Summary

Opposites attract in this battle-robot-building YA romance from the NYT best-selling author of The Atlas Six

Bel would rather die than think about the future。 College apps? You’re funny。 Extracurriculars? Not a chance。 But when she accidentally reveals a talent for engineering at school, she’s basically forced into joining the robotics club。 Even worse? All the boys ignore Bel—and Neelam, the only other girl on the team, doesn't seem to like her either。

Enter Mateo Luna, captain of the club, who recognizes Bel as a potential asset—until they start butting heads。 Bel doesn’t care about Nationals, while Teo cares too much。 But as the nights of after-school work grow longer and longer, Bel and Teo realize they've made more than just a combat-ready robot for the championship: they’ve made each other and the team better。 Because girls do belong in STEM。

In her YA debut, Alexene Farol Follmuth, author of The Atlas Six (under the penname Olivie Blake), explores both the challenges girls of color face in STEM and the vulnerability of first love with unfailing wit and honesty。 With an adorable, opposites-attract romance at its center and lines that beg to be read aloud, My Mechanical Romance is swoonworthy perfection。

What a great YA read, such a positive story。 Having known young girls who wanted to go into engineering and the hurdles they had to overcome to be taken seriously I appreciated that the author has bought this to light in her book。 It’s a story that celebrates friendships, diversity, inclusion , dreams, love ,family and so much more。 I loved the characters and especially loved that it was a female teacher to push the main character into a male dominated club 。 A male teacher runs the club but lea What a great YA read, such a positive story。 Having known young girls who wanted to go into engineering and the hurdles they had to overcome to be taken seriously I appreciated that the author has bought this to light in her book。 It’s a story that celebrates friendships, diversity, inclusion , dreams, love ,family and so much more。 I loved the characters and especially loved that it was a female teacher to push the main character into a male dominated club 。 A male teacher runs the club but learns that girls can be just as amazing as the boys if not even better but that they all work better as a team。 The book was easy to read and it flowed really well between the point of view of the two main characters。I think this would be a great story for schools to read in class or at least recommend it。 I received a pan advanced copy from NetGalley and all opinions are my own。 。。。more

Girlpower YAY!!!I enjoyed reading about all the characters。 This book had dual POV, so we got to read both Bel's side of the story and Teo's。 I really liked this, because I wasn't the biggest fan of Teo at the start if I'm honest。 He felt quite egocentric to me, but the more chapters I read in his POV, the more I started liking him。 He really won me over though when he accepted what Bel pointed out to him and started changing his behavior。 Bel on the other hand is a character I liked from the start。 From her doubt about the future, the struggle with her divorced parents, her 'special' clothing style,。。。 I feel like she had everything I relate to and like in a character。 She also wasn't scared to express herself and stand up for what she believes in。We also had a lot of sidecharacters。 I especially liked Jamie and Dash, and their dynamics and interactions with our main characters。 Their text conversations made me laugh out loud so many times。The teachers Ms。 Voss and Mac also played a 'big' role, and I liked that a lot。 It really showed us what a big influence a teacher can have on your life and school grades, bad and good both。It was also great that the families of both characters were introduced in the books。 I often feel like parents (and siblings) are very absent in YA novels, so I liked that we saw them involved in the characters lives and saw the influence they had on them too。As for the writing, it was good。 Definitely not as complicated as The Atlas Six, but perfect for a YA novel。 The characters had enough depth and development, the plot was easy and interesting to follow, and the romance made me crave more interactions between Teo and Bel。 Overall I really enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend picking it up when it comes out on May 31st。 。。。more

this was adorable, but ultimately the progression of the romance in the last few chapters irked me。 also, i think i generally have a problem with the ya genre in general。let me preface this by saying that i already know all the counters ya readers use。 i won’t lie and say i disagree, but i do think you guys are missing something very important: the ya genre as it is in western publishing very much mimics western culture, which makes it rather strange for non-western readers to read。 in the case this was adorable, but ultimately the progression of the romance in the last few chapters irked me。 also, i think i generally have a problem with the ya genre in general。let me preface this by saying that i already know all the counters ya readers use。 i won’t lie and say i disagree, but i do think you guys are missing something very important: the ya genre as it is in western publishing very much mimics western culture, which makes it rather strange for non-western readers to read。 in the case of this book, the high school drama is absolutely nothing like my own experience in our version of high school—our drama revolved mostly around academic stress, slacker groupmates, mental health, and the very occasional teenage relationship drama (which is very little like western teenage relationship drama, to be honest)。 they also break out the ‘i love you’s far too early, in my opinion。all of this to say that i spent most of the time after they got together yelling at the screen for them to get their shit together。 which is not to say that i didn’t like the romance! i thought they were sweet together, and i liked their banter, but ultimately i think this book would’ve been better off without the relationships drama towards the end。speaking of relationships, however, i loved that familial relationships weren’t neglected for the sake of developing the romance! they were definitely a side plot, but it didn’t feel like they were added in to give the main characters flavour, which i definitely appreciated。 the side characters weren’t as developed as i would’ve liked, but they still mostly stood out as individual characters instead of being a backdrop of the main characters, which is always great。 i particularly liked neelam because i know how that anger feels, and i think the author did a good job of portraying it。overall, though, i would recommend this to anyone looking for a sweet and easy to read ya romance! ➳ 2。5 stars, rounded up for poc romance :Dthank you to netgalley for an arc in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

I fell in love with this book cover and the title as soon as I saw them and knew I just had to read it。 Then, this book took me by complete surprise。 I was expecting it to be cute and fun but it surpassed every expectation。 I was not ready to fall in love with this book quite so hard。Bel and Teo have my entire heart as both individual characters and as a couple。 Their relationship was so sweet and so healthy。 They bring out the best in each other and it was so much fun to read。 There were so man I fell in love with this book cover and the title as soon as I saw them and knew I just had to read it。 Then, this book took me by complete surprise。 I was expecting it to be cute and fun but it surpassed every expectation。 I was not ready to fall in love with this book quite so hard。Bel and Teo have my entire heart as both individual characters and as a couple。 Their relationship was so sweet and so healthy。 They bring out the best in each other and it was so much fun to read。 There were so many adorable moments and I really enjoyed seeing their journey from friends to something more。 There are some really beautiful moments between them and lines describing how they feel about each other that just melted my heart。 I thought it would be fun and silly but it was so much more than that。 This book was powerful。 It highlighted the exclusion of women in STEM and one of my favourite moments was Mac realising that he had learnt a lot from Bel。 Often, the problem is that people don’t realise they hold different expectations for boys and girls and that they place them with differing levels of responsibility。 Mac realising that he had unconscious bias towards the boys was really important and gives me hope for a better future for the girls of tomorrow。 The side characters in this book were also just wonderful。 Lora, Jamie and Dash all have my heart (especially Dash, who is just the best friend ever)。 Their friend group brought me just as much joy as the main couple and this is so important to me in a book。 And I found myself absolutely loving Neelam! I thought her character was so important and seeing the differences between her and Bel was really interesting。 Some of the conversations between the two girls about the adversity they face being women in STEM were so impactful and I just wanted to give Neelam the biggest hug。 My favourite theme throughout the whole book was Bel learning to take up space。 She also learnt to take control of her own future and establish her own dreams based on what makes her happy。 It was amazing to see her development and I was rooting for her every step of the way。 The epilogue had me smiling so hard I thought I’d give myself a headache!! Thank you so much to NetGalley and Holiday House for the advanced reader copy。 I could read about Bel and Teo and all of their friends forever。 They have my heart。 。。。more

Robots + romance? YES PLEASE! I absolutely adored this contemporary romance where Bel is not only trying to understand what she wants but is besting all boys in the robotics club she accidentally found herself a part of。 I loved the dual POVs between her and Teo and the very carefully crafted portrayal of women in STEM。 Fun, hilarious and quirky。 A must read of the summer!

I am a SUCKER for romances with STEM in them。 I don’t know why, because I am awful at math and science, but it always grabs my attention and fascinates me。 Not only is the STEM representation in this book fantastic, but so is the diversity (cultural & religious)。 The theme of this book to me is being able to discover who you are and what you want out of life, and not bowing down to what others perceive or expect you to be。 There was a lot of character growth in this book for Teo and Bel, as well as another side character whose a little rough around the edges。 I loved the talk about the reality of girls in STEM and how it can be difficult to manage when everyone is looking down at you because you’re a female。 But females run the world so… The adults all sucked in this except for Ms。 Voss。 I did enjoy how Bel was managing her parents divorce because it felt very authentic to me as someone whose own parents are divorced。 This book was a little slow paced, and there was some repeatitiveness of material in chapters, but overall I enjoyed it。 It is definitely towards the lower end of the YA spectrum (takes place in high school) but not too young for me yet。 Bel is awesome。 She’s so blunt but in a nice and funny way。 “…until every girl who succeeds is like a beacon of light for all the others。”Also - Community college is free in CA?! (According to this story)。 So why can’t it be free here in MA too? (Asking for a friend…)TW: sexism, divorce 。。。more

Teo kind of 。。。 loves it。 They form an unlikely partnership after Teo spontaneously offers to help Bel learn the software she needs to learn as part of the robotics team。 He isn't even sure why he offered as first, except 。。。 when she talks, he can't take his eyes off her。 What starts with frustration and banter involves into much more, with B and T taking turns unloading their biggest fears and insecurities to each other。 Teo has the world on his shoulders, his path in life planned out by his teachers and coaches and parents, and he may or may not feel like Atlas himself。 Bel has aptitude and intelligence out the wazoo, but lacks the drive and resources Teo has。 Learning how to find balance in their lives is one of the many things that draws them together like magnets。 Normally slow-burns bore me, but in the case of a YA romance, I prefer it。 The characters are almost always getting to know themselves, so I like getting to take time to know them too。 The writer gives us lots of STEM-y goodness in the meantime。 If you've ever enjoyed Battle Bots, you'll enjoy the smashy robot goodness of the Robotics Team competition。 In the end, the sweet, nerdy romance you from a book called "My Mechanical Romance" is there。 Just not without a few bumps in the road。Bel kicks as much robot butt as you want her to, and she wears glitter Doc Martins while doing it。 She's an inspiring YA character, written to inspire。 I hope she succeeds。I would recommend "My Mechanical Romance" to anyone who wants a cute, easy read with good back-and-forth, solid character development and some laugh-out-loud moments。 Easily a 4-star read。 。。。more

My Mechanical Romance5/5I absolutely LOVED this book! It was a cute, quick read and I really enjoyed the pacing of the story! I am all for academic rivals to lovers, so this story had me hooked immediately。 I found the main character, Bel, to be so relatable, especially with her struggles to find her path in life。 The focus on women in STEM was also amazing! It really felt like conversations high schoolers would have。 Bel and Mateo’s transition from rivals to friends to lovers was EVERYTHING! I always enjoy all the cute, wholesome moments when they are beginning the shift from friends to lovers and this book had plenty! I also loved all of the secondary characters in the book! Overall, this was one of my favorite YA books I’ve read this year and I would recommend it to literally anyone and everyone who loves YA romance! I find it interesting to see the struggles that girls in STEM have to face and how they have to fight to prove their value in this world where some men dont think they belong。 Concerning Bel and Teo I just loved the fact that even if they're from two completly different worlds they find in eachother a person who understand them better than everyone else。 Their relationship and its development was awesome just to see them going from academic rivals to friends to lovers was so cute and fun !! It was beautiful to see this fragile young love blooming。And I really loved them separetly too they're so smart and kind !I also really could relate to Bel character and her struggles。 Some people have their all life figured it out (or at least have a idea of what their future will look like) but some of them just dont really know what to expect of their future (I'm one of them lol) I just recently figured it out that each person have her own path, her own rythm and that its not a competition。 Everything will come to place and at some point all of this will make sense (enventually lol)。 And thats why Bel character hit very close to home and I just loved to see her grow throughout the book and to see her become a independent and skillful character who just keep evolving despite all the difficulties she has to face as a girl in STEM。 So yeah I was such a good read and I'm so happy I was given this opportunity to discover it !! 。。。more

3。5 Stars!A super cute nerdy high school romance between Teo & Bel。 It has somewhat of an enemies to lovers/Academic Rivals trope。 It was a short book which didn't allow it to have a lot of depth with the characters but I really enjoyed it and was never bored。 Thank you to NetGalley, Alexene Farol Follmuth & Holiday House for allowing me to read this ARC。 3。5 Stars!A super cute nerdy high school romance between Teo & Bel。 It has somewhat of an enemies to lovers/Academic Rivals trope。 It was a short book which didn't allow it to have a lot of depth with the characters but I really enjoyed it and was never bored。 Thank you to NetGalley, Alexene Farol Follmuth & Holiday House for allowing me to read this ARC。 。。。more

3。5 stars, rounded up。 My Mechanical Romance is a really fun, cute YA romance with a heavy emphasis on STEM and robotics。 I loved every single conversation Bel had with Ms。 Voss and the lessons Bel learned from her。 Teo is super, super arrogant - soccer team captain, robotics captain, teacher favorite, with a wealthy family and absurd popularity。 But I love how he changes and humbles a bit after he meets Bel。 I also love how he pushes her to be better, to learn more。 I didn't like that they both 3。5 stars, rounded up。 My Mechanical Romance is a really fun, cute YA romance with a heavy emphasis on STEM and robotics。 I loved every single conversation Bel had with Ms。 Voss and the lessons Bel learned from her。 Teo is super, super arrogant - soccer team captain, robotics captain, teacher favorite, with a wealthy family and absurd popularity。 But I love how he changes and humbles a bit after he meets Bel。 I also love how he pushes her to be better, to learn more。 I didn't like that they both sort of feel pressured by themselves to have sex simply because they're dating。 That whole part of this book felt。。。 unnecessary。 *Steam: kisses, mention of make outs*Content: divorce, sexismThanks to NetGalley for my e-arc of this book。 Opinions here are my own。 。。。more

I wasn’t sure what I was expecting from this, maybe something cutesy and a feel-good book, and it totally was all that but it’s also more。 I guess it hit me deeper because like Bel at the start of the book, I’m also a little lost and not sure where I really want to be。 I’m older than the character but her sentiments still rang true to me。I also appreciated how the author painted the struggles of women in STEM, I may not be on that path myself, but I felt their struggles (as much as I could’ve wi I wasn’t sure what I was expecting from this, maybe something cutesy and a feel-good book, and it totally was all that but it’s also more。 I guess it hit me deeper because like Bel at the start of the book, I’m also a little lost and not sure where I really want to be。 I’m older than the character but her sentiments still rang true to me。I also appreciated how the author painted the struggles of women in STEM, I may not be on that path myself, but I felt their struggles (as much as I could’ve without experiencing it myself) through the words and scenes in the story。 I love how the women supported each other here and I deeply adored Ms。 Voss for pushing Bel。 The characters felt real and relatable, even the supposedly unlikeable ones, and it was a joy to watch and get to know them as they got to know themselves better。Aside from the characters’ growth, the romance between Bel and Teo was adorable, and I was cheering them on throughout。 Bel’s family struggles were also described in a way that allowed me to sympathize and understand how it feels to be in that position。 In addition, it was also fun hearing her mom offer Filipino dishes and speak a few Tagalog words, as a Filipino myself。This had been a very fun read and I hope to read more romance books from the author in the future!I received the ARC from Edelweiss+ 。。。more
