I’ve read Vol。 1 before, but it didn’t really strike me as great。But rereading it (along with first-time readings of Vol。 2 &3) I now realize what makes this series so popular。The characters are enjoyable, the story is wild, and the childlike dream to be a pirate。 Overall it was just so fun to read。There over 100 more volumes of this bad boy I believe, so I’d better get started。

If you were in grade school back in the early 2000s, you may remember coming home and tuning into a programming block called Toonami on Cartoon Network。 This after-school variety pack boasted a collection of anime that had been given an English dub。 And that, dear readers, is where I first encountered One Piece。 Fast-forward about twenty years and One Piece is still going strong。 The manga recently hit 1000 chapters and the anime still airs once a week。 I tried to get back into the show, but ala If you were in grade school back in the early 2000s, you may remember coming home and tuning into a programming block called Toonami on Cartoon Network。 This after-school variety pack boasted a collection of anime that had been given an English dub。 And that, dear readers, is where I first encountered One Piece。 Fast-forward about twenty years and One Piece is still going strong。 The manga recently hit 1000 chapters and the anime still airs once a week。 I tried to get back into the show, but alas, I failed。 Instead I decided I'd go straight to the source and give that a try。Well, what can I say。 This manga isn't exactly deep, but it's very fun。The king of the pirates is dead, and with his last breath he challenged his fellows to find his legendary treasure, the titular 'One Piece。' Whoever claims it will become the new king of the pirates。 Now a young man named Monkey D。 Luffy has set out to assemble a crew and take the title。This omnibus tackles the first 3 volumes of Luffy's adventure。 We see his first encounter with Zolo, (Zoro, if you're a purist) Nami, and Usopp, and frustratingly stops in the middle of the Captain Kuroe arc。 The most interesting thing about this manga is comparing it to the show。 They largely follow the same path, but certain events play out differently and the pacing is also quicker。 So far, it's easier to get through than the anime, since I don't have to keep an eye on subtitles and there's no filler。 I can already see my main problem with the show starting to manifest itself。 The characters aren't that deep。 Yes we do get their backstory's and motivations (except for Nami, she'll come later) but we don't get much reason to invest in them beyond that。 All they really have going for them is a dogged determination to follow their dreams。But, you know what, who cares? One Piece isn't meant to be deep, it's meant to be fun, and that it certainly is。 The humor is on point, the story takes itself seriously when it needs to, the characters are memorable, and Eiichiro Oda's art complements it all perfectly。 Coupled with all its talk about following your dreams, One Piece is definitely a feel-good manga。 It even has little arts and crafts activities inside it。 Bonus! My biggest complaint at this point is how poorly fleshed-out the world is。 With things laser-focused on the straw hat crew, we don't really get a feel for the rest of the East Blue, or how this world works。 That's not enough to ruin the ride, though。 Perhaps I've just been spoiled by all those fantasy novels I've been reading。Is One Piece worth a read? Well, that depends on your tastes。 As long as you have fun, it's worth the money。 In that regard, I find that this omnibus was money well spent。 。。。more

What a great start to a very promising journey。 I like all the characters so far except Usopp who is kinda annoying。 The art is a little rough at first but I can already notice improvements。 Always wanted to get into this series and its now or never。

Luffy, like so many manga heroes, has a seemingly impossible goal: he wants to be King of the Pirates by finding the mysterious treasure One Piece。 However, as a kid, he accidentally ate a magical fruit that turned his body into rubber man who will never be able to swim。 Not that this will stop him, but he's set out to do all the same by sailing off without any idea where he was going and recruiting people for his crew, many of whom have no desire to even be pirates but agree to do so anyway for Luffy, like so many manga heroes, has a seemingly impossible goal: he wants to be King of the Pirates by finding the mysterious treasure One Piece。 However, as a kid, he accidentally ate a magical fruit that turned his body into rubber man who will never be able to swim。 Not that this will stop him, but he's set out to do all the same by sailing off without any idea where he was going and recruiting people for his crew, many of whom have no desire to even be pirates but agree to do so anyway for one reason or another。 Luffy's style is up-front and brash。 He always charges directly at any problem and will always speak the truth。 He's also not very bright。Now, this series does do a good job of not sugarcoating what pirates are。 Luffy is reminded frequently that pirates are thieves, not seafaring adventurers。 He doesn't seem to notice。 He also doesn't seem to be robbing anyone。 He may not be a very good pirate。One Piece is a highly popular, long-running series that may be coming to an end sometime in the near future。 It's funny as Luffy spends most of this triple-sized book fighting a clown pirate named Buggy。 Luffy may be too good a kid to be a pirate, but that doesn't mean he can't have some fun doing what he does along the way。 。。。more

All my old college pals are re-reading this and I wanted to see what the hype was about。 It’s fun! The characters are fun, the set up is fun。 I can see why this is such a staple for manga。 Also I enjoyed the art a lot more than I expected。 The paneling was extremely easy to follow and the linework was just on another level。 In some places I felt like the pacing was off, or rather its so fast paced in places when it does take time to breathe it drags a lot, but that’s sometimes typical of comics, All my old college pals are re-reading this and I wanted to see what the hype was about。 It’s fun! I enjoyed it, both the drawings and the story。 Sadly it does not have an end。 These 3 books end very abruptly。 The enemies from the books are interestingly built。

This amazing book is all about a young boy called Luffy and his journey to become the king of the pirates and to do that he will have to find a treasure called the One Piece。 HE has an even bigger chance for his dream to come through after he accidentally eats the gum-gum fruit that lets him stretch his body parts to unbelievable lengths。 My favourite character is called Luffy because when he sets his mind to something he won't change his mind till the end。 This amazing book is all about a young boy called Luffy and his journey to become the king of the pirates and to do that he will have to find a treasure called the One Piece。 HE has an even bigger chance for his dream to come through after he accidentally eats the gum-gum fruit that lets him stretch his body parts to unbelievable lengths。 My favourite character is called Luffy because when he sets his mind to something he won't change his mind till the end。 。。。more

i’ll admit one piece is fun and entertaining but I think I overall just prefer manga series that are a bit more dark and suspenseful i guess? I also just didn’t connect with the characters that much so yeah I mean I enjoyed reading the first 3 volumes but i doubt I’ll read the rest of the series honestly :/

Back in 2003 when i got my first job at 14 I picked up volume 1 at my local Barnes and noble。 My little teenage mind was blown away by how funny this book was and yet charming and exciting with art that went against most modern manga art styles。 So then I picked up book 2 and loved it just as much and decided to jump into the anime。 Years went by while I was in High School I watched the newest episode with subtitles every single week。 I loved it and stopped around the arc when Luffy got him gum Back in 2003 when i got my first job at 14 I picked up volume 1 at my local Barnes and noble。 My little teenage mind was blown away by how funny this book was and yet charming and exciting with art that went against most modern manga art styles。 So then I picked up book 2 and loved it just as much and decided to jump into the anime。 Years went by while I was in High School I watched the newest episode with subtitles every single week。 I loved it and stopped around the arc when Luffy got him gum gum Kio Ken move。 So anyway, fast forward about 12 years later and I'm ready to jump right back into the adventure and catch up。 I started with Omnibus 1 because I just had to see all these years later if it can recapture the same feelings。 This covers Luffy on his first adventure alone, meeting Zolo (I'm so used to Zoro, not sure why it changed), meeting Nami, and then the first arc with Usopp。 Zolo and Luffy's arc is probably the best, as it's fast paced and funny, but Nami has some heartfelt moments especially with a doggie, and usopp is charming and cute。 People say give one piece like 100 episodes before it gets good, but I disagree。 Right off the bat the series has so much spunk and excitement。 It's cute, it's funny, it can be super serious and pull on those heartstrings at times, and the fights are always exciting。 I think One Piece is the most sold manga of all time for a reason, because it's so damn well crafted。 While not the best arcs, they are to come, this is still a great start to the series。 A 4 out of 5。 。。。more

I’ve decided that I really wanted to rank each arc in this first half individually and give my thoughts on each one。 So here we go。Ranking of One Piece Arcs (Best to Worst):SPOILER WARNING!!!!!Marineford - The big battle between Whitebeard and the World Government itself! All of the family ties and bonds were what really made this arc emotional for me; so much friendship, love, and care are here, and every single moment has you questioning what could possibly happen next。 Hooked the entire way through!Post-War - All of the Luffy backstory here makes my heart hurt。 It’s amazing and really adds the salt into the wounds from Marineford。Water 7 - In all honesty, the main reason why this one is so high up is the setting。 I’m a sucker for any European settings and Water 7’s Venetian influence is definitely the closest the series has gotten to that at this point。 It made me feel like I was in (a Shonen manga’s version of) Venice and exploring everything it had to offer (unfortunately I haven’t visited the real Venice yet but I hope to someday)。 The story in this one is really good as well, and is incredibly tense。 Well done storytelling overall。Enies Lobby - The backstory and tension and everything here is superbly done。 It really shows the dark side of the World Government in full force for the first time and the whole Ohara story boiled my blood。Alabasta - All of the feels and emotion are here; manages to be a fun and satisfying story all at the same time。 Also a great way to conclude Vivi’s adventures with the crew (while I miss her a lot, I think it was a smart move to not make her a permanent Straw Hat, tbh)。Sabaody Archipelago - Deals with some pretty heavy topics, but has a lot of satisfying fights and a lot of cool new characters are introduced here。Post-Enies Lobby - A nice breather arc from the previous one that is very informative and tense while not being overwhelming。Arlong Park - This arc is the make it or break it arc for a lot of people, and it’s not hard to see why。 Personally, I don’t think anybody’s given One Piece a fair chance until they get through this arc。 If you don’t enjoy Arlong Park, it’s fair to say that you won’t enjoy the rest of the series。Thriller Bark - I’ve seen a lot of criticism for this arc but I personally enjoyed this one more than I thought I would。 I’m not even a huge thriller/zombie movie person! I liked the characters and scenarios in this one a lot, and I also love the atmosphere (the beginning of fall/Halloween is my personal favorite time of year and this arc made me feel like it was that time during the middle of summer which I greatly appreciated)。 Not to mention that I feel like this arc was one of the only times where I felt like the crew was in any real danger (if only Moria hadn’t gotten so power hungry he could have easily won)。Drum Island - Not only does this arc introduce the adorable little Chopper, but I personally love winter themed stories。 The villain was kind of lame though, ngl。Little Garden - Another one that I felt went on a bit too long, but was enjoyable regardless。 The best parts for me were when Sanji disguised himself as Mr。 3 on the transponder snail and all of the Zoro jokes。Baratie - So many tense moments and fun characters came from this one, but I personally found the villains to be a bit boring here and that dropped my enjoyment of the arc a little bit。Impel Down - This arc would definitely be higher on the list if it wasn’t just fight after fight after fight。 Besides meeting Ivankov and other brief moments, there wasn’t much time to breathe with this one。Amazon Lily - The second half of this arc was solid, but all of the “women being oblivious of a man” jokes got old for me pretty quick (and I’m a woman myself)。Whisky Peak - Zoro being a badass and a conspiracy revealed。 What more could you ask for?Syrup Village - I’ve seen a lot of people say that this arc was the worst out of the East Blue saga, and even the worst arc overall, but I have to politely disagree。 In fact, I consider this arc to be the first one I was really hooked on。 The conspiracy surrounding the pirates and the mansion made the story the most tense it had been at that point, and it was such an entertaining read for me。 The fact that the main antagonists had that cat theme going on helped a lot for me personally。Reverse Mountain - Another exposition arc; not much else to say other than that I can’t put it any higher or lower。Long Ring Long Land - I like that this one is a bit more lighthearted than other arcs (especially because what follows is insane), but the Foxy Pirates were so aggravating to me and their obvious cheating was a pain to read。Skypiea - The idea of a sky island is pretty cool, sure, but I just found this arc to be boring and a drag throughout。 I liked the flashback sequence of this arc, but it’s not enough for me to enjoy the entire arc as a whole。Loguetown - Another pretty forgettable arc for me。 Just the halfway point between the East Blue and the Grand Line。 Sabaody is an arc that does something similar to this one but in a much more entertaining way, imo。Orange Town - While some parts of this one are interesting and even heartbreaking, it just goes on a bit too long for me, imo。 I believe the enjoyment of this arc relies a lot on how much you like Buggy as a character; while later arcs made me like Buggy more, in this arc I found him pretty obnoxious。Jaya - Easily the most forgettable arc in the series for me so far。 It pretty much only exists as a setup for Skypiea and not much else。Romance Dawn - I give it some slack because it is the very first arc of the series, but compared to what comes after it, this arc is pretty bland, so unfortunately I cannot place it anywhere else on this list。And that’s my personal ranking of every One Piece arc so far! Can’t wait to continue on to the second half and see what’s next! 。。。more

The nostalgia this brings me is。。。 oof。 I watched the anime and now I am ready to go through all the manga! And although I love the first volume l, since I am aware of the epic proportions it’s eventually going to get to, I didn’t enjoy it as much as I would have otherwise。 Throughout the whole book I was just missing the rest of the crew, especially Sanji。But, it was a warming read, since it is one of the things that created me。。。
