Summary

An all-new, jewel-like, reader-friendly format gives new life to this relaunch of an international best-seller。

Leonardo da Vinci—artist, inventor, and prototypical Renaissance man—is a perennial source of fascination because of his astonishing intellect and boundless curiosity about the natural and man-made world。 During his life he created numerous works of art and kept voluminous notebooks that detailed his artistic and intellectual pursuits。

The collection of writings and art in this magnificent book are drawn from his notebooks。 The book organizes his wide range of interests into subjects such as human figures, light and shade, perspective and visual perception, anatomy, botany and landscape, geography, the physical sciences and astronomy, architecture, sculpture, and inventions。 Nearly every piece of writing throughout the book is keyed to the piece of artwork it describes。

The writing and art is selected by art historian H。 Anna Suh, who provides fascinating commentary and insight into the material, making Leonardo's Notebooks an exquisite single-volume compendium celebrating his enduring genius。

I feel as if the world is a better place for Da Vinci existed。 In a way to my surprise I found more of a grumpy, perhaps lonely, genius than the legend presents (particularly in the chapter comparing arts) , still those where is notes and only his full mind could seize the meaning and sense of them all。 The organisation of the book make it so that my interest kept growing as I read on, as I care for the humanities and times of Da Vinci, a lot more than the engineering or theories of painting。 Ha I feel as if the world is a better place for Da Vinci existed。 In a way to my surprise I found more of a grumpy, perhaps lonely, genius than the legend presents (particularly in the chapter comparing arts) , still those where is notes and only his full mind could seize the meaning and sense of them all。 The organisation of the book make it so that my interest kept growing as I read on, as I care for the humanities and times of Da Vinci, a lot more than the engineering or theories of painting。 Happy to have read this historical work and lucky to be in such a time where you can enjoy the inner workings of a brilliant mind。 。。。more

“Pleasure and Pain represent as twins, since there is one without the other; and as if they were united back to back, since they are contrary to each other”“The painter strives and competes with nature”“O Time! Consumer of all things!”“For nothing can be loved or hated unless it is first known”

As an (simple) example of Da Vinci's notebooks this is nice to read。 However it would be great to read the real CODEXES。 Some websites provide insight into some of the CODEXES but those might not all contain the real language and text。 But anyway I find Da Vinci the most amazing and interesting man who ever lived。 Considering the era he lived in his paintings, sculptures, studies and his 'inventions' are beyond his time。 Nice book。 As an (simple) example of Da Vinci's notebooks this is nice to read。 However it would be great to read the real CODEXES。 Some websites provide insight into some of the CODEXES but those might not all contain the real language and text。 But anyway I find Da Vinci the most amazing and interesting man who ever lived。 Considering the era he lived in his paintings, sculptures, studies and his 'inventions' are beyond his time。 Nice book。 。。。more

I don't like to give out five star ratings easily and I hardly ever apply the term genius to the product of an individual。 However Leonardo's Notebooks are deserving of both those things。 Sure, the presentation was not perfect, but neither was Leonardo。 In fact, he summed it up best in his own words on p。 389 of the printed version:I am fully conscious that, not being a literary man, certain presumptuous persons will think that they may reasonably blame me, alleging that I am not a man of letter I don't like to give out five star ratings easily and I hardly ever apply the term genius to the product of an individual。 However Leonardo's Notebooks are deserving of both those things。 Sure, the presentation was not perfect, but neither was Leonardo。 In fact, he summed it up best in his own words on p。 389 of the printed version:I am fully conscious that, not being a literary man, certain presumptuous persons will think that they may reasonably blame me, alleging that I am not a man of letters。 Foolish folks!。。。 They will say that I, having no literary skill, cannot properly express that which I desire to treat of, but they do not know that my subjects are to be dealt with by experience rather than by words。Enjoy the book。 。。。more

Great insights into the varied interests and futuritic notes of the polymath。 However, it might initially be a bit slow, probably due to the effect of translation。

Um livro maravilhoso sobre um dos grandes génios da humanidade。 O que seria de nós sem certos sujeitos que alavancam o progresso?

Good to read, but the language makes it difficult going。 Interesting that Leonardo probably discovered a number of ideas relating to motion and fluid dynamics well ahead of the scientists we attribute to their discovery。 Incredible he was so multi-talented, juggling projects in diverse subjects and working in a frenzy and at times not at all。 He comes across as quite money-oriented, although as he lived by his wits and seemed to be cheated often it's understandable。 Good to read, but the language makes it difficult going。 Interesting that Leonardo probably discovered a number of ideas relating to motion and fluid dynamics well ahead of the scientists we attribute to their discovery。 Incredible he was so multi-talented, juggling projects in diverse subjects and working in a frenzy and at times not at all。 He comes across as quite money-oriented, although as he lived by his wits and seemed to be cheated often it's understandable。 。。。more
