Adele Parks' thriller domestic noir novels have been becoming progressively darker and complex with each new book。 The Two of Us gave us a heroine who was also a bigamist - with One Last Secret she pushes the boundaries again。 Dora is a high-class sex worker who is ready to quit。 But one last job with an old client in the south of France brings shocks and surprises, and puts her in very real danger。 Can Dora survive and turn her life around? This was a real page turner。 Dora is a very cool and ho Adele Parks' thriller domestic noir novels have been becoming progressively darker and complex with each new book。 The Two of Us gave us a heroine who was also a bigamist - with One Last Secret she pushes the boundaries again。 Dora is a high-class sex worker who is ready to quit。 But one last job with an old client in the south of France brings shocks and surprises, and puts her in very real danger。 Can Dora survive and turn her life around? This was a real page turner。 Dora is a very cool and honest narrator, unashamed of her choices but willing to explain them to the reader。 Of course she is keeping some secrets, which all adds to the suspense, but the reader feels they can trust her, and more importantly, empathise with her, even if her life choices wouldn't be theirs。The plot is somewhat far-fetched if you start analysing it, but Dora is such an interesting character I was willing to roll with it。 It's well-paced with chapters taking you back to the past for a breather, and secrets unfolding at a satisfying rate。As always with an Adele Parks' story, expect plenty twists and turns and a very satisfying conclusion。 。。。more

Adele Parks is a new Author for me and after reading this book, I can't help feeling like I have been missing out。 I absolutely loved this book and the writing is superb - there is tension and suspense throughout and you will find it difficult to put this book down once started。 This is a suspense thriller which will keep you guessing until the very end。 As an aside, whilst the last chapter is enjoyable, it's a little confusing at first (as to who this character actually is) and I'm not sure it Adele Parks is a new Author for me and after reading this book, I can't help feeling like I have been missing out。 I absolutely loved this book and the writing is superb - there is tension and suspense throughout and you will find it difficult to put this book down once started。 This is a suspense thriller which will keep you guessing until the very end。 As an aside, whilst the last chapter is enjoyable, it's a little confusing at first (as to who this character actually is) and I'm not sure it is entirely necessary。 Many thanks to NetGallery and HQ Publishers for allowing me to get a copy of this book - HIghly recommended。 。。。more

I received an ARC of this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review。It is trademark "Parks" in it's narrative style and scene building。 Dora is a woman who has undergone several reinventions of herself as her mistakes in life necessitate。 She is now a sex worker in London。 The narrative is told by Dora with a "take it or leave it attitude'。 These are the facts she says, they may change what you feel about me but nevertheless here they are。We spend quite a long time getting to know Dor I received an ARC of this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review。It is trademark "Parks" in it's narrative style and scene building。 Dora is a woman who has undergone several reinventions of herself as her mistakes in life necessitate。 She is now a sex worker in London。 The narrative is told by Dora with a "take it or leave it attitude'。 These are the facts she says, they may change what you feel about me but nevertheless here they are。We spend quite a long time getting to know Dora before the story line moves onto the main events。 Once we get there Adele Parks moves the narrative at pace and is certainly able to up the tension for the reader。 Some of the events seem almost too far fetched to be believable and there were times when we moved away from the main event to go back in time。 For me the ending was a little tame and the last reveal seems pointless unless this is going to lead to a follow up novel。I enjoyed where the book took me in the main but it lacked something to take it into the heights of thriller writing 。。。more

Rating: 4。3/5Adele Parks has a very fluent, engaging style of writing that invariably makes for entertaining reading。 Her latest offering, "One Last Secret" is no exception。 This is now her 22nd novel and it has been noticeable that in recent years the content has tended to have a slightly darker tinge to it at times。 That is, once again, the case here as we are introduced to a lead character in the form of Dora, who plies her trade as a high-end escort who also offers extra services to her well Rating: 4。3/5Adele Parks has a very fluent, engaging style of writing that invariably makes for entertaining reading。 Her latest offering, "One Last Secret" is no exception。 This is now her 22nd novel and it has been noticeable that in recent years the content has tended to have a slightly darker tinge to it at times。 That is, once again, the case here as we are introduced to a lead character in the form of Dora, who plies her trade as a high-end escort who also offers extra services to her well-heeled clients。The author's use of characterisation is, as I have come to expect, top notch and the portrayal of Dora is particularly impressive。 This is perhaps just as well, as Dora is primarily responsible for conveying the narrative, although there are also brief interjections from the viewpoints of four other characters at various points。 It wasn't long before I had found myself fully drawn into Dora's world and was feeling both sympathetic and empathetic towards her。 The pace of the novel is excellent。 I barely felt as though I had sat down to start the book before I found that I was already halfway through the 384 pages。 It has to be said that there is a little bit of a gear change when the story shifts back to a point eleven years earlier in order to provide some essential background information。 However, these sections are also well-handled and give insights into Dora's personal history that is quite moving。It would be highly unusual if there weren't plenty of twists and turns in a novel by Adele Parks and so it will come as no surprise that "One Last Secret" has its fair share of them too。 Some require disbelief to be suspended a touch, but on the whole the author stays within the boundaries of acceptable fictional parameters。 Adele Parks also has a way of almost casually dropping unexpected developments into the narrative - almost like an aside - but it is a mechanic that works wonderfully well and has tremendous impact。If you have read and enjoyed Adele Parks' work previously, then I have little doubt that you will be more than satisfied with her efforts this time around too。Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for supplying an ARC in return for an honest review。 。。。more

If you have ever read an Adele Parks book, you know that her plots are never as straight forward as they may seem。 Once Last Secret is a compelling read, with so many twists and turns you will not know if you are coming or going! I always found it interesting why women chose to be an escort and this novel really gave some good insights on the history behind the person and the clientele。 The writing was tantalizing and I really liked the main character Dora as she seemed genuine and loveable even though she had a rough life。 One last secret is a stunning, pensive and pulse quickening summer read。 Thank you NetGalley / HQ for providing me with this arc in exchange for an honest review。

This novel goes off to a flying start with an opening that compels the reader to continue reading。 The direct address is like having a conversation with the protagonist, Dora, an 'escort' or as she puts it a 'sex worker'。 The plot is a good one, though you have to get through some cliches first - like Dora having a BFF called Evan who asks her to marry him, and it's all lovely and there's a ring and he loves her etc。 But it's when Dora takes one last gig for a regular client (again, in a rather This novel goes off to a flying start with an opening that compels the reader to continue reading。 The direct address is like having a conversation with the protagonist, Dora, an 'escort' or as she puts it a 'sex worker'。 The plot is a good one, though you have to get through some cliches first - like Dora having a BFF called Evan who asks her to marry him, and it's all lovely and there's a ring and he loves her etc。 But it's when Dora takes one last gig for a regular client (again, in a rather cliched setting of a beautiful chateau with guffawing upper-middle class couples celebrating a massive promotion for one of them) that things start to get weird。 And I mean 'weird'。 Dora is told she's done or said things and people she can't remember doing, she often loses track of time, she thinks she sees someone who has abused her, and she's constantly told she's not thinking straight。 I loved that bit。 In fact, it was that bit that I thought was highly readable and made the novel captivating。 Although right from the off, as a reader, you can guess that final foray into escorting isn't going to go well, the writing style is adept and entertaining。 My thanks to Netgalley for the ARC。 。。。more

I have had read quite a few Adele Parks books now and have to say this is probably one of my favourites if not the favourite。 One thing I would say is that when I first started reading I was so confused as it’s not like any other Adele Parks book I have read。 I had to double check who the author was! The first character you meet is an escort which completely threw me! I felt really bad for Dora at that point and hope she did find Dottie again! Overall I really enjoyed this one and will definitely keep adding Adele’s books to my TBR pile! 。。。more

Having been a fan of this author my entire adult life, I totally expected to be thrilled and shocked with this。 However, it devastates me to say that it just didn't hit the mark for me。 An incredibly punchy first few sentences got my attention, but the rest felt jumpy between back story and present, it didn't quite feel complete, I wasn't overly invested in the characters either。 Sex work seems to be quite a prominent feature in a lot of books at the moment, and this one didn't seem believable。 Having been a fan of this author my entire adult life, I totally expected to be thrilled and shocked with this。 However, it devastates me to say that it just didn't hit the mark for me。 An incredibly punchy first few sentences got my attention, but the rest felt jumpy between back story and present, it didn't quite feel complete, I wasn't overly invested in the characters either。 Sex work seems to be quite a prominent feature in a lot of books at the moment, and this one didn't seem believable。 Queen of the twists usually, I waited for that big gasp moment, but it never came。Readable, but didn't captivate me like usual。 。。。more

Adele Parks is one of those authors who always delivers - some books are better than others, of course, but every novel is enjoyable and this one is such a success。Here we have Dora, who is a high-class sex worker。 I love two things about Parks' writing here - firstly, there is no sense of this being a glamorous world, we learn pretty quickly how horrific life can be for sex workers, even those who would be described as 'high class'。 Secondly, I love how Parks has Dora tell the story。 Dora speak Adele Parks is one of those authors who always delivers - some books are better than others, of course, but every novel is enjoyable and this one is such a success。Here we have Dora, who is a high-class sex worker。 I love two things about Parks' writing here - firstly, there is no sense of this being a glamorous world, we learn pretty quickly how horrific life can be for sex workers, even those who would be described as 'high class'。 Secondly, I love how Parks has Dora tell the story。 Dora speaks directly to the reader, often with sarcasm, off the cuff remarks and a brutal honesty which makes her such a likeable character。I won't dwell too much on the actual story as to tell it in any greater detail than the synopsis may give away some spoilers。 Suffice to say, that if you like Parks already, this will be another winner for you。 If you've never read her before, what are you waiting for? Thanks to Netgalley and HQ for an ARC in exchange for an honest review 。。。more

After reading a few of Adele Parks books I was looking forward to reading this latest title from her, due for release in July。 ‘One Last Secret’ introduces us to Dora and leads us straight into a world of power, sex, money and revenge。 As an escort Dora has seen and experienced more than her fair share of the world, most of it unfortunately more on the seedy side of life but it has allowed her to independently pay her way。 When she finally falls in love and is guaranteed a world of safety it is After reading a few of Adele Parks books I was looking forward to reading this latest title from her, due for release in July。 ‘One Last Secret’ introduces us to Dora and leads us straight into a world of power, sex, money and revenge。 As an escort Dora has seen and experienced more than her fair share of the world, most of it unfortunately more on the seedy side of life but it has allowed her to independently pay her way。 When she finally falls in love and is guaranteed a world of safety it is an easy decision to give up this part of her life for a chance of happiness。 But then the offer of one last job comes in, one that won’t come with any ties, just needed to make someone jealous, easy money so what could go wrong? Things suddenly take a dark turn and Dora becomes very aware her life could be in danger…I love Adele Parks style of writing and this latest title is no exception, you are drawn in to each chapter and the story unfolds seamlessly before you。 It was very interesting to learn from the ‘other side’ of the escort world, one that is probably just built mainly on assumptions for most and to realise the reasons why these roles exist, not necessarily by choice but by necessity。 I had half guessed certain elements of the twist but you are kept in suspense until the end (although I felt it dragged a little in the middle part with some long winded sections as times that went a bit off track unnecessarily) but I thought the final twist was a good ending, leaving the story a little unfinished in a ways but that ultimately could have changed the pattern of events so much if known。 Very cleverly portrayed。 Another definite read from Adele and would recommend to be added to your to-be-read list。 。。。more
