Summary

*Named Book of the Week by Maria Shriver’s The Sunday Paper*

“If you’ve spent the last couple years untangling yourself from Hustle Culture, and trying to find who you are outside of your achievements and productivity, then we've got just the book for you。 Fans of Untamed, this is your next favorite read。” —POPSUGAR

“I’ve fallen in love with Jamie’s words and how she so effortlessly can make us feel united with them。 She has a true gift of helping us realize that all of our ‘human’ moments are what make us so special。 She is a real light in this world。” —Lucy Hale, Award-Winning Actress from Pretty Little LiarsThe Hating Game, and more

Blending memoir, sharp social insights, and unique practical tools, author Jamie Varon is your guide to radical contentment—a satisfied life outside the bounds of societal expectations。

Too many of us are waiting for our lives to begin, putting our happiness on layaway for some future version where it all lines up, when we’ve accomplished it all, when we have the perfect career, bodies, partners, and when our lives finally feel “good enough。” But what is good enough? Who gets to decide? And when do we ever reach it?

Jamie takes a sharp, incisive look at the industries that are constantly telling us to do more, be more, and keep striving, pushing, and hustling—and shows you how to radically opt out of societal conditioning

We’ve learned to be terrified of contentment, thinking it will lead us to complacency。 Yet, being content in a world that profits off our dissatisfaction is not complacency。 It’s revolutionary。

Radically Content makes the case for a new framework of living。 Exploring themes like guilt, I’ll be happy when…, anxiety, settling, control, healing, shame, self-trust, and being our own worst enemies—not only will you unlearn the dogma of that discontent, but learn practical tools to create a more satisfied life for yourself, including:

Cultivating real self-trust
Defining your own version of “success”
Living with intention
Rewriting your personal narrative
Creating consistent and healing rituals

Packed with revelatory insights, Radically Content is an exhale。 A respite from the chaos of our current world。 A calm place to land when you’ve had enough with trying to be enough。

This book was the perfect mental reset I needed。 Jamie breaks down the myths about finding happiness that society conditions us to believe and provides actionable steps on how to opt out of hustle culture and into our own joy。 I could not put it down!

I have a rocky relationship with self-help books。 I’ve followed Jamie on Instagram for a while and since I enjoy hearing her perspective on various topics, I thought I’d give her new book a shot。Out of all of the self-help and personal development books I’ve read, I think this one is the most relatable。 It’s tackles capitalist-enforced hustle culture and the manipulative, toxic traits of our go-go-go, image-obsessed society。 Jamie is honest and vulnerable, and I appreciate her willingness to sha I have a rocky relationship with self-help books。 I’ve followed Jamie on Instagram for a while and since I enjoy hearing her perspective on various topics, I thought I’d give her new book a shot。Out of all of the self-help and personal development books I’ve read, I think this one is the most relatable。 It’s tackles capitalist-enforced hustle culture and the manipulative, toxic traits of our go-go-go, image-obsessed society。 Jamie is honest and vulnerable, and I appreciate her willingness to share her story and experiences with the world。 Also, I appreciate that Jamie disclosed her personal privilege at the beginning of the book, which is so important and generally lacking in this genre。Much of this book is comprised of information and advice that readily exists at our fingertips。 It’s not new or original, and that can often feel a little boring, lackluster, and frustrating while reading, especially when there’s not enough actionable steps on how to reach that point。 Jaime isn’t a therapist, so I don’t hold that against the book but…still。 It feels a bit like fluff after a while。 However, I still think this book would be great for new readers of the self-help genre。Thank you to NetGalley and Rock Point for the advanced reader copy! 。。。more

This may be taken as cynacle, but the themes and advice in this book are often a little idealistic。 It fights hustle culture, but seems a little "hustle towards joy now! Happy now!"。。 As much as I'd love to be, I can't be happy all the time, but really believe it's not achievable - and might make readers judge themselves harder。 What I did like, however, was the encouragement to shake off comparisons to others in pursuit of happiness。 A great reminder, and Jamie's personal stories were always en This may be taken as cynacle, but the themes and advice in this book are often a little idealistic。 It fights hustle culture, but seems a little "hustle towards joy now!

I really wanted to like this book but it just fell flat。 The advice is (mostly) good but I could not get into the writing style at all。 I would have to force myself to focus but inevitably, my mind would wander after each paragraph。 The cover is pretty though so there's something to like。 I really wanted to like this book but it just fell flat。 The advice is (mostly) good but I could not get into the writing style at all。 I would have to force myself to focus but inevitably, my mind would wander after each paragraph。 The cover is pretty though so there's something to like。 。。。more

3。75 ⭐️ I found this book super easy to follow and understand and to read。 It was eye opening and a pleasant read for my first self help type book。 This is a book I will recommend as a great stepping stone to beginning a self help/self improvement journey。 Jamie Varon has an enjoyable writing style to read。 #RadicallyContent #NetGalley

3。5 stars。 Thanks to the publisher via NetGalley for the eARC of this book。Self-help is a tricky genre。 I think it is likely to be helpful to go into this one expecting more of a pep talk than actionable advice。 In Radically Content, Jamie Varon does a good job of identifying what it is about the world we live in that makes us chronically dissatisfied with our own lives, and the opportunities that can open up when we reject the little voice in our head that tells us that sad and unfulfilled is t 3。5 stars。 Thanks to the publisher via NetGalley for the eARC of this book。Self-help is a tricky genre。 I think it is likely to be helpful to go into this one expecting more of a pep talk than actionable advice。 In Radically Content, Jamie Varon does a good job of identifying what it is about the world we live in that makes us chronically dissatisfied with our own lives, and the opportunities that can open up when we reject the little voice in our head that tells us that sad and unfulfilled is the way we should aspire to be。 Whilst this doesn't go hugely in depth, I identified quite uncannily with a lot of Varon's experiences and the thought patterns she found were making her unhappy。 What it doesn't quite get into is the practical steps one must take to unlearn these behaviours - which, in a way, is fine - Varon isn't a therapist。 Whilst it wasn't necessarily entirely 'radical', I came away from this feeling motivated and empowered, which is what I think it set out to do! 。。。more

I adore Jamie soooo much。 Her writing always leaves me with my heart feeling full & with the knowing that choosing to live life the way I want (instead of what society deems acceptable) is the way to go。 Self-trust is the biggest discussion point of this book, but it’s also filled with discussion on healing & unlearning。Jamie doesn’t want you to flip your life upside down to reach all these impossible self-help standards。 She wants you to look inward, figure out what *you* want, and then live in I adore Jamie soooo much。 Her writing always leaves me with my heart feeling full & with the knowing that choosing to live life the way I want (instead of what society deems acceptable) is the way to go。 Self-trust is the biggest discussion point of this book, but it’s also filled with discussion on healing & unlearning。Jamie doesn’t want you to flip your life upside down to reach all these impossible self-help standards。 She wants you to look inward, figure out what *you* want, and then live in the way that leads you there。 。。。more

One of the things I love about Jamie’s writing is how easy it is to relate to。 I never feel like I’m being talked down to or like she has all the answers and I am some acolyte。 She knows what she’s talking about, but this book feels like she’s gently handed you your favorite drink and is walking you down the beach telling you about it。 This book feels less like having something explained to me and more like being shown a path and how to get to the answer myself。 It’s supportive without be prescr One of the things I love about Jamie’s writing is how easy it is to relate to。 I never feel like I’m being talked down to or like she has all the answers and I am some acolyte。 She knows what she’s talking about, but this book feels like she’s gently handed you your favorite drink and is walking you down the beach telling you about it。 This book feels less like having something explained to me and more like being shown a path and how to get to the answer myself。 It’s supportive without be prescriptive, honest without being brutal, inviting without being cult-like。 If you’re feeling off about things in your life, this is the book you need。 。。。more

Jamie’s book is such a breath of fresh air in a world that typically rewards MORE, MORE, MORE。 I love how she mixes in her personal anecdotes and learnings with gentle but firm reminders to find joy in the moment。 More than anything, I love her writing — I’ve followed her through many iterations of her career, and her voice is getting stronger and more inspirational at every turn。 A true testament that her radical contentment mantras and practices work! ❤️

Pressing this beautiful book closed after reading what felt like an awakening was an experience I’ll never forget。 Every word Jamie Varon crafted lets the reader know that she “sees you。” After every few sentences, I shook my head in disbelief, thinking, “that’s exactly it!” But, what is “it,” exactly?

“It” is the design of the human experience displayed to everyone as an accessible and proper path to a lifetime of happiness and wealth。 For example, you earn a degree, find a great paying job, get married, buy a massive house, have kids, maintain a flattering figure and never go into debt throughout the process。 This design follows the path of what we know as “success”—achieving prosperity and happiness。 And, if at any moment you as a human do not complete one of the above, you are not successful。 Jamie Varon breaks down this dissatisfied world by making the reader aware of what they should unlearn about societal norms and whom the world told the human race to be。 In this first part of the book, you find you come face-to-face with your inner child who might have wanted to be an artist, writer, or gymnast but thought it was too big a dream to reach。 You’ll recognize through Jamie’s words that there is no time limit on what you want to achieve in life。 The achievement has nothing to do with how others perceive your version of success。 There is always a better artist, writer, or gymnast。 Perfection is nonexistent。 Giving up before trying in fear of failure does exist, however。 Fortunately, success holds various definitions for each individual。 What I deem successful in achieving in my life does not necessarily define the word’s meaning in yours。 Once you start reading Radically Content, sit with it。 Bask in each sentence。 Immerse your spirit in the creative juices that will flow through your mind, body, and soul。 Allow your past self to make acquaintances with your current self。 Forgive each other。 Then, allow yourself to dig deep until you hear the frictional force between the matchbox and the stick it once housed, light up in blazing heat to set a spark inside you。 Reread this book, again and again, to keep that fire lit inside you。 Let it burn for the rest of your life; never dim your light again。 。。。more

Jamie Varon's book is beautiful inside out。 The book contains sections that start with her own journey and how she moved from a life full of discontent and striving to a life of radical contentment。 Pointing out shifts and perspective changes along the way。 It is like a kind friend who sits alongside you and cheers you on to live your best life and be authentically who you are。 It's not empty platitudes and it's not copying what's worked for her。 It's inspiring and uplifting in all the right way Jamie Varon's book is beautiful inside out。 The book contains sections that start with her own journey and how she moved from a life full of discontent and striving to a life of radical contentment。 Pointing out shifts and perspective changes along the way。 It is like a kind friend who sits alongside you and cheers you on to live your best life and be authentically who you are。 It's not empty platitudes and it's not copying what's worked for her。 It's inspiring and uplifting in all the right ways。with gratitude to edelweiss for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

This Messy Season

I’ve been looking forward to this book’s release for months, I love reading Jamie’s inspirational posts on Instagram。 I finished this book in a single day, because I couldn’t put it down。 I felt like she was speaking to me personally, encouraging me after hearing the worries of my heart! If you could use some encouragement in this season, I can’t recommend this book enough!

Wow! I'm pretty selective with my "Self-Help" reads as I think it's a genre that can easily be overdone, but this book was absolutely the right book at the right time。 I've been thinking a lot about our culture's focus on striving for bigger and better lately, while also contemplating ways I can work on changing that in my own life。 My word for 2022 is "enough"。 And the more we get back to "normal" the harder this feels to do。 In our fast paced world and with the constant ability to be available Wow! I know I could certainly use a group discussion around this one。Thank you to Rock Point for my gifted review copy。 。。。more

I was pleasantly surprised by this book。I wasn't expecting such an in-depth book。 It was full of important and relevant info, but without it being too overwhelming or dense。I really liked what Jamie Varon had to say on this topic and I can see myself revisiting this book again。 I was pleasantly surprised by this book。I wasn't expecting such an in-depth book。 It was full of important and relevant info, but without it being too overwhelming or dense。I really liked what Jamie Varon had to say on this topic and I can see myself revisiting this book again。 。。。more

“Self-help” books and I have a tricky history。 I tend to get all excited about a book cHaNgInG mY LiFe & get too attached to the ideas, only to feel shame and disappointment when the book didn’t in fact solve all my problems。 What’s different about Jamie’s work is that she doesn’t want you to change your life。 She wants you to see your life & be in your life - totally, & intentionally。Probably my favorite thing about Radically Content - it’s not preachy。 It’s hopeful without giving me too much “ “Self-help” books and I have a tricky history。 I tend to get all excited about a book cHaNgInG mY LiFe & get too attached to the ideas, only to feel shame and disappointment when the book didn’t in fact solve all my problems。 What’s different about Jamie’s work is that she doesn’t want you to change your life。 She wants you to see your life & be in your life - totally, & intentionally。Probably my favorite thing about Radically Content - it’s not preachy。 It’s hopeful without giving me too much “hope” to cling onto blindly。 It’s not going to be one of those self-help bibles that’s all the rage for a year & then the fad dies。 She doesn’t want to be your teacher - she wants you to be your own teacher & the world to be your teacher。 She wants the world to be your home, actually。 Whether or not you’re “achieving” “climbing” “hustling” “grinding” - whatever you want to call it。While this book did inspire me in random little ways (for example I’ve started to recognize the importance of consistency & routine in my life), mainly it inspired me to just BE (something our hustle culture does NOT inspire)。 However it didn’t leave me feeling like I’m “off the hook” & I should never do or try anything。 It somehow let me “off the hook” to hustle & grind while simultaneously making me feel like I can do anything & accomplish whatever I want。 I think that’s because it really got me to think: what DO I want to accomplish? What is my definition of success? Why? Jamie really flips the definition of success on its head。 The key here is that she urges us to look inside ourselves & our own lives to find our own version of success。 She understands that word is different for everyone & there’s no wrong answer。 Radically Content helped me identify what success is to me & gave me the grace to figure things out slowly。I also really appreciate how inclusive & empathetic Jamie is。 She understands that much of the “advice” out there is affected by so much nuance & level of privilege and she does not assume to understand everyone’s situations。 This is why what she’s putting out there is so important - it’s not universal “advice”, but a guide - food for thought - for people to look into themselves & their lives, wherever & whoever they may be。I’ll be coming back to this book in the future, whenever I feel lost。 Someone said this book allowed them to “exhale” & I think that’s a perfect way to put it。 This book came to me right at the right time - Jamie has a gift for doing that, doesn’t she? 。。。more
