Summary

The Arthur C。 Clarke award-winning author of Children of Time brings us an extraordinary space opera about humanity on the brink of extinction, and how one man's discovery will save or destroy us all。

The war is over。 Its heroes forgotten。 Until one chance discovery 。 。 。

Idris has neither aged nor slept since they remade him in the war。 And one of humanity's heroes now scrapes by on a freelance salvage vessel, to avoid the attention of greater powers。

After earth was destroyed, mankind created a fighting elite to save their species, enhanced humans such as Idris。 In the silence of space they could communicate, mind-to-mind, with the enemy。 Then their alien aggressors, the Architects, simply disappeared—and Idris and his kind became obsolete。

Now, fifty years later, Idris and his crew have discovered something strange abandoned in space。 It's clearly the work of the Architects—but are they returning? And if so, why? Hunted by gangsters, cults and governments, Idris and his crew race across the galaxy hunting for answers。 For they now possess something of incalculable value, that many would kill to obtain。

I never read anybody who portraits aliens as convincingly as Tchaikovsky。 His aliens are truly alien, they don't just feel like an allegory for some human trait。 I never read anybody who portraits aliens as convincingly as Tchaikovsky。 His aliens are truly alien, they don't just feel like an allegory for some human trait。 。。。more

As always with Tchaikovsky, super cool story, creative plot and setting and ideas, but the characters are one-dimensional caricatures。 Fun light read if you like space opera。

Confusing in places, but worth sticking with! The expansive and sometimes complicated world building makes the story hard to follow up first, but if you stick with it you will he rewarded with a story that pulls you in and has you at the edge of your seat as you turn each page!

。。。more

Not quite as phenomenal as /Children of Time/ but still a solid 4。5-star read。 Featuring the crew of the Vulture God: an avuncular captain; a weary, done-with-this-shit pilot who can touch spacetime and alien consciousnesses; his duelist lawyer; a crablike accountant; a genetically engineered Amazon; a disabled tech in a giant scorpion mecha suit; and an auxiliary of an AI hive mind。 Plus the spook trying to make sense of the chaos they leave in their wake; a cult that worships an alien bivalve Not quite as phenomenal as /Children of Time/ but still a solid 4。5-star read。 Featuring the crew of the Vulture God: an avuncular captain; a weary, done-with-this-shit pilot who can touch spacetime and alien consciousnesses; his duelist lawyer; a crablike accountant; a genetically engineered Amazon; a disabled tech in a giant scorpion mecha suit; and an auxiliary of an AI hive mind。 Plus the spook trying to make sense of the chaos they leave in their wake; a cult that worships an alien bivalve race; and a vast alien presence that can turn planets inside out。Reminded me in turns of /The Expanse/, /To Sleep in a Sea of Stars/, and /The Vanished Birds/ 。。。more

A pretty solid space opera that has all the tropes。

Awesome sci-fi。 If you like space ship stories, you’ll love it :-)

Tchaikovsky's books are either some of my favorite books of all time, or they're books I don't finish because the characters are not interesting enough to warrant slogging through the world building。 This feels like he took a Stellaris game and turned it into a trilogy on a short turn around。 Tchaikovsky's books are either some of my favorite books of all time, or they're books I don't finish because the characters are not interesting enough to warrant slogging through the world building。 This feels like he took a Stellaris game and turned it into a trilogy on a short turn around。 。。。more

Honestly? My least favorite book from this author thus far。 The characters are random, and unlovable despite the author’s best attempts。 The world building is so far from the author’s usually magnificent style that I find it hard to believe that this book was indeed penned by him。 Great concept though。

Pure Space Opera。 Yes, I'm interested in what happens next。 And what drives the Architects。 Better than the Social Fiction masquerading as Science Fiction nowadays。 What makes SF special is that the author puts forth his/her ideas explaining the behaviour of the universe and its contents therein。 And the Reader comes up with his/her own ideas and compares them against what's being presented。 Does this book have great ideas? No。 Does this book get you involved in its history? I was disappointed by this book。 I recently read Doors of Eden by the same author and was impressed by the quality of writing。 I find it hard to believe this is the same author。 The plot was not well-conceived, most of the characters throwaways, and the dialog was really poor。 I found it very difficult to finish this book and was skimming it by the end。 This puts me off this author completely - I had been planning to read another of his books but I’ll try something else next。

I needed a break from heavier reading, and this filled the need。 It’s got galactic range, a diverse group of protagonists, some characters with twists and turns in their values and ambitions, and a powerful and mysterious antagonist。I’m a sucker for space opera, and I admit my bar isn’t really all that high。 This cleared it pretty easily。Why do I, and other people, like to read space operas? Maybe it's kind of simple。 Maybe it’s the grand scale itself。 Maybe it’s heroism on that grand scale。 One I needed a break from heavier reading, and this filled the need。 It’s got galactic range, a diverse group of protagonists, some characters with twists and turns in their values and ambitions, and a powerful and mysterious antagonist。I’m a sucker for space opera, and I admit my bar isn’t really all that high。 This cleared it pretty easily。Why do I, and other people, like to read space operas? Maybe it's kind of simple。 Maybe it’s the grand scale itself。 Maybe it’s heroism on that grand scale。 One thing that seems to recur in them is a big conflict between characters who rise to the occasion, the threat to all humanity (or more), and those who, in the midst of that threat, persist in petty personal ambitions and power struggles。 We root for heroes and heroic character on the biggest possible scale of conflict and danger! Okay, back to the book。The plot rides the edge of dystopia。 The Earth has already been destroyed by a mysterious alien force, called the Architects。 They shred and recompose planets and anything in their path into what seem like artistic structures, without regard for any living or intelligent creatures eliminated in the process。 Earth now sits as a ruin, a reminder of what the Architects can do and may do again。 But colonies beyond Earth survived and semi-prosper。In the initial contact with the Artchitects, Earth and humanity were defenseless, until they deployed biologically-altered “Intermediaries。” Intermediaries were bred and trained to navigate spaceships through “unspace” — a void outside regular space that shortcuts travel across astronomical distances。Intermediaries work through a kind of telepathic sense, not completely understood but verifiable and somewhat although unreliably reproducible。 The Intermediaries are the one defense for humanity, and other civilized species, against the Architects。 One of them, Idris, has led a successful response to the Architects, turning them away apparently by being able to make a mind-to-mind contact with them that let them know simply that we, intelligent and civilized humanity, was there, in their path of destruction。Much of the story concerns the aftermath of the Architects’ attack and departure。 There is a re-sorting of power, within both the human colonies that survived the attack and non-human species equally threatened by the possibility that the Architects will be back。How do you prepare for an enemy you can’t communicate with, can’t fight effectively, and don’t understand? Idris in particular believes that the Architects will be back, that peace is temporary。 The story follows the political conflicts and machinations of the human colonies and the other species as they pursue both their own ends and goals but at the same time try to deal with the ever-looming threat。And of course, the Architects do return。 Idris has joined a small crew of mostly non-political adventurers making their living as for-hire spacefarers, delivery specialists and messengers across interstellar space。 With the return of the Architects, Idris’s job title moves from ship navigator to species savior, or hoped-for savior。That’s as far as I should take the plot, without saying too much。 It mixes action, political machination, bad actors, and somewhat-torn actors trying to decide between allegiances to civilization, humanity, and their own factions。One character, Solace, is especially interesting。 Solace is a member of the Parthenon, a group, entirely female, bred artificially as warriors, defenders of humanity。 Solace and Idris have a long history, back to the first attack from the Architects, and a loyalty to one another that survives all of those flows and conflicts of politics and other loyalties。I have my favorites among space operas。 My classic favorite is Asimov’s Foundation。 It really does still set the standard — great idea, huge scale both in time and space, and lots of conflicts and quirks。 A more modern favorite is The Expanse — darker, and with an ingredient I can’t resist — the inscrutable alien technology。This falls short still of those two。 The Architects are an intriguing antagonist, and I’m hoping for more development in the succeeding books in the series。 I can’t say I’m fully endeared to the characters — that could be a good thing or a bad thing — but Idris, Solace, and the others somehow don’t tug at my heartstrings or headstrings。 I certainly root for them, and especially root for them to “do the right thing。” But, at least, at this point, they don’t grab me the way the crew of the Rocinante grabbed me in The Expanse。All in all, I’m interested to go on in the series, just maybe not with the fervor I had for those other space opera series。 。。。more

Unless you’re a sci fi aficionado this book is very difficult to fully immerse yourself in at first: there are too many people, aliens, terms, and processes that the author throws at you all at once。 That being said, if you stick with it, it’s a fantastic story。

First off, this book is an amazing departure from the "Children" series。 The premise of this book has several interesting parts。 I for one, loved the mystery and myth around the Architect, the whole Int program, the various alien species (though I would have loved a little more detailing about them) and the space action, but I was not so impressed with the politics, the diversions taken, the cultist aliens etc。 This book was exceptional in parts where the writing was cohesive and kept the intere First off, this book is an amazing departure from the "Children" series。 The premise of this book has several interesting parts。 I for one, loved the mystery and myth around the Architect, the whole Int program, the various alien species (though I would have loved a little more detailing about them) and the space action, but I was not so impressed with the politics, the diversions taken, the cultist aliens etc。 This book was exceptional in parts where the writing was cohesive and kept the interest on fire, but others it was drab。 Overall, definitely worth continuing the series。 I am ordering Book 2 now。 Can't wait to see the army of Patho Ints!!! 。。。more

This book is an absolutely amazing space opera。 It kind of combines everything I love about the Wayfarers series by Becky Chambers with everything I love about the Expanse series。 There are many alien species to learn about, and we get to see how humanity has fit into a broader intergalactic community since first contact à la Chambers, and there is also a high stakes battle to save all of humankind against an unknowable alien entity like in the Expanse。 I loved all the characters, I loved the wo This book is an absolutely amazing space opera。 It kind of combines everything I love about the Wayfarers series by Becky Chambers with everything I love about the Expanse series。 There are many alien species to learn about, and we get to see how humanity has fit into a broader intergalactic community since first contact à la Chambers, and there is also a high stakes battle to save all of humankind against an unknowable alien entity like in the Expanse。 I loved all the characters, I loved the worldbuilding, and I loved the overall tone of the book。 It's uplifting in spite of the dire circumstances。 I love Tchaikovsky's writing and I can't wait to read the second book in this series。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this epic space opera, with battles, found family, alien races and so much political tension。 One thing I did find slightly clunky though was the world-building - there were so many instances when the plot would be paused for a couple of paragraphs in order to info-dump how the world works at the reader, and it was an incredibly complex and intricate world, with factions within humanity, technologies that need to be explained, ways of life of different species and factions of hu I really enjoyed this epic space opera, with battles, found family, alien races and so much political tension。 One thing I did find slightly clunky though was the world-building - there were so many instances when the plot would be paused for a couple of paragraphs in order to info-dump how the world works at the reader, and it was an incredibly complex and intricate world, with factions within humanity, technologies that need to be explained, ways of life of different species and factions of humanity, etc。 。。。more

This is maybe a 4。25*Inventive and interesting, thought-provoking, but made a little tedious with endless fight/action scenes。 I liked all the characters, and they're deftly situated/described, but since about a dozen different space species are described, I would've liked a little more character development。 I actually put this down for six months because I got so tired of the action, but it was interesting enough to return to and finish。 I'm interested in knowing how it all turns out, but I'm This is maybe a 4。25*Inventive and interesting, thought-provoking, but made a little tedious with endless fight/action scenes。 I liked all the characters, and they're deftly situated/described, but since about a dozen different space species are described, I would've liked a little more character development。 I actually put this down for six months because I got so tired of the action, but it was interesting enough to return to and finish。 I'm interested in knowing how it all turns out, but I'm not looking forward to another book of relentless action。It's good, it really is, but it wasn't my favorite。 。。。more
