Summary

This is what they deserve。 They wanted me to be a monster。 I will be the worst monster they ever created。

Fifteen-year-old Sloane can incinerate an enemy at will—she is a Scion, a descendant of the ancient Orisha gods。

Under the Lucis’ brutal rule, her identity means her death if her powers are discovered。 But when she is forcibly conscripted into the Lucis army on her fifteenth birthday, Sloane sees a new opportunity: to overcome the bloody challenges of Lucis training, and destroy them from within。

Sloane rises through the ranks and gains strength but, in doing so, risks something greater: losing herself entirely, and becoming the very monster that she ahbors。

Following one girl’s journey of magic, injustice, power, and revenge, this deeply felt and emotionally charged debut from Deborah Falaye, inspired by Yoruba-Nigerian mythology, is a magnetic combination of A Song of Wraiths and Ruin and Daughter of Smoke and Bone that will utterly thrill and capture readers。

Young Adult Fantasy about the Orishas with Shango as the key Orisha is literally what I’ve been waiting for in a book, but this book severely let me down。 This book is really more of a 2。5, but I’ll round up to a 3 simply because of the breathtaking cover。 The story itself features a 15 year old which is well into High School, yet there are parts of her development that felt very juvenile。 I would be okay with that if the story itself didn’t read as a vivid and violent new adult story。 I also fe Young Adult Fantasy about the Orishas with Shango as the key Orisha is literally what I’ve been waiting for in a book, but this book severely let me down。 This book is really more of a 2。5, but I’ll round up to a 3 simply because of the breathtaking cover。 The story itself features a 15 year old which is well into High School, yet there are parts of her development that felt very juvenile。 I would be okay with that if the story itself didn’t read as a vivid and violent new adult story。 I also felt frustrated by most of the book, but it took the cake while the climax was building。 It felt very much 45% filler, 30% story building, and only 25% actual story, plot, and development which is grossly unfair。 I’m not sure if this book was originally supposed to be just one book then was stretched into two, but I would’ve much preferred a longer more solid one book story。 。。。more

Firstly this is an absolutely brutal book。 A fantastic debut amd I'll be interested in seeing more of what this author has to offer down the line。That being said however I was kind of torn as to what rating to give this book。 Because on one hand there were absolutely elements that I liked and parts of the world the felt unique and harsh。 However throughout the entire thing i just could not shake the feeling that I had read exact elements or something almost exactly like it before。 I dont know ex Firstly this is an absolutely brutal book。 A fantastic debut amd I'll be interested in seeing more of what this author has to offer down the line。That being said however I was kind of torn as to what rating to give this book。 Because on one hand there were absolutely elements that I liked and parts of the world the felt unique and harsh。 However throughout the entire thing i just could not shake the feeling that I had read exact elements or something almost exactly like it before。 I dont know exactly what books I wpuld compare it to but beyond the brutality of what was going on there was not a whole bunch that felt unique to me。 Characters do not act their age in this amd although that is pretty understandable given the circumstances they find themselves there's just one thing every once in a while that feels realky out of place character wise while ypure reading。 The romance in this is also realky poorly handled makes utterly no sense and even has a more frustrating non senscical twist at the end。 The twist at the end is realky what kind of wrecked this book and wanting continue the series for me。 Multible new names for Characters got tossed around with the old ones all while stuff was being poorly explained and I got hopelessly confused。 The math also isn't mathing with the maj caharcters abilities and the book seems to realky have trouble deciding on weather or not the mother had fire abilities or was a normal person because ei sweat there are multible plotholes that say contradictory things and I just ended up with that dissy feeling when you spin in a bunch of circles wayy too fast。 All in all and I am fully aware that was a pretty negative rant I do think this was a good book and there is definitely things like self harm that are handled really well。 There is also a lot of value that someone else cpuld potentially get out of giving thjs book a read。 That person was not me but despite what I said earlier this is still a book I would recommend。 。。。more

I was so dang frustrated by this book the whole time。 It has been a hot minute since I finished it, but I will do my best to explain why。Sloane is a Scion, a descendant of the Orisha gods, with the ability to summon fire at will。 But she must keep her abilities hidden, for her country has been under the Lucis’s control her entire life。 The Lucis went to war with Nagea (Sloane’s country) and conquered them using their advanced technology, then banned all things connecting Yoruba to their gods – w I was so dang frustrated by this book the whole time。 It has been a hot minute since I finished it, but I will do my best to explain why。Sloane is a Scion, a descendant of the Orisha gods, with the ability to summon fire at will。 But she must keep her abilities hidden, for her country has been under the Lucis’s control her entire life。 The Lucis went to war with Nagea (Sloane’s country) and conquered them using their advanced technology, then banned all things connecting Yoruba to their gods – which includes those who possess the gods’ magic。 But the war isn’t over。 The Shadow Rebels continue to fight in the Sahl desert, so the Lucis have established a draft on children to expand their ruthless military。 When Sloane is drafted, she’s not sure how she’s going to keep hiding her power, but she wants to find out what happened to her mother and the draft may be her only chance。 But what she finds out is bigger than she could have imagined, and she must decide how far she is willing to go to destroy the Lucis from the inside out。I think my synopsis is a great place to start because I’m still confused about the world-building in this book。 It was never fully explained, and I don't understand how the politics or the daily lives of people in the book work。 The pacing only makes this worse; the first few chapters have simultaneously too many plot points and not enough exposition, which made me overwhelmed and very confused for a while。 It also disconnected me from Sloane emotionally because I didn’t understand the plot well enough to empathize with her。 Many times, Sloane also overexplains her emotions in her internal dialogue, which makes everything ring false for the first third of the book。The romance started out as a highlight。 I guessed who the love interest was, but it really isn't obvious so I wasn’t sure for a while。 I really liked the build-up of their relationship, I felt it was really well-done。 Until the guy’s character did a complete turn-around and he became someone totally different – I guess to justify the enemies-to-lovers element, except it didn’t need to be justified?? Very confused and frustrated about that, as well。I think I could go on for a while about little things that annoyed me too。 This fantasy just felt poorly written to me。 It could have been so freaking good, but too many things didn’t work for me。The best part of the whole novel was the FIRE ending!! (literally lol… iykyk)。 But seriously, the ending, while not flawless, was really engaging, emotional, and absolutely insane in the best way。 I’m frustrated we don't get to see what happens after the ending since the book synopsis implies plot points that never happen, BUT I don’t need to get into that。I hate writing reviews like this, I really do。 And I know others loved this book and felt like it was a great fantasy, so it’s possible it’s just a me thing。 But in my opinion, there are other YA fantasy novels, new and older alike, that are more well-executed。*This review will be published on Under the Covers book blog soon!
