Summary

Low self-esteem can make life difficult in all sorts of ways。 It can make you anxious and unhappy, tormented by doubts and self-critical thoughts。 It can get in the way of feeling at ease with other people and stop you from leading the life you want to lead。 It makes it hard to value and appreciate yourself in the same way you would another person you care about。

Melanie Fennell's acclaimed and best-selling self-help guide will help you to understand your low self-esteem and break out of the vicious circle of distress, unhelpful behaviour and self-destructive thinking。 Using practical techniques from cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), this book will help you learn the art of self-acceptance and so transform your sense of yourself for the better。 Specifically, you will learn:

How low self-esteem develops and what keeps it going
How to question your negative thoughts and the attitudes that underlie them
How to identify your strengths and good qualities for a more balanced, kindly view of yourself
Overcoming self-help guides use clinically proven techniques to treat long-standing and disabling conditions, both psychological and physical。

Not the most exciting book to read but contains a lot of valuable information for when you need a reminder to be kind to yourself。 It was rather reassuring to read this book and recognise that I put quite a lot of its advice into practice nowadays!

I think that’s a book which is needed to read many times…Well, it’s worth to try…

People are often looking for miracles when it comes to self-help or psychology books。 They want a thunderous "ah-HA" moment that will revolutionize their lives。 This book doesn't offer that, but it offers clarity and insight on why people develop low self-esteem, how it works and how you can win the war against your brain。 British psychologist Melanie Fennell puts it in the simplest possible terms。 You've developed a "bottom line"。 Some type of belief about yourself that makes you miserable and People are often looking for miracles when it comes to self-help or psychology books。 They want a thunderous "ah-HA" moment that will revolutionize their lives。 This book doesn't offer that, but it offers clarity and insight on why people develop low self-esteem, how it works and how you can win the war against your brain。 British psychologist Melanie Fennell puts it in the simplest possible terms。 You've developed a "bottom line"。 Some type of belief about yourself that makes you miserable and life rules, which are designed to work around that belief。 If you feel incompetent, you're going to make a point of nailing every possible project you're working on and if you don't, you're going to feel like shit。 If you feel unlovable, you're going to go out of your way to get people to love you and each rejection will hurt like shit。 This abusive dynamic is at the core of your low self-esteem and Melanie Fennell developed a system in order to uproot it from your life。I listened to an audiobook of this and I won't like, it made me drift to my own crap several times over, which is a good sign。 I had to stop and put Fennell's ideas into perspective and really gained a better understanding of why I suck at liking myself。 It's a book for those who want to do the work。 Not for those who want it gift wrapped to them。 。。。more

It takes a lot of work to make this book useful for you。 I loved it’s structured approach, real instruments - worksheets which are filled with tasks and questions。 You can’t just slip it through and wait for some changes。 This book is as good as you make it for you - I was 50/50 invested in tasks, for some of them I took notes, filled worksheets, but I didn’t do it daily。 For me it wasn’t life changer, but guide of tools I can use occasionally。

Definitely wont expect my self esteem to be boosted immediately after or just by reading a book。 It does, however, provide really useful principles, examples and exercises that prompt you to challenge your thoughts。 It also mentioned how things don't always work, how sometimes you can hardly find any explanation for your thoughts or events in your life and emphasized how you should keep going; as something like low self-esteem that has been there for long time in your life wont disappear easily。 Definitely wont expect my self esteem to be boosted immediately after or just by reading a book。 It does, however, provide really useful principles, examples and exercises that prompt you to challenge your thoughts。 It also mentioned how things don't always work, how sometimes you can hardly find any explanation for your thoughts or events in your life and emphasized how you should keep going; as something like low self-esteem that has been there for long time in your life wont disappear easily。But to get the benefit of all this, it needs motivation and persistence; continuing to apply the principles and not stopping when faced with disappointments。 。。。more

I find that rationalizing my feelings do not help。 I even think it can do more harm than good。 After a while, you start neglecting your "unhelpful" thoughts and feelings, which leads to not acknowledging them and not dealing with them。 That's why CBT only works at first。 Still, this book is not that bad in helping you reflect on your thinking patterns about yourself。 I find that rationalizing my feelings do not help。 I even think it can do more harm than good。 After a while, you start neglecting your "unhelpful" thoughts and feelings, which leads to not acknowledging them and not dealing with them。 That's why CBT only works at first。 Still, this book is not that bad in helping you reflect on your thinking patterns about yourself。 。。。more

This is a very informative and helpful book, it has influenced the way I perceive myself。 However, I expected more from this book。 It's somewhat difficult to read, the structure is confusing, there's a lot of repetitive parts。 The subject is great, but the execution needs clarity。 This is a very informative and helpful book, it has influenced the way I perceive myself。 However, I expected more from this book。 It's somewhat difficult to read, the structure is confusing, there's a lot of repetitive parts。 The subject is great, but the execution needs clarity。 。。。more

InvaluableThis book takes you closely and sensitively through the possible reasons for your low self-esteem, and gives practical ideas and advice for how to address thought patterns & behaviours, enabling you to be free from misconceptions & barriers to discovering your true worth。 With exercises to work through at your own pace, I can honestly say this book has changed my life!

Some of the exercises can be quite repetitive but overall I found it helpful in how I deal with social anxiety and feelings of low self-esteem。

Very informative with some great examples and techniques for boosting self esteem。I think this book works best when read/used along side other mental health books as usually low self esteem stems from somewhere and often goes along side mental illness。

The bad: nothing in particular。The good: a practical and helpful CBT-based guide for overcoming low-self esteem。 It covers the basics from a CBT perspective, from belief transformation to examining your rules for living and your predictions about what will happen, going down into your core identity traits and reshaping those beliefs。 Solid and informative manual。

Really excellent。 It goes hand in hand with CBT so more of a guiding hand than a definitive magic-make-it-all-better but definitely makes you think differently。

Mel

It’s a bit repetitive, and if you’re already familiar with CBT then you might not find a lot that’s new here。 That said, the guiding questions in each exercise were helpful and thought-provoking。 I also appreciated the characters used throughout the book to provide specific examples for each exercise/point; they also helped me see the far harsher standards I held myself to vs others。
