Summary

In the realm of Awara, where gods, monsters, and humans exist side by side, Miuko is an ordinary girl resigned to a safe, if uneventful, existence as an innkeeper’s daughter。 But when Miuko is cursed and begins to transform into a demon with a deadly touch, she embarks on a quest to reverse the curse and return to her normal life。 Aided by a thieving magpie spirit and continuously thwarted by a demon prince, Miuko must outfox tricksters, escape demon hunters, and negotiate with feral gods if she wants to make it home again。 But with her transformation comes power and freedom she never even dreamed of, and she’ll have to decide if saving her soul is worth trying to cram herself back into an ordinary life that no longer fits her… and perhaps never did。

From New York Times bestselling author and National Book Award finalist, Traci Chee, comes a Japanese-influenced fantasy brimming with demons, adventure, and plans gone awry。

I was never bored。 Did I get anxious at some points yes? Did it feel like YA- no。 I don’t annotate but there was so much goodness, I wanted to highlight and write quotes。This was an adventure。 I enjoy her writing, characters and world building。 This was my 2nd Japanese fantasy book and I am here for it。

Honestly, this book was such an amazing adventure。 I’ll admit, that the pace of the first half did take me off guard, but when paired with the second half, it fell into place just so perfectly。 I have always been so fascinated with Asian culture, but have remarkably not delved very deep into Japanese culture。 In picking up this book, I feel like I have taken a good first step。 There was so much mythology and culture mixed into this book。 It was an adventure both for the plot and the society and Honestly, this book was such an amazing adventure。 I’ll admit, that the pace of the first half did take me off guard, but when paired with the second half, it fell into place just so perfectly。 I have always been so fascinated with Asian culture, but have remarkably not delved very deep into Japanese culture。 In picking up this book, I feel like I have taken a good first step。 There was so much mythology and culture mixed into this book。 It was an adventure both for the plot and the society and myths worked into it。 I would wholly recommend it to anyone who needs a good story and even better myths。 。。。more

The book struggles most in the pacing department; ultimately it's an incredible unrewarding slog with an astounding amount of messy plot and very nearly no character development whatsoever。 The book struggles most in the pacing department; ultimately it's an incredible unrewarding slog with an astounding amount of messy plot and very nearly no character development whatsoever。 。。。more

the found family aspect and the action itself being all ghibli-esque have turned this into one of my comfort reads。 not to mention the fact that this book is feminist, trans-positive, and has what i personally consider some of the best male-female friendship dynamics i've read recently; also, this might just be me, but the main character, miuko, definetly gives me katara vibes and her friend geiki is the embodiment of aang and toph。 with that being said, if you like ghibli movies, fairytails, sw the found family aspect and the action itself being all ghibli-esque have turned this into one of my comfort reads。 not to mention the fact that this book is feminist, trans-positive, and has what i personally consider some of the best male-female friendship dynamics i've read recently; also, this might just be me, but the main character, miuko, definetly gives me katara vibes and her friend geiki is the embodiment of aang and toph。 with that being said, if you like ghibli movies, fairytails, sweet friendships and don't mind a villain who at times can get a bit cartoony, yet is still disgusting i can't recommend this enough。 tw : attempted SA, SH, violence, sexism, misogyny, death。 。。。more

This reads much like the fairy tales I read as a child (the real Hans Christian Anderson and others, not the edited ones)。 I appreciated the Asian influences, as well as the gender struggles。 While she was cursed, the heroine was stronger than other women and able to perform tasks outside of "tradition。" This reads much like the fairy tales I read as a child (the real Hans Christian Anderson and others, not the edited ones)。 I appreciated the Asian influences, as well as the gender struggles。 While she was cursed, the heroine was stronger than other women and able to perform tasks outside of "tradition。" 。。。more

WOW。 crazy plot twists and weird time jumps but very well connected references。 VERY STRONG female lead and her male bff support! no forced romance between them but if ur like me and need some of it you can probably find it written between the lines。 wonderfully written, i could perfectly imagine all of the fight scenes and i also liked reading the footnotes at some of the pages explaining the words and customs of this world。 truly made me feel like i was inside of it。

Tutte i gli elementi forti più recenti degli YA (ragazze e mostri, mitologia, queerness) in un romanzo che si vede che davvero può funzionare come stand alone。 Molto carino e con una svolta a metà romanzo davvero gustosa。

DNF @ 43% I usually don't wait this long before DNF'ing a book, but I I've enjoyed everything else Traci Chee has written and was hoping this would eventually hook me。 Sadly, it never did。 Maybe I'm getting too picky with YA fantasy, but I just don't care enough about the world, plot nor characters to push through。 Gorgeous cover tho! I'm a sucker for mythology, anyway, so I'm always a sucker for stories that make an effort to include it。 I'd totally recommend this to someone looking for a fun, coming-of-age type adventure with demons and absolutely no romance。 It was fun, I liked it; and now I'm ready to go read something else lol。 。。。more

Dear Lord!! I thought this would never end。 I have never been more disappointed with a book more。 Maybe i have, but I'm too frustrated to remember right now!It started out so well。 It was cozy, and sad, and funny, and i loved her voice but then it got droonie (is that a word??) And it just fell apart。 I hated everyone but the magpie。 I hate you A Thousand Steps Into Night。 You made my horrible mood even worse。 Dear Lord!! I loved it。 Feminist and beautiful, it easily places as one of my favorite books。 Miuko is an amazing and livrable character。

I loved Geiki and how how funny he was and Miuko was such an amazing character to read about。 As the characters came in there were great representations of each of their personalities and how they acted。 Each character felt different in their own way eventhough at times I would forget who was who, but over all the character growth and character attachment was there and it added to how much I liked this book。 100% Recommend。

3/5 Stars This felt very meh for me。 I didn't love it and I didn't hate it。 Everything fell very flat to me。 I wasn't invested in the characters all that much。 There were some moments that piqued my interest, like the book's magic。 I'm not sure if it was the writing or the actual story but for the most part, I just didn't really care。 I would recommend taking everything I say with a grain of salt。 I am not the intended audience for this book。 It also had all the makings for a good fantasy book。 3/5 Stars This felt very meh for me。 I didn't love it and I didn't hate it。 Everything fell very flat to me。 I wasn't invested in the characters all that much。 There were some moments that piqued my interest, like the book's magic。 I'm not sure if it was the writing or the actual story but for the most part, I just didn't really care。 I would recommend taking everything I say with a grain of salt。 I am not the intended audience for this book。 It also had all the makings for a good fantasy book。 We'll just put this all to personal preference。 I would still recommend it for teens, I could them really enjoying it。 。。。more

Jesus Christ。Pacing:It was fine until the story got into the weird time loop thing, and then it just kinda dragged on to the end with no real climax to speak of。 There were several points that could have been the climax, but they happened too fast and the stakes felt too low for it to matter。Then there was the completely unnecessary conflict that happened because I guess the author needed the characters to split up so Miuko could be captured。 But they literally could've split up the same way they did, minus the argument, and things could've been the same。 They were forced so far out of their established characters there that it was actually jarring to read。Overall Thoughts:This book could've been five stars if it had evened out the pacing a bit more, and put the characters in actual danger, and hadn't shown us a dying cat。 Yeah, that's a thing that happens in this book。 Brace yourselves。 。。。more
