Summary

#1 New York Times Bestseller

Over 1 million copies sold

In this generation-defining self-help guide, a superstar blogger cuts through the crap to show us how to stop trying to be "positive" all the time so that we can truly become better, happier people。

For decades, we’ve been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life。 "F**k positivity," Mark Manson says。 "Let’s be honest, shit is f**ked and we have to live with it。" In his wildly popular Internet blog, Mason doesn’t sugarcoat or equivocate。 He tells it like it is—a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today。 The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k is his antidote to the coddling, let’s-all-feel-good mindset that has infected American society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up。

Manson makes the argument, backed both by academic research and well-timed poop jokes, that improving our lives hinges not on our ability to turn lemons into lemonade, but on learning to stomach lemons better。 Human beings are flawed and limited—"not everybody can be extraordinary, there are winners and losers in society, and some of it is not fair or your fault。" Manson advises us to get to know our limitations and accept them。 Once we embrace our fears, faults, and uncertainties, once we stop running and avoiding and start confronting painful truths, we can begin to find the courage, perseverance, honesty, responsibility, curiosity, and forgiveness we seek。

There are only so many things we can give a f**k about so we need to figure out which ones really matter, Manson makes clear。 While money is nice, caring about what you do with your life is better, because true wealth is about experience。 A much-needed grab-you-by-the-shoulders-and-look-you-in-the-eye moment of real-talk, filled with entertaining stories and profane, ruthless humor, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k is a refreshing slap for a generation to help them lead contented, grounded lives。

Audiobooks r hard but this one being just essays and musings made it easy to pick up and keep listening。 Feels painfully anecdotal from someone with a limited world view but ig the concepts r probably valid

I don't know why this book is getting recommended or by who, but, it is not by me or for me。 Manson (poorly) repackages the philosophies of Buddhism and Stoicism through the lens of misogyny and white mediocrity and acts like it's groundbreaking。Whether you're looking for self-improvement or general philosophical insights, there are far better options than this。 I don't know why this book is getting recommended or by who, but, it is not by me or for me。 Manson (poorly) repackages the philosophies of Buddhism and Stoicism through the lens of misogyny and white mediocrity and acts like it's groundbreaking。Whether you're looking for self-improvement or general philosophical insights, there are far better options than this。 。。。more

What kind of motivational self help book is this?Numerous occasions where Manson loves to talk about how in his glory days he was basically a f*uck boy。 Somehow travelling the globe plus having multiple sexual encounters transforms you from a egotistical hypercritical male to Buddha - one who knows all。 Groundbreaking。I’ll save your sanity from reading the book, bullet point summary of the book: Be you, build your values and stick to them, be open to new experiences/ opinions, don’t act like you know everything - avoid being narcissistic, oh and we are all going to die so do something with your life that’s influencing for future generations *insert Becker quote here*。 Don’t get me wrong, there were a few “Oh that’s so true” or “LOL” moments where I could relate to the content。 But a lot of the one liners and mic drops, I responded “。。 Well duh”。Honestly not a fan of the book, the only reason why I gave 2 stars was because some of the content was entertaining。 Other than this, this wouldn’t be my go to for self help novels。 Additionally occasionally I got the impression Manson does not give a f*uck about women, gives indication of objectification。 Gross。 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻 。。。more

A great introductory piece on acceptance and values

DNF。 I listened to this via audio book and I couldn’t focus。 Usually I like self help(ish) books but this wasn’t it。 Someone had said to me that this book was as if a drunk man at a bar came up and tried to mansplan life to you。 This is that book。 I couldn’t do it。 Meh。

I'm not normally into "self help" books, but all in all I thought this book was good。 Full of good examples, and some overall good ways to view life。 Peel back the awareness onion and focus on your values and being responsible。 I'm not normally into "self help" books, but all in all I thought this book was good。 Full of good examples, and some overall good ways to view life。 Peel back the awareness onion and focus on your values and being responsible。 。。。more

Not only did I learn a lot, it was also really enjoyable to read。 The things are explaint out of the writers experience in life (and some famous people) that way I could easy understand what it was supposed to mean。 Definitely recommend!

Jesus Christ! Reading the reviews really scares the shit out of me in which direction we're going as a society。 I think the book is absolutely brilliant and when I saw that reviews are bellow 4 stars I was really curious to see what bothered people about the content of this book。 I really would have been fine if low ratings would have been bout execution, as in people not being fine with using word fuck, or playful writing style。 But it seems that way too many people find sexism or some other so Jesus Christ! Solid advice in learning how to prioritize what you care about in life, and learning to let go what you don't need to care about。 But, like most self-help books, it could have been a longread article。 If you can get your hands on the short form version, or watch someone's summary, you'll have gotten the gist of his point。 Solid advice in learning how to prioritize what you care about in life, and learning to let go what you don't need to care about。 But, like most self-help books, it could have been a longread article。 If you can get your hands on the short form version, or watch someone's summary, you'll have gotten the gist of his point。 。。。more

The best part of this book is the title。 The rest is self-help while ragging on self-help as a genre which ends up being incredibly pompous。 There are some good points made, but on the whole I wouldn’t recommend this read。

。。。more

The sad thing with TSAoNGaF is that it could easily feel like a self-indulgent book, written only because the author needed his thoughts and anecdotes to be heard and his friends weren't audience enough。 But, aren't all books exactly that? The good thing is that for realists (or pesimists, if you like) like me this is the book to put all those "carpe diem" and "yolo" phrases down to earth。 TSAoNGaF is not about giving zero f*cks (like its title could make you believe) and live like there's nothin The sad thing with TSAoNGaF is that it could easily feel like a self-indulgent book, written only because the author needed his thoughts and anecdotes to be heard and his friends weren't audience enough。 But, aren't all books exactly that? The good thing is that for realists (or pesimists, if you like) like me this is the book to put all those "carpe diem" and "yolo" phrases down to earth。 TSAoNGaF is not about giving zero f*cks (like its title could make you believe) and live like there's nothing to lose。 On the contrary, it's about noticing what f*cks are worth giving and living through them。Worth the reading (or the listening, as it was my case) even just to have another point of view on life。 。。。more

I couldn't stop reading it but only because I wanted to get it over with as quickly as possible。 It's the kind of privileged, coked-out rhetoric you'd hear from someone who did one study abroad in Thailand only to return with a deeper sense of entitlement and co-opted Buddhist ideologies。 One star for the accomplishment of writing a book。 I couldn't stop reading it but only because I wanted to get it over with as quickly as possible。 It's the kind of privileged, coked-out rhetoric you'd hear from someone who did one study abroad in Thailand only to return with a deeper sense of entitlement and co-opted Buddhist ideologies。 One star for the accomplishment of writing a book。 。。。more

3。5I thought this was a book with a lot of good messages, but like a lot of self-help books, it didn't need to be this long and you could probably get a lot out of just reading a summary。 If you tire of traditional self-help books, this could be a good change of pace。This book isn't just about not giving a fuck, it's about choosing what to give a fuck about。 If we give a fuck about everything, then what do we really give a fuck about? We need to only give a fuck about things that are important。 I also learned that it's important to embrace negative emotions and experiences because they give meaning to positive emotions and experiences。 Also, it's important to remember that we're not that special。 We shouldn't feel entitled to things we don't struggle or suffer to attain。 Lastly, it's important to be able to say and hear "no。" Like the first lesson, we have to reject and accept things to prioritize what we really care about。 None of these are ideas are groundbreaking, but it was still very helpful to hear them。 。。。more

This book has a good and realistic approach to improvement。 I can't stand the amount of toxic positivity in a lot of these self help books。 This book isn't afraid to acknowledge that sometimes things are just shitty and it helps you actually deal with it instead of "Good vibes only"ing problems away。 It also isn't spiritual or anything, which I definitely prefer。 I This book has a good and realistic approach to improvement。 I can't stand the amount of toxic positivity in a lot of these self help books。 This book isn't afraid to acknowledge that sometimes things are just shitty and it helps you actually deal with it instead of "Good vibes only"ing problems away。 It also isn't spiritual or anything, which I definitely prefer。 I 。。。more
