Frances pregnant now everyday she bathes in the red muddy Perdido River from her mothers urging。 Frances's husband Billy takes over control of the Caskey families personal wealth giving advice。 Sister falls down a flight of stairs， breaks her leg and becomes more demanding and annoying that her Mama ever was。 The Caskey family start to buy up all the swampland urged by Elinor。 Frances gives birth to twins， one normal and the other greenish-gray， two wide open filmsy eyes and two round black hole Frances pregnant now everyday she bathes in the red muddy Perdido River from her mothers urging。 Frances's husband Billy takes over control of the Caskey families personal wealth giving advice。 Sister falls down a flight of stairs， breaks her leg and becomes more demanding and annoying that her Mama ever was。 The Caskey family start to buy up all the swampland urged by Elinor。 Frances gives birth to twins， one normal and the other greenish-gray， two wide open filmsy eyes and two round black holes where a nose ought to be。 She puts it in the Perdido river and as she visits it undergoes a transformation in her own eyes watching her arms and legs become wide and webbed and a strong desire to consume alive and decayed fish and shellfish。 She swims with her baby everyday and neglects her other baby。 The longer Frances spends in the water the harder for her to transform back to normal。 With Elinor's permission they fake Frances's drowning so she can stay in the red muddy river forever。 The rain begins and looks like it is not going to stop。 The Caskey family drama continues to intrigue and fascinate and the familiar unfolding continues to be addictive。 。。。more

The Blackwater saga follows the Caskey family through the years。 It highlights their business journey， familial ties， and the mysteries that are Elinor Caskey and now Francis Caskey。 The Fortune is the next to last book in the series， where Miriam seeks out to make them even more rich， the elders settle into old age， and Francis becomes a mother。 This novel shows a real shift from childhood to adulthood in the Caskey sisters， with them taking on roles and responsibilities that previously would h The Blackwater saga follows the Caskey family through the years。 It highlights their business journey， familial ties， and the mysteries that are Elinor Caskey and now Francis Caskey。 The Fortune is the next to last book in the series， where Miriam seeks out to make them even more rich， the elders settle into old age， and Francis becomes a mother。 This novel shows a real shift from childhood to adulthood in the Caskey sisters， with them taking on roles and responsibilities that previously would have been left to the adults。 What repercussions do these shifts cause？This may be my favorite book so far in the Blackwater saga。 Reading through the changes the family are going through， and SO quickly， made me not want to put the book down。 Frances' pregnancy， birth， and then incessant visits to the Perdido river and the rift it caused between herself and her family （aside from her mom） makes me wonder if they're going to start ~figuring it out~。 The ending honestly was s o bittersweet and what makes me wonder if Oscar and/or Billy are going to attempt to figure out what is truly UP with the Caskey women。 I feel like this build up of tension was the perfect way to set the scene for the final book， and has me on the edge of my seat to see what's going to happen next。 。。。more

After the previous volume’s minor slackening in focus and narrative urgency， McDowell puts his foot back on the accelerator for the penultimate instalment。 Unexpected narrative developments pile up while some major players slip into complacency。 A couple of potential subplots are brought to a simmer。 One volume to go and absolutely anything could happen。

So far， my favorite of the Blackwater series; book 5 of 6。 We finally get to see more of the river creature and learn more about Elinor and Francis。 The ending of this novel is sad but not surprising。 The Caskey family as a whole is remarkable and I can't believe that there is or ever was such a family。 Although they have their disagreements， they are so close and so caring of one another。 The book brings us all the way to the mid 1950's and how the Caskey family's wealth has continued to grow。 So far， my favorite of the Blackwater series; book 5 of 6。 We finally get to see more of the river creature and learn more about Elinor and Francis。 The ending of this novel is sad but not surprising。 The Caskey family as a whole is remarkable and I can't believe that there is or ever was such a family。 Although they have their disagreements， they are so close and so caring of one another。 The book brings us all the way to the mid 1950's and how the Caskey family's wealth has continued to grow。 It ends with rain which is the title of the next book; which I hope to start and finish tomorrow。 。。。more

The Fortune sees the Caskeys increasing their fortune evermore， building the house of cards even higher。 Michael McDowell has given these characters so much good fortune， so much happiness， I must admit I am eagerly awaiting to see how it all goes to shit in the final volume of this saga。 Not saying I want bad fortune to befall these characters; I love them dearly， and I’ll miss them when all this is over， but my horror-loving heart loves when things go bad—something this book is unfortunately l The Fortune sees the Caskeys increasing their fortune evermore， building the house of cards even higher。 Michael McDowell has given these characters so much good fortune， so much happiness， I must admit I am eagerly awaiting to see how it all goes to shit in the final volume of this saga。 Not saying I want bad fortune to befall these characters; I love them dearly， and I’ll miss them when all this is over， but my horror-loving heart loves when things go bad—something this book is unfortunately lacking。 But you can’t help rooting for those Caskeys anyway！ Like The Levee， this volume feels like McDowell is building， building—and biding his time。 But I gave this five stars because McDowell’s writing shines， and his exploration of Perdido in the post-War years is fascinating。 The sense of time and place only improves with each volume， and by this time I’m totally involved， pretty much unwilling to leave。 Will I reread Blackwater？ You betcha。 I’m off to read Rain！ 。。。more
