Summary

Winner, Scott O'Dell Award for Historical Fiction! The New York Times bestselling author of Dread Nation makes her middle grade debut with a sweeping tale of the ghosts of our past that won't stay buried, starring an unforgettable girl named Ophie。

Ophelia Harrison used to live in a small house in the Georgia countryside。 But that was before the night in November 1922, and the cruel act that took her home and her father from her。 Which was the same night that Ophie learned she can see ghosts。

Now Ophie and her mother are living in Pittsburgh with relatives they barely know。 In the hopes of earning enough money to get their own place, Mama has gotten Ophie a job as a maid in the same old manor house where she works。

Daffodil Manor, like the wealthy Caruthers family who owns it, is haunted by memories and prejudices of the past--and, as Ophie discovers, ghosts as well。 Ghosts who have their own loves and hatreds and desires, ghosts who have wronged others and ghosts who have themselves been wronged。 And as Ophie forms a friendship with one spirit whose life ended suddenly and unjustly, she wonders if she might be able to help--even as she comes to realize that Daffodil Manor may hold more secrets than she bargained for。

I like seeing a child learn the ways of the world through supernatural or mystical means。 I do enjoy when a book is more fast-paced than this one though。

Beautiful, sad, haunting, and gripping story。 Perfect for MG audiences and older。

I loved the combination of fantasy/ghost-story, mystery, and historical fiction。 It all came together beautifully at the end, and was very well written。 The plot twists were, of course, surprising, but not too much and not in a bad way。

This book was so interesting。 I don’t know what it is about children solving the biggest mysteries their town has that really captivates the reader to see how it gets done and who is actually involved。 A 12 year old girl who is able to see dead people and learned when a bunch of racists came to burn down her family home by her Dad’s ghosts forewarning her。 Fast forward to know working for a white family with her mother and the ghosts haunting the home because their spirit can’t move it。 The writ This book was so interesting。 I don’t know what it is about children solving the biggest mysteries their town has that really captivates the reader to see how it gets done and who is actually involved。 A 12 year old girl who is able to see dead people and learned when a bunch of racists came to burn down her family home by her Dad’s ghosts forewarning her。 Fast forward to know working for a white family with her mother and the ghosts haunting the home because their spirit can’t move it。 The writing was well written and the audio was an enjoyment to listen to。 。。。more

I loved this book! My first Justina Ireland and I hope she keeps writing middle grade。 Maybe even a sequel to this one? I liked the name of Daffodil Manor。 The descriptions were great and I really felt like I was THERE。 The ghosts were not too scary and even friendly! (CLASSROOM)

She has such a big heart! She's smart, and kind, though in the privacy of her own thoughts, she has her own opinions。 The other characters were all well written, each with their own personalities。 The ghosts were all interesting, and learning about them was a fun part of the story。 The mystery that Ophie unravels came together very nicely at the end。One warning, there is blatant racist language and actions。 There is no sugar coating what Ophie had to deal with on a daily basis。 There were rules both written and unwritten for how black people had to live in 1922 - and today。 Also, I listened on audio, and the narrator was excellent。 。。。more

When Ophie witnesses her father's murder in 1922 Georgia, she learns she can see ghosts。 So when her mother moves them to Pittsburgh to live with relatives while they both work as housekeepers for a wealthy family, she connects with the ghost of a former employee of the house and promises to solve the mystery of what happened to her。 The sad events of the opening and Ophie's circumstances are compounded by the sad stories of the ghosts, but tempered by an even tone and somewhat upbeat ending。 Th When Ophie witnesses her father's murder in 1922 Georgia, she learns she can see ghosts。 So when her mother moves them to Pittsburgh to live with relatives while they both work as housekeepers for a wealthy family, she connects with the ghost of a former employee of the house and promises to solve the mystery of what happened to her。 The sad events of the opening and Ophie's circumstances are compounded by the sad stories of the ghosts, but tempered by an even tone and somewhat upbeat ending。 The ghost story is good and not too spooky while illustrating the reach of racism and the lengths some will go to because of it。 。。。more

An excellent little middle grade novel set in the 1920s—it’s got ghosts, it’s got mystery, it’s got history! It also has a light enough touch to address serious, distressing topics without making them either too trite or too schadenfreude-inducing, which is a great success on its own and even more impressive considering the book’s target audience (kids tend to know when they’re being handled, and Ophie’s Ghosts avoids that magnificently)。A great choice for kids (and adults!) looking for a little An excellent little middle grade novel set in the 1920s—it’s got ghosts, it’s got mystery, it’s got history! A wonderful novel that is both a haunted house story, a mystery and an exploration of the haunting nature of racial violence in America。 I loved how this was also a story about a child navigating grief and her understanding of death as she helps the spirits of the dead。

Atmospheric, complex, and so well-written。 I don't want to spoil too much, but I will say that Ophie's Ghosts is a one of those deeply nuanced books that has a beautiful ending。 Not a happy ending, exactly; not quite a bittersweet one either。 More like a fulfilling one。 This is a really, truly excellent novel。 Atmospheric, complex, and so well-written。 I don't want to spoil too much, but I will say that Ophie's Ghosts is a one of those deeply nuanced books that has a beautiful ending。 Not a happy ending, exactly; not quite a bittersweet one either。 More like a fulfilling one。 This is a really, truly excellent novel。 。。。more

HELLO, OPHIE! What a fun book and a great story on top of it all。 Previously I have only read Dread Nation by Justina Ireland so I was excited when I saw she had this MG horror book in her repertoire as well。 It's a little bit of historical and paranormal all in one。 There's lots of heart and emotion in here, too。 Ophie is kind of a cross between Melinda Gordon from Ghost Whisper and Odd Thomas。。。 but so much more and has her own story to tell and experiences to share。 This is so good and I real HELLO, OPHIE! A historical with ghosts showing Pittsburgh (and a bit of Georgia) in the early 20th century, as Black Americans pushed for the vote and communities grew in many northern states。 Ophie gets just the right amount of agency -- she's still under her mother's control, as well as all the unseen rules for Blacks living near White Americans, but she has her own opinions and is the one who makes a difference in the end。 There's a background understanding of colorism and a matter-of-fact understanding of A historical with ghosts showing Pittsburgh (and a bit of Georgia) in the early 20th century, as Black Americans pushed for the vote and communities grew in many northern states。 Ophie gets just the right amount of agency -- she's still under her mother's control, as well as all the unseen rules for Blacks living near White Americans, but she has her own opinions and is the one who makes a difference in the end。 There's a background understanding of colorism and a matter-of-fact understanding of "passing" which ends up being a plot point and is also a fascinating part of history。 。。。more

This is such a masterful combination of historical fiction, paranormal/ghost story, and mystery。 I don't know how Ireland does it all without feeling like the book is overstuffed, but she does! I think this will be a great entrance into historical fiction for kids who often find that genre boring。 This is such a masterful combination of historical fiction, paranormal/ghost story, and mystery。 I don't know how Ireland does it all without feeling like the book is overstuffed, but she does! It's a tall order, writing a book about the ghosts of people who've died violent deaths, racism in the decades after Emancipation, classism, and child labor and making it all both interesting and age-appropriate for middle-graders, but Ireland does a decent job。 The heavy topics sometimes feel a little glossed over, but the ghost story is engaging and seems a solid strategy for introducing some of these big real-world concepts to a young audience。 It's a tall order, writing a book about the ghosts of people who've died violent deaths, racism in the decades after Emancipation, classism, and child labor and making it all both interesting and age-appropriate for middle-graders, but Ireland does a decent job。 The heavy topics sometimes feel a little glossed over, but the ghost story is engaging and seems a solid strategy for introducing some of these big real-world concepts to a young audience。 。。。more
