Summary

Tell me, little butterfly, what would you do for love?

In the wake of a crushing defeat, Tisaanah and Maxatarius have been ripped apart。 Tisaanah is desperate to rescue Max from his imprisonment, even as her people’s fight for freedom grows more treacherous。 But within the walls of Ilyzath, Max’s mind is a shadow of what it once was… leaving his past a mystery and his future at the mercy of Ara’s new, ruthless queen。

Meanwhile, in the Fey lands, Aefe has been dragged back into this world by a king who vows to destroy civilizations in her name。 But even as her past returns to claim her, her former self is a stranger。

Tisaanah, Max, and Aefe are thrust into the center of a cataclysm between the human and Fey worlds。 The unique magic they share is key to either winning the war, or ending it。

But that power demands sacrifice。 Tisaanah may be forced to choose between love and duty。 Max cannot forge his future without confronting his past。 And Aefe must decide between reclaiming who she was, or embracing who she has become。

The choices they make will either reshape this world forever…or end it。。

In the harrowing finale of the War of Lost Hearts trilogy, a tale of romance, magic, vengeance, and redemption comes to a close -- perfect for fans of Sarah J。 Maas, Miranda Honfleur, and Danielle Jenson。

Gut-wrenchingly BeautifulThis series was stunning, beautiful, heart-wrenching and astounding! I both couldn’t wait to get through the book and yet didn’t want it to be over。 What a gift it is to experience so many emotions through a story - beautifully sculpted and a reminder of the gift of life。 I look forward to many more stories from Carissa!

My worst nightmare has been given a human face, but there was nothing human about this thing。 Nothing real, just a power that should never have been allowed to exist。 A tragic person who had been distorted long past a time when she should have been alive, turned into something grotesque。 。。。more

GOD。 This was really good。 The series as a whole was amazing。But the first book put the bar so HIGH, it definitely raised my expectations for the rest of the series。 Book 2 didn’t really live up to it, and this final volume was better BUT… Not as good as Daughter of No Worlds, in my opinion。 I’m being picky, though。 I just fell in love with book 1 too hard。So let me quickly go over the few little things that bothered me— not much, really— before talking of every other positive aspects。 First, ju GOD。 This was really good。 The series as a whole was amazing。But the first book put the bar so HIGH, it definitely raised my expectations for the rest of the series。 Book 2 didn’t really live up to it, and this final volume was better BUT… Not as good as Daughter of No Worlds, in my opinion。 I’m being picky, though。 I just fell in love with book 1 too hard。So let me quickly go over the few little things that bothered me— not much, really— before talking of every other positive aspects。 First, just like with Children of Fallen Gods, I struggled to get through the first half。 I did like the angst, but DAMN it took a while for it to get resolved and I grew a bit frustrated at some point。I’m also sorry to say I didn’t really connect with the relationship between Aefe and Caduan。 Don’t get me wrong: Aefe’s character arc was GREAT。 Raw。 And I really liked the two of them together at first, in the second book— but the turn it took by the end and what went down in this last volume as well…I just couldn’t stand Caduan anymore。 I can’t bring myself to feel for him。 His hypocrisy was extremely irritating。Fortunately, though, the very end reminded me of why I had liked Aefe in the first place and I was very satisfied with the outcome where the two of them were concerned。Finally, I would have liked to get a little more explanations regarding Aefe’s source of power。 Where did she get all this deeper magic from? Was it there from the very beginning, because of her blood and her being an Essanere? Or did she become so powerful only because of everything she had to endure over 500 years? So, that was for the ‘frustrating’ part。Now that all of this has been said! The second half of the book was WOW。Tisaanah and Max were just as amazing as ever。 Tisaanah is so strong and down to earth, she remains one of my new favorite fantasy characters ever。 Max was particularly raw at the beginning of the book and I grew to love him even more。Their relationship was even more beautiful than before— I absolutely adored seeing them rediscovering each other at the beginning (at least, where Max was concerned), with many echoes to book 1 that made my chest tighten。 Their dynamic, their complicity, their love… Throughout the whole series, their moments and interactions were definitely my favorite parts。 They just make me swoon and are so precious to me。 The very end warmed my heart beyond words。I really loved seeing Tisaanah and Sammerin bonding even more in Max’s absence。 Sammerin typically embodies the side character I like。 Brayan being into the picture was a nice addition as well and I immediately liked his character and his messy dynamic with Max。Basically, if I struggled a bit through the first half, I found again in the second half everything I had loved about book 1: an eventful story, converging plotlines, raw and challenged characters, high stakes and not a minute to pause and think properly。 When I think of it, I have to admit I find this ending completely satisfying in terms or characters’ arcs。 I wouldn’t change a thing。So despite the rather dry and lengthy beginning, I settle for a solid 4。25 stars for this last volume。I’m gonna miss this world and its characters! Congrats to Carissa for creating such a compelling universe! ”She was just… lost。 A poor, lost heart like I had once been, ripped from world after world, belonging to nothing and everything, desperate for connection。” “All this time, I felt that death circled me like a lost lover。 I had longed for it, loved it, lusted after it。 Now my lover had become death, and all I craved was life。” “Your story deserves a better end。”“Nothing ever truly ends。” 。。。more

I don’t really have a lot of words for this book。 Only that it is one of the best endings to a series I have ever read。 Tisaanah and Max, and even Aefe have my heart。 I will never see a butterfly the same way again。

One of the best series finishers I have read for any book! All I can say is WOOOOW!! I read between working and was in tears。 I have only cried twice reading a book。 It’s been two weeks and I still am thinking constantly about Afe, Caduan, Max, and Tissannha。 The writing is once again wonderful。 The twists and turns, broken pieces and glued back together, make this book a wild ride。 I have been recommending this series to absolutely everyone I talk to。

Beautiful series!!!These three books were such a delight to read。 The author did an excellent job at world building and involving you in the characters lives that it almost feels like an injustice to them to speak of them as just the characters of the story。 I am really sad to set this last book down but I do look forward to checking out any other books she puts out。

Savannah Cotter

shocked by how good this series was!! multiple POV fantasy with interesting politics/magic & romance that doesn’t take over the whole plot。 I weirdly love the memory-loss trope in the beginning of this final book。 Wrapped up the story beautifully!

This trilogy has everything one could want and has most assuredly solidified Carissa Broadbent as one of my favorite fantasy authors and also as one of the best Indie/NA writers out there, no argument! This series features unique magic, sweet romance, twisted, ever-evolving politics, and morally-gray characters that are so utterly human。 Truly, throughout this series, I have laughed, cried, swooned, and anticipated each epic battle alongside the characters。 As I’ve said in my other reviews, Broadbent’s biggest strength is character development and I know these characters are going to stick with me for a very long time。 I hope we get to see them again in little short stories or spin-offs! Additionally, Aefe has been my favorite character since her introduction in CoFG, and I really related to her struggles of containing emotion and how she attempts to manage her grief and hatred for the wrongs the world has brought to her and her people。 It was so worth the read to see how her story ends。 My favorite quote for this broken and lost character: “You feel everything。 That is the bravest act in this world。 To feel。 I am often too afraid to do it myself。”😭 Broadbent also does a great job of giving us an epic, action-filled conclusion full of hard decisions and I loved every second of it。 Even though some of it was painful and left me with tears in my eyes, it was still a fitting and perfect end。 I’m also going to again mention some of the best tropes and themes this trilogy features。 It often gets summed up as a fantasy romance and while those elements are there of course, it’s also a heavy series with mature elements and a lot of thought provoking content that leaves room for discussion。 The true themes of the series are loss, healing, grief, and redemption。 The costs of hatred and vengeance are also explored as well as other, difficult topics like slavery, conquest, and greed。 It’s ultimately a story about the hearts of people, how these things impact them and the cycles that will continue to repeat if we give into selfish desires for war or power。 However, it is not just a heavy and depressing series, I promise! It also discusses healing and forgiveness as well as finding the worth in yourself and the others around you。 Really, I could go on and on about this series, but people don’t need to be reading my review for that。 You need to go and read the books for yourself! The War of Lost Hearts trilogy is fantastic and well worth it, so do yourself a favor and get to it!🦋🐍⚔️ ***Series content warnings***: mentions of rape, slavery, mentions of suicide, alcoholism, graphic scenes of torture, graphic violence, murder and mentions of harm to children。 Not a full or complete list, but just a heads up for anyone who may need it。 I believe the author handles each topic with respect and none of them are used for shock value, but to further highlight the cruelties and results of human greed and selfishness as well as immerse readers into this world that is often very dark。♥️ 。。。more

I enjoyed the conclusion to the series。 In general I really liked the story and the character, but not the romance。 The relationships were just too much and too overly dramatic about every look and touch。 Apart from that, it was a pretty enjoyable read。

I want to start with saying, I do think it is a 5 stars book, no matter what, and Tisaanah and Max owns my heart。 Their journey and healing is such a precious story, and one we don’t see as often these days, which is really a shame。 But this being said, I wanted to set Aefe on fire through the whole book。 I was struggling with my feelings about this book because of the Fey plot。 It was something I had to grit my teeth to get through, and I think it is the weaker side of this journey。 Most of the I want to start with saying, I do think it is a 5 stars book, no matter what, and Tisaanah and Max owns my heart。 Their journey and healing is such a precious story, and one we don’t see as often these days, which is really a shame。 But this being said, I wanted to set Aefe on fire through the whole book。 I was struggling with my feelings about this book because of the Fey plot。 It was something I had to grit my teeth to get through, and I think it is the weaker side of this journey。 Most of the questions I have unanswered are connected to this plot, next to it being infuriating。 I did like Aefe better as Reshaye than herself。 As Reshaye, she was serving the mad vengeful goddess in venom style so well, but everything she learned went to trash when Caduan brought her back and brainwashed her。On the other hand, I just love the whole arc of Tisaanah and Max’s relationship。 The things they go through and the choices they make for one another are both heartbreaking and healing your soul。 I lost it a few times through this book, but it hit the hardest when he realized the little girl he saw wasn’t Kira but his own daughter。 That bit hurt。 A LOT。I think this series is different in many ways from what seems to be the trend these days and I’m so glad for it。 It definitely has a special place in my heart and I know I will come back again and again for their love。 。。。more

The vengeance is for you。” I hope they find happiness in the next life somehow。 A streak of silver rolled down his cheek。 “I cannot save you, Aefe。” And that, I realized, was the cruelest truth of all。 He could not save me。 I could not save him。 Even though some of the characters (cough Nura cough) were truly horrible and despicable, I found it very hard to hate them。 They’re so fleshed out and human that you really understand their perspectives even if you absolutely don’t agree with them。 There’s nothing cartoonish or two-dimensional about Broadbent’s characters even if sometimes I wish they were so I could hate them more。Overall, this trilogy was fantastic and super underrated。 I’ll be taking a long break from fantasy because what can possibly live up to this? Nothing。 A realization came to me, one that I had been grappling with for the last ten years。 There was no single moment when everything changed。 No single before and after。 There was just… life。 A million decisions and a million consequences。 I hope we can all be as brave and compassionate as Tisannah。 What a legend。 Sometimes, though, I’m overwhelmed by all the work that is still left to do。 Slavery may not exist in Threll anymore, but it still exists in countless other countries。 And even where there isn’t slavery, there is poverty, abuse, subjugation。 With every new country I visit, I find it hiding in more places。 I find more children in tiny rooms。 I find more lost hearts。I see myself in every one of those children。 I look at my wonderful life and I wish I could reach through time and space to that little girl, who dreamed of a life just like this one。 But instead, I reach across mountains, I reach across deserts and seas and plains, I reach across the entire world to all those other children sitting in little rooms just like that one, and I whisper, “Look。 Look at all you can have。”Is it enough? Never。But maybe it is something, to change a world one life at a time。 It is something。 。。。more
