decision on the ending, which for me I would have liked to be a little less abrupt。 Still, it’s an exhilarating tale, one that captured me immediately and I finished in only a few sittings。 。。。more

What a great setting! The remote island of St。Kilda is fascinating in itself, with 36 inhabitants making ends meet。 The transition to the mainland was always going to be hard for them all, especially in 1930 , when times were hard。 The love story between Effie and Sholto is a little bit twee, but it doesn’t spoil an enjoyable escapist story。

This was a very good book。 For fans of Karen Swan, we know she’s a great story teller, intelligent writing and always includes the history in the setting of the book。 This one set in St Kilda, a now evacuated small archipelago in Scotland。 This was their story。 I would never have known about this little wonder and now it’s on my bucket list of places to go see! I have read a few of Karen's books and loved them but this one I didn't love。I found the first half was a bit of a slog until they were evacuated and then for me it really picked up。 I know we had to have the back story of where it all began and I'll be honest I had to skim the dogs bit。 I found it upsetting and unnecessary。 Effie is quite a character, very much a tomboy。 I loved her fighting spirit。 The ending is left on a bit of a cliff hanger as there are more to follow。 Not sure if I will re I have read a few of Karen's books and loved them but this one I didn't love。I found the first half was a bit of a slog until they were evacuated and then for me it really picked up。 I know we had to have the back story of where it all began and I'll be honest I had to skim the dogs bit。 I found it upsetting and unnecessary。 Effie is quite a character, very much a tomboy。 I loved her fighting spirit。 The ending is left on a bit of a cliff hanger as there are more to follow。 Not sure if I will read the next one。Thanks to Netgalley and Pan Macmillan for the ARC in return for an honest review。 。。。more

I love Karen Swan and was really excited to read her new historical novel。 It's a departure from her usual women's fiction/Christmas novels but just as fabulous!Set in 1930, teenager Effie Gillies lives on the remote island of St Kilda, one of a dwindling population of only 36 people。 It is a harsh life, with no amenities and a constant battle against the elements。 Due to her elder brother's death and her father's growing frailty, Effie has become the family's main wage earner。 She dresses like I love Karen Swan and was really excited to read her new historical novel。 It's a departure from her usual women's fiction/Christmas novels but just as fabulous!Set in 1930, teenager Effie Gillies lives on the remote island of St Kilda, one of a dwindling population of only 36 people。 It is a harsh life, with no amenities and a constant battle against the elements。 Due to her elder brother's death and her father's growing frailty, Effie has become the family's main wage earner。 She dresses like one of the men, hunts for their food and is one of the best climbers on the island。 However, a daring stunt to win a race down the cliff-face against one of the island boys inadvertently impresses two important visitors to the island: the Earl of Dumfries and his twenty-three-year-old son Sholto。 The Earl is obsessed with collecting rare bird's eggs and hires Effie to show him and Sholto the island, much to the annoyance of the other villagers。 Having much in common (apart from from their class) Effie and Sholto soon become friends but will their friendship survive the islanders' evacuation to the mainland, where it soon becomes clear Sholto lives in a whole other world? The Last Summer is a poignant story of first love。 Effie and Sholto come from very different backgrounds but share a love of outdoor life and nature, particularly birds。 When the islanders vote to be evacuated to mainland Scotland, it is a huge culture shock for Effie, who is used to the freedoms of island life and being treated like a man。 She wears a too-big skirt held up by a bent nail, walks around barefoot and has never seen her reflection in a mirror。 Now she is forced to conform and hide who she really is。Running alongside Effie and Sholto's fledgling romance is a tale of murder and intrigue。 While Effie manages to win over new friends and colleagues with her artless charm, she also makes dangerous enemies。 What really happened on that last day on the island and will it come back to haunt her?Meticulously researched, The Last Summer is one of those books that makes you believe you are actually there, from the wilds of St Kilda to a stately home in Scotland - Downton Abbey fans will love that part! The characters are brilliant and I particularly loved Effie。 The only snag for me was that the book ended very abruptly, on a major cliff-hanger! Aargh! However, The Last Summer is a five-star read and I have no hesitation in recommending it to Karen Swan's fans and anyone who loves historical fiction with a strong sense of place。Thank you to Karen Swan and Pan for my copy of this book, which I requested from NetGalley and reviewed voluntarily。 。。。more

5+ StarsI absolutely loved this story, I loved everything about it。 It has a slightly different feel from Karen Swan's previous books but, in my opinion, she has taken her storytelling to another level。 It is set around the real events of the St Kilda evacuation of 1930, something I only vaguely knew about, though I have since done some research。 This set the scene for me and the author brought the way people lived on the island to life and I could really relate to their hardships and community。 5+ StarsI absolutely loved this story, I loved everything about it。 It has a slightly different feel from Karen Swan's previous books but, in my opinion, she has taken her storytelling to another level。 It is set around the real events of the St Kilda evacuation of 1930, something I only vaguely knew about, though I have since done some research。 This set the scene for me and the author brought the way people lived on the island to life and I could really relate to their hardships and community。I loved the characters, they are so well written and well-developed that I could really relate to them。 Effie is a young St Kildan, who struggles every day to provide for her and her father, who cannot。 She climbs the rocks to get eggs and birds for food and does it as well as any man on the remote island。 She fights the prejudices of the men to do this and I admired her so much, I just loved her feisty nature。 She is an expert ornithologist too and this and her determination is what will give her hope for the future。Sholto is the son and heir of the Lord Dumfries’ who visits the isles to collect eggs for his collections。 Sholto's attraction to Effie is undeniable but their backgrounds put a huge obstacle in the way。 I like Sholto a lot。 The story is full of wonderful characters and they all went towards creating a fabulous cast for this book。I didn't realise when I started that this book would be part of a series, not something Karen Swan usually does, so I was devastated at the end that I was left in suspense! I even shouted out NO。。。to my husband's great amusement。 I do hope I don't have to wait for too long for the next book in the series。 I highly recommend this book, it has everything you could want from a really good book。 In my opinion, Karen Swan has outdone herself with this story。 。。。more
