Skandar is 13 years old， lonely and motherless。 He is excited about taking the necessary tests to become a unicorn rider。 Wild unicorns are unicorns tare known as being bloodthirsty， and unpredictable besides being murderous， rotting and never dying。 Bonded unicorns are still bloodthirsty and can be unpredictable too but are tamer and loyal to their humans。 The unicorns live on an island。 The wild unicorns live forever， while bonded unicorns die when their human lives。 Skandar becomes a unicorn Skandar is 13 years old， lonely and motherless。 He is excited about taking the necessary tests to become a unicorn rider。 Wild unicorns are unicorns tare known as being bloodthirsty， and unpredictable besides being murderous， rotting and never dying。 Bonded unicorns are still bloodthirsty and can be unpredictable too but are tamer and loyal to their humans。 The unicorns live on an island。 The wild unicorns live forever， while bonded unicorns die when their human lives。 Skandar becomes a unicorn rider。 From the beginning ， Skandar must hide the stripe on his unicorn’s nose as his kind is not allowed。 Why？ As Skandar blackens the stripe， he must find out why there are only 4 “elements” instead of five。 The fifth one is discovered， Scoundrel is a spirit unicorn which is what Skandar’s unicorn is。 They have been outlawed。 His three friends stand beside him even though it could be destroyed if discovered。 At the end of each year， the unicorn trainees must complete a final and pass or they wil be eliminated。 Skandar hopes he passes the test。 Skandar must fight the Weaver who is stealing unicorns and people causing worry and pain。 Why？ The Weaver is building an army to take over the mainland and the island。 （The mainland has no unicorns。）。 Skandar knows that he and his unicorn must stop the Weaver’s plans。 To his shock， he knows who the Weaver is。 Will he be able to stop the Weaver？The author has written an unforgettable fantasy novel。 The unicorns in this first novel are beautiful。 None of the unicorns are like the unicorn books I’ve read。 Skandar finds himself — who he is。 Skandar learns he must trust himself which has not been always easy for him to do。 The story also spends time on grief and loss which is always difficult to talk about。 In this unexpected， suspenseful yet heartwarming story about Skandar and Scoundrel， I have been completely enthralled。 It is different and fantastic overall。 I can’t wait for the next volume！ Disclaimer: I received an arc of this book from the author/publisher from Netgalley。 I wasn’t obligated to write a favorable review or any review at all。 The opinions expressed are strictly my own。 。。。more

I nust live under a rock， because I have heard absolutely nothing about this story until I ran into it at Target， thought the cover looked pretty， and nabbed it， knowing full well that I was not the target audience。 And it was a really， really cute read。 A lot of the plot twists were expected， but in a "it would be cool if the author did this， I hope she does" sort of way。 There were no massive surprises， but a middle schooler that hasn't read thousands of books probably will be a little shocked I nust live under a rock， because I have heard absolutely nothing about this story until I ran into it at Target， thought the cover looked pretty， and nabbed it， knowing full well that I was not the target audience。 And it was a really， really cute read。 A lot of the plot twists were expected， but in a "it would be cool if the author did this， I hope she does" sort of way。 There were no massive surprises， but a middle schooler that hasn't read thousands of books probably will be a little shocked， in a good way。 I liked that aspect of the book。 The unicorns were a little goofy， especially the farting one and the weird racehorse names。 I would like to see a darker aspect of them in the future， along with the wild ones being scarier。 In this sense， Skandar reminded me of KOTLC more than Harry Potter- magic school， but it's a lighter tone， with more happy go lucky childish humor than the more serious undertone HP has。 Neither of these things are really wrong- just reader preference。 The final showdown with the villain was a bit anticlimactic as well- it was one of those moments where they could've just captured her and the book would've been a standalone， but they didn't and now we're here。 But I definitely do look forward to the sequel and seeing how else the author builds into this world。 。。。more

*4。5 Unicorns that are naturally bloodthirsty。 Different elemental powers。 A competition， found family， a mysterious enemy， and such a fun adventure！ The audiobook for this is absolutely INCREDIBLE！ This took me by surprise， even though it conventionally has all the tropes of popular middle grade series， I thought this was a great standout！ I can’t wait to see where this series goes because the character arcs and world building has SO MUCH POTENTIAL！

I actually really loved this。 The unicorns had such personality & each of the kids really had their own personality as well。 The book was well written and I laughed quite a bit。 The spirit abilities were really cool as well， along with the bonds for each of the riders and unicorns。 The only issue I had at any point was the Divergent trope- but I don’t over that fairly quickly by the end of the book。

Really wanted to love this。。 I just didn’t ‘get’ a lot of it。 What do the kids actually do all day？ What’s the obsession with ‘taking over the mainland’？ Other than eating animals for sustenance the unicorns don’t seem bloodthirsty at all？ Why does every kid on the mainland genuinely think they could be a rider when such a small amount are？

This YA fantasy definitely has a few Harry Potter vibes， but I’ve been wanting something similar without the the moral dilemma of supporting a transphobic author。 The story and characters are engaging and I appreciated the complexity of family and chosen family along with ideas of destiny and the elements that bind us in body， mind， and spirit。

I am not a fan of books that talk down to the reader and include a large amount of poop and fart jokes。 I do not find such jokes to be funny， they take me completely out of the story。 I find the authors handling of the unicorns in this story to be fascinating。 But a good core idea may fail to succeed if the author surrounds it with juvenile jokes and poor pacing。 The main character was not interesting， honestly I would have preferred the story to instead be about his sister。 She had so much more I am not a fan of books that talk down to the reader and include a large amount of poop and fart jokes。 I do not find such jokes to be funny， they take me completely out of the story。 I find the authors handling of the unicorns in this story to be fascinating。 But a good core idea may fail to succeed if the author surrounds it with juvenile jokes and poor pacing。 The main character was not interesting， honestly I would have preferred the story to instead be about his sister。 She had so much more going on with her and had so much more depth than her brother does。 I do nit mind the whole chosen one storyline， as long as the author makes the main character interesting， and surrounds such an plot cliché with cool ideas and world building。 This book had sprinkles of genius， but not enough to save it in the end。 。。。more
