I saw the movie several years ago featuring Anne Bancroft! Finally read the book because I could not let the feeling go - a feeling that needs to be captured。 The world could use more of this - perhaps lost。

Curioso libro que recopila el discurrir de una curiosa historia。 Ligero y recomendable。 La biografía final es el colofón a un buen relato。

What a heart warming little novella! I wasn't sure I'd like the writing style (as its a series of letters), but I really enjoyed this story。 What a heart warming little novella! I wasn't sure I'd like the writing style (as its a series of letters), but I really enjoyed this story。 。。。more

This a little uplifting book recommendation from my side for anyone in need of magical and cosy stories。“84 Charing Cross Road” by Helene Hanff provides one of these pleasant reading experiences。 It is a true story written by real life events; this tale is both life-affirming and sad but still a real treat for all the bibliophiles。This gem consists of letters written between an American writer, Helene Hanff and a British bookseller, Frank Doel and other employees of Marks & Co Bookshop in London This a little uplifting book recommendation from my side for anyone in need of magical and cosy stories。“84 Charing Cross Road” by Helene Hanff provides one of these pleasant reading experiences。 It is a true story written by real life events; this tale is both life-affirming and sad but still a real treat for all the bibliophiles。This gem consists of letters written between an American writer, Helene Hanff and a British bookseller, Frank Doel and other employees of Marks & Co Bookshop in London which was based in Charing Cross Road。 Their correspondence overspanned the period of twenty years, between 1949 and 1968。 Sadly, Frank died in 1968 without ever having an opportunity to meet Helene in person。This little book is about developing a long-distance friendship between two people by the means of letters。 Over two decades, they had exchanged gifts, recipes, ideas on books and current world events。 What started as an inquiry about one book that Helene was unable to find in New York City, it turned into a magical relationship between two unique souls connected by their love for words and stories。There is not much of an action in this books, you just have to read it and enjoy it。Following Frank’s death, Helene finally visited London in 1971。 At that time Marks & Co Bookshop was already closed (it was closed in 1970)。 Today there is a plaque on the building in which Marks & Co Bookshop was once based。 These days the building is occupied by a well-known fast food restaurant and there is no trace of the bookshop。I would highly recommend this book and the movie under the same title starring Anthony Hopkins and Anne Bancroft。 They both complement each other, and it is a great idea to first read a book followed by the movie。 If you are unable to get a copy of the book, then try to watch a movie which is very moving and reflects the idea of the book beautifully。“84 Charing Cross Road” is a compelling story which will warm your heart and will give your soul a ‘necessary touch of magic’ so desperately needed in currentIf you enjoy 84 Charing Cross Road, I would also highly recommend you A Bookshop in Algiers by Kaouther Adimi 。。。more

The corporate, capitalistic, hypertech world we live in has, in some respects, sucked aliveness out of the things it promises to enhance: networking and uninterrupted presence。This is not to say that Hanff's letter assemblage necessarily makes for a nostalgic flashback to an obliterated past that tends towards a wishful recovery of it。 But it does stir a very human longing for a simple bond of friendship sustained notwithstanding the 50s-60s perception of distance (New York / London)。 A distance that is not merely geographical but also temperamental。 Because Helene Hanff and Frank Doel could not be more different if they tried。 Helen is a writer who has to constantly wait on commissioned work to make ends meet, in this not very different from Frank Doel, her chief correspondent and bookseller at Marks & Co。 on Charing Cross Road。 Quintessential quirkiness on the one hand, self-contained British reserve on the other, the two wonderfully maintain contact from year to year, usually initiated by some peculiar book request on Helene's part, or Frank's responses to her old requests。 It is, therefore, their variously manifested life passion for rare books that nourishes communication between them。 Except that, in time, they warm up to each others' ways, and come to delight in the correspondence, to some extent participating in each others' lives。 Helene's plan to visit England never quite materialises, but others from London (Frank's wife and colleagues amongst others) cannot resist getting in touch with her from time to time。 Because Helene is also extremely generous and vibrant。 Opinionated, no doubt, but so candid and likeable。 And, of course, she likes to affectionately taunt Frank, who is not as uptight as one would be apt to think and reciprocates with care and attention。I certainly kept wanting to read more of her whimsical letters, much like her correspondents。 It did sadden me somewhat to think about their long intervals of silence, and yet each letter comes across as the rightful continuation to its former counterparts。 The mark of true friendship。4 stars。 Highly recommended to all readers。 。。。more

What a short but lovely book! Helene was a delightful, warm, and considerate lover of books。。。 Not fiction though, with the exception of Jane Austen。 Ha! Her humor would warm up anyone, as it clearly did with Frank。 I was so bummed though she never made the trip after so many years of correspondence。 She really didn't like to leave her home。 What a short but lovely book! The unbearable incompleteness of being。Like an old, torn out book you find behind your grandpa's bookcase, this book is incomplete。 Not in a physical sense, of course, but there are noticeable gaps that just tore at me。 For example, within the hundred or so letters included in the book, there are events that are not touched upon, there are missing letters and sometimes entire months or years where no letters are exchanged。 The Queen's coronation is mentioned but not the moon landing or the JFK a The unbearable incompleteness of being。Like an old, torn out book you find behind your grandpa's bookcase, this book is incomplete。 Not in a physical sense, of course, but there are noticeable gaps that just tore at me。 For example, within the hundred or so letters included in the book, there are events that are not touched upon, there are missing letters and sometimes entire months or years where no letters are exchanged。 The Queen's coronation is mentioned but not the moon landing or the JFK assassination, for example, events that even now are talked about。 Were they left out during an edit, were they not proper for a casual letter or were they just busy with their lives and this letter exchange was left on the back burner?Sadly, it might just be the latter, judging from the second half of the book。 Conversations are started but not finished, letters are written yet not replied to and that trip to England keeps getting mentioned until it too fades。 I read this book in one sitting and while it started light and funny, it ended, for me, on a deep note of melancholy。 A correspondence of 20 years gradually going out, yet still ending abruptly。 I enjoyed every moment of it and yet I felt like yelling at their foolishness, as this kind of soft connection that slowly evolves is no longer achievable in our instant-messaging world。 And somehow the same follies carry on within us - relationships fade away, trips are not taken and busy schedules triumph over meaningful moments。Maybe I've read too much into it, maybe not, maybe I'm projecting my own ideas, but I can't deny it was a great read that moved me。 。。。more

I would give this book 3 1/2 stars。 It was good, but it didn’t have a plot。 It was just a collection of letters between the author and many people she met through letters from a bookstore in London。 It was interesting and sweet, but with no plot it’s not a book I would re read。
