Summary

A novel about an idyllic small town poisoned by its past, and one girl who must fight the strange disease that's slowly claiming everyone she loves。

Wren owes everything she has to her home, Hollow’s End, a centuries-old, picture perfect American town。 Tourists travel miles to marvel at its miracle crops, including the shimmering, iridescent wheat of Wren’s family farm。 Until five months ago。

That’s when the quicksilver mercury blight first surfaced, poisoning the farms of Hollow’s End one by one。 It began by consuming the crops--thick, silver sludge bleeding from the earth。 Next were the animals。 Infected livestock and wild creatures alike staggered off into the woods by day—only to return at night, their eyes, fogged white, leering from the trees。

Then, the blight came for the neighbors。

Wren is among the last locals standing。 And the blight has finally come for her, too。 Now, the only one she can turn to is the last person she wants to call: her ex, Derek。 They haven’t spoken in months, but Wren and Derek still have one thing in common—Hollow’s End means everything to them。 Only there’s much they don’t know about their hometown and its renowned miracle crops。 And they’re about to discover that miracles aren’t free。

Their ancestors have an awful lot to pay for, and Wren and Derek are the only ones left to settle old debts。

Think zombies, but with quicksilver seeping out of their body, mold growing on their nails, irises turning cloudy white, and a calling home to the forest during the day。 At night they come out to hunt and you better be careful - the infected aren't the only way to catch it。 The entire land is covered with the blight。 SO MUCH of this book hinges on atmospheric storytelling and world building - Ann Fraistat didn't disappoint。 I was pulled into this story from page one。 The way she tells a story - Think zombies, but with quicksilver seeping out of their body, mold growing on their nails, irises turning cloudy white, and a calling home to the forest during the day。 At night they come out to hunt and you better be careful - the infected aren't the only way to catch it。 The entire land is covered with the blight。 SO MUCH of this book hinges on atmospheric storytelling and world building - Ann Fraistat didn't disappoint。 I was pulled into this story from page one。 The way she tells a story - man idk。 I got so many spooky, creepy, horror story vibes from this novel。 It would be a perfect autumn/october mood read。 I know this isn't proper horror but it gave me the same feel I got from novels like Bird Box。 Fraistat mastered the art of giving the reader that eerie 'someone's watching me' feeling and even now a few hours after finishing the novel I can't shake it。 Not only was the general vibe of the book amazing, but I loved the character dynamics。 Wren was a dreamer and a fighter all at the same time。 She had an idyllic naïvety about her that made you want to root for her and yet anytime she was cornered the claws came out and you got to see what she was really made of。 This book deeply explores themes of sacrifice, right and wrong, revenge, dark family secrets, the power of bonds with animals, and taking care of the people we love。 At times it was heart wrenchingly sad and a few pages down the road I would be laughing or giggling over a cute moment。 I so desperately want more that it's almost a new heartbreak post-novel to realize it was a standalone and this was the author's debut novel。 I'm just absolutely blown away。 Content Warnings: Graphic depictions of animal death, blood, body horror, death, gore, grief, murder, and violence。 Slightly more specific, non-spoilery details under the spoiler tag。(view spoiler)[There is a lot of body horror, blood, death, gore, grief, and violence。 I added a warning for murder because although no people end up dying of murder, there are several points in the book where you almost think that's the case。 There is also one murder mentioned that happened in the past。 There is a lot of animal death, but no animals that are pets or are close to the main characters。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

The best YA horror I’ve read in a while。 It’s well-paced, atmospheric, emotionally complex, and fully engrossing。 The gore and gross-out level is perfect- enough to make things high stakes, but not over the top or solely for shock value。

What I liked:A horrifying tale that is rich, detailed, and heartbreaking all at the same time that kept me enthralled。 Zombie novels are not new, but I tend to like the ones with a unique take on them, for example, warm bodies。 What we harvest zombie-like issues stem from plants that have been enriched by minerals infused with blight。 The founding members of this town were desperate, and when they discovered what this blight could do for their plants and the financial freedom that came with usin What I liked:A horrifying tale that is rich, detailed, and heartbreaking all at the same time that kept me enthralled。 Zombie novels are not new, but I tend to like the ones with a unique take on them, for example, warm bodies。 What we harvest zombie-like issues stem from plants that have been enriched by minerals infused with blight。 The founding members of this town were desperate, and when they discovered what this blight could do for their plants and the financial freedom that came with using it, they overlooked what could come from it。 The horror descriptions flowed with the story rather than providing for shock factor alone。 Final Verdict:What We Harvest was enjoyable to listen to as an audiobook。 I could process and fall into the story naturally without feeling like I was being drugged through a horror novel。 I was right there with Wren as she battles with guilt that she caused her family this devasting blow from the blight and has doomed herself and her town。 The description of how they dealt with interacting with the blight echoes how we dealt with Covid-19。 A fascinating tale。 Audiobook Review: A narrator that helps lend a horror-like tone to the tale about a town plagued by blight。 I was engrossed with each chapter, and I am not a huge horror reader, but this one was unique with the rock, the desperate families, and a character with fierce determination to save herself and her town。 。。。more

This was a very fun read (listen actually, the audiobook had a terrific narrator)! I really enjoyed the world building。 Fraistat made Hollow's End sound very cozy despite it being host to a terrifying moldy virus。 And while the characters weren't bad, it was definitely the creature feature and vivid setting that made the book so interesting to me。 This was a very fun read (listen actually, the audiobook had a terrific narrator)! The story is complex and full of action that isn’t dragged out over hundreds of pages。 Ann Fraistat does a great job of keeping the plot moving and the characters (and readers) and their toes。 I’m not someone who typically enjoys reading horror, but there was something about this story that kept me going。 I needed to know how Wren and Derek were going to work together—because working with your ex? Awkward。 But, on their own or together, they are both complex and relatable characters。 They’re faced with tough decisions to make and difficult (but normal) teenage emotions that make the entire situation hard to navigate。 Whether you like zombies, romance, ancient secrets, or a creepy sci-fi read, What We Harvest has got something for everyone to enjoy!Follow us on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook @pinereadsreview and check out our website at www。pinereadsreview。com for reviews, author interviews, blogs, podcast episodes, and more! 。。。more

This is a really, fun fresh take on zombies。 The world building takes a bit to come full circle, but it does eventually get there and I felt like all my questions were answered, however, I think answering some of those questions earlier in the book could've improved my reading experience a little。 I really loved the characters, and I felt like they felt true to teens, and especially teens in a small community。 I also thought the way the situation was treated by the government felt realistic and This is a really, fun fresh take on zombies。 The world building takes a bit to come full circle, but it does eventually get there and I felt like all my questions were answered, however, I think answering some of those questions earlier in the book could've improved my reading experience a little。 I really loved the characters, and I felt like they felt true to teens, and especially teens in a small community。 I also thought the way the situation was treated by the government felt realistic and not far off from what would likely happen。 The book is super atmospheric and made for a really fun read。 。。。more

What We Harvest was good but weird。 I think the whole virus concept was pretty interesting。 It's just how certain characters acted to situations that boggled me。 For example, the parents in this book suck ass。 Wasn't a fan of what they did at all。 Then there's Wren, the main character, and I didn't really like her either。 She gave me whiplash for the entire book。 Besides not really being invested in the characters, the whole mystery around the virus and blight confused me at times。 It's like we What We Harvest was good but weird。 I think the whole virus concept was pretty interesting。 It's just how certain characters acted to situations that boggled me。 For example, the parents in this book suck ass。 Wasn't a fan of what they did at all。 Then there's Wren, the main character, and I didn't really like her either。 She gave me whiplash for the entire book。 Besides not really being invested in the characters, the whole mystery around the virus and blight confused me at times。 It's like we didn't get all the information we needed in order to understand it all completely。 Or maybe that's just how I'm feeling after finishing the book? I'm always up for a virus story, so this definitely intrigued me。 It takes place in a small town, where a blight has spread over the farmlands and turned people and animals into zombie-like creatures。 Wren is trying to help her parents save their land when the blight finally catches up to her and she must race against the clock if she's going to save her family and town。 Wren was sort of a wishy-washy character for me。 At times I liked her, like how much she still cared for her dog and her deter I'm always up for a virus story, so this definitely intrigued me。 It takes place in a small town, where a blight has spread over the farmlands and turned people and animals into zombie-like creatures。 Wren is trying to help her parents save their land when the blight finally catches up to her and she must race against the clock if she's going to save her family and town。 Wren was sort of a wishy-washy character for me。 At times I liked her, like how much she still cared for her dog and her determination to figure out the cause of the blight and save everyone。 At other times, I thought she was too whiny and I hate when people hurt someone because they think it's best for them。 She should have told Derek what she knew and let him decide how he felt about it, instead of abandoning him。 At least she does fight for him and tries to make it right by the end。 I didn't totally understand what the blight was and how the families used it。 Maybe I missed a bit or maybe it needed to be explained a bit better。 Either way, the story was quick paced and I think could have delved a bit more into this world。 I voluntarily read and reviewed this book。 All opinions are my own。 Thank you to Delacorte Press and NetGalley for the copy 。。。more

I enjoyed this, though sometimes the narrator was a bit too excited for how I think I personally would have read it in my head。 I think some people would love the audio though - it is definitely acted instead of read and adds to the tension - it just was sometimes over the top for how I read things。 Fun twist on a zombie story。

I can tell the author put a lot of work into the story。 The only thing I didn't like was Wren's attitude。 She was a selfish little buttface。 I mean, the dog Wren, the dog? Priorities sweet heart!4。5 Stars 。。。more

On one hand, I'm grateful for this book because it's the first book I've been able to finish in literal months, however, I wanted so much more from it so I'm left feeling a bit disappointed。From the offset I feel like we were just thrown into the story, and personally I think readers would have benefited a bit more from some exposition and build up to the blight。 I also didn't really connect to either of the leads, so I was just sorta ambivalent to them the entire time。 I didn't particularly see On one hand, I'm grateful for this book because it's the first book I've been able to finish in literal months, however, I wanted so much more from it so I'm left feeling a bit disappointed。From the offset I feel like we were just thrown into the story, and personally I think readers would have benefited a bit more from some exposition and build up to the blight。 I also didn't really connect to either of the leads, so I was just sorta ambivalent to them the entire time。 I didn't particularly see the sparks between them either, and felt like the romance was sort of shoe horned in。 Maybe it's just because I'm particular about my childhood friends to lovers, but like it just didn't do it for me。 I also would have liked to have seen more of Amber Murphy, or any of the Harris children。 One of the whole themes of the book was about the children of the founders coming together to right the wrongs of the past, so like why just confine it to the children of only two of the families? A minor gripe but still one I had。 The book wasn't bad, I just wish it had been executed differently in a few ways, and it left me less satisfied than I would have liked。 However, it is by no means a bad book, it just simply didn't work for me。 。。。more
