Summary

Lois Clary is a software engineer。 She codes all day and collapses at night into her sofa, her human contact limited to the two brothers who run the local takeaway from which she orders dinner every evening – that is, until the brothers are forced out of business。 But they have one last delivery for Lois: their culture, the sourdough starter used to bake their famous bread。 She must keep it alive, feed it daily, play it music, and learn to bake with it。 Lois is no baker, but soon, not only is she eating her own homemade, but she's initiated into a fantastical and possibly fantastically sinister underground world: a secret market that aims to fuse home-cooked food with cutting-edge technology。。。

This author is quirky - very quirky but he gets to an interesting message at the end of his books。 I like the characters and the wacky ideas - very cool ,, I think。

This book captures so well the sense of accomplishment and joy that comes from baking: transforming water, flour, salt, and starter into a beautiful loaf of sourdough。 The book taps into the emptiness that comes with modern work, and how it can be supplanted with pursuing cooking and baking。 The story is very much for those into the food scene and those familiar with San Francisco。 It's a small, niche book whose story and characterizations aren't fully fleshed out, but for me, this book was enti This book captures so well the sense of accomplishment and joy that comes from baking: transforming water, flour, salt, and starter into a beautiful loaf of sourdough。 The book taps into the emptiness that comes with modern work, and how it can be supplanted with pursuing cooking and baking。 The story is very much for those into the food scene and those familiar with San Francisco。 It's a small, niche book whose story and characterizations aren't fully fleshed out, but for me, this book was entirely too relatable for me not to enjoy it。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this story! I resonated a lot with the main character and her career/life path as an engineer which i think heightened my enjoyment of the book。Two things: 1。) I tried out the audiobook for this for one chapter and was not a fan。 I would recommend reading the physical or ebook over the audio experience。 2。) I heard that this book was strange and I was unsure what that meant。。。 until I started reading。 It is very strange! I would also recommend keeping an open mind when you read I really enjoyed this story! This book is very much a character driven novel which is not my cup of tea。

Another unique, creative, enjoyable adventure from Robin Sloan。

Loved the way Lois’s narrative evolves in this story, and the eclectic array of characters she encounters through it。 The book makes me want to visit San Francisco。 Is Charlotte Clingstone a reference to Alice Waters? I think so!

This was a love letter to bread。 An ode to lactobacillus, the microbes that turn flour and water into fluffy, crispy-crusted sourdough。The story follows Lois, a programmer who moves to San Francisco for a new job at a tech company that builds and programs state-of-the-art robotic arms with the aim of revolutionizing work as we know it。 After a small local eatery run by two eccentric brothers gifts her a sourdough starter with mystical properties that has been passed through their family for gene This was a love letter to bread。 An ode to lactobacillus, the microbes that turn flour and water into fluffy, crispy-crusted sourdough。The story follows Lois, a programmer who moves to San Francisco for a new job at a tech company that builds and programs state-of-the-art robotic arms with the aim of revolutionizing work as we know it。 After a small local eatery run by two eccentric brothers gifts her a sourdough starter with mystical properties that has been passed through their family for generations, she's sent down an adventure of bread baking, rogue food revolutionaries, and underground food markets。The book was definitely bizarre at times, but also charming and fun。 As a bread baker myself, I loved the aura of wonder, history, and mysticism the author gave to the sourdough starter。 I also thought it was creative how Sloan juxtaposed the ancient microbe battlefield of fermentation alongside contemporary technology, melding the old with the new。 It was also a good thing that I had access to lots of freshly baked bread while I read this - that is a requirement! 。。。more

I really enjoyed this book! It surprised me with its originality and delightfulness。 Lois is a woman who got a good tech job out of college, but her life became one of dreary repetition。 She discovers a wonderful dive restaurant that delivers, and her life is never the same。 Forced to leave because of visa issues, the owners gift Lois their sourdough starter。 And so it begins。 I loved the almost magical reality aspects brought to the story by the quirky personality of the starter, the pseudo-sec I really enjoyed this book! Little details, such as the description of the Magza (so?) culture, the war of the starters, and the faces in the loaves add so much sparkle to this unique story。 If you like quirky, look no further。 An added plus is the music used in the audio version。 The story behind it is easy to find online, and quite interesting。 I loved this book。 。。。more

I too would love to leave my soul sucking corporate tech job to grow sourdough bread from a magical starter and get involved in the politics of farmers markets。 This protagonist really be living the true millennial dream。 My starter would need to listen to Taylor Swift tho, so not sure how that would impact the bake。

This was such a fun, easy book to read and even though it’s a simple story line, Robin Sloan draws you in! It was really cool to see San Francisco and the Bay Area both reflected and reimagined and there are definite parallels to people and places that exist today。 I loved that the plot focused on following your heart and your passions, even if they may not be the most profitable。 My only complaint is I felt the ending was a bit rushed as a lot happened in the last few chapters。

I loved this book to start off, and it triggered me to finally order some sourdough baskets to do the thing right (I’ve only made failed starters in the past)。 However, I felt like it kind of went off the deep end three quarters through - I felt the same about her earlier book, Pneumbra。 🤷‍♀️

Full confession -- I didn't particularly like, and never finished, Mr。 Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore。 For whatever reason it just didn't click with me, despite being about a bookstore (one of my favorite things ever)。 For whatever reason, however, I decided to give another book by the same author, "Sourdough," a shot。。。 and I'm glad I did。 It's a quirky, fun, lighthearted read that lifted my spirits and made me crave sourdough。Lois is a computer programmer working for a robotics lab in Silicon Va Full confession -- I didn't particularly like, and never finished, Mr。 Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore。 For whatever reason it just didn't click with me, despite being about a bookstore (one of my favorite things ever)。 For whatever reason, however, I decided to give another book by the same author, "Sourdough," a shot。。。 and I'm glad I did。 It's a quirky, fun, lighthearted read that lifted my spirits and made me crave sourdough。Lois is a computer programmer working for a robotics lab in Silicon Valley, who is gifted a sourdough starter by her favorite takeout restaurant when its owners unexpectedly move due to visa issues。 Lois has never baked once in her life, but gives the starter a try。。。 and finds that not only is the bread it bakes delicious and unique, but the starter itself seems to have a life of its own! And this starter will lead Lois from the robotics company to a most unusual farmer's market。。。 and from the eateries and foodies of California to tales of a far-off land where the starter first originated。。。This book best falls under the label of "magical realism," given the behavior of the starter and the stories associated with it。 But while the "magic" in a "magical realism" story can often feel out of place, here it lends a sense of wonder and enchantment to things that can already be seen as wondrous on their own -- let's face it, who doesn't go to a farmer's market and not feel some sense of wonder? And while the combination of tech talk and food might seem like a clash to some people, this book spends a great deal of time discussing how the marriage of traditional methods and new technology can often lead to surprising results。The story wanders a fair bit as it goes, veering from one topic to another quite a bit。 But the journey -- and the memorable characters Lois and the reader run into along the way -- make the ride enjoyable。 And by the end of the book, you just might find yourself craving some sourdough bread kneaded by a robot, honey harvested from the bees of Chernobyl, or a homemade cricket cookie。 。。。more

This book was good for a light read! It was a comforting story with a touch of magical realism。 Some of the questions I had weren’t really addressed by the end, and I was kind of hoping Lois would choose the other path open to her。 Ultimately though the stakes were low enough that I don’t mind that much。

So cute!! Full of lighthearted whimsy which is just what the doctor ordered。 Delaney Liebforth I urge you to read this book!!!

I loved everything about this book! At once humorous while maintaining a surprising amount of depth, Robin Sloan totally charmed me with this little gem。 I need to bake bread again!!!!!

What a fun, charming book! This was such a welcome surprise - I thought it was going to be dystopian and a little weird and it was, but it also was really heartwarming。 My favorite genre, which I call “a hug in a book”Highly recommend and a book I can see re-reading from time to time, even though that’s fairly rare for me!!

Kimberly

Super weird。 I enjoyed the references to Michigan!

This story was super cute。 I enjoyed it a lot as it is different from the regular tropes we all read on a daily basis。 At least from what I read。 I thought it was fun and light!

I feel exactly the same way about this book as I did about Mr。 Penumbra。 That is, the first 2/3 of this book are so fun, absorbing, and readable, but the final third is a silly, anti-climactic shame。

I needed an audiobook and found this, so I didn't realize until right now that it's the same author as Mr。 Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore。 That totally makes sense because they are a similar genre。 Mostly realistic, but not quite。 Different and I liked it。 (I just reread my review of Penumbra and I see that it gave me The Circle vibes。 This book did too!)
