Summary

Ashley Poston, acclaimed author of Heart of Iron, returns with a dark, lush fairy tale-inspired fantasy for fans of Sara Raasch and Susan Dennard。

Cerys is safe in the Kingdom of Aloriya。 Here there are no droughts, disease, or famine, and peace is everlasting。 It has been this way for hundreds of years, since the first king made a bargain with the Lady who ruled the forest that borders the kingdom。 But as Aloriya prospered, the woods grew dark, cursed, and forbidden。

Cerys knows this all too well: When she was young, she barely escaped as the woods killed her friends and her mother。 Now Cerys carries a small bit of the curse--the magic--in her blood, a reminder of the day she lost everything。

As a new queen is crowned, however, things long hidden in the woods descend on the kingdom itself。 Cerys is forced on the run, her only companions a small and irritating fox from the royal garden and the magic in her veins。 It's up to her to find the legendary Lady of the Wilds and beg for a way to save her home。

But the road is darker and more dangerous than she knows, and as secrets from the past are uncovered amid the teeth and roots of the forest, it's going to take everything she has just to survive。

This was a very charming novel with likable characters and vivid imagery。 While the style definitely calls back to many classic Grimm fairytales, the story still engages the modern reader。

I liked the Fox character。 I liked the premise。 I just wasn't a huge fan of how things were carried out。 I suppose too many people not questioning things the way they have always been and the way they will always be。 I liked the Fox character。 I liked the premise。 I just wasn't a huge fan of how things were carried out。 I suppose too many people not questioning things the way they have always been and the way they will always be。 。。。more

Ugh, I'm sorry, but this book just wasn't very good。 There were a few scenes that showed promise, but it wasn't enough to save this book。 One of the biggest problems was the numerous editing mistakes。 I remember this being a problem in Dorothy Must Die, the editing was shocking。For instance in this book we have Fox walking through the forest。 He says that he took his uncomfortable boots off and left them behind, because he would rather go bearfoot。 Then in the very next scene Fox is nudging Cari Ugh, I'm sorry, but this book just wasn't very good。 There were a few scenes that showed promise, but it wasn't enough to save this book。 One of the biggest problems was the numerous editing mistakes。 I remember this being a problem in Dorothy Must Die, the editing was shocking。For instance in this book we have Fox walking through the forest。 He says that he took his uncomfortable boots off and left them behind, because he would rather go bearfoot。 Then in the very next scene Fox is nudging Caris with the toe of his boot to wake her up。 And these mistakes just went on and on, making me really frustrated, because these mistakes could have been avoided。 Then the whole fox/prince thing was so obvious, that you saw it coming from a mile away。 If I had a gold coin for every time Caris said "I'm just a gardener's daughter" I would have been rich, it really grated on my nerves。 There were so many plots that were begun, and then just left abandoned, instead choosing boring or nonsensical conclusions。What I disliked the most was that the one thing you really really want to know, the book doesn't bother to tell you。And the ending was extremely bland with there being no real cost for the horrific events that took place in the book。 I found this book on a top 10 stand alone fantasy novels。 I can assure you that sadly it does not belong on that list。 My advice is to not bother with this book。 。。。more

This was an absolute joy to read! It’s such a well written story with tragic pasts (one of them actually made me cry) to propell the plot and motives, terrifyingly visceral, heart-pounding action scenes, balanced out with fluffy romance, fun dialogue, and of course: Disney level rapport between a girl and her fox。 Also… the eventual introduction of a new narrator had me downright squealing。 Sure some “plot twists” weren’t so surprising, but they made sense, they held serious weight, and even onc This was an absolute joy to read! Gets lost in the woods after running to save someone who screamed。 Not even going to lie, it's just such a lazy journey book since every chapter ended with one not being able to find the other。 That's it。 That's the book。 A long winded down trek through the forest and getting lost constantly despite promising to do better。 Every chapter end was just 'He suddenly didn't see her!' and the next began with 'wham, there she is。 Screaeming and throwing her blood everywhere。'Second thing, this author knows absolutely nothing about chemistry。 It was so dreary and wasteful to write a romance this grey。 He just makes puns because。。 and the readers weren't even shown this earlier。。 she loves it。 And puns are never to be mentioned again。 The jokes are cheesy and all about turning foxes into hats and whether someone likes fox and that he eats too much。 Dude, who even could SHIP Them in the first place?Honestly, it felt like beastiality to me when the prince first turned, rather than 'oh-kiss-a-frog-get-a-prince' type storiesKnow why> Cause the author made him so much like a fox, and so sure that he was never human。 That all his life, he was just a fox that even the THOUGHT of shipping a fox that Daisy cared for was disgusting and humiliating to any character。 This 'Fox' guy would constantly moan that he's a fox and shouldn't do etc etc that turning him back would be a mercy and better storyline。 Yet he would say 'fuck' and 'shit' and t think in this weird way that shouldn't be in a foxees vocabulary。 Only half-way, or 3/4, was there any care into thinking that wow, maybe he was the prince。And honestly, WHY would the woods turn anyone into a fox just because? The storyline of the main crown being lost and some lady of the Wilds was just written off with no care; the questions raised were not even from the reader's POV and just pushed in。 Honestly, ain't it。 。。。more

The author created some great moments between the main characters in terms of chemistry guilt through witty humor— my favorite kind of banter and relationship-builder。 In terms of plot pace, it felt slow but when there was action, it felt incredibly rushed…so I did not see a great sense of rhythm。 I wish we could have had more time to see the relationship between the two main characters build…there wasn’t much left to be revealed to the reader as any mystery felt quickly unraveled。 Overall, I di The author created some great moments between the main characters in terms of chemistry guilt through witty humor— my favorite kind of banter and relationship-builder。 In terms of plot pace, it felt slow but when there was action, it felt incredibly rushed…so I did not see a great sense of rhythm。 I wish we could have had more time to see the relationship between the two main characters build…there wasn’t much left to be revealed to the reader as any mystery felt quickly unraveled。 Overall, I did think the premise of the story was good and enjoyed some of the dialogue。 。。。more
