Summary

The second cycle of the internationally bestselling Skulduggery Pleasant series comes to a thrilling end。 You are not ready…

The Faceless Ones have returned to our universe。 The bad guys have won。

With the end of everything just days away – and no longer able to rely on Valkyrie Cain – Skulduggery must make allies of enemies if he's going to stand any chance of saving what's left of the world。 And just when things are looking their bleakest, they manage to get even worse, with Omen Darkly suddenly having to step up when his brother, the Chosen One, falls。

There's a lot going on。 Most of it is bad。 Sorry about that。

Ugh I couldn't tell you why I read this。 I didn't get to the end of the previous one, and there was lots of stuff (Obsidian, the Child and the Mother, trapped Malice) that I just had to take as given。 I wish I could say this was as mind bending and spectacular as the Dying of the Light but it really wasn't- countless side tracks and pointless deviations and six different villains, none of them dealt with convincingly。 Catastrophic, world ending events that just didn't seem to have any impact or Ugh I couldn't tell you why I read this。 I didn't get to the end of the previous one, and there was lots of stuff (Obsidian, the Child and the Mother, trapped Malice) that I just had to take as given。 I wish I could say this was as mind bending and spectacular as the Dying of the Light but it really wasn't- countless side tracks and pointless deviations and six different villains, none of them dealt with convincingly。 Catastrophic, world ending events that just didn't seem to have any impact or anyone react proportionally to- when the Faceless Ones return you don't roll with the punches and keep quipping throughout your day。 I was very ready to leave this series behind but then Landy had to include that final line and I'm afraid I'm here for the ride 🙄 。。。more

Okay, Derek's great at writing last books。 I had the goofiest smile finishing this。 I don't by any means think it's my new fave Skulduggery book like I did with 9, but I think it might be my fave of this series。 It was so exciting! So many twists! I absolutely loved this book。 There were some editing mistakes made, but I can overlook those given my overall enjoyment of this book!

My partner finished this before I did, and told me it was his favourite and the best one in the series。 And honestly, he might be right。 Whilst I’ll always have a soft spot for the first book, this was such a brilliant read right the way through。 There was never a point where I felt bored or disinterested。 And oh my god, the amount of big reveals throughout this was amazing。 Everything has been thought out so well。 Even the ending itself has made me giddy and wanting for more。 Derek has delivere My partner finished this before I did, and told me it was his favourite and the best one in the series。 And honestly, he might be right。 Whilst I’ll always have a soft spot for the first book, this was such a brilliant read right the way through。 There was never a point where I felt bored or disinterested。 And oh my god, the amount of big reveals throughout this was amazing。 Everything has been thought out so well。 Even the ending itself has made me giddy and wanting for more。 Derek has delivered an amazing read as per usual, but this one feels extra special。 。。。more

I keep asking myself did i enjoy reading this and I honestly do not know。。。 Okay lets begin with the number of perspectives we see in this novel, one of them is this child Tyler following his experiences throughout the events of this book。 I can see in some sense why this perspective is included in the story since it gives context to the experiences of mortals during the turbulent events of the book, however, it felt so disconnected from the rest of the narrative that I think it could have just I keep asking myself did i enjoy reading this and I honestly do not know。。。 Okay lets begin with the number of perspectives we see in this novel, one of them is this child Tyler following his experiences throughout the events of this book。 I can see in some sense why this perspective is included in the story since it gives context to the experiences of mortals during the turbulent events of the book, however, it felt so disconnected from the rest of the narrative that I think it could have just served as a complete short story on its own since it only made this book feel discordant and bloated the page count unnecessarily。 As a short story on its own I think it worked well but I didn't enjoy how it was embedded in the main narrative。 The martin flannery pov was literal hell for me, I hated reading it, I was completely uninterested in having him as a pov character, just a terrible time。 Also very interesting the level of focus on (view spoiler)[ reveals about how people are related (hide spoiler)], like theres so many of this kind。 Throughout this book we get a series of reveals that SHOULD be incredibly interesting and push characters to their limits but unfortunately many of these reveals involve the one, the only, my beloathed skullduggery pleasant and so of course other than a momentary gasp of shock, these reveals do absolutely NOTHING to the character, does not change him in any way, no moral dilemmas raised as a result。 The main issue is that we are never, not once allowed to see skullduggery in an emotionally vulnerable position despite us being allowed to see him in physically vulnerable situations (the many many many times he gets beat up and/or captured), i mean in the first cycle when faced with the ghosts/spirits of his dead family, this man barely hesitated, his friends die we hear about how no one tailored a suit like ghastly for a couple of books, maybe a minute of grief for saracen then radio silence。 The most egregious example of this in this book for me was (view spoiler)[ finding out Solace was his daughter and Vies was his grandson, like are we kidding? His whole backstory includes how the death of his wife and child led him into a spiral, we are given to understand how much family means to him AND WHEN HE FINDS OUT THAT ALL THIS TIME HE HAS CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN he just jumps right back into the action with barely a word, doesn't consider that he left his grandchild for dead all those years ago, doesn't turn to china with questions, doesn't need to be talked out of trying to help trigger the doomsday protocol to free the rest of his grandkids, seems to have no moral quandary with continuing to try to kill or capture Vies。 So what was the point? we never revisit this later in the narrative, he never has a conversation with Solace or Vies or even China, he doesn't even express his true thoughts about this with Valkyrie later! (hide spoiler)] We get no emotional payoff for this moment, what is the point of a dramatic reveal WITHOUT DRAMA。 Sometimes I wonder what the purpose of his character is, is he supposed to be a man who despite his own feelings and dilemmas always seeks to get the job done, to save lives no matter what the personal cost? However, for such a character to work, there needs to be PERSONAL COST, it never at any point in the FIFTEEN BOOKS we spend with skullduggery do we step on anything that seems to require personal cost。 The most he has reacted to any situation is when it is revealed that China helped to capture his family in the past, THAT was a reveal that landed, that had impact, that had DRAMA and the man didn't even say a word! It was clear how shaken he was by this moment (ngl i called it that he and China had history from this moment in phase 1 because this guy is so unfazed by literally everything but when it came to china sorrows。。。 we finally get emotion, anyway chullduggery supremacy, everyone else go home!)To some extent all the characters are guilty of this too, but at least there is some attempt with the others to allow them to ruminate on what these changes mean for them, we catch up with dexter to see how he's coping after the loss of a friend and it seems to have had an impact, to have hurt。 With Valkyrie we see her struggle and change and be impacted by the memories of what shes done, we stick with her through her feelings of guilt, self hatred and doubt and how that changes the way she behaves。 With China we get to see her (view spoiler)[ admit her shortcomings to solace and express her regret (hide spoiler)] but Skullduggery is the absolute worst version of the authors tendency to ignore things that should have an impact on a character。 We have to perceive skullduggery as funny and cool and an impeccable detective and this comes at the cost of making him one of the most boring characters I have ever read, makes perfect sense why we never get his pov because it would be the dullest thing on earth! Unfortunately for me, he is given such a fruitful and interesting storylines attached to him, I honestly want to scream at how much it frustrates me because the potential that is lost here。。。 This is why Cadaver was so much more compelling to me, at least things impact him! Events have changed him and he isn't this stagnant character for whom everything is water of a ducks back。 At times things to do with the magic in this book became so convoluted and eyeroll inducing, Valkyrie is still has access to this nebulous power that can do whatever she needs in the moment she needs it, there's apparently no real rules to magic in this world and the one solid rule we did get previously is broken in this one (view spoiler)[ temper's gist taking over, but then later, he's fixed by darquesse bc god forbid any character has to abide by any magical restrictions! (hide spoiler)] and the whole situation with the return of (view spoiler)[ skullduggery's siblings (hide spoiler)] once again apparently this doesn't matter at all and had, yea you guessed it, no impact on skullduggery whatsoever! After the few scenes we see with them that relate to the Raze storyline, we don't see their characters again (with the exception of one that intersects with Omen's pov)。 There was also a lot of infodumping with regards to character backstories and worldbuilding for a final book in a series and while being interesting things to learn, were a lot to ingest for a final book when such arcs and storylines should be being wrapped up (dont get me started on the recap we get given from our antagonists at the end there, talk about a villain monologue)。 It was a mistake, in my opinion to introduce time travel into the magic and this series because it made everything in this book lack tension for me, I was just so convinced that everything would be changed by this element, seemingly a get out of jail free card for the main characters, something goes terribly wrong? just travel to the past and fix it。 This was confirmed for me with (view spoiler)[ the reveal of the faceless ones to the mortal world, this isn't something I felt would happen halfway through a final book in a series where the ramifications could not be fully grappled with。 In some ways I was right about the time travel being the get out of jail card but at least it was through sebastian and i think was fairly foreshadowed and set up well throughout phase 2。 (hide spoiler)]So few of the consequences of this book had any real permanence in this book, so I just didn't react to events in this book the way I did with the dying of the light, which i think did a better job as a final book in a series。Now some other things that were left semi unresoved or left in ways that I found too vague:- (view spoiler)[ now that abyssinia is back, where the fuck did she get to in the reboot? (hide spoiler)]- china and tanith fighting over the whole black sand thing- tanith being the leader of the black sand group which we never saw and was used as a momentary shock reveal (although thank god this was forgotten bc white saviour tanith is not a tanith i want to hear about EVER AGAIN。 Also I love her character but shes more of a rogue not a leader IMO)- we keep hearing about how certain sanctuaries are run by sycophants / corrupt leaders are the mages in those places never gonna get them replaced?- (view spoiler)[ where is creed? (hide spoiler)]- why is cadaver still here when the future that created him never existed - is solace still trying to kill china?-mevolent and serpahina in the infinity cage。。。 now that the sanctuary has changed hands again, are they gonna leave them there or pursue a more。。。 permanent solution。 - the refugees from dimension X that were facing discrimination from mages in roarhaven。。。 they doing okay? who knows! not us thats for sure。 - (view spoiler)[ okay so she rebooted the universe, did obsidian wipe himself from reality before that happened or is he just about somewhere? (hide spoiler)]- So are we never going to revisit the fact that it was implied that Omen is in love with Never? okay then- church of the faceless。。。 (view spoiler)[ are they gone for good? (hide spoiler)]- WHO is the child of the ancients!! We know they are out there somewhere!- so are the african sanctuaries no longer under attack? and if so wouldnt they be mad at the irish sanctuary for the meddling into their elections etc。。。。 (pls leave this one alone Mr landy this is the only one i appreciate being dropped)- did they ever build that bank that China gave the church of the faceless so many freedoms for。。。- WHAT DID SKULLDUGGERY TALK TO THE VIDDU DE ABOUT- abrogate raze is back in this dimension (view spoiler)[ and some of sp's siblings want to free him so。。。are we not worried about that? (hide spoiler)] - what did (view spoiler)[ skullduggery and his siblings talk about at the end of chapter 37? (hide spoiler)]- what did skullduggery say to (view spoiler)[ Quietus (hide spoiler)]- Who tf was (view spoiler)[ Nuncle and what was that here we are looking at the universe scene?? (hide spoiler)] To expand on the point about the refugees from dimension X living in roarhaven experiencing prejudice and the police brutality we see in roarhaven are examples of one of my least favourite things in urban fantasy。 Direct parallels to real world events but despite the fact that this is URBAN fantasy and these real world events ARE ALSO HAPPENING, no one mentions that despite the fact that its known that mages were used to being very integrated in mortal society and would be aware of these real world issues! Whats worse is they were discussed for small amounts of time but when other storylines begin to take precedence in the narrative, these discussions and parts of the story completely disappear。 We never hear about the dimension X refugees, whether any social change in roarhaven occurred and the police brutality element well (view spoiler)[ its implied that some of the main members of the guard that contributed to the police brutality are fired? but no criminal charges and no structural change take place (hide spoiler)]。 So truly what was the reason for this? If you are gonna include these elements into your story, at least make an effort in concluding them somehow!Lets discuss some of the things I enjoyed about this for a little positivity。 Omen MF Darkly, my actual son, KILLED IT in this book, what an amazing character arc, I genuinely think hes one of my favourite characters from this series alongside china sorrows but unlike china, i think his journey ends in a way thats very satisfactory and fitting。 The way he's grown so much from the boy we were introduced to in book 10, how assured he is in his self worth, how he stands up against even Valkyrie and Skullduggery the people he looks up to, when he thinks they're in the wrong, I just loved every minute of his storyline, how he and Augur managed to hold on to their brotherhood despite their upbringing, how even the feelings he had towards his parents were a little complicated, how he became a leader! The way his arch rivals storyline with jenan concludes I also think was so interesting and satisfying for me。 Side note, when he called skullduggery pathetic, I CHEERED。Now china sorrows, perhaps my favourite SP character of all of them gets paid dust by the ending of her storyline。 I do think her actions in this book make sense with the character we have been introduced to and have seen grow over the books but having her (view spoiler)[ become a PRINCIPAL (hide spoiler)] makes no sense whatsoever and no one can convince me otherwise, this is the woman who became SUPREME MAGE, schemed to take over the sanctuaries of both cradles of magic。 Is this ending meant to imply that China's power came mostly from the charm she used to use to enchant people to fall in love with her on sight and now that she sacrificed her 'youth and beauty' she will no longer be in places of power? if so BULL SHIT this is China MF Sorrows, we've been shown how cunning and shrewd she can be, I can understand her no longer wanting to wield power in a public light any more but no way she wouldn't have something else cooking! I always imagined she would be at her best when free to hunt down all the obscure magical texts and information that her heart desires, maybe rebuilding the institution she had in phase 1 but this ending makes no sense to me, and I'm insulted on her behalf。 MR LANDY ANSWER FOR YOUR CRIMES bc how HOW is this book called UNTIL THE END, WE ARE TOLD THIS IS THE FINAL BOOK, AND LOW AND BEHOLD I TURN THE PAGE TO FIND THAT THERE IS GONNA BE MORE? I honestly started to feel it coming at about the 80 percent mark when things just really weren't wrapping up and all the events in the final chapter were confirming my suspicions but I was not intending to read on at all because it seems clear to be that the next books are going to continue with more 'sorcerers try to kill/maim mortals and/or destroy mortal society' which is a storyline and motivation for the antagonists that has been beaten to death in this series plus after the mess that was phase 2 I'm starting to think this world is best left alone from now on (truly someone stop this man!!)。 Unfortunately for me, in that final page mr landy targeted by one weak spot, (view spoiler)[ the loml ghastly bespoke is back。。。 (hide spoiler)] so I will be reading the next book, lets hope China gets an interesting arc to help keep me going。 Additionally the hints we get about (view spoiler)[ the spark that contains the faceless ones being put somewhere。。。 yea bc thats never gonna come up again :/。 Its so frustrating that we are going to ONCE AGAIN, get someone (wonder who it will be this time。。。 creed again? ) trying to bring back the faceless ones AND a storyline of a group of mages trying to commit genocide against mortals, how droll。 I hope after this I never see hide nor hair of darquesse EVER AGAIN because then its just gonna be phase 2 the remix and her OP self would just make any antagonist look so toothless up against her。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

I really liked this book, it was definitely one of my favourites from Phase Two! I liked the call backs to old characters and plots and Omen stood out particularly in this book! I did think there was too many plot points, something that I found with a lot of the phase two books, causing the culmination to fall flat。 I wish he did what he did in phase one where everything was building up to one villain。 There was also some plot points that I’m still not sure how I feel about but I won’t say beca I really liked this book, it was definitely one of my favourites from Phase Two! Derek has shoehorned every single plot twist imaginable into the last 200 pages of this book alone, not to mention all the others through the series。 I threw this book across the room more than once, and promptly picked it back up to keep reading after releasing a slew of curses that would probably make my mother blush。 Did I hate this book with every fiber of my being? Absolutely。 Undoubtedly。 Irrevocably。 But did I also secretly love this book a little bit, and ugly cry upon reading the last words? Not that I’d admit to anyone。 (But yes。) I also make the above statements as a longtime and dedicated fan (I didn’t get Skulduggery himself tattooed on my body for nothing, y’all。) so don’t take anything I’ve said so far to mean that this book wasn’t spectacular in every way, and a perfect ending to the series as a whole。 Derek outdid himself yet again。 Thank you for fifteen years of ridiculous adventures, Mr。 Landy。 I hope to continue to read many more。 After all, I was told that Skulduggery Pleasant will return, and I can’t wait until he does。 。。。more

I have very mixed feelings about the wrapping up of phase two。 The first 50 pages of until the end were extremely tedious。 So much so, that I ended up reading less and less for a number of days。 The final instalment has all the action and characters that the previous instalments had。 There was a lot of nostalgic call backs throughout which I did enjoy。 But for me the same reservation’s resurfaces again。 Until the end marks the fifteenth entry of the main series (excluding entries like The Malefi I have very mixed feelings about the wrapping up of phase two。 The first 50 pages of until the end were extremely tedious。 So much so, that I ended up reading less and less for a number of days。 The final instalment has all the action and characters that the previous instalments had。 There was a lot of nostalgic call backs throughout which I did enjoy。 But for me the same reservation’s resurfaces again。 Until the end marks the fifteenth entry of the main series (excluding entries like The Maleficent seven。) The series should have ended with the ninth entry。 The first nine of the series were phenomenal and each entry added something new and excited。 Book nine gave the series a good ending and in my opinion the series should have been left there。 Phase two was quite misleading in my opinion。 Originally I thought Omen Darkly was going to be the main character with Skulduggery and Valkyrie playing very minor roles。 But that did not end up being the case。 For those who have read all the other works in the series。 I would still recommend them to read this one, until the end was still entertaining。 But none of the second phase were on par with phase one。 The last sentence in until the end, left a sour taste in my mouth and in my opinion ruins both phase one and phase two。 If the series is to continue, I doubt I will be back for the next instalment。 The Skulduggery series is running out of steam fast and it feels like they are only being made because sales are good。 When you think of shows like Dark and Breaking Bad。 They had a great run from beginning to end。 The showrunners for those shows were running out of ideas and they made the right decision to end the show on a high rather than continue only for the quality to diminish。 。。。more

2。5 stars, I think。 Had to let the dust settle before I posted any kind of review, and unfortunately I just really, really did not enjoy this ending。 TDOTL (Book 9) was such a fantastic finale, and truly the perfect place to end。 This felt rushed, over-explained, and under-delivered。 Some enjoyable moments! And the final sentence did make me gasp, at least。
