A very good novel。 I even watched the anime after reading this。 A recommended read。

Does not have the most stellar writing in the world (nor translation, the "r-slur" is still kept in the new print edition) but honestly, a must-have for surviving haruhi fans; just not great for avid light novel fans。 Does not have the most stellar writing in the world (nor translation, the "r-slur" is still kept in the new print edition) but honestly, a must-have for surviving haruhi fans; just not great for avid light novel fans。 。。。more

"The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" has been one of the most important anime in my teenage years。 Coming back from school and watching an anime about an everyday-guy doing teenage things with aliens, time-travellers, espers and an unconscious God was charming in a strange way to me, strucking the boredom and the melancholy of the 16-years old me。Coming back to this story at 23, after many years, sure got some melancholy and nostalgy in it。 This is the first of a long series of book and is the so "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" has been one of the most important anime in my teenage years。 Coming back from school and watching an anime about an everyday-guy doing teenage things with aliens, time-travellers, espers and an unconscious God was charming in a strange way to me, strucking the boredom and the melancholy of the 16-years old me。Coming back to this story at 23, after many years, sure got some melancholy and nostalgy in it。 This is the first of a long series of book and is the source material of only the first six episodes of the anime。 The anime is maybe a better media to approach this series, in the book I initially felt Kyon way more as a pervert as he was portrayed in the anime and its comments on the naive and attractive Asahina didn't really age well。 It's too bad that - at least in Italy - the anime isn't on Prime Video or Netflix, would totally do a rewatch if it was there。Overall, it's definitely a good book。 At first I thought that this first entry would leave me incomplete as the anime, which, with 2 series and the movie, only covers the first 4 books。I'm looking forward to read the next entry, and looking forward to read the Disappearence, whose movie was a total masterpiece。 。。。more

I'm not gonna avoid spoilers because I don't really think this is worth reading。So, to start with, rather than Haruhi Suzumiya, this seems all about the narrator, whose full name we don't learn, just the nickname Kyon, which apparently means something similar to 'Bambi' (it refers to a species of barking deer, and the n makes it a feminine name)。 His unique characteristics are non-existent, as being an awkward teenager and wanting to believe in paranormal things but not having enough evidence ar I'm not gonna avoid spoilers because I don't really think this is worth reading。So, to start with, rather than Haruhi Suzumiya, this seems all about the narrator, whose full name we don't learn, just the nickname Kyon, which apparently means something similar to 'Bambi' (it refers to a species of barking deer, and the n makes it a feminine name)。 His unique characteristics are non-existent, as being an awkward teenager and wanting to believe in paranormal things but not having enough evidence are not, imo, unique or even exclusive characteristics。 Also he's a horny teenager。 His development by the end of the novel is, as far as I can tell, minute to non-existent in terms of agency, honourable action, or innate, unsubstantiated belief in paranormal people/creature。Haruhi Suzumiya。 I can't really stand her as a character。 At her core she's a girl looking for magic in the world, which I can't take issue with, but every single thing about her seems designed to grate。 She's inconsiderate, rude, unobservant, and excuses her actions because she feels she has a higher purpose。 She gropes and attacks other people either for comedic effect, for the sexual gratification of the readers and author, or because at some level she understands and agrees with the central idea of the book, which is that the entire world revolves around her。 Her romance (is this a romance? It seems like an ignorant crush or high school fling。) with Kyon seems to be based on the fact that he is slightly less boring than everyone else rather than because he is attractive or more interesting or a good match for her。The unique way all of the paranormal entities are presented bothers me a little。 Haruhi seems like a girl completely set in her beliefs, with definite aspects of phenomena that she's looking out for。 I acknowledge the possibility that she could have come up with original takes on aliens, 'espers' and time travel but, this seems more likely a consequence of the author wanting something original to engage the readers than a reflection of subconscious assumption and conflation of things she's read about and hopes to see。 I admit I'm not really up on Japanese media and myth which does, at a glance, seem keyed to innovation and originality, but it clashes with Haruhi's character as I understand it。 Her disbelief, which leads to the major conflict, stems from a strong set of beliefs being unsubstantiated rather than a fluid hope which would by it's very nature, be perennial。This seems like a fairly accurate portrayal of the mind of a high school boy in that Kyon can't seem to make up his mind about which girl he's attracted to and/or wants to be in a relationship with。 Less realistic that he's surrounded by incredibly attractive girls all with some sort of emotional investment, and the girl whom the world revolves around is secretly in love with him, along with the loli that is part of his blossoming harem。 The only other guy who isn't a minor character is a pawn of Haruhi and seemingly not a threat romantically or sexually for anyone's attentions but rather an impartial observer。The ending - not really a conclusion or resolution - of the novel is a moment where Kyon is forced to kiss a hot girl who annoys and attempts to control him or the destruction of his world as he knows it and it being recreated more to Haruhi Suzumiya's liking。 Which would probably be fairly similar to what it was already except more obviously paranormal and he would have gone through all of this disturbing stuff and have been transferred from one world to the other as Haruhi's crush。 It's not a culmination of his feelings for her, she would seem to have shallow half-formed feelings for him, and honestly I'm not sure it would have been a bad thing for the world to have been made anew in the way of a muscle tearing to build up or a creature evolving to become greater。I think this book was a mistake。 The fact that it's a romance, that it revolves around the male unnamed narrator, the methods of Haruhi in searching for paranormal phenomena, the proliferation of actual paranormal phenomena。 It would have been so much better if this was a story about Haruhi alone, unlinked romantically, believing without evidence in a seemingly barren world, gradually learning to treat people better, accepting the idea that maybe she should improve her methods of observation。 If the whole world did not mystically revolve around her because she was in fact, magic or special in some huge cosmic lynchpin way, that would have improved her character immeasurably。 The pace leaves no room for her to develop a character。 She goes from baselessly believing she is better than everyone to, by the extradimensional climax, feeling out the edges of the base of her being an actual god/time anomaly/creator of life and exemplar of evolution。The prose isn't terrible。 It's not perfect and could use some work。 The main issue, though, is with the pacing of the events as it relates to negative character development, and a lack of depth in characters as a whole。 I feel that someone like Seanan Maguire, or Patrick Ness would have made this into a solid, deeply relatable work that I would read over and over again。The last Japanese thing I read was Lone Wolf and Cub, and the book I read directly before this one was The Book of Three by Lloyd Alexander and the contrasts between, respectively, character depth, and the complexity and realism of the relationship between Taran and Eilonwy aren't favourable at all to this book, so I may be judging too harshly, but shouldn't you judge something as it stands in literature as a whole rather than as it stands in it's genre?Plus this is like the first ever light novel I've read so I can't really judge it by it's genre。 。。。more

“Before it can be made beautiful, the world must first be destroyed。”Reading this light novel, from which one of my favorite anime was spawned, was honestly a bit of a let-down。 The anime of the absurdly long same name is a cult hit in the USA but hit Japan like a typhoon, even creating the “religion” of Haruhi-ism, and it makes sense。 Who wouldn’t love the story of an angry teenage girl who may or may not be God, but regardless has the ability to influence the very fabric of reality without her “Before it can be made beautiful, the world must first be destroyed。”Reading this light novel, from which one of my favorite anime was spawned, was honestly a bit of a let-down。 The anime of the absurdly long same name is a cult hit in the USA but hit Japan like a typhoon, even creating the “religion” of Haruhi-ism, and it makes sense。 Who wouldn’t love the story of an angry teenage girl who may or may not be God, but regardless has the ability to influence the very fabric of reality without her knowledge?“Nothing’s ever perfect。 The world keeps spinning on a tilted axis, just doing the best it can。”The story of TMoHS is profound despite its satirical take on traditional shounen tropes and absurd goings-on。 Beneath the surface, it has a lot to say on religion, sapio-centrism, the acceptance of the unknown, depression, and self-worth。 As an angsty teenager myself when I discovered Haruhi Suzumiya for the first time, I was moved by the idea of a POV character whose very importance came from being the only completely ordinary human surrounded by gods, aliens, and psychics。 I—also a sardonic loner, tormented by a massive inferiority complex—felt seen by Kyon。 Maybe everyone around me was extraordinary, maybe I wasn’t at all, but that has its own strengths。“It’s the death penalty! / Heads will roll!”The main issue I have with the original novelization of TMoHS is that the anime is almost beat-for-beat the same。。。 but massively better。 The book is such a visual experience, it’s practically begging to be made into a TV adaptation。 In fact, the lack of it being a visual story story hinders it in several ways。 Many of the pervy-er scenes in this book are horrific to read, but the cartoonish comedic tropes of anime lessens the blow to unrealistic silliness。 (I’m not sure if this says too much about the normalization of sexual harassment in anime or if it has more to do with an implicit understanding of the difference between the respective medium’s storytelling language。)Regardless: all in all, I’m much fonder of the anime than I am of this book, but I’m thankful for its existence so that the world can have the anime。 And now: excuse me while I got rewatch the while thing for the fifteenth time。 。。。more

Its an average light novel。 Some of the otaku jokes of this book haven't aged up as well, especially with the #MeToo movement。 If you can't stand seeing girls being sexually harassed for a joke, stay far away from this book。 Otherwise, its okay。 Its an average light novel。 Some of the otaku jokes of this book haven't aged up as well, especially with the #MeToo movement。 If you can't stand seeing girls being sexually harassed for a joke, stay far away from this book。 Otherwise, its okay。 。。。more

Revisiting this for the first time in almost a decade, and pretty sure at the time it was a fan translation。 The anime meant so much to me when I was 18, and it was nice to come back to this world, to speak。 Can't remember what I thought of the fan translation, but I found this one to be perhaps a little too on the literal side, and whether it's a translation issue or not, I found Kyon especially unlikable compared to the show's characterization。 I've always been interested in reading all the st Revisiting this for the first time in almost a decade, and pretty sure at the time it was a fan translation。 The anime meant so much to me when I was 18, and it was nice to come back to this world, to speak。 Can't remember what I thought of the fan translation, but I found this one to be perhaps a little too on the literal side, and whether it's a translation issue or not, I found Kyon especially unlikable compared to the show's characterization。 I've always been interested in reading all the stories that didn't end up being animated, so I plan on slowly making my way through the series regardless。 It's not great literature but it is a fun story。 。。。more

Incidentally, I have known Suzumiya Haruhi since I first started watching its anime series way back in 2006。 Back then, I don't have much interest in reading the light novel the series was based on。 However, ever since I've got my hands on a Kobo, I decided to give the light novels a chance。So begins my journey towards conquering Suzumiya Haruhi: The Light Novels; starting with Book 1。Even though I've watched the series (and rewatched them in 2008), every part of the novel has triggered memories Incidentally, I have known Suzumiya Haruhi since I first started watching its anime series way back in 2006。 Back then, I don't have much interest in reading the light novel the series was based on。 However, ever since I've got my hands on a Kobo, I decided to give the light novels a chance。So begins my journey towards conquering Suzumiya Haruhi: The Light Novels; starting with Book 1。Even though I've watched the series (and rewatched them in 2008), every part of the novel has triggered memories of moments in the series。 I was very surprised that almost 80% of the dialogue was verbatim to the series script! And because of that, I chuckled and laughed at a lot of the witty dialogue, especially the ones involving Kyon's internal thoughts。 Knowing that there are going to be complex characters in latter books, reading this does seem like a flashback of memories。Here, we're introduced to a whole lot of new characters。 The story revolves around Haruhi and her wish that the world would be a better place with aliens, time travellers and espers walk amongst us。 Well, she got her wish! - only thing is that she doesn't realise it yet。 Together with Nagato Yuki (alien), Asahina Mikuru (time traveller), Itsuki Koizumi and Kyon (ordinary human), they form the SOS Brigade。 Its aim? To find aliens, espers and time travellers。。。and have fun with them! So, is this book even worth reading? Well, I can summarise that the series is faithful to this original context。 I would still read it, just because I've fine tuned my mind to imagine settings, environments and emotions through reading。All in all, if you don't fancy the anime series (you should give this a go!), give this light novel a read! 。。。more
