Summary

Edward Fosca is a murderer。 Of this Mariana is certain。 But Fosca is untouchable。 A handsome and charismatic Greek Tragedy professor at Cambridge University, Fosca is adored by staff and students alike—particularly by the members of a secret society of female students known as The Maidens。

Mariana Andros is a brilliant but troubled group therapist who becomes fixated on The Maidens when one member, a friend of Mariana’s niece Zoe, is found murdered in Cambridge。

Mariana, who was once herself a student at the university, quickly suspects that behind the idyllic beauty of the spires and turrets, and beneath the ancient traditions, lies something sinister。 And she becomes convinced that, despite his alibi, Edward Fosca is guilty of the murder。 But why would the professor target one of his students? And why does he keep returning to the rites of Persephone, the maiden, and her journey to the underworld?

When another body is found, Mariana’s obsession with proving Fosca’s guilt spirals out of control, threatening to destroy her credibility as well as her closest relationships。 But Mariana is determined to stop this killer, even if it costs her everything—including her own life。

Preferred this to the Silent Patient

。。。more

I was prepared to be disappointed, because I was near the end and the suspect was too obvious - but the ending gets really twisty。 The reveal happens quickly (in line with whodunnit authors that Alex credits as inspiration), but it was, to me, a shock。 The writing was incredible and the London gothic elements sang to me。 My only 。5 star deduction comes from unanswered questions, which - to be fair - a reread might answer。 There are lots of plants and while most have Probably actually 4。5 stars! Whoa, what a book! There were twists and turns that kept me at the edge of my seat and hard to put down。 I borrowed the audiobook and so glad I did, as of course I can’t read Greek but by doing so, made it more understandable and more intriguing。 This is my first book I’ve read by Alex Michaelides and since I bought the bought I had to read it at once。 So glad I did, he is one heck of a writer! Applause 👏 applause 👏!

Saw the ending of this one coming but it was still a fun read! Enjoyed it more than The Silent Patient but I think there are a lot of similarities between the two。 I enjoyed all of the Greek mythology thrown into it, some of the characters were a bit unlikable but I think that makes them seem more real。 Saw the ending of this one coming but it was still a fun read! So I liked The Silent Patient and therefor I had high hopes for The Maidens, against all the sub-par reviews I've seen about it。 I even got almost half way into the book thinking "Why did everyone dislike this book so much? I hated it。 It was an easy out。 Michaelides tried too hard to make the ending come out of left field that it seemed like it came from an entirely different book。 All that to say: Alex Michaelides is an extremely talented writer but this novel just felt too rushed and not fully fleshed out。 。。。more

I've seen so much hype about this book, I had to give it a go。 And honestly, I think most of it is well-deserved。 Michaelides is excellent at keeping a reader on the hook, I don't know how many times I thought: "I'll just read one more page before I go to bed。。。"I love a good mystery, and I feel like they're hard to pull off。 This one did a good job of keeping me on the ropes for a while, doubting my own intuition on who it could be。 I thought that the reveal was quite satisfying。 I also really I've seen so much hype about this book, I had to give it a go。 And honestly, I think most of it is well-deserved。 Michaelides is excellent at keeping a reader on the hook, I don't know how many times I thought: "I'll just read one more page before I go to bed。。。"I love a good mystery, and I feel like they're hard to pull off。 This one did a good job of keeping me on the ropes for a while, doubting my own intuition on who it could be。 I thought that the reveal was quite satisfying。 I also really enjoyed the cameo of Theo from The Silent Patient! It made me want to reread it and see if any of the other characters pop up in that book。This one was super fun, easy to devour。 Sometimes it was a bit on the nose and over-the-top, but I found myself willing to roll with it。 I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for more from Michaelides! 。。。more

Really enjoyed the mystery/detective atmosphere。 I’m also a sucker for references to the Greek gods, so that didn’t hurt。

Kayla Kelly

Slow read, one dimensional characters, & lackluster plot。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I really enjoyed this book! I read the silent patient not too long ago so I especially enjoyed the small crossover between the two books。 The end was slightly confusing, Zoe and Sebastian’s plan didn’t really make too much sense to me but I still enjoyed the story all the same。

i- waoas much as i hate to say this- i did find some moments of edward fosca hot- yes i need helpafter reading this i came to conclusion and its quite hard hitting-unknowingly or knowingly, we affect so many people’s lives。 we affect them in a good way, in a bad way- and sometimes they fail, and with them we fail too。 our childhood defines such a major part of what we will become, what we are。 we always carry it with us, no matter how much you try to forget it sometimes。 it frames us。 ruth was a i- waoas much as i hate to say this- i did find some moments of edward fosca hot- yes i need helpafter reading this i came to conclusion and its quite hard hitting-unknowingly or knowingly, we affect so many people’s lives。 we affect them in a good way, in a bad way- and sometimes they fail, and with them we fail too。 our childhood defines such a major part of what we will become, what we are。 we always carry it with us, no matter how much you try to forget it sometimes。 it frames us。 ruth was also mentioned- even theo (though he is no saint) and i need alex michaelides to write more books, these two are not enough。(i love the greek mythological references in his book) 。。。more

I enjoyed The Silent Patient but this book was much less enjoyable。 It kind of feels like he drew the “plot” points out of a hat and just shoved them together and not in any way that makes sense。 Overall dissatisfying read。 Underwhelming ending。 Definitely do not recommend。

One narrator, reads easily and quickly。 The story is lol being in another world, lots of Greek mythology references。 Prof & Fred are creepy af。 Don’t really understand Fred’s plot though besides the end? Big twist at the end I didn’t expect but didn’t like all the ins and outs of it。 Love a cult reference & the ties to the silent patient。

Chelsea Erickson

Slow burn。 I appreciated the cross over with the silent patient although I wish I would’ve known that beforehand so I could’ve read this right after。 All of the references to Greek mythology left me wanting to read more stories based on them。

2。5 beginning was so flat, lots of plot holes and misdirection, I HATED the epilogue portion and the conclusion of this book。 But the premise of the story was so good and intriguing which is what kept me reading。 Blah blah blah i don’t care about this book
