Summary

Sun Tzu's Art of War, compiled more than two thousand years ago, is a study of the anatomy of organizations in conflict。 It is perhaps the most prestigious and influential book of strategy in the world today。 Now, this unique volume brings together the essential versions of Sun Tzu's text, along with illuminating commentaries and auxiliary texts written by distinguished strategists。 The translations, by the renowned translator Thomas Cleary, have all been published previously in book form, except for The Silver Sparrow Art of War, which is available here for the first time。 This comprehensive collection contains:

The Art of War: This edition of Sun Tzu's text includes the classic collection of commentaries by eleven interpreters。

Mastering the Art of War: Consisting of essays by two prominent statesmen-generals of Han dynasty China, Zhuge Liang and Liu Ji, this book develops the strategies of Sun Tzu's classic into a complete handbook of organization and leadership。 It draws on episodes from Chinese history to show in concrete terms the proper use of Sun Tzu's principles。

The Lost Art of War: Written more than one hundred years after Sun Tzu's text, by Sun Bin, a linear descendant of Sun Tzu, this classic of political and military strategy is faithful to the principles of The Art of War, while developing their practical application much further。

The Silver Sparrow Art of War: A version of Sun Tzu's Art of War based on a manuscript of the classic text discovered at a Chinese archeological site in China's Shandong Province in 1972, which contains previously unknown fragments。

Just old instructions for war

The book is deep and makes sense。 Many strategical thoughts and tricks, which may be applied to life。 However there is small amount of close to modern life explanations, which probably is good, since you can and should use your imagination fully and make your brain wander。 For those who want list of hints how to act or storyline - will be boring。

Great nuggets of wisdom, but it’s not a great read unless you’ve got a specific endeavor for which you need to form a strategy。 Even then, you’ll want to take the time to make notes and figure out how the war scenarios translate to your specific pursuit。However, to read this cover to cover is repetitive, redundant, dull, and frankly sometimes contradictory。 But maybe those who’ve analyzed it in more detail would take issue with that last criticism。

A mind-opening read on the basics of military strategy, which can be universally applied to various settings。 A useful perspective on strategy, compels reflection。 "All warfare is based on deception。" A mind-opening read on the basics of military strategy, which can be universally applied to various settings。 A useful perspective on strategy, compels reflection。 "All warfare is based on deception。" 。。。more

Voy a comentar algunos aspectos del libro que me han llamado la atención (para mal)。 Tampoco creo que sean "spoilers" como tal, pero si prefieres recibir la bomba de información basura del propio libro, te recomiendo que te saltes esta parte。Página 27 - "[。。。] the common people go broke trying to buy things, so the country is naturally impoverished"。 Aparentemente, hace unos milenios también había criptobros。。。Página 49: "So there are three ways in which a civil leadership causes the military tr Voy a comentar algunos aspectos del libro que me han llamado la atención (para mal)。 Tampoco creo que sean "spoilers" como tal, pero si prefieres recibir la bomba de información basura del propio libro, te recomiendo que te saltes esta parte。Página 27 - "[。。。] the common people go broke trying to buy things, so the country is naturally impoverished"。 Aparentemente, hace unos milenios también había criptobros。。。Página 49: "So there are three ways in which a civil leadership causes the military trouble。 When a civil leadership unaware of the facts tells its armies to advance when it should not, or tells its armies to retreat when it should not, this is called tying up the armies。 When the civil leadership is ignorant of military affairs but shares equally in the government of the armies, the soldiers get confused。 When the civil leadership is ignorant of military maneuvers but shares equally in the command of the armies, the soldiers hesitate。 Once the armies are confused and hesitant, trouble comes from competitors。 This is called taking away victory by deranging the military"。 Sin embargo, intentar separar gobierno y cuerpo militar resulta en actuaciones del ejército independientes del deseo del pueblo, llegando incluso a golpes de Estado。 ¿Hay punto medio?Página 105: "The reason that armies look upon strong enemies the way they look at virgin girls is that their aggressiveness is being taken advantage of, as they are stirred up over something"。 Era totalmente necesario sacar tu lado pedófilo y misógino para explicar la manipulación militar 🤨Otras conclusiones: Los conflictos son inevitables y este libro ofrece reflexiones sobre las ventajas de resolverlos procurando evitar daños。 Sin embargo, parece que resulta opacado el hecho de que los conflictos "inevitables" (producidos por intereses económicos o políticos de un grupo muy reducido de personas) desemboquen en la pérdida de vidas humanas。 La deshumanización con la que se habla de los soldados y civiles, como si fueran objetos de usar y tirar, resulta horrorosa。 Y aunque el autor y los comentaristas abogan por evitar el conflicto, sigo pensando que los conflictos a los que se refieren son evitables si la sociedad tuviera unas bases diferentes。 。。。more

It is crazy to think that over +/- 400 B。C。, a Chinese strategists wrote down his view on war tactics and now in 2022 it is still available to read。 This little book also provides some background information about Sun Tzu, the state of China at the time and how the text evolved over time with added commentary and changes。 His strategies are still usable in a modern setting。

Es un libro que me gustaría tener en físico y poder rayarlo。 Es interesante como lo cuenta el autor y de qué manera puede hacerse relación con cosas del día a día。 Lo volvería a leer

The only problem holding the art of war back is the way it's written。 Similar to most philosophy books it uses overly flowery language to explain concepts that could be presented in more simple terms。 The only problem holding the art of war back is the way it's written。 Similar to most philosophy books it uses overly flowery language to explain concepts that could be presented in more simple terms。 。。。more

Decided it might be a quick listen。 And seems like some timeless lessons of you want to read into it and interpret the book as it applies to modern times。 Maybe I could give some extra stars to the genera concepts of “make plans, know your terrain, be unpredictable, and know how to use the tools at hand。”Worthy notes all, just not necessarily what I’m feeling at the moment?

Not sure what I was expecting to gain from this。 Sun Tzu says always attack downhill, your spies are your best asset and fire is a powerful weapon。I say avoid war。

“El arte de la guerra es someter al enemigo sin luchar”。 Una obra que tiene unos 2500 años y la gran mayoría de citas siguen siendo aplicables a día de hoy。 La guerra cambia de medios, pero en esencia sigue siendo lo mismo。 Me pongo intensito y cito a Mao: “la guerra es política con derramamiento de sangre, y la política es guerra sin derramamiento de sangre”

listened on audible I don’t remember anything except when your army has a piece of land try to keep it and also spies are good

It is entirely possible to skip through this book in one sitting as it is so short。 Don't be fooled by the length though, there is so much in its pages。 I have a (very!) amateurish interest in military history and it was fascinating to read a book on military theory。 So much of what Sun Tzu recommends still holds through today (I couldn't help but think about his lessons in the context of the ongoing Russian invasion of ukraine)。 Some aspects are questionable of course, but maybe I just don't un It is entirely possible to skip through this book in one sitting as it is so short。 Don't be fooled by the length though, there is so much in its pages。 I have a (very!) amateurish interest in military history and it was fascinating to read a book on military theory。 So much of what Sun Tzu recommends still holds through today (I couldn't help but think about his lessons in the context of the ongoing Russian invasion of ukraine)。 Some aspects are questionable of course, but maybe I just don't understand well enough! “He will win who knows when to fight and when not to fight。” - Sun TzuA millennia old incredible book on warfare tactics which I presume would still be relevant in the modern age。 The various commentaries included delivers interesting take on the manoeuvres of war and does a good job of resolving the ambiguities from translations。 Open any page and one will find practical wisdom that can help in navigating through situations we face in our lives。 I was drawn towards this amid the ongoing war。
