This one was just not for me。 Definitely written for a younger generation with lingo that is dated to this decade and the issues with drugs/cheating meant for a younger audience。 That doesn’t always deter me; I enjoy young adult fiction and can find myself immersed in the storyline and characters even if I don’t relate to them。 This one I was unable to do so with, but I’m sure others will enjoy。 2。5 stars。 Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest revie This one was just not for me。 Definitely written for a younger generation with lingo that is dated to this decade and the issues with drugs/cheating meant for a younger audience。 That doesn’t always deter me; I enjoy young adult fiction and can find myself immersed in the storyline and characters even if I don’t relate to them。 This one I was unable to do so with, but I’m sure others will enjoy。 2。5 stars。 Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review。 。。。more

2。5 I predicted what was going to happen。 The ending was abrupt and wrapped up too nicely。

I am having mixed feelings about this book。 On one hand I liked it, on the other hand I was wondering what next crazy thing was going to happen? This book went from having nothing happen to having murder, then more murder, then drugs, more drugs。 Throughout the entire book, Lia's thought process was incredibly stupid (in my opinion)。 She's like OMG what will I do, and I'm just thinking you did it to yourself and need to think things through! I loved Dial A for Aunties, but this one was lacking all of that whodunit sparkle。 This felt like I walked in on the middle of a movie, figured out the bad guy, and watched the ending just to make sure I was right。

I know this is a YA book but it was a bit of a mess。 Lia is a new girl at the school (track star) and she falls into huge messes and manages to do everything wrong to get out if it。This is a fast paced book but a cluster。It was interesting to get perspective of Indo-Chinese culture。。。but I thought it odd that Lia NEVER called her mom。 I hated the bullying via app。。。just seemed ridiculous as well as the parties in Vegas, jets, yachts。 I will stick with the adult books from this author。

Anna

you know that one girl in horror movies that always makes the absolute worst decisions? yeah that’s Lia。

Jesse Q。 Sutanto is really clinging to the accidental murder trope with her LIFE。 😭I really wanted to like this but I can't excuse the author's tendency to write books that are all super similar ALL THE TIME。 why tho? The characters weren't exactly likable and the twists and turns left a lot to be desired。 I'm waffling on whether this book should have been scrapped altogether or just gone through some HEAVY revisions。 I think it could have been good, it just wasn't really。 Jesse Q。 Sutanto is really clinging to the accidental murder trope with her LIFE。 😭I really wanted to like this but I can't excuse the author's tendency to write books that are all super similar ALL THE TIME。 why tho? Slow at the beginning, but the second half was fast paced。 pretty predictable for me。 I honestly wasn’t a fan of the main character。I enjoyed her book before this, The Obsession soooo much more。

With The New Girl, it might've been a case of mismatched expectations。 Given the tone of the blurb, I thought that I was in for more a dark academia kind of book when instead it was more of a slapstick murder mystery - in the sense that our main character, Lia, seems to constantly end up at the wrong place and time, without much conniving of her own。The story begins promisingly enough, as Lia is introduced to Draycott Academy, a boarding school that she only gets in because of her track scholars With The New Girl, it might've been a case of mismatched expectations。 Given the tone of the blurb, I thought that I was in for more a dark academia kind of book when instead it was more of a slapstick murder mystery - in the sense that our main character, Lia, seems to constantly end up at the wrong place and time, without much conniving of her own。The story begins promisingly enough, as Lia is introduced to Draycott Academy, a boarding school that she only gets in because of her track scholarship。 On the first day, she witnesses a student being thrown out and in tears, while the rest of the student body watches and mocks her and while a cruel teacher dismisses her hysterics。 Lia only becomes more shocked when she realises the wealth and privilege that the students hail from and that the same teacher seems to have it out for her。 He asks that she drop his class and when she refuses, he unfairly gives her grades that are terrible enough to kick her off the track team。At the same time, she falls into ~insta love~ with Danny, the school's golden boy who comes from the same cultural background as her and who seems to get her in a way that she didn't expect。 However, his uncle also turns out to the same terrible teacher that's intent on terrorising Lia。The New Girl focuses a lot on bullying, as Lia is ostracised by the other students for coming from a less privileged background and because Draycott Dirt, the school's gossip app is basically a cesspool of bad behavior as the students anonymously post dirt about each other。 This could've made for an exciting read but I just found myself mostly confused by Lia's actions。 (view spoiler)[ When her teacher dies, Lia's first instinct was to tell Danny。。。the same Danny who adores his uncle。 Moreover, she jumps from idea to idea on who to frame such as the school's drug dealer, which turns out to be her friend Beth, or her bully Mandy。 However, none of these plans are very well thought out。And to top it off, it turns out that Danny, her boyfriend, isn't the golden boy that Lia thinks he is。 Because he was the one who murdered the expelled girl, Sophie, and also nearly kills Stacey, Lia's hacker friend, because he believed that the latter was his uncle's killer。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

I really liked this book。 I think the story flowed perfectly and it was easy to follow along with。 The ending was not what I was expecting。 I was confused about one part of the book about the death of a student。 In the first book The Obsession they died one way but in this book the death was described differently。 Granted I could have miss read it and didn't understand it。 Overall I think this was a good read and I would definitely recommend it to other people。 I am definitely adding her other b I really liked this book。 I think the story flowed perfectly and it was easy to follow along with。 The ending was not what I was expecting。 I was confused about one part of the book about the death of a student。 In the first book The Obsession they died one way but in this book the death was described differently。 Granted I could have miss read it and didn't understand it。 Overall I think this was a good read and I would definitely recommend it to other people。 I am definitely adding her other books to my TBR。 。。。more

I loved the author's previous book The Obsession, with its super messed up characters and plot, where everyone is a criminal but you still have to pick a side and you root for the bad guy anyway (totally recommend The Obsession if you like very morally gray/black characters and shocks)。 I was super excited to jump into this story with a new set of characters but set at the same shady boarding school, but unfortunately this did not live up to my (possibly too high) expectations。 The plot for the I loved the author's previous book The Obsession, with its super messed up characters and plot, where everyone is a criminal but you still have to pick a side and you root for the bad guy anyway (totally recommend The Obsession if you like very morally gray/black characters and shocks)。 I was super excited to jump into this story with a new set of characters but set at the same shady boarding school, but unfortunately this did not live up to my (possibly too high) expectations。 The plot for the New Girl was not nearly as engaging for me and had a very slow start。 The first third felt a little slow, basically poor new girl comes to a new school and is basically bullied for her race and scholarship status and all the wealthy kids are druggies。 And then next thing you know, BAM, an out of nowhere incredibly disturbing scene occurs to change the plot directions。 And then the story basically spirals out of control from there but not in a great way, more like the main character is incredibly paranoid and stuck in her own PTSD-ish head and some very obvious yet supposed to be surprising stuff occurs around her and then the end。 I knew who was responsible for a lot of stuff at least half way through, I was not surprised by anything that happened and I felt that even the end wrapped up in a tidy little bow that just felt like a limp noodle。All that being said, I would read a third book set at this school because there is always the potential for more and this is a very shady school as previously mentioned。 I know nothing about boarding schools in real life, but if this is how they really are, yikes and maybe homeschool is the safe option。 。。。more

This was so ridiculous and unrealistic。 I kind of enjoyed the read when I suspended my disbelief but the characters were poorly written, the logic was nonexistent, and it was all so over the top, so I can't in my right mind give it a higher rating than this。 It feels very amateur, more like a teen's first foray into writing an overexcitable boarding school mystery with little regard for how things actually work。 The whole thing felt painfully underresearched and I found the protagonist to be qui This was so ridiculous and unrealistic。 I kind of enjoyed the read when I suspended my disbelief but the characters were poorly written, the logic was nonexistent, and it was all so over the top, so I can't in my right mind give it a higher rating than this。 It feels very amateur, more like a teen's first foray into writing an overexcitable boarding school mystery with little regard for how things actually work。 The whole thing felt painfully underresearched and I found the protagonist to be quite infuriating。 。。。more

Writing was not the best, it was written in a very gen Z way。 But therefore a very easy and quick read。 Fast-paced story but sometimes a bit too urealistic。 I also expected it be be a bit more twisted / scary。 Overall enjoyed the hell out of this book。 Can’t wait to read more by Jesse。

I was anticipating because it's a prequel to The Obsession。 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙉𝙚𝙬 𝙂𝙞𝙧𝙡 was set in Draycott Academy where Lia Setiawan will start her first day as a track scholarship student。 Stuck in between adapting to the new environment and meeting a teacher who is eager to fail her in English literature, Draycott isn't as shiny and beautiful as the brochures say when Lia gets caught in between incidents of a dead student found in a teacher's room and a missing teacher who is found dead in the wood。Love th I was anticipating because it's a prequel to The Obsession。 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙉𝙚𝙬 𝙂𝙞𝙧𝙡 was set in Draycott Academy where Lia Setiawan will start her first day as a track scholarship student。 Stuck in between adapting to the new environment and meeting a teacher who is eager to fail her in English literature, Draycott isn't as shiny and beautiful as the brochures say when Lia gets caught in between incidents of a dead student found in a teacher's room and a missing teacher who is found dead in the wood。Love the themes as it highlighted a teen trope in dark academia backdrop-- conflicts on friendship, school politics (what's up with the principal?), bullying, racism, drugs abuse and battle in between one's self esteem and parent's expectations (too much of asian moms ref but not much depth given to the issue though)。 Fast-paced, nerve-racking and too hectic as it used the 1st person view that I get a very descriptive all over the place thoughts of Lia-- she was too dramatic for me and her personality was hard to grasp sometimes。 The intertwining mystery was compelling (that two murder cases, drugs dealing and overdose) but I don't fancy much on the development as the execution feels so rushed and bit 'jumpy' especially in the middle to the last few chapters as it goes too propulsive and abruptly change scenes in between。 Although I only get a bit of Sophie and Logan interactions in here (the main arc to The Obsession plot) which kind of disappointing (I was hoping more, or at least a way back before the incident happened), I still find the mystery and way it connected to Lia as addictive enough。 I like Stacey and Beth, and Danny-- I know I shouldn't trust you that much (that slide in Bahasa Indonesia into your conversation was kind of cute anyhoo), and the other characters-- they were truly giving me headache with those entitlement and being too spoiled。 Still a twisty and chilling narrative despite being predictable with the ending, love the suspense anyway, 3。5 stars to this!Thank you Times Reads for the gifted ARC! 。。。more
