Summary

This had so many twists and turns。That ending。。。sad and downright eerie。

More normal day to day life combined with even more strangeness。 Old family secrets are starting to be revealed as well as hints at future events。

Gah I’m flying through these books。 I think I loved this one more than all previous ones。 A lot came of the characters, their stories and their relationships with one another。 I was especially pleased with Miriam’s growth。 I don’t want to spoil anything I will just continue with the same stuff I’ve been saying: it’s a great series, the story is thick and gripping, the characters are all so endearing if not problematic in their own ways。 Elinor and Francis’s stories are the ones I’m most anxious Gah I’m flying through these books。 I think I loved this one more than all previous ones。 A lot came of the characters, their stories and their relationships with one another。 I was especially pleased with Miriam’s growth。 I don’t want to spoil anything I will just continue with the same stuff I’ve been saying: it’s a great series, the story is thick and gripping, the characters are all so endearing if not problematic in their own ways。 Elinor and Francis’s stories are the ones I’m most anxious to learn more about。 。。。more

Brilliant continuation of the family saga, going to really miss it when it's all over。 Feels like it's missing something without a major antagonist though。 Brilliant continuation of the family saga, going to really miss it when it's all over。 Feels like it's missing something without a major antagonist though。 。。。more

Miriam and Frances start spending time together at the beach daily。 Frances spends hours in the beautiful waters。 After coming up from the bottom of the sea she has little recollections of deep diving and stalking and devouring fish and crabs。 The War prospers the Caskey family immensely。 Elinor starts to look and feel rundown but leaves her family for two weeks and comes back refreshed, her car hidden near the river where two young boys go missing。 Somebody turns into a creature with non-human Miriam and Frances start spending time together at the beach daily。 Frances spends hours in the beautiful waters。 After coming up from the bottom of the sea she has little recollections of deep diving and stalking and devouring fish and crabs。 The War prospers the Caskey family immensely。 Elinor starts to look and feel rundown but leaves her family for two weeks and comes back refreshed, her car hidden near the river where two young boys go missing。 Somebody turns into a creature with non-human eyes, a wide flat face, an enormous lipless mouth and rips the arms off a rapist then consuming both arms until her hunger is satisfied。 A new baby will be born, two women start living together, Frances will get married, Miriam starts a working relationship with her father but still will have nothing to do with Elinor。 The soap opera of addiction for me continues in a comforting way。 。。。more

When I started reading Blackwater I never thought I'd end up reading a book dedicated to fleshing out Queenie's three children。 Miriam is also massively humanised and developed here, and through Frances we start to learn a little more about her and Elinor's true selves。 When I started reading Blackwater I never thought I'd end up reading a book dedicated to fleshing out Queenie's three children。 Miriam is also massively humanised and developed here, and through Frances we start to learn a little more about her and Elinor's true selves。 。。。more

I wish it had more horror in it, I feel like horror was sidelined a bit in this one。

While this book proves to be one of the slower of the Blackwater saga to start, it really gains traction in the last 20% or so。 The War highlights shifts in the family dynamic, with the younger girls Miriam and Frances becoming adults and true assets to the Caskey family。 Miriam sheds herself of her perpetual coldness towards her family and becomes an essential player at the mill, helping her father immensely while forming a stronger bond with him。 On the other hand, Frances is faced with inexpl While this book proves to be one of the slower of the Blackwater saga to start, it really gains traction in the last 20% or so。 The War highlights shifts in the family dynamic, with the younger girls Miriam and Frances becoming adults and true assets to the Caskey family。 Miriam sheds herself of her perpetual coldness towards her family and becomes an essential player at the mill, helping her father immensely while forming a stronger bond with him。 On the other hand, Frances is faced with inexplicable challenges that she can only speak with her mother about, as she knows she is the only person who truly understands。 Grace and Lucille’s storylines were presented beautifully as well, I loved that these women are truly coming into their own and flourishing as adults, regardless of the opinion of others。 McDowell also gives a bit more insight into Elinor’s mysterious state of being that has been passed down to Frances。 Overall, while this book was more focused on familial relationships and members of the family maturing and/or settling down, there were still spooky elements, especially towards the end, that kept me on my toes。 。。。more

There is the horror and the very complicated family politics。。。 And then there are all these bits so incredibly wholesome and it's wonderful。 A normal family clan drama。 No one go around pointing out the protective hungry fish at the helm and the meal collateral, it's unseemly。 There is the horror and the very complicated family politics。。。 And then there are all these bits so incredibly wholesome and it's wonderful。 A normal family clan drama。 No one go around pointing out the protective hungry fish at the helm and the meal collateral, it's unseemly。 。。。more

The most sweeping instalment of the saga yet, spanning a decade and playing out, as it progresses, against America’s entry into World War 2。 It’s also the most pastoral and lyrical instalment - at least until the last fifty pages when something pretty damned nasty happens and something equally nasty immediately follows by way of retribution, after which the story settles back into gentler if somewhat edgier rhythm。 For all its ambition, it’s the least of the ‘Blackwater’ books thus far, often se The most sweeping instalment of the saga yet, spanning a decade and playing out, as it progresses, against America’s entry into World War 2。 It’s also the most pastoral and lyrical instalment - at least until the last fifty pages when something pretty damned nasty happens and something equally nasty immediately follows by way of retribution, after which the story settles back into gentler if somewhat edgier rhythm。 For all its ambition, it’s the least of the ‘Blackwater’ books thus far, often seeming like McDowell is putting his ducks in a row for the last two volumes。 。。。more

I've come to realise that this isn't so much a horror series as a detailed family history where someone happens to get eaten by a swamp monster every 100 pages or so。 To be clear this is a good thing。 I've come to realise that this isn't so much a horror series as a detailed family history where someone happens to get eaten by a swamp monster every 100 pages or so。 To be clear this is a good thing。 。。。more

The Caskeys are nothing short of dramatic。 Family foolishness, lined with supernatural, at its best。

As the story of this troubled family continues to unfold, secrets start to come to the surface。 A war is going on, but in Perdido, Elinor Caskey is waging her own war to get what she wants。 This book does an excellent job of continuing the mystery setup in the earlier books。

This volume edges us decidedly back down into Southern Gothic from horror。 There are really only two scary portions of the story: one actually is a horror element。 I won't comment on this as it's an integral part of the plot。 The other is more in the "campfire ghost story" vein。 The tone of the book, as a whole, is gloomy but not scary。This volume deals with World War II, as you might have guessed from the title, and its effects on the extended Caskey family。 It ends with the end of the war in E This volume edges us decidedly back down into Southern Gothic from horror。 There are really only two scary portions of the story: one actually is a horror element。 I won't comment on this as it's an integral part of the plot。 The other is more in the "campfire ghost story" vein。 The tone of the book, as a whole, is gloomy but not scary。This volume deals with World War II, as you might have guessed from the title, and its effects on the extended Caskey family。 It ends with the end of the war in Europe, and the deaths of FDR and the last member of the oldest generation of the family。 Despite the general Southern Gothic feel of the story, the family actually flourished during the war, and developed closer relationships where they had previously been estranged。Two volumes left to go。。。moving on to the next! 。。。more

Engrossing but not gross for an alleged horror story。

Miriam gains humanity and the world goes to war。 And several transgressors get eaten by a river monster。 Also, I love how the cabin in the woods and its fishing pond gets revisited for McDowell’s short story “Miss Mack。”It’s fascinating to see how progressive this serialized novel is with the strong female matriarchs that are positive role models (once they drowned the harridan) and the wholesome and accepted gay relationship presented in this one。 And the next novel starts out with the dictate Miriam gains humanity and the world goes to war。 And several transgressors get eaten by a river monster。 Also, I love how the cabin in the woods and its fishing pond gets revisited for McDowell’s short story “Miss Mack。”It’s fascinating to see how progressive this serialized novel is with the strong female matriarchs that are positive role models (once they drowned the harridan) and the wholesome and accepted gay relationship presented in this one。 And the next novel starts out with the dictate from the matriarch to the clan accepting Blacks as people, which is noteworthy considering the highly segregated Jim Crow setting。 There’s still some classism that needs to be unpacked, but there’s a lot going on here。 。。。more

The Caskey family lives through the war and the family keeps growing and the darkness is still there, but it just doesn't seem as creepy anymore。 Maybe I'm just getting use to the surroundings。 One of the best series reads I've read。 The Caskey family lives through the war and the family keeps growing and the darkness is still there, but it just doesn't seem as creepy anymore。 Maybe I'm just getting use to the surroundings。 One of the best series reads I've read。 。。。more

It’s the 1940’s in Alabama and the beginning of WWII。 The war comes to an end during the telling of this book and a whole lot happens in between。 With the exception of Mary Love, all formerly unlikable family members are a lot more tolerable。 This story amps up the mystery and tension a little further; although the slow methodical telling of this story is the same。 I don’t know why this book is so compelling。 I am usually a “can you get to the point already?” listener。 I feel so deeply enthralle It’s the 1940’s in Alabama and the beginning of WWII。 The war comes to an end during the telling of this book and a whole lot happens in between。 With the exception of Mary Love, all formerly unlikable family members are a lot more tolerable。 This story amps up the mystery and tension a little further; although the slow methodical telling of this story is the same。 I don’t know why this book is so compelling。 I am usually a “can you get to the point already?” listener。 I feel so deeply enthralled in these people’s lives it’s as if I am reading a secret journal。 Two more to go。 。。。more

The trials and tribulations of the Caskey clan continue。 In this volume it almost seemed as if the author was so involved in the development of the numerous character that he forgot it was a horror novel and had to rush some violent creepiness in towards the end。 Keen for the last 2。。。

The War finds the Caskey family coming together through a time of prosperity: the War is on, the local economy is booming, and the Great Depression is over。 It’s nice to see this family getting along—eating dinner together every week, going for rides to the beach in Pensacola, et cetera—as it seems they haven’t had much happiness in the first three volumes of this saga。 Volume four allows the reader to breathe a bit。 Because of this, however, the horror (and drama) aren’t quite as present, and t The War finds the Caskey family coming together through a time of prosperity: the War is on, the local economy is booming, and the Great Depression is over。 It’s nice to see this family getting along—eating dinner together every week, going for rides to the beach in Pensacola, et cetera—as it seems they haven’t had much happiness in the first three volumes of this saga。 Volume four allows the reader to breathe a bit。 Because of this, however, the horror (and drama) aren’t quite as present, and that may not do for some blood-lusty readers but I dug it。 This shows off Michael McDowell’s writing chops, and characters like Miriam, Grace, and Lucille are given more dimension than ever before and I loved them all 。。。 especially Grace! I stan。 And can I just address the sheer progressivism of this story? Within this story is a fairly open queer couple and they’re written with such even-handedness 。。。 they’re allowed to live and breathe as a “regular” hetero couple, which is rare for the setting of this story—and rare even for the time in which Blackwater was published。 The author himself was gay, so he was able to write about this subject with a sure hand。 This volume ends with a strong cliffhanger, one that made me want to press on ever quicker。 Think I’ll do just that。 。。。more

So far, ‘The War’ has been my favorite of the Blackwater Saga books。 The only thing keeping me from giving this book 5 stars is the ending-which just kind of。。。ends。 It feels more like the end of a chapter than the end of a book。 Considering that it is part of a saga (in the most literal definition possible), this may not be bothersome to most, but I can’t drive it out of my mind。

Jen

I’m so invested in this saga。 I don’t think I’ve ever read anything that I feel should be made into a tv series or mini series more than this。 Why, in 30 years since this has been written, it hasn’t been done is beyond me。 If I had the money, this would be the new Netflix show I would make happen! (I’m listening to the complete saga on audio book but rating each book/part as they end)

Troy

On to part 5, this is so good。
