Summary

A moving picture book debut about depression, sensory awareness, and the power of listening, from psychologist and author of Teaching Kids to be Kind。

Coen is having a sniffling, sighing, sobbing kind of day。

His family thinks they know how to cheer him up。 His dad wants to go outside and play, Mom tells her funniest joke, and his little sister shares her favorite teddy。 Nothing helps。 But one by one, they get quiet and begin to listen。 After some time, space, and reassurance, Coen is able to show them what he needs。

With poignant text and stunning illustrations, A Blue Kind of Day explores how depression might feel in the body and shows us how to support the people we love with patience, care, and empathy。

Depression。 Would pair perfectly with The Rabbit Listened。 Also other SEL/mental health books: Whimsy's Heavy Things, Brave Molly, When Sadness Is At Your Door, I'm Sad, Jack's Worry, Small Things。 Depression。 Would pair perfectly with The Rabbit Listened。 Also other SEL/mental health books: Whimsy's Heavy Things, Brave Molly, When Sadness Is At Your Door, I'm Sad, Jack's Worry, Small Things。 。。。more

I like this topic of emotional management, and how families can help if someone is feeling poorly。 The illustrations of all the different family members are heartwarming and have lots of personality in the physicality。 I love how the family members are so dedicated to helping, even though their initial efforts don't resolve the bad feelings right away。 I like this topic of emotional management, and how families can help if someone is feeling poorly。 The illustrations of all the different family members are heartwarming and have lots of personality in the physicality。 I love how the family members are so dedicated to helping, even though their initial efforts don't resolve the bad feelings right away。 。。。more

This felt like a book that teachers who feature a lot of social-emotional learning texts are going to enjoy。 It might not get signed out much by students (at least at first)。 However, for teachers who want a book that will help them talk about depression, feeling sad, and how to help when people in your family are going through this sort of thing, this book will fit。

A Blue Kind of Day is an important book in the canon of children's picture books about mental health。 This book deals very specifically with depression and does so with so much grace and dignity。 What Rachel Tomlinson does so perfectly in this book is help to establish what depression looks and feels like, while also establishing the need to see feelings as neither good nor bad, but messages that our brains are sending us。 As an adult who struggles with depression, I found this book incredibly a A Blue Kind of Day is an important book in the canon of children's picture books about mental health。 This book deals very specifically with depression and does so with so much grace and dignity。 What Rachel Tomlinson does so perfectly in this book is help to establish what depression looks and feels like, while also establishing the need to see feelings as neither good nor bad, but messages that our brains are sending us。 As an adult who struggles with depression, I found this book incredibly affirming and uplifting despite the heavy topic。 。。。more

I received an electronic ARC from Kokila through Edelweiss+。Tomlinson sensitively shows readers what depression can look like。 Coen describes what is happening in his body and mind as he curls up and wants to be wrapped up in his blanket in bed。 His family tries a variety of activities to change his mood and then settles in to show love and support quietly。 Coen feels their support and finds himself moving from this mood to begin interacting with them again。 A realistic look at how depression af I received an electronic ARC from Kokila through Edelweiss+。Tomlinson sensitively shows readers what depression can look like。 Coen describes what is happening in his body and mind as he curls up and wants to be wrapped up in his blanket in bed。 His family tries a variety of activities to change his mood and then settles in to show love and support quietly。 Coen feels their support and finds himself moving from this mood to begin interacting with them again。 A realistic look at how depression affects life。 The references to the color blue will resonate with younger readers。 Using blues in the background of the illustrations shows readers how emotions are changing; they may not consciously notice this but it sets the tone for the text。 Information for adults is included at the end of the book。 This is one for families as they acknowledge that every member has emotions/moods and has to process them for themselves and in community with the family。 。。。more

Written and illustrated with sensitivity, A Blue Kind of Day addresses depression without minimization。 Like Cori Doerrfeld's The Rabbit Listened, a series of suggestions to cheer up are made by a young child's family。 However, a breakthrough happens when the family listens with patience and gives space for the young child。 Nuances like writing the child's inability to accurately communicate their feelings are particularly poignant。 A digital advanced reader copy was reviewed。 Written and illustrated with sensitivity, A Blue Kind of Day addresses depression without minimization。 Like Cori Doerrfeld's The Rabbit Listened, a series of suggestions to cheer up are made by a young child's family。 However, a breakthrough happens when the family listens with patience and gives space for the young child。 Nuances like writing the child's inability to accurately communicate their feelings are particularly poignant。 A digital advanced reader copy was reviewed。 。。。more
