This was a sweet book, and a great follow up to the author’s first title, I’ll Be the One! It’s not related, but it’s in the same world so it was fun to hear the first book referenced。The romance in this was sweet to read, and the ending brought tears to my eyes。 I loved the Korean setting and the KDrama aspect of the story, too! It was a lot of fun。

"Things like 'this is our day 1' seemed so corny when I saw couples talk about it in K-dramas, but getting that message from someone I care about makes my entire day。"This book was so sweet, like ice cream and milk tea and marshmallows! It was a really easy and fun read that felt light-hearted and free。 Hana and Minjee are the cutest, I found myself feeling all those feelings of falling in love for the first time again🥺 And their little friendship trio with Bryan is so heartwarming to see。 I fou "Things like 'this is our day 1' seemed so corny when I saw couples talk about it in K-dramas, but getting that message from someone I care about makes my entire day。"This book was so sweet, like ice cream and milk tea and marshmallows! Lastly, I love the LGBTQ+ representation in this and adding it to a Kdrama setting just makes it even more perfect! 💖Thank you Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review! 。。。more

'Flip the Script' by Lyla Lee is a clean romance novel set in modern day South Korea starring Jin Hana - a Koren-American teenager who moved to South Korea to pursue her dream of K-Drama stardom and is finally getting her big break。 Unfortunately, her drama series isn't going so well which means the production company is suggesting she fake-date her co-star Bryan and bring on another female lead to create a love-triangle。 Hana realises pretty quickly that it's Minjee - her friend and the second 'Flip the Script' by Lyla Lee is a clean romance novel set in modern day South Korea starring Jin Hana - a Koren-American teenager who moved to South Korea to pursue her dream of K-Drama stardom and is finally getting her big break。 Unfortunately, her drama series isn't going so well which means the production company is suggesting she fake-date her co-star Bryan and bring on another female lead to create a love-triangle。 Hana realises pretty quickly that it's Minjee - her friend and the second female lead - who she likes rather than the traditional choice of K-Pop star Bryan。 The romance in 'Flip the Script' is sweet and fluffy as the two girls come together through misunderstandings and rivalries。 The background and politics surrounding each decision and the friendship/romance on display made this so interesting to read。 As someone who is a very, very casual K-Drama/K-Pop fan a lot of the information was new to me - S。Korean fans are scary! On the other hand, I did find the characters very flat compared to the tension going on with the show。 Bryan falls in love with Hana pretty quickly for no reason and we see very little of Minjee’s conflict with her parents。 Tensions are resolved pretty easily or not built into properly and everything is very pastel。If you're looking for a fun, easy romance where two people take on the world then I think you will find everything to like in 'Flip the Script'。 If you like more tension and inter-personal drama in your romance then I would give this one a miss。 。。。more

I didn't love this one as much as I adored I'll Be the One, mainly because I wanted more of Minjee (and more of her personality to show on the page)。 I wanted MORE。But it was still really great, and had a really awesome discussion of homophobia in Korea。I also really loved a lot of the adult figures (the good ones) in the show: Sophia, and Hana's mom and dad。 And, to a smaller extent, Director Cha and Mr。 Choi。Full RTC。I received this ARC from NetGalley for an honest review I didn't love this one as much as I adored I'll Be the One, mainly because I wanted more of Minjee (and more of her personality to show on the page)。 I wanted MORE。But it was still really great, and had a really awesome discussion of homophobia in Korea。I also really loved a lot of the adult figures (the good ones) in the show: Sophia, and Hana's mom and dad。 And, to a smaller extent, Director Cha and Mr。 Choi。Full RTC。I received this ARC from NetGalley for an honest review 。。。more

Enter her school rival, Park Minjee。 As Minjee and Hana compete on-screen to be Bryan’s love interest, behind the scenes, they find themselves falling for each other… But in a conservative society like Korea, can their relationship survive? This was my first time reading a K-drama/K-pop romance, and I enjoyed it! Not only was it unapologetically queer, but it also unapologetically displayed South Korean culture。 The descriptions of cultural landmarks were so vibrant and I found myself really wishing I could visit Seoul! The romance between Minjee and Hana was really cute, although I wished we could get more development。 I also really like Bryan, though I don’t really understand why Hana doesn’t like him at first。 I did think the ending was kind of cheesy, but Hana’s speech at the end had me tearing up。 I want this book to become popular in K-pop and K-drama communities, because it addresses why queer representation is important, and how Korean society stifles it。 Overall, while this book could have used more development of certain character relationships and plotlines, it was a cute and empowering read! 。。。more

Thank you, Katherine Tegen Books, for allowing me to read Flip the Script early! This was extremely fun and cute, with an interesting premise that delivered from every angle! I loved our two protagonists and the juxtaposition of love/hate between real life and the K-drama。 Lyla Lee definitely crafted a splendid book。

I received an advance reader's copy from the publisher。 Flip the Script is an adorable queer romance that will undoubtedly tick all the boxes on a certain reader's wishlist (read: mine)。 A fast, light yet poignant read, I devoured it in less than 24 hours, and this will definitely be one I return to when I'm feeling like I need a book palate cleanser。 I was a little apprehensive going in, as my knowledge of the worlds of K-drama and K-pop are admittedly very limited, but I didn't feel like Lee e I received an advance reader's copy from the publisher。 Flip the Script is an adorable queer romance that will undoubtedly tick all the boxes on a certain reader's wishlist (read: mine)。 A fast, light yet poignant read, I devoured it in less than 24 hours, and this will definitely be one I return to when I'm feeling like I need a book palate cleanser。 I was a little apprehensive going in, as my knowledge of the worlds of K-drama and K-pop are admittedly very limited, but I didn't feel like Lee either spoke down to me or left me confused, for which I was grateful。 Readers who are already K-drama fans won't need these explanations, but Lee keeps them succinct and it doesn't take you out of the story, so I don't think they are too obtrusive。 The trio of main characters are all very distinct, and while at first I couldn't quite see what made Hana fall for a certain character, as the story progressed this became more clear。 All three immediately make you interested and care about them while still very much being teenagers。 If I have any suggestions, I found that sometimes I wanted more insight from Hana on various subjects。 I didn't quite understand why she found Bryan so annoying at the beginning of the book, and sometimes she states how she's feeling without going into much detail as to why or what the specifics are。 That being said, I don't think it detracts from the story being told, and there are definitely points where Hana's succinctness is appropriate - it might actually be difficult to walk that line had Lee tried to do so。 The ending ties everything up very neatly, and while I'd normally say that isn't a good thing, I think it works well here with these characters and this story。 The story finishes off just as strongly as the rest of the book, and that's a rare find in cases like this; I didn't feel like there was a rush to get to the end nor was there an unnecessarily extended ending。 If you're interested in queer YA romance, this is a fantastic representation of that。 The backdrop of Seoul and K-drama is one that makes for a unique spin, and I think it'll be right up the alley of a lot of readers。 。。。more

Hana will have to find it in herself to be brave enough to stand up for who she is and who she loves in an industry that does not look kindly to queer individuals, especially when pressure from the higher ups could completely ruin her career but the career of those she cares about。 This was a sweet and cute story about finding the courage to stand up for who you are and who you love。 As a huge k-drama fan myself it was so much fun to see hints of other K-drama shows mentioned and how realistic the pressures Hana was under。 Her relationship with Minjee was adorable and so sweet, seriously Minjee is amazing。 Her friendship with Bryan was just as cute and fun! This was so sweet! I flew through it, and it made me smile so much。 Hana, Minjee, and Bryan are all such great characters, and I loved watching the dynamics between and among them change over the course of the story。 And even though the book generally very light, it has some serious discussions about homophobia in Korean culture that I can tell are going to mean a lot to so many readers。CW: homophobia, outing of queer characters

I absolutely loved reading about South Korea and it’s locations, not to mention the chaotic world of K-Dramas and our powerful, funny, and kindhearted protagonists I want to cradle and protect。 The queer representation also added the perfect touch。 It was so refreshing to see a spin (or FLIP *enter comedic disappointment now*) of the classic girl falls in love with major K-pop idol and has to keep it a secret mold (which don’t get me wrong I still absolutely love, ahem XOXO by Axie Oh and I’ll Be the One)。 I will admit I had very high expectations for this novel because of Ill Be the One, since it’s become one of my favorite books of all time, but let me tell you it did not disappoint! My only critique is that I wish we got to see and understand Minjee’s character more, she was always fun during her scenes but as for her personality and interests we’re in the dark。 Especially compared to the complexity (and utter awesomeness) of Hana and Bryan。 Not saying I don’t love Minjee though, she is my badass lesbian queen。 Overall, this was amazing and I totally recommend it to every K-pop Stan, K-drama fanatic and everyone who wants to have a fun time while seeing the power of queer teenagers!
