Summary

In Jonathan Van Ness’ New York Times bestselling memoir Over the Top, he showed readers how the incredibly difficult moments from his life (surviving sexual abuse and addiction, being diagnosed with HIV) have existed alongside great joy and positivity (landing a breakout role on Netflix’s Queer Eye, becoming an amateur figure skater and professional standup comedian, doting on his cats)。 If Jonathan has learned anything from these experiences, it’s that in order to thrive, he had to push past the shame and fear of being his true self。 To embark on that journey, he had to get comfortable with being uncomfortable。

In this candid and curious essay collection, Jonathan takes a thoughtful, in-depth look at timely topics through the lens of his own personal experience—instances that have required him to learn, grow, and back handspring layout to a better understanding of the world around him。 He dives deeply and widely—from a poignant reflection on grief and embracing body neutrality to an examination of the HIV safety net and white privilege—to share the ways in which he has learned to embrace change。 These stories speak to doing the work to challenge internalized beliefs, finding compassion and confidence, and learning more about what makes us all so messy and gorgeous。

Balancing the dark and the light, the serious and the signature humor that is Jonathan Van Ness, these essays will encourage readers to examine their individual assumptions and expand their horizons。 Ultimately, it is about giving ourselves the permission to be the flawed and fabulous humans we are, and loving our stories。

I loved this so much, read it in two sittings。Over the Top was great, but Love that Story had so many good observations and important discussions。Also a lot of valid points, good lessons, and sourced information in case you have slightly …ignorant people in your life, this might be a good book to get them。There were also some great affirmations and discussion points that I really needed to hear right now (including one quote I’ll remember for my thesis)。

I love JVN and I will never read any of his books on paper when he reads the audio himself。 He always makes me laugh out loud because the way he phrases things is just so。。。 might I say。。。 over the top! If I could pick someone whose life is a complete 180 of mine, it would be sweet Jonathan。 We have pretty much nothing in common, but that's why I liked Over the Top so much! I prefer his personal stories, but audio is still the way to go。 。。。more

Popsugar 2022: a book about gender identity JVN is hilarious and deserves an award for putting his heart and SOUL into the audio performances of his books。 If you have never thought audiobooks were for you, PLEASE listen to this and tell me it doesn't bring a collection of essays to life in a way that reading with your eyeballs never could。 I listened to Over the Top in 2020 on a whim for a Popsugar prompt and it was so hilarious and heartfelt that I binged the audiobook in a single day while Popsugar 2022: a book about gender identity JVN is hilarious and deserves an award for putting his heart and SOUL into the audio performances of his books。 If you have never thought audiobooks were for you, PLEASE listen to this and tell me it doesn't bring a collection of essays to life in a way that reading with your eyeballs never could。 I listened to Over the Top in 2020 on a whim for a Popsugar prompt and it was so hilarious and heartfelt that I binged the audiobook in a single day while working。 I vividly remember sitting at my kitchen table on my laptop (before we bought our large dining table, before I had my own desk at home, before I even had a monitor at home) and cackling at JVN telling the story of a hair disaster he had to deal with during his time as a stylist。 I knew zero things about this man prior to reading that but had the best time。 Love That Story was another fun read, though not quite the same feel as Over the Top While OTT was a straight memoir full of vulnerability and personal stories, LTS is a collection of essays that include some personal stories - including reflections on life after revealing his deepest secrets in OTT which were fascinating - and a lot of thoughts about American culture, social justice, and the needs of minorities and LGTBQ+ people。 JVN did a lot of research into history as well, and that was an interesting change from his memoir。 In one essay, he shares about the queer history of his hometown, which he only learned in writing this book。 He sheds light on people who devoted their lives to providing safe spaces for persecuted people, and did a good job of incorporating his personal experiences with the historical experiences of the people who came before him。 My favorite chapter of this book was the one when he talked about being a stylist。 Once again, his hair stories just crack me up! But I have to admit that after the first third of the book, the rest was not quite as funny, or as consistently funny, but I think that's mainly just due to the change in format from straight memoir to history/thinkpiece。 I don't agree with everything JVN argues for, and our beliefs are polar opposites, but I appreciate JVN using his platform to advocate for equal rights for minorities and education on issues across the board。 Overall, I didn't love this as much as Over the Top , but I respect it and JVN surprised me with some uproariously funny moments in his performance。 (view spoiler)[ RIP Bug and Bug II。 I've never been more devastated。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

A thoughtful exploration of identity, trauma, belonging, and a dozen other topics in 10ish essays。 JVN is a masterclass in balancing humor and heartbreak; I could often go from laughing out loud to crying in the same paragraph。 The subtitle is the core of these essays — they are "observations" from JVN's life。 Over The Top was extremely personal and more classically a memoir; while these essays are still personal, they were more often topics they are passionate about and wished to discuss。 JVN i A thoughtful exploration of identity, trauma, belonging, and a dozen other topics in 10ish essays。 JVN is a masterclass in balancing humor and heartbreak; I could often go from laughing out loud to crying in the same paragraph。 The subtitle is the core of these essays — they are "observations" from JVN's life。 Over The Top was extremely personal and more classically a memoir; while these essays are still personal, they were more often topics they are passionate about and wished to discuss。 JVN is candid about the weight and obligation they feel about using their platform and privilege, so I'm not going to begrudge the darling from getting fired up about body neutrality or the queer history of their hometown。 I will say: if I saw this physical book in someone's hands I would tear it away because BABY GIRL don't you know JVN reads the audiobook?? More narrators should absolutely SCREAM during their audiobook reading thanks for accepting my lukewarm take。3。5 stars, rounded up purely due to US Women's Gymnastics-rated tangentsThanks to HarperCollins for an audio ARC!PopSugar 2022: a book about gender identity 。。。more
