Summary

Beautiful writing。 Beautiful translation。 The ache and the pain expressed are almost tangible。 The light and the healing, equally so。

When my book club picked a dense 500 page novel for the month of May, I just about died。 The last month of squirrley students and I had this thing to read?

Beautifully written but too many tedious details, too often, through out。 The best part of the book was the titles of each chapter。 Very short, poetic sentences。 Will buy the book for that alone!

Beautifully written! I tend to love anything set in France。

4。5 Beautiful layering。 It's a book which makes you believe that you can be healed。 While you start loving Violette from the beginning itself, you get to know Philippe later。 Typically people are categorised into 'good' and 'bad' and you realise that it's just a different point of view。 It's not exactly a page turner because you would want to dwell on what you just read。 Some phrases are just beautiful! 。。。more

It took me until about page 400 (of 482) to decide I liked this book。 I seriously disliked the bouncing back and forth between characters (so many I couldn't remember their names, and only one of whom I liked) and times。 I would never recommend this book to a fellow reader。That said, if there were time in my life (which there is not) to reread this book I would try again from the beginning。 Now that I know who is important in the story and who is less so, and have a vague idea of what happened w It took me until about page 400 (of 482) to decide I liked this book。 I seriously disliked the bouncing back and forth between characters (so many I couldn't remember their names, and only one of whom I liked) and times。 I would never recommend this book to a fellow reader。That said, if there were time in my life (which there is not) to reread this book I would try again from the beginning。 Now that I know who is important in the story and who is less so, and have a vague idea of what happened when, I would perhaps enjoy the author's unusual way of presenting it。 This is why I have given it three stars instead of one。 。。。more

Ok ok ok… this may deserve 5 stars? Just because I think the literature is honestly masterful and the translation is honestly so impressive。 But the ending felt rushed and feeling bad for a character the author clearly wanted us to sympathize with felt wrong。 I wasn’t totally sold on that part…。。 It wasn’t a dual POV, so the “were suddenly supposed to not hate the guy we’ve hated this whole time” didn’t fully work on me。 It did like 75% but not fully…。。 And I didn’t love all the perspective swit Ok ok ok… this may deserve 5 stars? One of the most beautiful books that I have read。 I adore the narrator, and I am sad to no longer have this story to return to each night。 It is sad, but ultimately a tale of human resilience。 There are many nuanced characters that come together and intricate plot twists that kept me from wanting to put it down。

A beautiful book - I really enjoyed it。

The main character literally works her way through life’s up and downs in the garden。 The story is much more complicated than that, including a mystery whose resolution surprised me, but the garden motif really spoke to me。

This was an interesting book。 It skipped around timelines, characters, places - but surprisingly, it was not difficult to follow。 Every character had such a strong and unique personality, I felt I could keep track of everyone and their place in the story fairly easily。 But it didn't have a ton of plot! It was definitely a slow book。 And unfortunately, I felt like some of the wording was lost in translation。 This was an interesting book。 It skipped around timelines, characters, places - but surprisingly, it was not difficult to follow。 Every character had such a strong and unique personality, I felt I could keep track of everyone and their place in the story fairly easily。 But it didn't have a ton of plot!
