Summary

More family drama, more weirdness from Elenore。 A great quick read that reads like a southern family history。

Ok I’m my review of book one of this series, The Flood, I said I felt intrigued and kinda had an idea where this was going…I’m still intrigued but have NO clue what to expect。 I’m really enjoying the familiar southern setting- minus the racist, problematic aspects that come with it- I especially felt warm and fuzzy when I read the part about Alabama business meetings taking place on porch swings or in the light of the moon。 The southern aspects are doing a great job of making me feel comfortable Ok I’m my review of book one of this series, The Flood, I said I felt intrigued and kinda had an idea where this was going…I’m still intrigued but have NO clue what to expect。 I’m really enjoying the familiar southern setting- minus the racist, problematic aspects that come with it- I especially felt warm and fuzzy when I read the part about Alabama business meetings taking place on porch swings or in the light of the moon。 The southern aspects are doing a great job of making me feel comfortable, lowering my defenses, all the while something wicked is brewing。 I haven’t the slightest idea what is happening。 I remember in the first book texting my friends “this better not be mermaids” and a few chapters later “is it SIRENS??” and finally “OMG it’s a witch!!!” I still have no clue if I was right and I love it。 I’m so excited that there are 4 more books。 See you in the next review!! 。。。more

It was a bit lacking in building up the same tenseness as the first one。Still,The second installment is AMAZING!!!!。But can Miss Mary-love for once stop making absolutely terrible and wrong decisions because it makes the supposed evil character(Elinor) in this book seem innocent and its getting on my nerves that everybody is sympathizing with her。

Alex Jones

The plot screeches to a halt to spend more time with secondary characters。 That’s not a bad thing。A character does something so unforgivable that it reshaped my view on both them and their relationships with others。 The red flags were there all along but I didn’t think they’d go that far。 There are no heroes or villains in Perdido, but there is a monster。

Blackwater: II The Levee continues the Caskey saga, focusing on the processes revolving around building the levees that will prevent another flood。 The entire family with the exception of Elinor believe that they are a great way to protect Perdido and ensure that the losses that occurred with the first flood don't happen again。 During this endeavor, Caskey family dramas continuously unfold, strengthening already looming tensions between the family members。 Sinister events continue to take place, Blackwater: II The Levee continues the Caskey saga, focusing on the processes revolving around building the levees that will prevent another flood。 The entire family with the exception of Elinor believe that they are a great way to protect Perdido and ensure that the losses that occurred with the first flood don't happen again。 During this endeavor, Caskey family dramas continuously unfold, strengthening already looming tensions between the family members。 Sinister events continue to take place, making the reader wonder if/when these will all come to a head and affect the Caskey family directly。The second novella in the Blackwater series is a slower go than the first。 Instead of focusing on the supernatural elements within the Caskey family, McDowell instead highlights small town politics that encompass the seemingly never-ending work of building the levees that serve to protect Perdido。 There are some eerie events that transpire but, these are few and far between compared to Blackwater I: The Flood。 While these happen towards the end and tie together the building of the levees and the underlying darkness that has been rooted in both books, I still wish there was more OOMPH in the middle chapters。 Because I have become invested in the Caskey family and their characters, I enjoyed this! If you're more of a plot-driven reader, this will probably be one of the more lackluster books in the Blackwater series for you but, it's necessary for the plot and the spooky ending does make it better。 。。。more

I really enjoy that this has horror elements but they kind of stay in the eerie background。 It's like you forget about it and then boom! Horror is right in your face。 I was a little put off by a character being described as "simple" and basically that they have no actual thoughts。 I know this is published in a time when it is likely how it was presented, but it still doesn't feel good to read about。 I really enjoy that this has horror elements but they kind of stay in the eerie background。 It's like you forget about it and then boom! For a tighter thematic arch plot, I'd have moved the last chapter about the closet to the next section (which appears to be about the girls and the house anyway) and kept the Dedication as climax, with the selling as denouement。That said, I'm still gripped。 For a tighter thematic arch plot, I'd have moved the last chapter about the closet to the next section (which appears to be about the girls and the house anyway) and kept the Dedication as climax, with the selling as denouement。That said, I'm still gripped。 。。。more

With the suth’un melodrama dialled up and the supernatural elements kept firmly in the background (save for a late-in-the-game Grand Guignol set-piece), ‘The Levee’ is a more slow-burn outing than its predecessor, but no less readable or compelling。 New characters are introduced, alliances shift, and nothing quite plays out as expected。 There’s the sense that anything could happen in the subsequent volumes。

Absolutely loving this series。 I need to find more Michael McDowell!

And so the creepiness builds 。 。 。 ritual child sacrifice 。 。 。 a house that becomes haunted before anyone moves in。 As the title suggests, this installment is mostly about the construction of the levee。 Plenty of Southern culture。 Family tensions, racial tensions, class struggles, and business rivalries。 There's a Lovecraftian tinge here, too。 Elinor Dammert could well be from Innsmouth。 And so the creepiness builds 。 。 。 ritual child sacrifice 。 。 。 a house that becomes haunted before anyone moves in。 As the title suggests, this installment is mostly about the construction of the levee。 Plenty of Southern culture。 Family tensions, racial tensions, class struggles, and business rivalries。 There's a Lovecraftian tinge here, too。 Elinor Dammert could well be from Innsmouth。 。。。more

More creepy fun。 This one actually has a couple of moments that I would classify as "true horror" scenes, not just "Southern Gothic creepy。Here we also have a continuing story of the Caskey family and their extended relations。 It centers, of course, on the relationship of the odd Elinor Caskey to the rest of the family。 That they are the richest family in their small town in the early 192os only makes that more interesting。She may not be all that she appears to be, but you'll have to read for mo More creepy fun。 This one actually has a couple of moments that I would classify as "true horror" scenes, not just "Southern Gothic creepy。Here we also have a continuing story of the Caskey family and their extended relations。 It centers, of course, on the relationship of the odd Elinor Caskey to the rest of the family。 That they are the richest family in their small town in the early 192os only makes that more interesting。She may not be all that she appears to be, but you'll have to read for more information。 Grace Caskey is getting older and forming an unpopular attraction to the daughter of the black servant that Mary Love Caskey, the matriarch, cannot abide。 Sister Caskey, Mary Love's daughter, finds a unique way to use a marriage as a weapon against both her mother and Elinor。 Oscar Caskey is still blind to everything going on around him。 And Mary Love's brother James is just befuddled。 He's a nice and introverted man and is often pushed around by the domineering women in the family。 It sounds like all the ingredients of a Southern Gothic are here。The major issue in this is the building of a levee, as the title may give away。 All of the superstitions involving building anything are brought to bear。 In the middle of the story, James's sister-in-law, via his dead wife, shows up needing protection from her abusive husband。 We see that gun early on, so, of course, he shows up later on giving the Caskey men one of their better moments。 I'm still enjoying this, so I'll move on, now, to part 3 of 6。 See you when I've finished。 。。。more
