Summary

From the Sunday Times bestselling author of Daisy Jones & The Six。

A lifetime holding it together。
One party will bring it crashing down。

Malibu: August, 1983。 It's the day of Nina Riva's annual end-of-summer party, and anticipation is at a fever pitch。 Everyone wants to be around the famous Rivas: Nina, the talented surfer and supermodel; brothers Jay and Hud, one a championship surfer, the other a renowned photographer; and their adored baby sister, Kit。 Together, the siblings are a source of fascination in Malibu and the world over-especially as the offspring of the legendary singer, Mick Riva。

By midnight the party will be completely out of control。
By morning, the Riva mansion will have gone up in flames。

But before that first spark in the early hours before dawn, the alcohol will flow, the music will play, and the loves and secrets that shaped this family's generations will all come bubbling to the surface。

Malibu Rising is a story about one unforgettable night in the life of a family: the night they each have to choose what they will keep from the people who made them 。 。 。 and what they will leave behind。

I absolutely loved this book! I truly loved each of the Riva siblings, but I related to Nina so much and thought her journey was especially poignant。 This book was truly immersive as well。 I’m always so impressed by TJR’s ability to make you feel like you’re a part of the story。 The ending was much more emotional than I thought it’d be and I did tear up a bit。 I highly recommend this book, especially if you enjoyed TJR’s previous work!

Reading this book feels a bit like seeing a car crash。 You can’t look away because you want to make sure that everyone got out alright。 Captivating, exciting & couldn’t put it down。

Would give 4。5 stars but the 。5’s are not an option。I hope someone picks this book up as a limited series。 The themes of family, acceptance, growth, and love are amazing and would be perfect the television screen! The Riva siblings were my favorite。 Definitely a must read for all。

This book was so insanely good。 Not at all what I expected though。 Taylor Jenkins Reid is so good at making lovable characters and my heart really went out to the four Riva siblings and June and all that they went through。 I am so in love with this book!!!! 😭🥰😭

I really liked this book! It was a slow bur we at first for me but I got into it and couldn’t put the book down so that’s a good sign。 Not 5 stars due to the slow start but I enjoyed it nonetheless 🫶🏾 I related so much to Nina being the eldest and feeling like you have the responsibility of all your siblings’ emotions/future/present/everything!! we’ve both been adults for longer than our age and it was eye opening seeing how I feel actually written down。 Beautifully may I add!

The first part of the book was a lot of set-up and backstory。 I found it harder to get into because I had no idea where the story was going。 BUT I could not put the book down once I got to part 2! Celebrity, folklore, family dynamics…I loved it all! What a great story。

I really don't like books that focus on the Hollywood or showbiz lifestyle and especially don't care for books that focus on substance abuse, and there was plenty of both in this story。 But I loved reading about these characters growing up in Malibu and the Los Angeles area, because I did too。 Luckily my parents weren't anything like the Riva siblings' parents, but the author did a great job of evoking time and place and I was all in。 There wasn't anything especially surprising in the story for I really don't like books that focus on the Hollywood or showbiz lifestyle and especially don't care for books that focus on substance abuse, and there was plenty of both in this story。 But I loved reading about these characters growing up in Malibu and the Los Angeles area, because I did too。 Luckily my parents weren't anything like the Riva siblings' parents, but the author did a great job of evoking time and place and I was all in。 There wasn't anything especially surprising in the story for me - more frustration than anything else, with how predictably irresponsible and caddish the men were (except for Hud) and how submissive (yet strong, very strong) the main two female characters were。 Still, it was a very enjoyable read。 I'm listing it in my historical fiction list as it takes place beteween the 1950s and 80s。 。。。more

Loved this a lot。 Great summer book and as always the layers of her writing and storyline were great。 I love that there was a small character from one of her previous books featured in this story。 Love seeing this universe come together!!

4 1/2 stars。 Taylor Jenkins Reid stories shouldn’t work for me but they do。 I think its because I love other people’s drama。

This was so good and not what I expected at all!! Definitely thought it was going to be spoiled rich kids but it was surprisingly deep。 Nina was an amazing protagonist, she was so relatable and I was rooting for her so hard。 Loved the other siblings as well。 Usually I don’t like so many main characters but in this book it kept it interesting and I was hooked!! Also I need stand alone books to have a good/satisfying ending and this delivered。 The only thing that was kind of ehh was the random POV This was so good and not what I expected at all!! I did enjoy this book。 Gave me great visual imagery, but it felt like a teen novel; like a gossipy magazine。 Probably because it wasn’t a thriller (which is my go-to genre)。

This book is for the girlies who love to gossip

I think this is officially my favorite Taylor Jenkins Reid book, which is saying something because the other two were also spectacular。 I'm very partial to a good sibling story, especially one with multiple siblings, and so this one, revolving so strongly around these four brothers and sisters, really struck me for those relationships。 I loved how different she made each of them, and how she really allows those differences to shine, both in the flashbacks that show them as kids and in the presen I think this is officially my favorite Taylor Jenkins Reid book, which is saying something because the other two were also spectacular。 I'm very partial to a good sibling story, especially one with multiple siblings, and so this one, revolving so strongly around these four brothers and sisters, really struck me for those relationships。 I loved how different she made each of them, and how she really allows those differences to shine, both in the flashbacks that show them as kids and in the present day。 Also, the glitz and glamor of a Malibu celebrity party, taking on an uncontrollable, chaotic turn was ridiculously fun to read。 Not to mention, I'm a fan of the tiny easter eggs and crossovers。 Always a good time。 。。。more

I must admit, it took me a long time to get into this story (nearly halfway through tbh)。 But then once I got invested in the story and characters, I REALLY enjoyed it and ended up crying my eyes out at the ending。 A story about real life successes and massive failure (and the phoenixes born from the ashes)。 I dunno how come it took me so long to get because I loveee how it was written - back and forth between past and present and all different characters。 Loved the characters and all their mora I must admit, it took me a long time to get into this story (nearly halfway through tbh)。 But then once I got invested in the story and characters, I REALLY enjoyed it and ended up crying my eyes out at the ending。 A story about real life successes and massive failure (and the phoenixes born from the ashes)。 I dunno how come it took me so long to get because I loveee how it was written - back and forth between past and present and all different characters。 Loved the characters and all their moral grey areas。 And LOVED the ending。 Sad in some ways, triumphant in others - as all endings should be。 So glad I didn’t DNF! 。。。more

This is one of the latest by Ms。 Reid to explore the consequences of fame。 It takes place in the same universe as Daisy Jones and the Six and Evelyn Hugo。I loved it。 The really compelling story line was told through flashbacks, which eventually caught up to the present story just in time to delve into the effects of those past mistakes and trauma。 I never thought I'd relate to a model, nor to a dudebro that epitomizes surfer-dude-ness。Towards the end are a lot of vignettes that take place during This is one of the latest by Ms。 Reid to explore the consequences of fame。 It takes place in the same universe as Daisy Jones and the Six and Evelyn Hugo。I loved it。 The really compelling story line was told through flashbacks, which eventually caught up to the present story just in time to delve into the effects of those past mistakes and trauma。 I never thought I'd relate to a model, nor to a dudebro that epitomizes surfer-dude-ness。Towards the end are a lot of vignettes that take place during the famous Riva summer bash。 I didn't enjoy them at first, mostly because I couldn't keep track of the names。 Yet the scattered anecdotes created a great mosaic of what really happens at one of these high profile and insane parties。 Ms。 Reid humanized all her characters and makes even the guy swinging from the chandelier seem three dimensional。I'll probably be re-reading Daisy Jones, Evelyn Hugo, and this one again。 。。。more
