Summary

VOLUME ONE IN THE TRILOGY OF FIVE

An international phenomenon and pop-culture classic, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy has been a radio show, TV series, novel, stage play, comic book and film。 Following the galactic (mis)adventures of Arthur Dent, Hitchhiker’s in its various incarnations has captured the imaginations of curious minds around the world 。 。 。

It’s an ordinary Thursday lunchtime for Arthur Dent until his house gets demolished。 The Earth follows shortly afterwards, to make way for a new hyperspace bypass, and his best friend has just announced that he’s an alien。 At this moment, they’re hurtling through space with nothing but their towels and an innocuous-looking book inscribed with the big, friendly words: DON’T PANIC。

The weekend has only just begun 。 。 。

As a person who usually doesn't read sci-fi, this book has opened my eyes to a new world (or galaxy)。 I really loved Adams writing and all the little sidetracks that the story took。 Some of them came back later in the book but most didn't—something I really loved。 I also loved the characters and how real they were portrayed。 I highly recommend this book to everyone。 As a person who usually doesn't read sci-fi, this book has opened my eyes to a new world (or galaxy)。 I really loved Adams writing and all the little sidetracks that the story took。 Some of them came back later in the book but most didn't—something I really loved。 I also loved the characters and how real they were portrayed。 I highly recommend this book to everyone。 。。。more

I’m surprised that I didn’t like this book。 But I really didn’t like this book lol。 It was gonna be a 1 star, but the humor at times made me bump it up to 2 stars。 I really didn’t understand what was going on half the time and I couldn’t bring myself to finish the last 25% of it, but I soldiered on and did it。

Loved the movie when I watched it last year, and though the source material is very similar it just didn’t hit me in the same way。 Still really enjoyable and I’d like to continue the story!

This is, hands down, one of my all-time favorite books。 If you're a fan of dry humor and sarcasm, this is right up your alley。 This is, hands down, one of my all-time favorite books。 If you're a fan of dry humor and sarcasm, this is right up your alley。 。。。more

These series are not nearly as funny and engrossing as most people make them out to be。 Other than a few isolated, okay-ish jokes, these books had nothing good to offer。 I had a hard time finishing them and I definitely don't recommend them。 These series are not nearly as funny and engrossing as most people make them out to be。 Other than a few isolated, okay-ish jokes, these books had nothing good to offer。 I had a hard time finishing them and I definitely don't recommend them。 。。。more

In the beginning the Universe was created。 This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move。 But Don't Panic! I really enjoyed this book。 It isn’t often that I read a book and laugh out loud。 I was pleasantly surprised。 I thought I would hate it。 I would definitely recommend this read。

As a fan of the original radio shows, it was nice to be able to associate the characters from the book with the actors that played them for the BBC hit production。 However, the story is mostly identical to the one from the first season of the radio show, so my suggestion to anyone interested in the universe created by Douglas Adams would be to start with those。 Think of it as an audiobook from almost 50 years ago :)

A great addition to the variations in which you can consume this story。 I especially liked the illustrations created with what was considered new technology at the time。 They definitely have the feel of movie stills。 It and the rest of the books remain one of my favorites。 If you haven't read or listened to this series, you need to grab your towel and go for one of the funnier rides you have ever been on。 If you are more inclined towards moving pictures, see if you can find the TV show and don't A great addition to the variations in which you can consume this story。 I especially liked the illustrations created with what was considered new technology at the time。 They definitely have the feel of movie stills。 It and the rest of the books remain one of my favorites。 If you haven't read or listened to this series, you need to grab your towel and go for one of the funnier rides you have ever been on。 If you are more inclined towards moving pictures, see if you can find the TV show and don't waste your time on the movie unless you're a completist。 。。。more

Just finished reading it and was quite confused in the end as to what "42" meant as an answer to the question of everything, I realized the humor of it, but then again thought that the book implied the answer to everything was the question itself。 The drive to seek answers to questions is ultimately the answer to everything。 Bit of a freaky loop, I know, but that's how I interpreted it。 “The History of every major Galactic Civilization tends to pass through three distinct and recognizable phases Just finished reading it and was quite confused in the end as to what "42" meant as an answer to the question of everything, I realized the humor of it, but then again thought that the book implied the answer to everything was the question itself。 The drive to seek answers to questions is ultimately the answer to everything。 Bit of a freaky loop, I know, but that's how I interpreted it。 “The History of every major Galactic Civilization tends to pass through three distinct and recognizable phases, those of Survival, Inquiry, and Sophistication, otherwise known as the How, Why, and Where phases。" Absolutely mind-boggling, a humorous read。 。。。more

This is a classic that I've read multiple times before, but now I listened to the audio version as narrated by Stephen Fry。 I've had trouble reading this book in the past because of how frustrated I would become at trying to pronounce a lot of the wild words that Adams uses。 I eventually moved past that and was able to enjoy The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy for the wonderful story that it is。 Considering part of the story's origins are wrapped up in radio, I always wanted to give the audiobo This is a classic that I've read multiple times before, but now I listened to the audio version as narrated by Stephen Fry。 I've had trouble reading this book in the past because of how frustrated I would become at trying to pronounce a lot of the wild words that Adams uses。 I eventually moved past that and was able to enjoy The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy for the wonderful story that it is。 Considering part of the story's origins are wrapped up in radio, I always wanted to give the audiobook a try and when I found out that Stephen Fry narrates it, that clinched it for me。 What can I really say about this sci-fi work of comedic genius that hasn't already been said? Nothing, probably。 So, I won't spend a lot of time on this review。 Even at the normal reading speed, this audiobook is only around the 5-hour mark which is still faster than I could finish on my own。 It doesn't surprise me that Stephen Fry put on a wonderful performance。 His pronunciation of some of the wilder words felt perfectly natural。 If there are any outtakes of him flubbing a few of them (how could there not be?), I'd love to hear them。Although I've read this multiple times, I've never read any of the other books so The Restaurant at the End of the Universe will come next。 I have the audiobook for that one and have listened to a little bit of it just to see how I like the new narrator。 He's no Stephen Fry but he's not bad。 I'll probably jump between reading and listening to that one。 。。。more

Expressways, dolphins, 42, ACAB。 Stellar out of this world book that actually made me laugh out loud。 Fun and so easy to read。 I am EAGER to get my hands on the rest of the series。

4。5/5 starsI rarely find books that make me laugh, but this book was certainly one of those。 It's charm, cleverness, adbsurdity and subtle British humour is what got to me。 4。5/5 starsI rarely find books that make me laugh, but this book was certainly one of those。 It's charm, cleverness, adbsurdity and subtle British humour is what got to me。 。。。more

I can’t believe it took me so long to give this book a try。 The satirical and witty look at society and the meaning of life had me literally laughing out loud at points。 I’ve missed humor in books, and it reminded me that sometimes, humor is a wonderful way to cope with the questions of our own pitiful existence。

If Absurdism was a book。 Very unlike anything I’ve ever read, and that’s why it stands out。 Only gripe is the ending, but it’s a minor gripe, as it’s worth the ride。

This book was entertaining, but the story itself was not as interesting as I had hoped that it would be。 I loved all of the little details and random facts about this made up universe, but I didn't necessarily love all of the technical stuff。 But overall, it was an entertaining audiobook to listen to during my long drive。 This book was entertaining, but the story itself was not as interesting as I had hoped that it would be。 I loved all of the little details and random facts about this made up universe, but I didn't necessarily love all of the technical stuff。 But overall, it was an entertaining audiobook to listen to during my long drive。 。。。more
