Summary

In this fantasy thriller, four teens charged with murder and the illegal use of magic band together to devise the ultimate jailbreak。

Ever since his mother was killed, seventeen-year-old Cayder Broduck has had one goal--to see illegal users of magic brought to justice。 People who carelessly use extradimensional magic for their own self-interest, without a care to the damage it does to society or those around them, deserve to be punished as far as Cayder is concerned。 Because magic always has a price。 So when Cayder lands a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to apprentice under a premier public defender, he takes it。 If he can learn all the tricks of public defense, the better he'll be able to dismantle defense arguments when he's a prosecutor。 Then he'll finally be able to make sure justice is served。

But when he meets the three criminals he's supposed to defend, it no longer seems so black and white。 They're teenagers, like him, and their stories are 。 。 。 complicated, like his。 Vardean, the prison where Cayder's new clients are incarcerated, also happens to be at the very heart of the horrible tear in the veil between their world and another dimension--where all magic comes from。

I wish I was blown away but I was not。The premise of this book was so interesting and it was marketed as a ‘Six of Crows’ type of story so I was immediately on board。 But it just didn’t have that same level of excitement。 The characters were interesting and I especially liked Cayder and Leta。 But the overall story felt underdeveloped。I think the world building could have been better。 The pacing of the story felt awkward at times。 The actual plot and twists felt a little lacklustre。 It was exciti I wish I was blown away but I was not。The premise of this book was so interesting and it was marketed as a ‘Six of Crows’ type of story so I was immediately on board。 But it just didn’t have that same level of excitement。 The characters were interesting and I especially liked Cayder and Leta。 But the overall story felt underdeveloped。I think the world building could have been better。 The pacing of the story felt awkward at times。 The actual plot and twists felt a little lacklustre。 It was exciting, don’t get me wrong, but there was something missing from the story。Overall, just so-so for me。 。。。more

They definitely deserve a mention and to be recognised。 They aren’t words but they still add so much to the story。 As a very visual person, I loved that they were included。Time to talk characters。 I liked them all apart from Cayder。 Which is very unfortunate since he took on the role as protagonist。 Astrid described him as being a “bit of a know-it-all” on her Instagram which is 100% correct, and it made him really infuriating。 He knows what he’s passionate about and follows his dreams no matter what obstacle is put in front of him which I love and support but he’s honestly so ignorant when it comes to actual legal matters and how to deal with them。 His bias towards the cases comes through strong。 I wrote down two quotes I’ll use as an example:”If I get up on the stand and say I saw these seem creatures, then hopefully that will make the jury question everything the prosecutor says。”Yes, because the jury will definitely believe the brother of the criminal based off something he saw but has no proof on。 Yet he’s so sure that it’s the flawless plan。”Leta would go free, and the princess would be released to be crowned as the queen。 And the Regency would be disbanded”Same goes for this。 Getting the princess to testify as a witness is totally going to work。 Have we forgotten she’s classed as one of the three most dangerous criminals in the prison at the moment and is supposed to be behind bars, not standing before the jury in the courtroom during another criminal’s trial? Enough about Cayder。 I didn’t like him。 Moving on。 Jey was my favourite。 I fall hard for the sarcastic characters and some of his comebacks were prize-worthy。 I liked Graymond。 Not only is he great at his job, he’s loyal, protective, he thinks clearly and maturely, unlike Cayder, and is just a really solid, well-rounded character。 I don’t feel like we really got to know Elenora very well but she seemed alright。 I liked Kema。 They’re the only characters I’ll mention by name but everyone else was good。 I can’t think of anything negative I’d say。 Just Cayder got on my nerves a little bit。Something else I liked is how all the cases tied together。 I think that was pulled off really well。 It made sense and there were no obvious gaps in the plot that I picked up on, though it ended on enough mystery and suspense to get you excited for book two。 It wasn’t a cliffhanger, really, but it ended on a dozen possibilities that book two could explore。Overall, even though this book took me a while to finish, I enjoyed it。 Rating: 3。5/5 。。。more

Very slow until the last 25%。 I felt as though there were parts that were underdeveloped。 For most of the book, the Regency is just mentioned as this big bully of an organization, but there isn't much backstory about the Regency or why they come to power when the monarchy can't be in power in this society。 There were a couple of decent plot twists toward the end but nothing that made my jaw drop。 The ending was very abrupt and unfulfilling。 I enjoyed the character of Jey the most with his quirky Very slow until the last 25%。 I felt as though there were parts that were underdeveloped。 For most of the book, the Regency is just mentioned as this big bully of an organization, but there isn't much backstory about the Regency or why they come to power when the monarchy can't be in power in this society。 There were a couple of decent plot twists toward the end but nothing that made my jaw drop。 The ending was very abrupt and unfulfilling。 I enjoyed the character of Jey the most with his quirky sarcasm。 I loved Four Dead Queens so I was a bit disappointed that I didn't enjoy this one as much since they were written by the same author。 。。。more

Even though this isn’t marked as such on goodreads I assume it’s at least a duology because it’s half the story。 I wasn’t a super fan of the shifting POVs but Scholte made it work more or less。 The problem is there’s just so much exposition。

My least favourite Scholte to date。 (As an aside。。。 how have I read everything by this author when I don't even LIKE their writing style??? #LibrarianProblems)Don't be fulled by the blurb - this book is 9 parts boring legal drama and 1 part exciting jailbreak。 It did have an interesting concept (albeit one that it practically impossible to explain to anyone who hasn't read the book), but whatever interest I had in the characters diminished the more I got to know them。Honestly。。 this book dragged My least favourite Scholte to date。 (As an aside。。。 how have I read everything by this author when I don't even LIKE their writing style??? #LibrarianProblems)Don't be fulled by the blurb - this book is 9 parts boring legal drama and 1 part exciting jailbreak。 It did have an interesting concept (albeit one that it practically impossible to explain to anyone who hasn't read the book), but whatever interest I had in the characters diminished the more I got to know them。Honestly。。 this book dragged。 Not only that, but by the end I was just as confused and adrift as when I started - if not more。 This may appeal to some readers, but not everyone。 。。。more

The last book I read by this author was Four Dead Queens, and my experience there could be summed up as a disappointment。 It was a clever, unique concept, but the execution did not compare。 That’s why I was a bit hesitant to start this one, but I’m happy to say that this book was a much better experience than Four Dead Queens。 However, it still is more fascinating in concept than execution, as I found myself wanting to see a lot of things explored more in depth。 Besides that, the characters and The last book I read by this author was Four Dead Queens, and my experience there could be summed up as a disappointment。 It was a clever, unique concept, but the execution did not compare。 That’s why I was a bit hesitant to start this one, but I’m happy to say that this book was a much better experience than Four Dead Queens。 However, it still is more fascinating in concept than execution, as I found myself wanting to see a lot of things explored more in depth。 Besides that, the characters and their relationships were shallow, and the overarching theme of pointing out the flaws in the prison system is pretty basic。 Still, it was an easy, entertaining read。However, if this isn’t the beginning of a series, I’d have to dock a star since the ending wraps up so little。 I’d 100% believe it’s the start of the series if goodreads wasn’t listing it as a standalone。 。。。more

3。5 starsThis was a pretty solid book。 I really liked the lawyer/public defender perspective in a fantasy book。 Unfortunately, the plot carries it a lot, and was the only part that really kept me engaged。 I found all the characters to be very flat and 2-dimensional :(I think Leta was probably the most intriguing。 And Jey was a promising character, but he wasn’t around for most of the middle part of the story。 The romance also felt super underdeveloped…especially between Cayder and Elenora。 The b 3。5 starsThis was a pretty solid book。 I really liked the lawyer/public defender perspective in a fantasy book。 Unfortunately, the plot carries it a lot, and was the only part that really kept me engaged。 I found all the characters to be very flat and 2-dimensional :(I think Leta was probably the most intriguing。 And Jey was a promising character, but he wasn’t around for most of the middle part of the story。 The romance also felt super underdeveloped…especially between Cayder and Elenora。 The betrayal didn’t hit me hard given that I didn’t really see the chemistry between them。 Also the second romance did thoroughly surprise me, I’ll give it that。 But it also felt a little weird and wasn’t shown very well。 I wish we got more backstory and moments to actually understand the depth of his love and loyalty。 Also in case you don’t wanna be mis-informed about this book, do know that a large part of it revolves around the trial。 And the overarching plot of the story is about a corrupt government, and our hero who originally supported it, finally learns the truth。 It’s pretty fast-paced and easy to follow, and it’s almost like a mystery。 Do NOT go into this book expecting anything similar to Six of Crows。 It’s not similar at all to that book, and honestly lacks a large amount of nuance in comparison。 You will be disappointed if you’re expecting a SOC-like story。 The heist itself felt more like the Boiling Rock episode from ATLA, since it’s about breaking people out of a prison。 It was still pretty fun to read。 And I don’t have much to say about the magic system, and the illegal “Edem” because it’s largely unknown and vaguely described。 Like the characters themselves don’t even know much。 I don’t know if the author is going to write a sequel or leave it off in this ending, but if they do choose to elaborate, it’s an intriguing concept。 Reminds me a lot of the Upside Down from Stranger Things。 。。。more

This was my second Astrid Scholte novel and I really loved it。 Cayder’s and Leta’s perspectives were the most attention-grabbing。 I was intrigued by Jey’s perspective as well but didn’t get much out of Princess Elenora’s。 The story was so mysterious and very much a crime mystery。 I just hope there will be a sequel because the ending was kind of incomplete!Rating: 5*

I loved the uniqueness of this story - something I haven’t seen explored in this way before。 The concept of Edem was really intriguing and I’m really looking forward to discovering more about its origins。 There’s certainly sci-fi elements woven within this largely fantasy tale。 The light that keeps Edem at bay, like the biggest defuser, halo light you can imagine。 The prison was really well-crafted and the intricacies of the legal system made it all so real。 This was our senior book club pick fo I loved the uniqueness of this story - something I haven’t seen explored in this way before。 The concept of Edem was really intriguing and I’m really looking forward to discovering more about its origins。 There’s certainly sci-fi elements woven within this largely fantasy tale。 The light that keeps Edem at bay, like the biggest defuser, halo light you can imagine。 The prison was really well-crafted and the intricacies of the legal system made it all so real。 This was our senior book club pick for the Easter holidays and Astrid Scholte spoke to our book club via Zoom after we’d finished reading。 A fabulous experience。Reading age: 12+ yearsInterest age: 14+ years 。。。more

In short: great world-building, cliffhanger ending, page-turner。 This fantasy novel is set predominantly inside an impenetrable prison, where four teenagers (three charged with Edem-based crimes, and one an intern trying to defend them) attempt to break out。 The broader setting is Telene, a nation trying to defend against Edem, a highly dangerous, time-altering magic that lurks in shadows。 All Edem use is banned, and offenders end up in Vardean prison, where nobody has ever escaped。 The main cha In short: great world-building, cliffhanger ending, page-turner。 This fantasy novel is set predominantly inside an impenetrable prison, where four teenagers (three charged with Edem-based crimes, and one an intern trying to defend them) attempt to break out。 The broader setting is Telene, a nation trying to defend against Edem, a highly dangerous, time-altering magic that lurks in shadows。 All Edem use is banned, and offenders end up in Vardean prison, where nobody has ever escaped。 The main character, Cayder, wants to be a prosecutor one day, but is working as an intern for the public defender to get some inside experience。 Cayder's mother was killed in an Edem-based accident, and Cayder wants nothing more than to keep all Edem criminals locked up forever。 When Cayder starts working with three young offenders who have just been brought to the prison, he realises that not everything is as it seems。 Astrid Scholte has a talent for world-building, and her examination of the judicial system and broader political framework of Telene is well done。 。。。more

I really appreciate Penguin Teen sending me an eARC of this one! I'm a huge Astrid Scholte fan so it pains me to admit that this book didn't live up to my expectations。 I suppose a part of it was the framing/marketing, since this is billed as a heist novel。 The heist planning and execution only happened in the last 30% of the book, and it was pretty half-heartedly thrown together (Cayder is not on Kaz Brekker's level)。 The rest of the book was a legal drama, which was at times interesting but no I really appreciate Penguin Teen sending me an eARC of this one! I was in the mood for a fun quick page-turner of a book and this was it。 The world building and characters lacked depth。 Passive voice was used excessively (perhaps intentionally, not sure)。 Maybe it's because I've been editing a lot lately, it was hard to turn the editor-brain off when things like "he was brought his dinner" or "he let out an exhale" could have been rephrased with tighter, more polished language language。 Overall, though it was fine。 Fun and easy to read despite the negatives。 I was in the mood for a fun quick page-turner of a book and this was it。 The world building and characters lacked depth。 Passive voice was used excessively (perhaps intentionally, not sure)。 Maybe it's because I've been editing a lot lately, it was hard to turn the editor-brain off when things like "he was brought his dinner" or "he let out an exhale" could have been rephrased with tighter, more polished language language。 Overall, though it was fine。 Fun and easy to read despite the negatives。 。。。more
