Summary

#1 New York Times bestselling author Holly Black makes her stunning adult debut with Book of Night, a modern dark fantasy of shadowy thieves and secret societies in the vein of Ninth House and The Night Circus

In Charlie Hall’s world, shadows can be altered, for entertainment and cosmetic preferences—but also to increase power and influence。 You can alter someone’s feelings—and memories—but manipulating shadows has a cost, with the potential to take hours or days from your life。 Your shadow holds all the parts of you that you want to keep hidden—a second self, standing just to your left, walking behind you into lit rooms。 And sometimes, it has a life of its own。

Charlie is a low-level con artist, working as a bartender while trying to distance herself from the powerful and dangerous underground world of shadow trading。 She gets by doing odd jobs for her patrons and the naive new money in her town at the edge of the Berkshires。 But when a terrible figure from her past returns, Charlie’s present life is thrown into chaos, and her future seems at best, unclear—and at worst, non-existent。 Determined to survive, Charlie throws herself into a maelstrom of secrets and murder, setting her against a cast of doppelgangers, mercurial billionaires, shadow thieves, and her own sister—all desperate to control the magic of the shadows。

With sharp angles and prose, and a sinister bent, Holly Black is a master of shadow and story stitching。 Remember while you read, light isn’t playing tricks in Book of Night, the people are。

I’m not particularly fond of The Folk of Air trilogy but I liked Holly Black’s writing style and the premise of this book sounded really interesting。 I love morally gray characters。 So, I was hooked。I don't know what to feel about this。 The premise of this book was very interesting but the execution was, quite frankly, horrible。 I was expecting this book to be gritty and addictive。 Sadly, it wasn't either of those things。 The writing was really flat at times and the 'Past' chapters were really b I’m not particularly fond of The Folk of Air trilogy but I liked Holly Black’s writing style and the premise of this book sounded really interesting。 I love morally gray characters。 So, I was hooked。I don't know what to feel about this。 The premise of this book was very interesting but the execution was, quite frankly, horrible。 I was expecting this book to be gritty and addictive。 Sadly, it wasn't either of those things。 The writing was really flat at times and the 'Past' chapters were really boring at times。 They often broke the flow of the book。 The world building was so messy and I still don't understand parts of it。 It took me so long to understand even bits of it。 It was done in a very convoluted way。 The rules weren't explained properly because of that I found it very difficult to keep up with the plot。 The characters, on the other hand, weren't memorable at all。 Charlie wasn't well developed。 We learnt about things she is supposed to be good at but did not learn anything about her at all。 The only thing I know about her is that she makes bad decisions and that she is good at conning。 That's it。 (view spoiler)[ I liked Vince better。 I think the book should have focused more on him。 He would have been a much more memorable protagonist。 It was a shame that we didn't get more chapters from his POV。 (hide spoiler)]All the other characters were one dimensional。 The antagonist was also forgettable。 Just like this book。The first half of this was quite bad。 The second half was much better。 The last five chapters were very interesting。 (view spoiler)[Especially that plot twist。 It got me off guard and it made the book much more bearable。 (hide spoiler)]The ending was unsatisfying。 On one hand, I did like the unexpectedness of it, on the other hand, it didn't wrap up the book。 I thought this was a stand-alone book。 I don't know whether it will have a sequel or not。 But if it doesn't, then that was a very weird way to end the book。(view spoiler)[After everything I thought Vince and Charlie deserved a happy ending。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

Okay… I was really looking forward to something more than what I just read。 Story is really slow and kind of just okay until later on in the end。 Not sure how I feel right now wanting to continue with the sequel in the future。

This was one of my most anticipated books of 2022 and it was disappointing to say the least。 The story was boring because the magic system was underdeveloped which made it confusing and difficult to follow。 Very sad about this one。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I have very middle of road feelings towards this book。 I didn’t hate it and want to DNF and I didn’t love it and couldn’t wait to continue the story to find out what’s going to happen next。 Which is so unfortunate because this was a highly anticipated book for and because I generally love Holly Black’s writing。 The feeling I got the whole time is this book gives ninth-house-light vibes。 I wanted it to be more than it was。 Also for it currently being a standalone and you get an ending that would I have very middle of road feelings towards this book。 I didn’t hate it and want to DNF and I didn’t love it and couldn’t wait to continue the story to find out what’s going to happen next。 Which is so unfortunate because this was a highly anticipated book for and because I generally love Holly Black’s writing。 The feeling I got the whole time is this book gives ninth-house-light vibes。 I wanted it to be more than it was。 Also for it currently being a standalone and you get an ending that would hint at a potential sequel。 I feel like Holly Black wrote it that way with the hopes that she would get to write a sequel if she wanted to continue the story。 I don’t mind an open ending for us to imagine what happens to the characters after the story ends but that was more than an open ending。 More questions and a brand new conflict was created and then the book just ends。 。。。more

I am rather surprised to be DNFing a Holly Black book but after the first three chapters I have absolutely no desire to read more。 I am not finding either the protagonist or the setting compelling enough to continue, which is a shame given well-crafted world-building and nuanced characters are part of what I’ve enjoyed in her YA fae books。

Dnf at 7%。 Sigh…why are all the authors I used to love reading now becoming authors I don’t 😌 This was so dull and boring I wanted to fall asleep after reading the first chapter。 WHERE IS ALL THE INTRIGUE AND TENSION FROM THE FOLK OF THE AIR!!! What even is this world and how can shadows put emotions in someone lmao??? How is this written by the same person???? Idk what to say。

Robin

dnf @10% because this is just not it for me

ok。 so。 I did kinda go into this hoping for a cardan 2。0 and that was certainly not the case, but, the book was enjoyable none the less

Holly Black never disappoints - world building, complex characters, weird fucked up families, and relationships that are actually complex and interesting。 Devoured it in one day, going back to reread the Cruel Prince series as a consolation that I’m gonna have to wait for the next installment。

Clary

Me and this book had not started in the most pleasant terms but it wasn’t so bad。 I mean I’ve still a lot questions about the magica questions A LOT OF THEM and the pacing was a bit off according to me but overall the idea was good lmao

uhhh yo?Boy, lady, I sure hope there are plans for a sequel。 Because my full opinion is wholly dependent on if the story will go on。

Wow。 I was shocked (and dismayed) when I read this book, because Cruel Price was 🔥。 This one was…depressing? It fell so flat。 The protagonist is more like a shadow herself, for how little substance she has。 She MaKeS Bad ChOIcEs, and that’s about it。 Where the other books are evocative, sexy page-turners, this one has a cool premise, but feels as clunky as 90’s wedge sandals and leaves me asking for more。

I'm a longtime fan of Holly Black's writing so I was extremely excited to read her first adult novel! It's got all the things I've come to love from her work -- messy girl, brooding and mysterious boy, sinister vibes, paranormal plot, and lots of scheming。 The magical aspects of the story are flawlessly intertwined with mundane day life with arcane texts being uploaded online, theorists camped out on Reddit or sharing stories on TikTok, and magicians meeting up at elaborate parties and backrooms I'm a longtime fan of Holly Black's writing so I was extremely excited to read her first adult novel! I received an eARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review。I've heard many good things about Holly Black, but this is the first book of hers I've read。 (And it happens to be her adult debut。) It starts off strong--Charlie's backstory is incorporated well, and her dialogue with the other characters is sharp and unexpectedly funny。 Black's world-building ability is strong as well, and the chemistry between Charlie and Vince is solid。By the middle of the book, I found myself ge I received an eARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review。I've heard many good things about Holly Black, but this is the first book of hers I've read。 (And it happens to be her adult debut。) It starts off strong--Charlie's backstory is incorporated well, and her dialogue with the other characters is sharp and unexpectedly funny。 Black's world-building ability is strong as well, and the chemistry between Charlie and Vince is solid。By the middle of the book, I found myself getting a little bored and was struggling to pay attention to the different characters。 Somehow it felt like nothing was happening while Black simultaneously introduced different side characters and their roles in this treacherous, underground shadow world。 I thought there would be a little bit more action and less politics, I suppose。 I'm still curious enough to read a follow-up, and I'm definitely going to read Black's YA novels (about which I've heard rave reviews)。 Give this a try if you're looking for a new dark urban fantasy novel。 。。。more

Although the shadow magic was interesting, the characters were flat and the story just so-so。

I am majorly let down by this book。 I have been EAGERLY awaiting the release of this book since I first had heard about it。 I pre-ordered immediately and not so patiently waited for release day because I just knew it would be a 5 star read for me based off of the book description but boy was I wrong。 The story just felt flat with characters I didn't care about, a plot I wasn't really invested in, and some plot points that I didn't quite understand as well as I should due to a lack of description I am majorly let down by this book。 I have been EAGERLY awaiting the release of this book since I first had heard about it。 I pre-ordered immediately and not so patiently waited for release day because I just knew it would be a 5 star read for me based off of the book description but boy was I wrong。 The story just felt flat with characters I didn't care about, a plot I wasn't really invested in, and some plot points that I didn't quite understand as well as I should due to a lack of description。 Maybe I simply didn't "get" the story the way other readers did。 Comparing this to the Ninth House definitely set me up with high expectations that were not met。 The Ninth House was one of my favorite books I read in 2021 and this didn't come close to touching it。 It isn't often that I don't like a book, but I just really didn't care for this book at all。 I have heard many great things about other Holly Black books and would be happy to give her other books a try, but this one just wasn't it for me, and that makes me so sad。 Don't think I would really recommend this one, but maybe others would like it more than I did。 。。。more

ok tbh i have no idea how to rate this so it'll stay in the middle until i do my rereadlemme just share that i began to read again in 2020 because of holly black's the folk of the air。 i loved that series and still do。 so i had my expectations when black announced her new book。 it went up when i realized this will be adult。 i believe some authors restrict themselves when they decide to write in ya and holly black was one of them。 i couldnt hold my excitement when i heard book of night will be ad ok tbh i have no idea how to rate this so it'll stay in the middle until i do my rereadlemme just share that i began to read again in 2020 because of holly black's the folk of the air。 i loved that series and still do。 so i had my expectations when black announced her new book。 it went up when i realized this will be adult。 i believe some authors restrict themselves when they decide to write in ya and holly black was one of them。 i couldnt hold my excitement when i heard book of night will be adult。 unfortunately, after reading it, i have mixed feelings abt it。let's talk about the negatives first so i can jus rave abt the good things in the end。× is it ya?? adult??? honestly the themes are perfect for ya。 everything abt it is ya。 i think holly black only added few curse words here and sexual comments there to make it adult× world-building: i tend to like it when we quickly dive in the world, no infodump at all。 however, i do think it has its cons。 readers still need a breather to figure out the world。 context clues would help but if you are thrusted immediately, it is hard to follow up。 an example would be charlie would casually talk abt carapaces without explaining to the reader。 it would just be said here and there and you have to figure out the meaning on your own WHILE also figuring out the plot, the characters, and the setting。 it's exhausting。 or sometimes the word would be explained in one sentence and that's it, you are on your own, bud。× lack of dynamic: the story often goes back and forth between the present and the past。 and the past is usually fixated on scenes between the main character and a side character that eventually dies。 listen, i like some history。 i like to know the person im reading abt。 but in book of night, it felt like more was given to these side characters than the more important side ones, like charlie's sister。 i would have loved to see more of their interaction in the past just to see this bond between sisters AND it helps strengthens why charlie works so hard for her sister。also, i really wished i had seen more of her sister。 there was a subplot that couldve been dived into more if holly black took time。 sigh。 × lack of motivation: charlie apparently stuck her nose in a murder just bc she got curious?? like, is that really all?? not to mention, her supposed revenge against the antagonist。 i understand the anger but also。。。。 that's it?? youre doing all this bc of that?? i might be minimizing the situation (if anyone wants to talk abt this yes pls)。 i jus didnt believe she was going thru this bc of all her reasons。。。 and it's why i didnt feel invested as much。ok now onto the positives!!× characterization: i read a review talking abt holly black's side characters are all the same and i would have to agree。 BUT the characterization she did for charlie? i love it。 some might say she did all those bc she jus makes stupid mistakes。 but that's not basically it。 she realized she was only good at ONE thing bc of her stupid mistakes。 she was good at conning and being a thief bc she was bad at everything else。 i love how she grew the way she is so i had fun reading her past and seeing her grow。also??? idk how??? we dont get much of vince until halfway but when he started to appear less I MISSED THE HELL OUT OF HIM??? for a second i thought i was getting darlington 2。0 and was ready to cry my eyes out。 anw thats when i realized ive grown attached to vince。 it's insane。 × romance: listen, if you are going to go into this expecting romance and sex then this isnt it。 judecardan has more tension and scenes than charlie and vince BUT i fell in love w them all the same。 maybe bc i love the boy fall first and have been doing everything for the girl idk but they hit。 i love their small moments and even though they only have like 5% scenes together i can see why they love each other vvv much。 it warmed my cold heart。x world-building: yes i just criticized the world-building but i can also say this is such an interesting world or premise。 like as a little kid, i used to wonder what if shadows can move on their own?? what if they are LITERALLY a part of u?? maybe it's jus me but i found this part curious i love it。despite my criticisms, i want to see more of this world。 i want more charlie and vince。 i just want more!((honestly i think we will get a sequel)) 。。。more
