Summary

It's the year 2044, and the real world has become an ugly place。 We're out of oil。 We've wrecked the climate。 Famine, poverty, and disease are widespread。

Like most of humanity, Wade Watts escapes this depressing reality by spending his waking hours jacked into the OASIS, a sprawling virtual utopia where you can be anything you want to be, where you can live and play and fall in love on any of ten thousand planets。 And like most of humanity, Wade is obsessed by the ultimate lottery ticket that lies concealed within this alternate reality: OASIS founder James Halliday, who dies with no heir, has promised that control of the OASIS - and his massive fortune - will go to the person who can solve the riddles he has left scattered throughout his creation。

For years, millions have struggled fruitlessly to attain this prize, knowing only that the riddles are based in the culture of the late twentieth century。 And then Wade stumbles onto the key to the first puzzle。 Suddenly, he finds himself pitted against thousands of competitors in a desperate race to claim the ultimate prize, a chase that soon takes on terrifying real-world dimensions - and that will leave both Wade and his world profoundly changed。

The book was so much better than the movie and I actually quite enjoyed the movie! I’d read and enjoy again and again and again!

This book was the equivalent of nostalgia from the icons, books, movies, music growing up- the comfy chair with your favorite snack and cozy blanket。 I loved the detail out into the elaborate treasure hunt and blurred lines of reality with cyber space。 Wil Wheaton was a fantastic narrator! Loved it so much I sped through the book!

*3。75That was so much fuuuuuun! Honestly, a lot of those references went right over my head but you could really tell that the author is a true nerd and loves video games。 The man is PASSIONATE!There were times that it was overtly specific and didn't add to the plot but overall it was still a great adventure ~futuristic~ story。 *3。75That was so much fuuuuuun! Very different。 Not to sure as to where this was but a lousy distopian story。 I was so happy that this was a really good lil book that will always have a spot on my shelf。

When I first started this book, I didn't know if I was going to finish it。 The beginning is very bogged down with complicated background and world building that should have been given in smaller doses throughout the book。 But once the games began, I was hooked。 There was great mental health representation including depression, social anxiety and suicidal thoughts。 It was full of action and pop culture references that bring on full 80's nostalgia。 It is probably best to have a good grasp of 80's When I first started this book, I didn't know if I was going to finish it。 The beginning is very bogged down with complicated background and world building that should have been given in smaller doses throughout the book。 But once the games began, I was hooked。 There was great mental health representation including depression, social anxiety and suicidal thoughts。 It was full of action and pop culture references that bring on full 80's nostalgia。 It is probably best to have a good grasp of 80's pop culture because as a 90's baby there were still somethings I didn't get。 P。S。 If you read this book never watch the movie。 It's horrible and doesn't follow the book at all。 。。。more

I saw the movie and then I read the book。 The book is nothing like the movie, its the same idea but the challenges are different! Its the perfect book for nerds around the world and if you love the 80’s。 Tip of advice: whenever they mention a song play it while you read and its an incredible experience!

Again, this is not my usual type, but I did somewhat enjoy this book, once I got over the initial shock。。。and it does leave one with a valuable lesson

I would have REALLY LOVED it if it wasn't for our Roblox, metaverse, etc。Unfortunately, knowing all those made this book feel more like a non-fiction documentary😂, not SF。Good job to Wil Wheaton, btw!!! This was an amazing balance of Sci-fi, romance, and fantasy。

Aaron

Great world and an interesting protagonist。 The book contains plenty of links to pop culture that will delight you。 The story is just a little slow at times。

Rachel Ste。Croix

Great character development and captivating the whole way through。

Winter Rose

Author’s way of storytelling is so good, I suggest you join NovelStar’s writing competition on April。

Jennifer

This was very meh for me。 In contrast to the legion of fans who loved the pop culture references, I found them to be cheap and distracting when taken in aggregate。 Pandering to nostalgia is not a good plot spine。

I actually really enjoyed this book。 It's not the best piece of literature I've ever read but I genuinely couldn't wait to find out what happened next。 As a massive geek myself I got just about all of the references in the book。 I eve, quite proudly new of the Rush's album 2112 and knew all the Rush references in the book, sad that isn't it! I also got a kick out of the constant D & D references and I knew of every game and every film mentioned as I've watched all and played most of the games, o I actually really enjoyed this book。 It's not the best piece of literature I've ever read but I genuinely couldn't wait to find out what happened next。 As a massive geek myself I got just about all of the references in the book。 I eve, quite proudly new of the Rush's album 2112 and knew all the Rush references in the book, sad that isn't it! I liked this a whole lot less after the second reading。

Really fun and engaging。 I liked how it softly touched on some bigger social issues。 I was not a fan of the relationship between Wade and Arty, and the way that played out, hence the 4 instead of 5 stars。

Because I raised my kids during the years where the book references, it brought back tons of tons of memories。 I really liked the book it truly is for geeks。。

Rated this 3 stars initially because I thought I must have just missed some brilliant part of this book that everyone seemed to see。。。 Well I came back and changed my rating to 2stars after with every day that passes I understand the hype that this book got even less

What an awesome book。 Listened in 3 evenings and every day was waiting till I can get back to it。 In general it felt like a teen version of Labyrinth of Reflections by Lukyanenko which is one my favourite books。

Robert

First book I’ve ever read out of pure self-interest so it gets an obvious five stars from me, and of course I still thoroughly enjoyed it especially since it was about a VR world and also that it had tons of references to old tech, games, and movies。

Laura Gardner

Entertaining and fun on audio!

Rating: 4。5Wow。 What a ride。 I’m usually never a Sci-fi reader but this time, that appears to have changed。 What an amazing storyline and down-to-earth, relatable characters。 I love the fact that you’re following the protagonist through his quest, and his missions on finding Halliday’s egg。 It’s also a very real story。 We’re obsessed with our phones and with the internet。 The world they live in, where everyone escapes to the internet world, too scared of reality, is something I never want to see Rating: 4。5Wow。 What a ride。 I’m usually never a Sci-fi reader but this time, that appears to have changed。 What an amazing storyline and down-to-earth, relatable characters。 I love the fact that you’re following the protagonist through his quest, and his missions on finding Halliday’s egg。 It’s also a very real story。 We’re obsessed with our phones and with the internet。 The world they live in, where everyone escapes to the internet world, too scared of reality, is something I never want to see happen in our world, and somehow it’s already happeningThe only bad thing I have to say is that I was a little bummed I couldn’t guess with the characters once some clues came up, or the riddles。 In order to solve them you had to have this unrealistic 80s knowledge, which Z luckily had。 I guess it would’ve been more fun for me if I could guess along。 Also some paragraphs were too much nerdy 80s data knowledge, and that kind of bored me out。 Oh well。 This book opened up my mind to what can happen when you lose yourself in a false world, a simulation。 It’s horrible yet so beautiful。 That’s the best way I can describe it I guess。 However, WOW。 What a f***ing book! 。。。more
