Summary

This paperback junior novelization retells the exciting story of Disney and Pixar's Turning Red--coming to Disney+ on March 11th, 2022! Also includes an eight-page insert with images from the film!

In Turning Red, Mei Lee is a confident, dorky thirteen-year-old torn between staying her mother's dutiful daughter and the chaos of adolescence。 And as if changes to her interests, relationships, and body weren't enough, whenever she gets too excited (which for a teenager is practically ALWAYS), she "poofs" into a giant red panda! Turning Red is directed by Academy Award-winner Domee Shi (Pixar short Bao), produced by Lindsey Collins and coming to Disney+ on March 11th, 2022。 The feature film is all retold in this digest junior novelization that's perfect for girls and boys ages 6 to 9。 Also comes with a full-color insert featuring scenes from the film!

One of my favorite movies and the book was just as good! I've seen the movie 6 times and I know I'll revisit this book too! Meilin is such an amazing character and I'm just in love with the entire story。 "People have all kinds of sides to them。 And some sides are messy。 The point isn't to push the bad stuff away。 It's to make room for it, live with it。" One of my favorite movies and the book was just as good! UPDATE: I saw the movie today, and I don't know which is worse: the complete erasure of actual Canadian identity, especially our country's First Nations cultures, or the twerking and continuity errors。 Anybody who thinks that this is what Canada is or ever was like needs to have a Corner Gas or North Of 60 marathon and eat some Old Dutch potato chips。A book based on the first Disney Pixar movie to be set here in my country, Canada! I never thought I'd see the day。。。 but I don't know if the creators have actually ever lived in Toronto。。。? I have, and it was definitely not the bubblegum pop rainbow-land portrayed in this story (even less so now; your average private property can cost more than putting three students through medical school in Toronto these days! Scary!)。 Anyway, it's an obvious United States trying to understand Canadian culture kind of thing, but setting that aside, this novelization is a decent book for younger readers。 I've not yet seen the movie, as it hasn't been released here, but the book is a fun coming-of-age story about a girl and her friends growing up and finding themselves。Mei Lee also has some The Secret World of Alex Mack syndrome going on, except in her case, rather than her face glowing bright yellow when she gets nervous like Alex, she "poofs" into a giant red panda, the result of an ancient lineage connected to her Chinese roots。 This turns her hair red, shocks her friends, and happens at the most inopportune moments, whether she's awkwardly looking at a boy she likes or trying to get ready for school。 Mei's Chinese-Canadian parents try to help her understand her new situation, but ultimately, as embarrassing for her as it can be, it might not be all bad。 Being thirteen years old also comes with great friends, an upcoming boy band they can't wait to see, making it through school, and learning more about her heritage。Including colour photo inserts from Turning Red, and also being sold in both paperback and hardcover format, this movie novel will be a great addition to the shelves of readers who love Turning Red, not just as a collector's item, but also as a good story about an average girl in a larger-than-life unreal predicament。 。。。more
