Summary

A librarian inherits a bookshop from her estranged mother, leading her halfway across the world on a journey of self-discovery that transcends time and honors the unbreakable bonds of love and family。

When librarian Valentina Baker was a teenager, her mother, Eloise, unexpectedly fled to her native London, leaving Val and her father on their own。 Now in her thirties and fresh out of a failed marriage, Val feels a nagging disenchantment with her life--and knows she is still heartbroken over her mother's abandonment。

In a bittersweet twist of fate, Val receives word that Eloise has passed away, leaving Val her Primrose Hill apartment and the deed to a bookshop Val never knew she'd owned。 Though the news is devastating, Val finds herself more determined than ever to discover who her mother truly was。 She jets across the Atlantic, departing Seattle for a new life in charming London。

Slowly but surely, Val begins to piece together Eloise's life in the UK, falling in love with her pastel-colored flat, cozy neighborhood, and tucked-away storefront。 But when she discovers that The Book Garden is in danger of going under, Val must work with its eccentric staff to get it in working order。 In the process, she learns more about Eloise than she ever thought possible。 And as Val races to save the shop, Eloise's own story unfolds, leading both mother and daughter to unearth revelatory truths。

I've loved every Sarah Jio novel。 "With Love from London" is no exception。 I didn't want it to end。 Sad and heartwarming at the same time。 I love the alternating timelines and the mother-daughter storyline。 That fact that the backdrop is books/bookstore/bookstagram makes it even more perfect。 I've loved every Sarah Jio novel。 "With Love from London" is no exception。 I didn't want it to end。 Sad and heartwarming at the same time。 I love the alternating timelines and the mother-daughter storyline。 That fact that the backdrop is books/bookstore/bookstagram makes it even more perfect。 。。。more

Loved this book and a woman learning about her mother when she inherits her mom’s bookstore in London。

I definitely thought this would be a silly little chick lit book, and there were certainly some elements of that, but this book was fantastic。 It covered love, loss, betrayal, friendship, fate, and the ever evolving chances at a new path in life。 I loved the characters, mostly, and loved how the past and present both unfolded, finally coming together in such a beautiful way。 There were pieces of the book that were predictable, but it certainly didn’t take away from the beauty of the book。 This w I definitely thought this would be a silly little chick lit book, and there were certainly some elements of that, but this book was fantastic。 It covered love, loss, betrayal, friendship, fate, and the ever evolving chances at a new path in life。 I loved the characters, mostly, and loved how the past and present both unfolded, finally coming together in such a beautiful way。 There were pieces of the book that were predictable, but it certainly didn’t take away from the beauty of the book。 This was my first book by Sarah Jio, but it won’t be my last。 I’ve already downloaded another by her。 。。。more

5 million stars for this book!!! It was cozy and beautiful and interesting, and it held onto me until the very end。 I borrowed this book from the library, but I’m going to have to buy a copy for myself to reread in the future。 It’s a beautiful story about love and loss in all it’s forms, and how we can make our lives beautiful and worthwhile, no matter how grim it may seem at one point or another。 So in love!

Absolutely loved it。 It was unexpected and lovely。

I think this could have been a good mystery into abandonment, etc。 but ultimately was superficial and cutesy。 Amazing that a 12/13yo wouldn’t know more about what had been going on and had some opinions; she was quite babied。 (What was up with the housekeeper? Knew stuff and was silent?) I did appreciate how the story unfolded, and I wanted to find out what the reason could possibly have been to justify what happened。 But, as others have pointed out, there were many years in between ages 18 and I think this could have been a good mystery into abandonment, etc。 but ultimately was superficial and cutesy。 Amazing that a 12/13yo wouldn’t know more about what had been going on and had some opinions; she was quite babied。 (What was up with the housekeeper? To me, the American sounded vaguely British, which was distracting。 2。5 。。。more

Very little of this story is realistic but it's an easy read in a lovely London village and the two timelines are clearly identified by time and place。 When the author finally reveals all, however, it's frustrating because so much of the story would never need to happen the way it does。 Some elements are unnecessarily complex and others are overly simplified。 The audiobook narration is not to my liking - the lead American accent is sing-songy, the English accents not English enough, and only one Very little of this story is realistic but it's an easy read in a lovely London village and the two timelines are clearly identified by time and place。 When the author finally reveals all, however, it's frustrating because so much of the story would never need to happen the way it does。 Some elements are unnecessarily complex and others are overly simplified。 The audiobook narration is not to my liking - the lead American accent is sing-songy, the English accents not English enough, and only one male character sounds like a man, but the characterization is also at fault because none of the male characters ring true。 。。。more

I've never read any of this author's books before but I'm glad I finally found her。This is about a mother/daughter relationship, second chances, and finding your own family。 This checked a lot of my boxes - I like stories about books, alternating povs/timelines, and an ending that wraps everything up。 I'm going to add some of her other books to my list too。 I've never read any of this author's books before but I'm glad I finally found her。This is about a mother/daughter relationship, second chances, and finding your own family。 This checked a lot of my boxes - I like stories about books, alternating povs/timelines, and an ending that wraps everything up。 I'm going to add some of her other books to my list too。 。。。more

Not sure what I'm missing here but this is not a 5-star book。 It is cute and it is sweet--for that it can have 4 stars but otherwise, no。 Also, it was WAY too predictable。 I did finish it and it was a quick read so it is a good escape romance。The timelines in this book totally threw me off。 I could not track the age of all these people。 I was totally thrown when Edgar swept Eloise into his arms and carried her into the restaurant (?!), and Milly and Fernando--say what again?! So。。 I did not care for this book。 I liked the Valentina portion (the only reason for my 3 stars), but I fucking HATED Eloise。 How does a person consistently make only wrong decisions? She didn't make a good decision in the entire book。I get it, she was in an abusive relationship (that she should have left decades earlier)。 But that doesn't excuse any of the decisions she made after she left him。I just don't know how this book has such good reviews。 I understand Frank was the real villain, but E So。。 I did not care for this book。 I liked the Valentina portion (the only reason for my 3 stars), but I fucking HATED Eloise。 How does a person consistently make only wrong decisions? The author successfully provides readers with a nice, neat, feel good, heartwarming story。 The London neighborhood of Primrose Hill is the primary setting for the story, and exciting to experience on a travel journey。 The story is a quick read although a bit slow in the beginning。 There is nothing dramatic or earth shattering about the storyline but a nice mystery regarding the main characters estranged mother。 Readers embark on a scavenger hunt to discover why the mother abandoned her daughter。 The author successfully provides readers with a nice, neat, feel good, heartwarming story。 The London neighborhood of Primrose Hill is the primary setting for the story, and exciting to experience on a travel journey。 The story is a quick read although a bit slow in the beginning。 There is nothing dramatic or earth shattering about the storyline but a nice mystery regarding the main characters estranged mother。 Readers embark on a scavenger hunt to discover why the mother abandoned her daughter。 Romance is woven into the story on a number of levels, at times predictable but also heartwarming。Valentino Baker, the main character, is a thirty something divorcee living in a slump in Seattle, Washington when her estranged mother dies leaving her London apartment and bookstore to Valentino。 Off to London Valentino goes and begins a journey of self discovery。 Definitely a feel good novel inter laced with a mystery and a few romances。 Enjoy! 。。。more
