Summary

If you could go back, who would you want to meet?

In a small back alley of Tokyo, there is a café that has been serving carefully brewed coffee for more than one hundred years。 Local legend says that this shop offers something else besides coffee—the chance to travel back in time。

Over the course of one summer, four customers visit the café in the hopes of making that journey。 But time travel isn’t so simple, and there are rules that must be followed。 Most important, the trip can last only as long as it takes for the coffee to get cold。

Heartwarming, wistful, mysterious and delightfully quirky, Toshikazu Kawaguchi’s internationally bestselling novel explores the age-old question: What would you change if you could travel back in time?

This book is weird。 If this is scifi, it fails because there's no science。 If this is fantasy, there are too many random rules and no magic。 Is this magical realism? Which seems easier? Which seems most logical? Which seems like the most likely decision for an intelligent, educated, multilingal, adult, working woman? The language is very stilted which is perhaps down to the translation。 The author makes strange choices like giving a detailed explanation of Alzheimer's disease - as if people don't already know about it。 The author repeatedly and unnecessarily summarizes things that came earlier (but quite recently) in the novel。The repetition, unnecessary explanations and unbelievable, uninteresting story make this book tedious and very boring。 The conclusion's sermonizing and flat out telling me what I'm supposed to be thinking and feeling about this story is off-putting condescending to the reader。 This is basically a cut rate Hallmark movie。 。。。more

This book had sooo much potential, but sadly it didn’t live up to my expectations。 The people in this book can travel back in time, but the reality won’t change。 Eventhough this rule sucks, I’d give anything to see and hug my grandpa once more。

Една од оние книги кои не можеш да престанеш да ги читаш。Јапонскиот магиски реализам е нешто што ретко може да биде досадно。

This book is just wonderful。two of my favourite quotes: "at the end of the day, whether one returns to the past or travels to the future, the present doesn't change。""coffee on a sail boat tastes like sunrise。" This book is just wonderful。two of my favourite quotes: "at the end of the day, whether one returns to the past or travels to the future, the present doesn't change。""coffee on a sail boat tastes like sunrise。" 。。。more

Not really my cup of coffee :( I found this book a bit repetitive and I don’t think the translation did it justice? I’ve found that with all the Japanese literature that I’ve read recently that it seems to read a bit simplistically and I don’t know if that’s just the style of the authors of a fault of translation?

Pleasant, uncomplicated story。 I loved the atmosphere of the characters and the cafe。 Definitely felt transported there。 I loved how the author had thought of every possible scenario and question regarding time travel。 Will definitely recommend it as a nice summer read。

This book made me emotional after I finished and reflected on it。 Each story was beautiful and sad buy still left room for hope and love

Heel interessant concept, sommige dingen konden wat beter uitgewerkt zijn; maar over het algemeen wel gewoon een erg mooi boek。

So many rules, I can see why there aren't queues of people waiting to go back in time at the cafe! The flow was a bit difficult for me, maybe because of the translation。 The first 3 stories were ok but the last was the best and made it all worthwhile。 So many rules, I can see why there aren't queues of people waiting to go back in time at the cafe! The flow was a bit difficult for me, maybe because of the translation。 The first 3 stories were ok but the last was the best and made it all worthwhile。 。。。more

(5。8/10) - ⭐⭐⭐Content warnings can be found hereThis month just doesn't seem to be my month, since here we have yet another book in which the writing style just really did not work for me。It's a shame, because the premise had me very excited。 I love the idea of a hole in the wall cafe that offers 'pointless' time travel, and I think the concept worked well with the parameters set forth in this novel。 And yet, the way this story was told dimmed my excitement almost immediately。I found this way to (5。8/10) - ⭐⭐⭐Content warnings can be found hereThis month just doesn't seem to be my month, since here we have yet another book in which the writing style just really did not work for me。It's a shame, because the premise had me very excited。 I love the idea of a hole in the wall cafe that offers 'pointless' time travel, and I think the concept worked well with the parameters set forth in this novel。 And yet, the way this story was told dimmed my excitement almost immediately。I found this way too repetitive, and part of me wonders if it served some sort of purpose that went right over my head, or if something got lost in translation somehow。 To me, there was so much pointless repetition in the language used to describe everything from the cafe, to the time travel, and finally the characters that it started to actively annoy me very early on, and the aspects of the story that did move me got very lost in this sauce。In the end, it only just scraped together three stars, and I can't say I feel any need to pick up anything else in this series。 。。。more

I could only make it through the first story and the rating for that story alone。 Not a fan of the writing, perhaps it's the translation, but it feels odd and monotonic。 I could only make it through the first story and the rating for that story alone。 Not a fan of the writing, perhaps it's the translation, but it feels odd and monotonic。 。。。more

Janji gak nangis? I have no words to say。。 this is kinda heartwarming yet emotional book with slow paced and simply written about the characters and scene。 I love the way all characters are interconnected with that place, in their own story。

I wish I could remember why I reserved this book from the library。 I did not enjoy it。 However, I recognize that there is a chance that my struggles with it are less to do with the quality of the story, and more to do with my own rigid thinking around both writing style and my internalized cultural biases:1。 I suspect that this book has been translated from Japanese to English, which may contribute to bumpy narrative voice。 2。 The characters in this story all have traditional Japanese names。 As I wish I could remember why I reserved this book from the library。 I did not enjoy it。 However, I recognize that there is a chance that my struggles with it are less to do with the quality of the story, and more to do with my own rigid thinking around both writing style and my internalized cultural biases:1。 I suspect that this book has been translated from Japanese to English, which may contribute to bumpy narrative voice。 2。 The characters in this story all have traditional Japanese names。 As I’m am not used to such names, I had a very challenging time keeping track of who was who。 I made a cheat sheet on my bookmark。 Lol。 The story line was cute。 A coffee shop that has the power to allow customers to go back in time。 With rules, of course。 。。。more

Everyone has their own opinion on a book。 And there are people who does not like how this book was written。 But in my opinion, i love this book, i dont think the way it was written bothers me。 I love the settings, the story was set in Tokyo, and it is one of the reason i started to read this book。 The plot were amazing as well, i cried in every chapter。 Idk if i am too sensitive or it is really really that sad, but at the same time i enjoyed reading it。 This book gave me a feeling/experience of Everyone has their own opinion on a book。 And there are people who does not like how this book was written。 But in my opinion, i love this book, i dont think the way it was written bothers me。 I love the settings, the story was set in Tokyo, and it is one of the reason i started to read this book。 The plot were amazing as well, i cried in every chapter。 Idk if i am too sensitive or it is really really that sad, but at the same time i enjoyed reading it。 This book gave me a feeling/experience of "we can and we cant" idk how to describe it。 Not everyone gonna like this book and not everyone gonna dislike this book。 。。。more

This book fell short for me。 Overall the premise is interesting but the writing didn’t work。 It was so repetitive。 The characters weren’t very likeable and made some very questionable choices。

It was such a calm but thought-provoking read and reminded me again that “Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards”。I just wished that the translation could be better to do justice。
