Summary

Finlay Donovan is killing it 。 。 。 except, she’s really not。 She’s a stressed-out single-mom of two and struggling novelist, Finlay’s life is in chaos: the new book she promised her literary agent isn’t written, her ex-husband fired the nanny without telling her, and this morning she had to send her four-year-old to school with hair duct-taped to her head after an incident with scissors。

When Finlay is overheard discussing the plot of her new suspense novel with her agent over lunch, she’s mistaken for a contract killer, and inadvertently accepts an offer to dispose of a problem husband in order to make ends meet 。 。 。 Soon, Finlay discovers that crime in real life is a lot more difficult than its fictional counterpart, as she becomes tangled in a real-life murder investigation。

Fast-paced, deliciously witty, and wholeheartedly authentic in depicting the frustrations and triumphs of motherhood in all its messiness, hilarity, and heartfelt moment, Finlay Donovan Is Killing It is the first in a brilliant new series from YA Edgar Award nominee Elle Cosimano。

I DNF this book at 137 pages。 It just 。。。。 wasn’t for me。 It’s kind of dark? Not a fan! I’m sure lots of other people are tho and that’s fine :)

This book was such a fun and unique murder mystery that I burned through in one sitting。 👍🏻 I loved the dynamic between Finlay and Vero。 They quickly became each other’s ride or die and I was here for it。 I thought the whole accidental hit man concept was clever and it definitely kept me engaged and wanting to read on to find out who dunnit。 Also, that epilogue 🤯🤯👎🏻 I was so curious to find out what actually happened in the garage and I felt the reveal was brief and anti-climactic?? I know there was a lot of other action going on but would have loved some more details about that。 I also didn’t laugh out loud as much as I had anticipated 🤷🏻‍♀️ I saw a lot of reviews claiming it was really funny but I could not relate。 Regardless of the down points, I thought this was a super fun read! I could definitely see this turned into a movie。 。。。more

Oh my god。 This was laugh out loud funny。 This is a lot like the Stephanie Plum books, with frazzled, over her head main character and a rocking side kick。 But, this isn't as。。。 Over the top? Stephanie Plum was a little on the absurd side。 Which I guess worked since it was set in New Jersey。 But at some point the story began to spiral and it became less funny and more annoying。 Things got too ridiculous。 I'm hoping Cosimano doesn't make that same mistake with her own books。 If Cosimano can keep Oh my god。 This was laugh out loud funny。 This is a lot like the Stephanie Plum books, with frazzled, over her head main character and a rocking side kick。 But, this isn't as。。。 Over the top? I can't put my finger on it, but I just didn't love the book。 The heroine, Finlay, I found rather obnoxious。 The sidekick, Vero, IMO is the star character。 She's got it together at 22 with tricks up her sleeve and sass。This book was set up for #2, I'm sure it's in the works。 I can't put my finger on it, but I just didn't love the book。 The heroine, Finlay, I found rather obnoxious。 The sidekick, Vero, IMO is the star character。 She's got it together at 22 with tricks up her sleeve and sass。This book was set up for #2, I'm sure it's in the works。 。。。more

I was skeptical for some reason about this book。 The premise seemed ridiculous。 But it was so beyond any of that。 It was funny and we'll written and I hope Finlay and Vero come back。 I was skeptical for some reason about this book。 The premise seemed ridiculous。 But it was so beyond any of that。 It was funny and we'll written and I hope Finlay and Vero come back。 。。。more

I。 Love。 Mystery! Always have。 I secretly want to be a detective for a season 🤣。 But I love a clean mystery and that is hard to come by。 Sherlock and Agatha are my favorites! But this contemporary work was amazing! I never knew what was coming。 It was funny, suspenseful and overall clean! One of my favorite reads this year。

Yes, it's a little over the top and dramatic but this may be a perfect lazy day book。 It's so much fun and the pace moves quickly。Warning (because I didn't realize) that it's the first book in a series, so there's setup for the next one at the end, but this does feel complete on its own。 Yes, it's a little over the top and dramatic but this may be a perfect lazy day book。 It's so much fun and the pace moves quickly。Warning (because I didn't realize) that it's the first book in a series, so there's setup for the next one at the end, but this does feel complete on its own。 。。。more

Five plus glorious stars - OMG I loved this novel。 Great mystery that also had some laugh out loud moments。 Finlay Donavan is my hero and I love her。 Can’t wait for the next one and I think I read it will become a TV series- that will be so much fun to watch。 This novel is in my top 5 for 2021 - thanks to the great reviewers on Goodreads, the reviews intrigued me and I just had to pick the novel up and see for myself it was up to the hype - surpassed all expectations。

I love this book, just purely love it so much。 I adore this unique, original, refreshing story filled with lots of expectations and surprises and unpredictability。 It is such an amazing book that I hardly could put it down。Finlay Donovan, wow, a woman struggling with paying the bills, the children, a tight deadline now is forced to become a contracted killer? I’m all in。 Finlay, the sassy woman who is so underestimated by many people around her, especially by her cheating ex husband and his fiancee。 She is impressionable and clever。 She is charming, though she doesn’t realizes it。 She is resourceful, well, maybe a little too hesitant sometimes。But it is Vero who is my absolutely favorite character in this book。 This girl, I’m telling you, is worth my idolizing。 Vero is even more resourceful than Finlay and she is, on the contrary to Finlay, very determined。 She is the person who speaks loudly, the representative for Finlay herself。 She is the voice of the unheard (Finlay) and she is protective of Finley and Finley’s children。 She is caring, sharp and has humor。 She finds solutions and pushes through it。 She is strong, and brave。 The story goes in so many directions that I at first found it hard to follow。 So many things happen at once that I was unable to predict the possible outcome。 Not only was I intrigued by the cluster of mysteries here (all of them are connected but the link is so vague!) but I was also drawn into the interaction, the banter between the characters, especially between Finlay and Vero。 They are such a compatible pair who makes even the most boring story interesting。 They make me laugh, they make me smile。 Sometimes I felt the story is not too serious because of the tone and the fact that our heroin is forced into a very unbelievable situation。 But there are in fact of lot of stakes here, putting Finlay and people she love at risk。 Of course, I couldn’t guess the culprit。 I also couldn’t figure out the ending this story would take, although it is true that there are hints here and there。 It is just the ridiculousness of the situation that diverts me from the real clues。 Such talented writing! What I don’t like about this book is the professional competence of the police character。 He is clever, I don’t deny that。 But why does he keep involving Finlay in the investigation, to the point where he even intimates her with such classified information about the ongoing case? Why does a detective tell everything about the case to a civilian? It doesn’t make sense to me。 And he even blames Finlay for his own fault! I think he should be fired。 Right now。 He involves Finlay and he has the audacity to be mad at her when he finds a clue about Finlay’s ex husband。 Such a hypocrite。 I hate him。 Anyway, you will regret if you don’t read this book。 。。。more

This book was fun! I thought this was an original story and it made me laugh。 Finlay is a recent single mother and struggling to write her book, deal with her kids, her ex-husband & his snooty fiancé, pay her bills, & life in general。 Her life is pretty much in chaos & she gets herself mixed up in a real life murder & the investigation。 There’s good mystery & suspense too。

A quirky, fun read。 I found part of the resolution a bit unsatisfying, but enjoyed following Finn and her questionable and sometimes cringe-worthy decisions。 In the author's note, Cosimano shares the premise of the book came from a conversation in her own life - I always find that interesting。 A quirky, fun read。 I found part of the resolution a bit unsatisfying, but enjoyed following Finn and her questionable and sometimes cringe-worthy decisions。 In the author's note, Cosimano shares the premise of the book came from a conversation in her own life - I always find that interesting。 。。。more

Ridiculous, over the top, juicy, fun, hilarious。 Am I missing anything? Oh my gosh, this is a case where bookstagram has it right。 The book totally lives up to the hype, I promise! The book was highly entertaining, and although it’s not quite a thriller, but not quite a cozy mystery either, it’s a fun mix!I would save this book to read for when you feel like you’re in a slump, or you just need a really light book in between darker books。 You definitely need to be in a certain mood for this, but Ridiculous, over the top, juicy, fun, hilarious。 Am I missing anything? Finlay Donovan Is Killing It is a book I have been hearing about all over Bookstagram, which is how it got on my radar。 I knew this had to be moved to the top of my to be read pile and let me tell you I wasn't disappointed。 This book was a fresh take on a mystery and I think it needs to be in its own category where somehow Elle Cosimano managed to add as much humor as she did。 It reminds me of the humor that was in the mystery Dial A for Aunties by Jesse Q。 Sutanto, a book I adored。Finlay is a h Finlay Donovan Is Killing It is a book I have been hearing about all over Bookstagram, which is how it got on my radar。 I knew this had to be moved to the top of my to be read pile and let me tell you I wasn't disappointed。 This book was a fresh take on a mystery and I think it needs to be in its own category where somehow Elle Cosimano managed to add as much humor as she did。 It reminds me of the humor that was in the mystery Dial A for Aunties by Jesse Q。 Sutanto, a book I adored。Finlay is a hot mess that is trying to keep it all together after she finds out her (now ex) husband is cheating on her with their real estate agent。 To make matters worse, he's trying to get full custody of their kids and Finlay can't afford a lawyer。 Everything changes when Finlay is discussing her latest book, a mystery, with her agent。 When someone overhears this conversation and misunderstands it, Finlay is approached as though she is a contract killer。 The next thing Finlay knows, she has a dead man in her garage and has been hired by another woman to kill her husband。 This book was a wild ride and I was sad that I had to put it down and couldn't finish it in one go。 You will not be disappointed if you bump this one up your TBR list。CW: abusive husbands, murder, rape, sexual assault, blackmailThank you to Macmillan Audio for providing me with a complimentary audiobook in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

Very fun kind of mystery, and about consequences of hearing part of a conversation。 A young writer allows her hilarious life leads her to finally breaking through as her career as a fiction writer。

Geisa Costa

Please please please tell me that there is going to have a second book!!!!!!

3 1/2⭐️Clever enough, that’s for sure。 The lead character steps on every landmine in front of her。 It takes another, stronger woman to rescue her, if you can call it a rescue。 It’s a silly fun read。

So much fun — a light mystery with lots of humor packed in

It seems weird to call a book about a contract killer fun, but this was so fun! I loved watching Finlay pick herself up and figure out how to navigate her life。 This was just ridiculous enough to not feel super heavy or scary。

This book just wasn’t for me。 It was extremely unrealistic and I found myself not wanting to pick it up after putting it down。 The characters are bland with little to no development throughout the story, and the plot was mediocre at best。
