A heart-wrenching, emotionally gripping read for fans of Liane Moriarty and Diane Chamberlain

Maggie is married to Massimo's brother, Nico, and lives with him and her troubled stepdaughter。 She knows all of Nico's darkest secrets---or so she thinks。 Then one day she discovers a letter in the attic that reveals a shocking secret about Nico's first wife。 Will Maggie set the record straight or keep silent to protect those she loves?

Anna, the mother; Massimo, the oldest son and his wife, Lara and their son Sandro; Nico, the widowed son, and his daughter, Francesca。 Enter Maggie Parker, a seamstress from the wrong side of the tracks and her son, Sam, and mother, Beryl。 Maggie has the audacity to marry Nico and and things quickly go south。 The F。 family thinks she is a gold digger and Francesca is openly rude and disrespectful。 Nico is a milksop who won’t stand up to anyone。 He allows both his family and his daughter to treat Maggie like crap。 Massimo is an abusive, male chauvinist who still somehow seems charming to Maggie。 Say what? His wife, Lara, is also a milksop who won’t stand up to her abusive husband。 So, who is the silent wife? Maggie, who has a strong inner personality and is always inwardly criticizing and wise cracking on her new family but does nothing to stand up for herself? Or is it Lara, who lives in fear of Massimo but again, only has inner monologues about what a jerk he is? Bottom line is this: I can’t stand the way women are portrayed in this book as spineless, accommodating doormats (with the exception of Beryl, who doesn’t give a flip about all the pretense)。 And the men are either cruel and chauvinistic, or clueless and ineffectual。 In fact, every character in this book needs extensive psychotherapy (except Beryl)。 But instead, they live happily ever after? What a joke! 。。。more

Wow this book was a trip。 The author’s writing style wasn’t my favorite, but her storyline really dragged me in。 I enjoyed the different characters。 I loved that each chapter bounced back and forth between the two wives in the family。 I loved the character growth。

The Silent Wife was a relative fast read with somewhat redundant passages in several chapters, but I still enjoyed it。

I knew better than to start reading this book, but I did it anyway。 I was up far too late finishing it! This is one of those books where you are given enough clues to know what is going to happen ahead of time, but you just can't help watching it unfold like a train wreck。 Side note: What happened to Lupo?!? This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I finally finished this book! Massimo is married to Lara。 He is an abusive controlling husband。 His brother is Nico who was married to Caitlyn who died。 Nico remarried Maggie。 Maggie finds out that Massimo had an affair with Caitlyn。 She can’t tell anyone especially Nico’s daughter Francesca (who really hates Maggie)。 It’s drama and drawn out。 It’s in another country and you have other phrases to try to figure out。 Some parts were good, others were long and boring。 Not a book I needed to read。 I I finally finished this book! The Silent Wife is told from the perspective of two women who had married into the same family。 Despite having to negotiate an overbearing and overly critical mother in law, these two women (eventually) find common ground and start to unravel the dark family secrets。 TSW is well written, and the characters do feel believable, however the pacing of this book leaves a lot to be desired。 Rather than creating a slow building suspense, the first half of the book is frustratingly dull。I was able to pu The Silent Wife is told from the perspective of two women who had married into the same family。 Despite having to negotiate an overbearing and overly critical mother in law, these two women (eventually) find common ground and start to unravel the dark family secrets。 TSW is well written, and the characters do feel believable, however the pacing of this book leaves a lot to be desired。 Rather than creating a slow building suspense, the first half of the book is frustratingly dull。I was able to put it down one night and forget to pick it up for a few months。 When I eventually did come back to it, it was easy enough to dip back into, yet I was quickly reminded of why it was discarded in the first place。 I just wanted to shake the two main characters and tell them to communicate with each other to move the story along。 Many chapters could have been condensed or struck all together, as they do little but repeat events established earlier。 In the last 1/3-1/4 of the book some conflict does happen, but the resolution is so quick and characters so instantly changed that it doesn't feel earned。 In summary, good characters, bad pacing, unsatisfying resolution。 However the writing itself was engaging enough for me to want to try another of this author's books to see what else she can do。 。。。more

There wasn't anything particularly wrong with this book, I think the author did a great job portraying situations that happen so frequently in families。。。 affairs, death, abuse, blended families。 I think I was just left wanting more even though you get the happy ending, as though there should have been a few more twists to get there or a more complicated journey。 As several reviewers mentioned, the old title "The Secrets of Second Wives" would have been more fitting for this story。 There were ch There wasn't anything particularly wrong with this book, I think the author did a great job portraying situations that happen so frequently in families。。。 affairs, death, abuse, blended families。 I think I was just left wanting more even though you get the happy ending, as though there should have been a few more twists to get there or a more complicated journey。 As several reviewers mentioned, the old title "The Secrets of Second Wives" would have been more fitting for this story。 There were characters I loved, like Maggie and her mother of course, and many of the characters felt relatable。。。 you could probably think of someone who reminded you of them and I think that was the author's point。 To portray situations and people that most readers could sympathize with and understand。 Overall, it was an engaging read。 。。。more

Excellent readExcellent read and allows the reader to reflect that you may not really know what is going on in someone’s life and how well people can mask it。

Although this was not my typical “go to” scary mystery book, i highly enjoyed it。 The book is wrote in two perspectives: Maggie- the woman married Nico (a man who’s first wife was Ill and passed away leaving him with a daughter)And Lara- a woman who is married to Nicos brother, Massimo。While Maggie was adjusting to moving her son, Sam and herself into the house where Nico and his Ill wife lived she had to not only learn to adjust to living in a house full of memories but also adjust to a daughte Although this was not my typical “go to” scary mystery book, i highly enjoyed it。 The book is wrote in two perspectives: Maggie- the woman married Nico (a man who’s first wife was Ill and passed away leaving him with a daughter)And Lara- a woman who is married to Nicos brother, Massimo。While Maggie was adjusting to moving her son, Sam and herself into the house where Nico and his Ill wife lived she had to not only learn to adjust to living in a house full of memories but also adjust to a daughter in law and mother in law who did not want to accept her。 Everything she says is wrong。 While Maggie was clearing out the attic to make into a space she could call her own she found something。 Something that she knew she had to keep a secret to protect the new family she loved。 As this ate at her she believed she was making the best decision at that time and made an oath she would keep this a secret and trash what she found。 Lara, who Maggie thinks is up tight and has the perfect life and perfect family being married to Massimo with their son Sandro。 It’s actually the opposite。 Sometimes what you see looking in from the outside isn’t always the truth。 Lara’s life and family is far from perfect。 Lara tries to be the best wife and mother she can while walking on egg shells。 Her Husband Massimo seems to be the picture perfect husband。 He’s handsome, shows Lara affection in public, appears to be good with their son Sandro and seems to go out of his way for his family。 Lara from the outside perspective appears to be up tight, super clingy and over bearing to her son。 Little do they know that Lara is hanging on by a thread。 Lara and Maggie find a common ground and as their friendship grows, things start coming to the surface and pieces of the puzzle are starting to come together。This author did an amazing job at showing us that life isn’t always as it seems from the outside and secrets aren’t always secrets we should keep。I will say, the beginning introduces you to a lot of characters so it took me two chapters to get all the characters down on who was with who。 。。。more

Maybe 4⭐️is a bit generous, but I barreled through this book because I wanted to know what happens。 I liked most of the characters, disliked the ones that were meant to be disliked。 This book has been on my WTR list for a long time。 I think I read a book with the same title, thinking it was this one。

Like Maggie, Lara is a second wife, so Maggie hopes they will become an allies and friends。 Joining the family is not the smooth ride that Maggie hopes for – her new stepdaughter is openly hostile, her mother-in-law disapproving and Lara is aloof。 Maggie eventually and slowly begins to feel accepted, but when she discovers a secret, the fragile family relationships she has painstakingly started building come crashing down as things unravel and threaten to tear the Farinelli family's lives apart。 Told in the alternate voices of Maggie and Lara, this came up on a list of books I might like so I thought I'd take a punt。 I found the characters to be well written, albeit that not all of them were very likeable, although I loved Maggie's feisty Mum! There are trigger warnings for this book as it deals with controlling relationships and abuse。 Whilst not quite as gripping as B A Paris's Behind Closed Doors on this score, it was a well written and enjoyable story from an author who is new to me。 。。。more

A very good read! Two wives, both second wives to strong Italian men, have their share of difficulties in their marriages。 Maggie is personable and outgoing but struggling with being the second wife when the first is still so missed and revered。 Lara is closed off and rigid but we find out why she behaves as she does is a result of her unhappy marriage to Massimo, one of the strong Italian brothers。 The characters really came alive for me as the author painted them with their words and actions。 A very good read! 3。5 stars this read more like a novel than a mystery/thriller。I enjoyed this cast of characters, especially Maggie。 It felt like Nicos character lacked depth but maybe that was intentional to draw more focus to the female characters? Also the advertisement on the book’s cover “would you risk everything for the man you loved?” Seems to have been printed on the wrong book because it had nothing to do with the plot!
