Summary

The short stories in this anthology offer glimpses into the unique writing style of the author。 Unfortunately, for most of the stories, I found either that the climax was lost or that the core purpose of the stories did not register。 Murakami's deadpan style, fantastic surrealism combined with dreary reality is evident in these stories。 However, very rarely did I find myself deeply connecting with the characters and caring about what would happen to them。 For most of these stories, I would have The short stories in this anthology offer glimpses into the unique writing style of the author。 Unfortunately, for most of the stories, I found either that the climax was lost or that the core purpose of the stories did not register。 Murakami's deadpan style, fantastic surrealism combined with dreary reality is evident in these stories。 However, very rarely did I find myself deeply connecting with the characters and caring about what would happen to them。 For most of these stories, I would have preferred a novel-length work as opposed to the brief entry into their lives before moving on。 。。。more

Murakami's work always manages to intrigue me in an entirely discomfiting way。 The narrators of each of his stories in this collection are curiously detached, apathetic observers to the goings-on around them, giving each the peculiar quality of not *actually* living through it。 I'm not the biggest fan of this collection, but I can't tell whether that's a feature of the stories themselves or the style。 Some notable favorites, however, were "Sleep," "The Dancing Dwarf," and "The Last Lawn of the A Murakami's work always manages to intrigue me in an entirely discomfiting way。 The narrators of each of his stories in this collection are curiously detached, apathetic observers to the goings-on around them, giving each the peculiar quality of not *actually* living through it。 I'm not the biggest fan of this collection, but I can't tell whether that's a feature of the stories themselves or the style。 Some notable favorites, however, were "Sleep," "The Dancing Dwarf," and "The Last Lawn of the Afternoon。" 。。。more

Just amazing, the humor and the surrealism is just typical Murakami。

What a strange melange of dwarves, elephants, and the minutiae of daily life

One of the persistent literary questions of my adult life has been, "Do I like Murakami?" I think finally I may have landed on the answer: Sometimes, I really really do and other times I really really don't。 Which feels like an appropriate answer for the literary master of spaghetti, elephants, and dangling surrealist plot threads。 This collection is fantastic for anyone else in the same boat as I, there is a wide selection of Murakami's oeuvre here (for better and for worse) and you will almost One of the persistent literary questions of my adult life has been, "Do I like Murakami?" I think finally I may have landed on the answer: Sometimes, I really really do and other times I really really don't。 Which feels like an appropriate answer for the literary master of spaghetti, elephants, and dangling surrealist plot threads。 This collection is fantastic for anyone else in the same boat as I, there is a wide selection of Murakami's oeuvre here (for better and for worse) and you will almost certainly leave with an answer to the question, as I have。 For this book, I decided to do a very thorough analysis。 First, I put the stories in order using a rudimentary system:+ means I liked the story- means I did not like the story/ means I was indifferent, or that I liked some parts and not othersA repeated symbol, ++ or --, means that feeling is emphatic。 So, here's the rough ranking with some brief notes:(++)The Last Lawn。。。 - Great imagery, engrossing character study, made me feel summers past。 (++)The Family Affair - Another great character study, very funny inner monologue。 (++)Barn Burning - Chilling。 (++)Sleep - Brutal。(+)The Wind up Bird。。。 (+)On Seeing the 100% Perfect。。。。 (/)Slow Boat to China - The story of how he met the 2nd Chinese person was great and should have been a story unto itself, the rest a big resounding meh。(/)Dancing Dwarf - Almost great, a great concept but the elephant factory didn't work for me and the ending was incredibly weak。(/)A Window - Made me want a "hamburger steak。" (/)The Second Bakery Attack(/)Silence(/)Lederhosen(-)The Little Green Monster - Underdeveloped。(-)The Elephant Vanishes - This guy loves elephants。(-)The Kangaroo Communique(--)The Fall of the Roman Empire。。。 - a shitty narcissistic diary reflection turned into a "story。"(--)TV People - I hated this, magical realism at its worst。 Many of his stories read as if he sat down to write them and used the first 1/4 of it to rev the story engine up, find something to coast on, and then either stick the landing or completely crash and burn。 I've noticed a similar pattern in his novels。 I'll read more of his work but could use a break after this one。 Mostly, this was an enjoyable read that really works when it works and really doesn't when it doesn't。 。。。more

Murakami has beautiful phrases but most of stories I found a bit bland。Both of the elephant stories were the best for sure。

Por qué en todas sus historias hay una mujer ¿Qué tiene de malo que haya mujeres en sus relatos? DNF。I love Murakami’s writing style and world building, but I felt I didn’t get enough from his short stories。 Each story felt they ended abruptly with too many unfinished questions。 I didn’t feel satisfied or that it would be worthwhile to finish it。 I guess I prefer his novels where the characters and weirdness of the worlds can become full fleshed and drawn out。

I love the recurring themes across all of Murakami's work, and they are very present in these stories - all very different, but connected by a bad plate of spaghetti, a name, a cigarette, classical music, a job in advertising。 The stories are very simple, hinting at otherworldly forces, strange warps in time and improbable situations and events。 My favourite story was Sleep - I'll probably be thinking about that one for some time。 I love the recurring themes across all of Murakami's work, and they are very present in these stories - all very different, but connected by a bad plate of spaghetti, a name, a cigarette, classical music, a job in advertising。 The stories are very simple, hinting at otherworldly forces, strange warps in time and improbable situations and events。 My favourite story was Sleep - I'll probably be thinking about that one for some time。 。。。more

It ended up giving me serious déjà vu。 When I was a kid, my father bought me a translated collection of world-famous fairy tales, and this one feels like a culmination of the sinister ones from that book, involving psychological monster metaphors and everything。But I’m currently at a loss at what the elephant factory meant。 I’m taking a guess it’s magical realism, but somehow it felt like they were making up robotic elephants。

each short story is a coin flip, unfortunately。 creative, but not his best。 sleep, the dancing dwarf, the silence, and barn burning were the ones that stuck out to me。 overtired, absurd, endearing, uncomfortable, respectively。 the shorter the story, the worse murakami's writing, less room for atmosphere, feels stifled。 you can pass on this one, unless you're a diehard fan。 i'm rounding down for now。 each short story is a coin flip, unfortunately。 creative, but not his best。 sleep, the dancing dwarf, the silence, and barn burning were the ones that stuck out to me。 overtired, absurd, endearing, uncomfortable, respectively。 the shorter the story, the worse murakami's writing, less room for atmosphere, feels stifled。 you can pass on this one, unless you're a diehard fan。 i'm rounding down for now。 。。。more

I struggled rating this book, as with most collections of short stories - you find that some of them stay with you for a long time and others tend to drag。 It’s the type of book you can’t read in one sitting, you have to read one or two at a time。This is the first book I’ve read by Haruki Murakami and his writing is truly beautiful, even when most of the characters are nameless you still are able to relate to them。 Personally my favourite stories were Sleep and Burning Barns。 Amazing stories tha I struggled rating this book, as with most collections of short stories - you find that some of them stay with you for a long time and others tend to drag。 It’s the type of book you can’t read in one sitting, you have to read one or two at a time。This is the first book I’ve read by Haruki Murakami and his writing is truly beautiful, even when most of the characters are nameless you still are able to relate to them。 Personally my favourite stories were Sleep and Burning Barns。 Amazing stories that will stick with me。 。。。more

A genius writer who, like any other genius, makes something terribly difficult seem as if anyone can do it。 With this seemingly simple but inimitable writing style, Murakami plays with our emotions as if they were his piano keys。

The order of the stories in this collection feels very intentional and the pieces are more or less unified by their psychological focus and scattering of motifs。 My favorites are "The Silence" (somewhat lighter on the absurdity and wrapped up with a nice clincher) and "Sleep" (reminded me of The Vegetarian by Han Kang), but in terms of memorableness/impact, I'd have to pick out "The Little Green Monster" and "A Slow Boat to China。" The order of the stories in this collection feels very intentional and the pieces are more or less unified by their psychological focus and scattering of motifs。 My favorites are "The Silence" (somewhat lighter on the absurdity and wrapped up with a nice clincher) and "Sleep" (reminded me of The Vegetarian by Han Kang), but in terms of memorableness/impact, I'd have to pick out "The Little Green Monster" and "A Slow Boat to China。" 。。。more

This book is undoubtedly made up of extremely interesting stories, which deal with analyzing the human soul to its innermost depth, analyzing feelings of beings alienated from society which, however, realize that beyond the life we see there is much more。 Murakami is a master at representing all of this。
