She’s a curious, delightful young girl whose grandfather meant the world to her。 He exposes his granddaughter to life’s wonders and he encouraged her inquisitive nature。 One day, his chair is empty。 Yes, he is no longer there physically for her and her reaction is to, “put her heart in a safe place。” She thought this was the best solution but soon she started to lose her world。 Closing herself off, everything that she used to do/think wasn’t important anymore。 I thought Jeffers writing was excel She’s a curious, delightful young girl whose grandfather meant the world to her。 He exposes his granddaughter to life’s wonders and he encouraged her inquisitive nature。 One day, his chair is empty。 Yes, he is no longer there physically for her and her reaction is to, “put her heart in a safe place。” She thought this was the best solution but soon she started to lose her world。 Closing herself off, everything that she used to do/think wasn’t important anymore。 I thought Jeffers writing was excellent as he addresses this issue。 He doesn’t address the issue head-on, but he allows the reader to put their own experiences and emotions into the text。 Her sadness, her withdrawal, the extent she thought she had to go to and the circumstances are presented for the reader to absorb。 I enjoyed that moment when the girl realizes that putting her heart in a safe place, under these circumstances, was not the correct answer。 She had lost herself and her grandfather when he died and now, she realizes what she must do。 Great ending to this heartwarming story。 5 stars 。。。more

Such a beautiful story。 An illustrator I liked said that this was her favorite children's book and it's really moving。 I think many adults will find this relates just as much to them, as it would to a child。 Maybe more so。 Such a beautiful story。 An illustrator I liked said that this was her favorite children's book and it's really moving。 I think many adults will find this relates just as much to them, as it would to a child。 Maybe more so。 。。。more

This heart-warming story about grief was sad and lovely, but it's one of those stories that appeals more to adults than to kids。 This heart-warming story about grief was sad and lovely, but it's one of those stories that appeals more to adults than to kids。 。。。more

Without ever mentioning the word death or even alluding to it, this book helps you understand how you might feel after you lose someone you love and how you might recover your broken heart in time。

I loved Oliver Jeffers illustrations but I felt the story in this book was really vague。 It's a book about grief but I'm not sure I totally understand the message? And it's difficult to read a book like this to children because there isn't really a story。 It speaks metaphorically and seems more for adults。 I didn't love it。 I loved Oliver Jeffers illustrations but I felt the story in this book was really vague。 It's a book about grief but I'm not sure I totally understand the message? “Until the day she found an empty chair” 💔This is the first time I read for Oliver Jeffers and he has become one of my favorite children's authors。I love this book and Oliver's way to tackle such heavy subjects, such as loss and grief, in a sensitive visual way。 “Until the day she found an empty chair” 💔This is the first time I read for Oliver Jeffers and he has become one of my favorite children's authors。I love this book and Oliver's way to tackle such heavy subjects, such as loss and grief, in a sensitive visual way。 。。。more

A complex, but somehow also simple, picturebook that both adults and children will be able to interpret and treasure。 There is relatability for a wide age range and is a tool worth exploring when teaching and understanding about death。

This book showed up on lists of books about grief, and it is lovely-- looking at sealing away one's feelings until later, and then opening up again。 Jeffers' storytelling is strong as always。 This book showed up on lists of books about grief, and it is lovely-- looking at sealing away one's feelings until later, and then opening up again。 Jeffers' storytelling is strong as always。 。。。more

Love this book。 The illustrations are lovely (especially the double-spreads)。 And the story is so well done - and tells about coping with the grief and not feeling like yourself and forgetting who you were after losing someone who you love that brought out in you all the wonder, and joy, and curiosity of the world and life。 It's told in a very simple and easy to understand way。 I think it's a must-read for both kids and adults。 Love this book。 The illustrations are lovely (especially the double-spreads)。 And the story is so well done - and tells about coping with the grief and not feeling like yourself and forgetting who you were after losing someone who you love that brought out in you all the wonder, and joy, and curiosity of the world and life。 It's told in a very simple and easy to understand way。 I think it's a must-read for both kids and adults。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 A beautiful story about a girl who wonders about the wonders of the world until the day her Grandfather dies, leaving the armchair empty。 Based on this, as the reader, we can infer that her Grandfather was full of knowledge about the world and loved to go exploring with her。 When her Grandfather passes away, she puts her heart in a bottle, keeping it in a safe place so that the memories don’t disappear and the grief isn’t as painful, until she finds another young girl who is just like she was - A beautiful story about a girl who wonders about the wonders of the world until the day her Grandfather dies, leaving the armchair empty。 Based on this, as the reader, we can infer that her Grandfather was full of knowledge about the world and loved to go exploring with her。 When her Grandfather passes away, she puts her heart in a bottle, keeping it in a safe place so that the memories don’t disappear and the grief isn’t as painful, until she finds another young girl who is just like she was - curious about the world。 She helps this little girl to unlock the many wonderful things by trying to retrieve the heart from the bottle however, she can’t seem to figure out how。 The little girl helps her to figure out how - it almost seems as if the girl (from the beginning) had forgotten how to ‘unlock’ her past but she finds this little girl on the beach who she can relate to。 I really like that you can see the clear passing of time, watching the girl grow up and get older (we see this physically as she gets taller)。 The illustrations are FANTASTIC, although they are not actually textured, the way in which some of them have been drawn are realistic and give a 3D effect for the reader, making us feel as if we are part of the characters journey/story。 。。。more

ugh。 this broke my heart。el duelo es un tema difícil para mí, no puedo superar la muerte de alguien, hasta encontrar una explicación para ella。 creo que este libro supo tratar muy bien un tema así, y es fácil de que un niño lo pueda entender。 la verdad sí me hizo llorar este libro, y me ganó el sentimiento en un punto del libro, y me provocó un sentimiento, el cual es para mí el entero propósito de toda creación del ser humano。 qué buena lectura <3。
